"College Perk Coffee House" College Park, MD (Independent Coffee House) [04 Apr 2007|10:34am]

happiestpanda
There are three types of positions, Bartender/Barrista (yea fully stocked bar), cook and wait-staff.
There are three shifts: Mornings, Day, Evening. (graveyard---the place is 24 on Fri-Saturday women are not given the option to work this shift---there's only one person on at that time and the owner worries about their safety) might sound sexist, I've had long conversations with the owner about it---and it's part of their policy.

Go in and fill an application---wait for a call back.

Starting pay $7/hr (or maybe it's $7.50) and tips which are split. I think most people walk with $35-40 on a normal day. Event nights are generally much higher, as are evening shifts.

There isn't a 'dresscode', but sometimes they'll ask you to wear a Perk T-shirt...one of their past GM had piercings all over her face (lip, septum...etc), hair colors changing: blood-red, blue...blonde w/dreads---the current GM has short black hair with blue streaks and the otherday I saw her in multi-coloured stockings and rollerskates serving Mohitos...non-offensive visible tattoos---ok.

There are about 15 residents living on the grounds...
Some of the patrons can be real assclowns. It is located in a 'college town.'
If you do your job and you do it well---it's more important than anything else.

It's a fun but sometimes stressful place to work, I loved it---just doesn't pay as much as admin work does.

*puts jumper cables on community* [09 Mar 2007|06:49pm]

_antipathy_
This community has been dead for nearly two years. My apologies. (How time flies.)

I would like to make a friendly request that everyone please make a quick post if (1) you are currently working for a company or in a field that is accepting of some "alternative" aspect of your lifestyle (i.e. green hair, mohawk, lesbian, transitioning), or (2) you are aware of some place which is friendly to this. Of course, you can also post if you're looking for work. Hopefully, someone can help you.

Just a reminder to please including the following:
1. Subject line: Include useful info so it can be easily seen when looking back in the archives. For example, "Independent bookstore in Fort Lauderdale, FL" or "Restaurant in Manchester, England".
2. Pertinent info: e.g. "XYZ company in New York City hires anyone for their customer service and shipping departments. They typically pay $9/hour with benefits for full time. Contact number: 212.555.1234."

I will start this out by making a post shortly.

Thanks :)

Working at Sephora [11 Jul 2005|12:55pm]

phantombreeze
Hello. I was wondering if any of you work at Sephora? because I have some questions...
How lenient are they on letting you express yourself? Like with makeup and your image... like dyed hair, piercings (not that I have any), etc... are they pretty cool with that stuff or are they more for the conservative look like most other jobs? I would think they would be cool with image and everything because it is a makeup place...
How much do you make? Does it pay well?
And seeing this is would be my first actual job if I do choose to do this (I admit I'm a bum)... what "position" would you suggest me doing? What position are you?
Do you get any cool benefits?
How is the atmosphere there? I heard at my Sephora some people (mostly younger aged people) are scared or perhaps intimidated of going in because the ladies there always bitch at them because they think they are just playing with makeup or something... and I always feel weird going in sometimes because I just get this odd feeling that I don't really fit in or something... but it's probably just me and my paranoia problem. Because the last time I went there (which has been a while ago, I don't normally go because I don't have a lot of money) the lady that worked there was really nice to me, well she was probably just trying to sell me a lot of stuff, but she did give me lots of nice compliments when I tried on stuff.. :)
So I dunno...I've never really worked before so I don't know if this is the right job for me. But I'm rather interested in working there and rather work at a place where I'm interested in working, in then say... a Walmart (which could be another choice for me...they make $7.90 at one of them)...

So...maybe someone can give me some feedback on this? Thanks.

Anyone out there? [29 Mar 2005|10:39am]

candicide
I was so happy to find this community...but it looks a little deserted. Here goes nothing, just in case...

I just moved north of Atlanta, and was supposed to transfer with Hot Topic (I'm an assistant manager)...however, I've been waiting on that transfer for two months now, and they still haven't assigned a store for me. Being someone who isn't independantly wealthy, of course I need to find something NOW.

I can't drive all the way into downtown to work, but I am looking very hard for places that are mod-friendly and hiring in the Marietta/Woodstock/Roswell areas. If anyone has any ideas, I would be most appreciative. I gots diapers to buy.

P.S. I did see the link to The Modified Mind Employment Line, and it gave me a lot of ideas on franchised businesses that are mod-friendly, but I don't know what else is in my area, and need as many places to apply as possible.

Looking for alt friendly work in LA [12 Nov 2004|02:31pm]

maycontain
Hi everyone,

I live in LA and I currently am a cashier monkey at Target. Target does allow me to wear all my piercings but I'm pretty sure fun hair is out, they said nothing "distracting." I don't really care for my job and I got it only because I had worked for the company in 1999 and I knew I could get hired for the season (I just moved to LA and I wanted to get a job asap while I looked for a better one). So, I am on my quest for a better job, one that pays just a bit better and one that will allow me to have fun hair. Besides the obvious Hot Topic/Torrid route, does anyone have any recommendations for the LA area? I can do office (phones, computers etc), retail, some lifting, customer service, I'll try anything. The only thing I CAN NOT do is a sales position since my skills in that area are pretty much non existent. I am a hard worker, I'm always on time, I don't ever get sick (and if I do I can "walk it off"), I don't really ask for any days off and I'm willing to take a job low on the totem poll and work my way up.

Thanks in advance for any tips :)

Small business, opportunities. [02 Oct 2004|06:08pm]

chansondenuit
For the moment, we're fully staffed, but the 'pipe'/'adult novelty'/gift store I work at is definitely alt-friendly, so long as you've got good work ethics.

There's no web-site, presently, but the shop (Rockin' Cards & Gifts) is in Pinellas Park, FL--just north of Saint Petersburg; roughly a 25-minute drive west, from Tampa--if you're in the area and would care to stop by, either look up directions online or get in touch with me.

Prior workers have come through, heavily tattooed and pierced--no problems. I tend to stick with varying haircolors--bright pink/purple streaks, now. Management is youthful, and open-minded.

Anywho, I'll be leaving employment here by the first of December, as I move to Louisiana. Chances are there'll be at least part-time hours available, soon thereafter, if anyone in the area may be interested. Pay starts somewhere around $6-7, depending upon experience, if I recall correctly.

Anyone who may be interested in hearing more, feel free to contact me.

hello... [29 Jul 2004|03:28pm]

I just found this community in a friend's user info, so I thought I'd pop in. I work for a public radio network... it's a very alt-friendly place. My boss's boss has complimented me on my tattoos and purple extension braids. If you're in DC or LA, here is the job info for my employer: http://www.npr.org/about/jobs/ -- elsewhere, I highly recommend checking out your local public radio stations. They need all kinds of people, not just journalists, and they are way cool!

Hellohi all!
I just joined and I have a couple questions for anyone that has info:
I'm going to be moving to sacramento--[California]--sometime in the rather near future and I was wondering if anyone would have any info on where I may be able to get a job that would pay decently enough--[outside of Hot Topic and *reads below* Old Navy.]--I LOVE wearing fake hair; dread falls, dread extensions, loose, etc, and I have a couple tattoos, both on my arms--[L Forearm and R inner wrist]--Any info would be great! Thanks Much!

McKay's Used Bookstore is a fabulous place to work. They have two locations, one in Centreville, Virginia, and another in Manassas, Virginia. Starting pay is $7.50 and they have medical insurance options. Body modifications and hair color are not an issue, and dress is completely casual.

So I believe the Wild Oats, the health food store hires people who are alt looking. I've seen a lot of people with visible tatts, and piercings, and as well hair cuts. I sent in an application and Res so I'll be sure to inform people about it.

Here's a Few for VA/DC.. [24 May 2004|05:40pm]

rachelgothic
[ mood | thoughtful ]

At one Blockbuster Video location, I was allowed to wear black synthetic dreadlocks and wool wraps after discussing it with my store manager. Other employees had visible tattoos and piercings. But at another location, I got a bit of attention for having black and red hair. It depends on the manager and the area, but I would definantly recommend Blockbuster. There are benefits for both part-time and full-time positions.
Dream Dressers, a fetish boutique, is very alternative-friendly. But because they are independantly-owned (or atleast the store I worked at was), there are no benefits and little room for advancement.
Anyone have any recommendations for a great job in the Manassas, Virginia are?

I have bright dread extensions or plastic extensions in most of the time, draw a stich in place of one of my eyebrows (both shaved off), wear kinda loli/punk/cyberish clothes, and have succeeded with being myself at two jobs so far! hehe. I worked at a college bookstore, they are usually laxed, but its not the best job. They only payed 7 dollars, no benefits, and they get rather stressful three times a year in there (begining of semesters), and I was a supervisor.
Then I went on to work at a deli, where more or less I was hired because of my hair. :) The manager always talked to me about my hair when I would walk over there from the bookstore to buy lunch, and eventually convinced me to come work for her.

Joann Fabrics was the worst place I ever worked as far as being alt at work. I kept my hair in a plain black bob, wore plain button up white shirts, and blain black skirts, and an ugly green apron. My boss harrassed me about one of my plain black skirts saying she didnt like it and thought it was more at home wear. And the only reason I was wearing it was for work. Rar she angered me soo much. Always harrassing me, saying I was goth, and that I bought all my clothes at hot topic. And I said Huney, I have been this way LONG before that crappy store ever existed.

When I worked at the kindergarten, they were pretty relaxed, though I still wore business casual as I found that most appropriate. (When everyone else is dressed in suits, I kinda felt the need to dress at least semi nice) Although I did wear some fake dread falls to work once. The kids got a kick out of it.

Henry For museum & Greenfield village was very strict about dress code, no jewelry, no peircings, no colored hair, EXPECIALLY if you are to wear period clothing (that I can understand). And they pay barely minimum wage.

Starting tommorow however, I will be unemployed on the road to being self employed, which is the ultimate job, heheh.

A different kind of job... [03 Apr 2004|09:55am]

verdammtmadchen
For the animal lovers... I'm finding that a lot of Veterinary clinics are ok with body mods. As long as the jewelry isn't too big that an animal can get caught in it and rip it out. I'm currently working as a Veterinary Assistant with the following piercings: labret, eyebrow, two on each ear, and tongue and also a visible tattoo on my wrist. I'm also in school to be a Veterinary Technician (the equivalent of a nurse), and even in the higher position, body mods are still allowed. It can be a messy job, but if you like animals, you might want to consider it. It's very rewarding.

Ok thats it Bush is going to far .
im sure you have seen or heard by now that dubya wants a constitutional amendment to ban same sex marriage. in my opinion this violates the spirit of the constitution and decleration of independance. not to mentiona violation of civil rights,
two things that should be done now . i Implore everyone to not only get on the ball quickly and contact your congres person and senate person and let them know that goverment should not denie anyone the freedom wed . that the fedral govermenthas no right to dictate how people love each other.
also since actions speak much louder than any words,Boyct Marriage in general as long as same sex couplesare not allowed to join together in matrimony . This Should be enacted by Straight couples and bisexuals in male/female relationships

Remember the Quote " as long as even one person is oppressed none o are free"
well that fits here

so please take this to heart and take the message to every one you know . email everyone you know , post to every mesage board , journal and blog you can find ,
its badenough that this administration has has been sneaky and schemein and tried to slip laws in and chipaway at liberty , It has to stop
and beyond all else .the fall...Anyone EXCEPT Bush

.. Hi looking through this community.. i didn't see UPS mentioned..it is part time at $8.50 and hour .. and is only like 3 maybe 4 hours a shift. If you work inside the HUb, (not as a Driver or Drivers assistant).. then they don't care what you look like.. you can have colored hair visible tattoo's and piercings, You have to wear boots..which i think most of us want to anyway. And you can pretty much wear what you want, however it is a labor job.. and for girls you obviously can't wear like skirts or anything. It is hard work .. but a good work out at the same time. they are operational 24 hours a day.. and have shifts round the clock. Unfortunately i don't believe they are hiring at this moment .. but i heard they may start again in like March. It makes a good second job too. Alot of college kids work there too.

Sorry if this was already mentioned.. but i didn't see it.. so here it is again if it was posted before.. ~smiles~ Hope this can help someone down the line.
