Two days are quite something when you’re aiming for a service availability of 99% while running a server from 1996. That’s already a bit more than 0.5% of yearly availability lost. And the reason? My G.SHDSL extender. It just died. Syndrome was a flickering power LED with the rest (LAN LEDs, SHDSL LEDs) gone dark. When trying to power the box up in a different room with no surrounding noise, I could hear a buzzing sound, probably a component failure in the DC/DC voltage regulator module inside of the network extender. Also, the fan would spin only very slowly or even fail to spin up at all. Because it’s not getting enough input voltage anymore I presume. The external power supply appeared to be fine, delivering the voltage it should, but who knows. I only measured the no-load voltage after all, which isn’t all that useful for power supply diagnosis, but yeah. I’m thinking it’s more likely the extender itself.
Now, my service level agreement would entitle me to get this fixed within 24 hours, but to make that happen, I would need to be on-site for the technician to attach the new extender. That wasn’t possible, as I can’t take time off at work this fast. So instead I asked them to send it to me, which took another day. This made the downtime last from roughly 04:00 pm UTC+1 DST on 2019-10-14 to 05:45 pm UTC+1 DST on 2019-10-16, so for almost 50 hours.

Well, what can I do. That’s just how it is. Might not reach the 99% in 2019, but maybe I can cheat a bit and push the yearly full backup + cleaning back to 2020.
Also, I’ll try to obtain a replacement extender. If I can somehow configure it correctly to work with my provider’s DSLAM, I won’t have to wait for the new one anymore and can go back online in mere hours, should this happen again.
Anyway, since yesterday evening, all services are back online!

And here we go again… Wednesdays. Well, on Wednesday, 2016-05-04 my internet service provider will have to do some undefined maintenance again, and that’s supposed to be happening in between 01:00 – 06:00 am. According to my provider UPC, there will be several short periods of unavailability of service about 15 minutes long. Of course they’ll do everything as quickly and properly as possible as to not to interrupt their customers’ services too much – or so they say. So, once again:
