The SSE Education & Outreach Committee is organizing a symposium on "Evolution in a Changing World" for the in-person portion of the 2027 Evolution meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico on June 25-29. 

This symposium will consist of three speakers sharing how they educate students and engage the public around this research area. The symposium will open with a short introduction, followed by ~30 minute talks from speakers, and will close with a panel discussion. We expect that each talk will primarily focus on how your research program educates & engages around this topic. 

All career stages are welcome. SSE has modest funds to help defray the costs of attending Evolution for selected speakers.

The deadline to apply to join the new Environmental Impacts and Sustainability Committee has been extended to October 15, 2026! This committee will develop guidelines and recommendations to reduce the environmental footprint of SSE activities, including conferences and Society networks, and to support sustainable research practices across the field. 

Committee terms are for three years and begin January 1.

The committee will work to balance the Society’s scientific mission with its environmental  responsibilities by addressing the impacts of travel, resource and plastic consumption, and other  Society activities. It will take a global perspective, extending beyond the in-person meeting  footprint alone. Where appropriate, the committee will integrate sustainability considerations into Society awards, rubrics, and proposal processes, while recognizing that not all research programs directly engage with sustainability issues. The committee will also promote awareness and engagement through symposia, resource sharing, and highlighting members who incorporate sustainability into their research and outreach. 

In its first year, the committee will establish its membership and formal charge and pursue one  concrete, achievable goal — such as collecting data on travel-related environmental impacts — to guide future recommendations and actions.

Applications are now open for the 2027 International Travel Stipends, which provide funds for researchers, particularly students and early-career researchers, to attend the in-person portion of the 2027 Evolution meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico on June 25-29, 2027.

Recipients receive meeting registration, dormitory accommodations, and reimbursement for travel expenses. All career stages are eligible, and preference will be given to students and early-career researchers. Only researchers in certain countries are eligible.

The deadline to apply to join the SSE Access, Inclusion, and Community (AIC) Committee has been extended to September 30th.

The SSE AIC Committee’s mission is to promote an inclusive environment to enhance the field of evolutionary biology and foster the career of its developing scientists. Learn more about the committee’s history, actions, and goals here.

In 2026, some of the committee’s actions at the annual Evolution meeting included:

• Organizing networking events for several affinity groups
• Hosting a Solidarity Event to provide support and resources in response to a shifting research landscape
• Organizing the AIC Committee Symposium on Indigenous Data Sovereignty
• Working a booth to connect with members 

The committee also works throughout the year on various initiatives relating to the committee’s goals: to build a stronger community among our membership, foster a sense of belonging at the annual Evolution Meetings, improve access to SSE awards to all members, and educate and inform evolutionary biologists of the history of the field. 

Committee terms are for three years and will begin January 1, 2027.

We are seeking someone with broad interests and enthusiasm who can help promote the success of a society-owned journal by commissioning Review and Perspective articles. Applications are now open for the International Event Grants, which provide funding for international symposia, workshops, courses, and other events within the field of evolutionary biology, including virtual events. These grants aim to support events that benefit emerging communities in the field of evolutionary biology.

Who do you know whose conceptual advances, impactful publications, outreach and education efforts, mentorship and training, service to the community, or access and inclusion work has contributed to the evolutionary biology field and community? Maybe it’s you! Consider nominating yourself or someone else for the SSE Lifetime Achievement Award. Nominators will be asked to complete a short form describing the nominee’s contributions to the field and community. A detailed nomination letter is not required for the initial nomination.
