Just a quick update on what has been going on with us. Ehlana has finished yet another play. She was in Tom Sawyer. Tyler and Toniann went to Youth Conference last week at camp Williams. Tonya has been doing the mom thing (well I might add) and working. She is leaving the bookstore this week howerver to concentrate on being mom/taxi driver as school is about to start. We will have two high school students this year and they will be going to different high schools, due to interests (i.e. Ehlana with music and drama) and this will require a lot more help from Tonya. She is a good woman!
Everything is pretty much the same, with the exception that Tyler's brother Warren and his family moved back to Utah from Texas this week. Tyler is pretty excited about that, it will be good to have another Ute fan for him to hang out with during games.
Well, I guess that is it. We will try to be better about posting as well as adding pictures. We have a lot of them, but for some reason just don't get around to adding them. Sorry!

July 4th Weekend
We had a good 4th of July weekend. We spent a lot of time with family. Here are some shots of us up at Heber Valley Camp. This is a camp that is normally a girls camp all summer long, but due to the holiday Vaughn and Tammy were able to reserve it, so they asked us to join them. We went up Friday night and drove home that night because Lalenia and Ehlana were going to be in parades the next morning.

New farm animal
We have a new addition to our little farm (if you can even call it that). His name is Chip and he has a jaw that goes non-stop. He eats everything in his path. He is pretty big as you can see in the pictures.
Anyway, here are some shots of him after Ehlana gave him a bath. We sort of had a cleaning the animals and car family night. It was fun!

Day 17
We are home now! What an amazing and unforgetable trip.
I was asked today, what was the worst and the best part of the trip? I will answer here.
So the best thing (I think most of us in the family are in agreement) was La Push. Let me explain a little. First we all really enjoyed the time together playing games at the hotel at night, but seeing that this is something we can always do at home as well, we picked the second thing which was actually something we could only do on the trip. La Push was it. There are many reasons for this. If you look at the slide show, most of the tide pool images are from La Push. I think the biggest deal was that we were able to sit and watch a family of sea otters which were not very far away from us. We went when the tide was completly out and we were able to watch from rocks that normally would be under water. The sea otters played on some rocks and some played in the water and then there were some that were fishing for fish and clams and such. We were able to see some of them catch things and then jump up on rocks and eat what they caught. Next we were able to see LOTS of sea creatures in the tide pools including the sunflower star fish that is in the slideshow. This is not a normal thing to see in the tide pools as we learned a few days later when we went to the Oregon Coast Aquarium (Tonianns favorite). I guess it was a very rare thing and that they are normally found in deep water. We were able to watch it and touch it. I could go on for a long time about La Push.... It was our favorite thing!
What was our least favorite thing? Most of us had different ones. Tylers least favorite thing was being chased by the cow elk (see earlier posts for this one). Tonya, Ehlana and Lalenias were some of the hotels we stayed at and Tonianns was those days (2) where we had to drive for a long time (going and coming home). Overall, I think the least favorite thing is that it is over.
It felt good to get home and not have to move to different location from day to day, but it was sure a pretty part of the country to spend the time. If we had to make a recommendation, we would suggest just going someplace along the cost of Washington and just spend all the time there. That is what we would do if we did this all again.
OK, so to now answer the question (which no one figured out, or at least told us they knew), where were we on days 15 and 16. Where was the undisclosed location? It was home! We wanted a couple of days of being home (still on family vacation) and not have to let eveyone know we were back to every day life. I say we were home, but we did not actually spend a lot of time at home. We maintained the "we are on vacation" theme and went and did things in Salt Lake that we would not normally do as a family (i.e. window shopping, and art festivals). Yes it is true we don't get much time to do things like this.
Anyway, the pictures for day 15 that I though for sure Charity would get was from Virgs. The pictures from day 16 were from the chalk art festival that was going on at the Gateway over the weekend. We went there on three different occasions to see the progress, from taping areas off for each of the artists to completion of the work. It rained and some good drawings were washed out but overall some amazing work!
Well, I guess that is all for now. I personally am not looking forward to tomorrow as we all go back to every day life (work, work, and more work) ;-). Day 14

Day 13
Today we left Bend and went to Burns, OR. Not a long drive, just a couple of hours drive. We tend to make those short drives take a lot longer. Tyler knew we were driving by one of the largest obsidian fields around the Western United States, so we stopped. We did not drive too far up the dirt road near Glass Butte, but we drove far enough to know our car has little to no clearance. No problems, Tyler was very careful. Anyway, we drove up the road and he got out of the car a couple of times and wondered around near the road picking up samples. Most of his obsidian rocks came from in the road. It was all over the place. To the extent Tyler was worried about having a sharp one cut the tire, so after the third stop, we turned around. He collected enough samples to know that he wants to plan a trip with him and several others to take our truck up and do some serious collecting. I guess there are a lot of different shades and colors that come out of that area, even gold colored obsidian.
After the rock collecting, we headed into Burns, had lunch at McDonalds and then did some window shopping until we could check into the hotel. Once we were able to check in, we did so and then the kids went swimming.
Next we did what Tyler said has been his favorite activity while on our long trip. Any guesses before you read on? ........
It was playing games as a family. We played Apples to Apples for four or five hours. Tyler also said, it is interesting that we have to remember how much we enjoy each others company and playing games with each other by going out of town on a long trip where we run out of other things to do. ;-) Then he said, I guess it would be easier if we actually had time while we were home to do this. Good point!!!
Well, that is it, that is all we did today. Not a lot, but relaxing.
Tomorrow we will be at a secret place, an undisclosed location!!! It will be exciting!!!
By the way, Tyler is working on setting up a slideshow for displaying all of our pictures, it might work already as it is at the bottom of the page on this blog, but our connctions are too slow so we don't see it. If you do, let us know it works. He is done messing with trying to get them all on these post entries over slow internet connections. The slideshow can be done with a whole folder of pictures so hopefully it is easier and we can get them on or they are already on. Talk to you tomorrow!

Day 12
Ehlana is writing today's entry:
So like, today, we were like totally tired. I mean, we had to get up at like 6:00 this morning. Can you like, totally believe that? And when we went to get breakfast at like McDonalds, It was like, empty! There was like, nooooone!
Ughhhh! I don't like valley girls (I know one. seriously. I didn't think anyone really talked like that). Anyway, we really did get up early. We got breakfast and sat on our butts and drove all day! Fun! Well, sort of. I'll tell you the places we stopped. First we drove through redwood forest. Those trees are BIG! and they look big from the car, but when you get out of the car they're even bigger! we saw the place where the ewok part of Starwars was filmed, which was cool. And very green. Then we stopped at a gas station for gas......and Candy! ya. it was awesome.
After we stopped for some cheap sunglasses we headed to Crater Lake! It was even bigger then the trees! But the weird thing was that since it was a collapsed volcano, you could see the entire lake. And it was more than big. It was Humongous! Funny thing, there was snow on the mountains where Crater Lake was. But when we got out of the car, we were attaked by masquitos!!!! Then we drove to our hotel, got dinner, went swimming, did laundry, and now we're at the present time!
Once again, issues with internet, will try to post pictures in a new post.

Day 11
Well we did not do too much today. We drove into California and the Redwood Forest. We went to an area where the trees of mystery were located and hiked down to hidden beach. We stayed there for a while and played in the logs, trees and tide pools. Found some cool looking crabs and took pictures of them. We also drove in a tree. Yep, you read it right, we drove in a tree! The tree was big enough for our whole car to fit inside (side to side and front to back) and the tree was still alive!
Oh, our internet is even slower today so we will try to post pictures tomorrow. It is tough traveling like this when it comes to doing the blog. We never know what the internet access is going to be like from night to night.
Tomorrow we will be heading up to Grants Pass and then on to Crater Lake and then Bend, OR. Wish us luck!

Day 10
This post will be written by Lalenia.
So we are still at Coos Bay today and we went and spent time with Tonya's aunt and uncle. First we met up in Florence. We thought it would be fun to go to the dunes out here in Oregon. Well we went to a restaurant and had dinner with them. We didn't go to church today, instead we listened to some talks that Tonya had gotten from work which were neat also. So we did get to go to the dunes by the beach and I got really wet. I got water all the way to my waist. Tonya's uncle and I played tag for a little bit. We went to the dunes that the people would ride dunebuggies on. We were all waiting for someone to crash, but none did. We then said goodbye and we went back to our hotel.
Well that was pretty much all we did today. We had a great time though.
Wait, we also went to some tidepools. Tyler was told that he did not have to shave because he would never see any of these people again. When we were in Florence Tyler saw a hamradio friend from tooele that he would see again.

Day 9
We are writing this one Sunday morning because we didn't get it done yeserday. Shhh don't tell. We will just pretend it is Satuday night.
So, this morning we went to the famous aquarium. We saw them feed the Sea Lions, they did tricks and everything. They would lift a fin and hide their faces, all kinds of cute stuff. Toniann fed some big shell slug kind of thingy. Also we learned that the weird sun star fish (see pictures below) thing we saw is called a sunflower star fish. It starts out with five legs and then grows more until it has twenty-four. It was pretty cool. We had a lot of fun. After that we drove down to the Sea Lion caves. http://sealioncaves.com/home/ It was very cool. We are now in Coos Bay. We went to Wal-mart. How exciting is that. Tyler had to get gas. We finally have some pictures so we will put a lot of pictures on for you. Tyler just realized that there is a port in Tonya's laptop for his memory card so we could put the pictures on. Tonya should have known I guess, like she uses it all the time?

Day 8
OK, it is now day 8 and we are now in Oregon. We are in Newport Oregon. We did not do much today other then drive Highway 101 really slow (little towns with 25 and 35 mph speeds) It was tough in that we only had to go 180 miles and it took about 5 hours. We did get stuck for about 30 minutes on the road while we waited for a movie that was being filmed on the highway. Don't know what it was, but we thougt we saw a silver volvo (it was not in the end, but everyone was excited when they first saw it following behind a camera car).
Once we got to Newport and into our hotel, we went and had sea food at Mo's. Tyler and Toniann had Oyster Stew and Clam Chowder. Tyler had an Oyster Shooter, which is a raw oyster with lemon and another sauce in a shot glass. He made sure to eat it when everyone else was looking away so they would not get sick before they ate. He said it was good. In the end Tyler prefers his clam chowder and oyster stew over the world famous Mo's versions. Interesting!
Well, tomorrow we will be going to the Oregon Coast Aquarium (rated in the top 10 aquariums). Oh, by the way we also went to the Devils Punch Bowl, it is a place where there were two caves along the ocean and due to storms and such the roof of the caves caved in. Now there is a bowl that the waves rush into through two entrances.

Day 7
This post will be written by Lalenia.
Well it has been one week now and we are still having fun. So we have been to alot of neat and exciting places this week. We have still not seen any rain and this is Washington. Kind of crazy. Ehlana is always saying she brings the sun with her! Well the day started by us going to the beach by our hotel. After that we got on the road to Longbeach. Once we got there we drove around town. When we were able to check in at the hotel we saw some deer and my dad said he could take them. We brought some of our stuff into the room. Once we got back in the car we said that Edward had gotten rid of the deer. My dad then said that the reason we didn't see any bears was because Emmet had gotten rid of them. We went to Astoria. Some might know that Short Circuit,The Goonies, Kindergarten Cop and some other movies were filmed there. We went across a bridge that was four milles long, then we went shopping for supplies. We then went back to our hotel and had dinner. We then played games. Well thats all. ADIOS AMIGOS!

Day 6
This post will be written by Ehlana:
hi. today was cool. we got up. we drove to the woods. we hiked to second beach at La Push. then we drove again. now we're staying at a cool place. with a fire place. and three rooms. exciting.
Just Kidding!!! ;D It was actually really cool. We did drive to La Push, and hiked up to second beach. There we saw star fish, anemanemanemanies (some looked like bog of eternal stenches), crabs, hermit crabs (a lot of them to!), and a funky 21 legged starfish called a sun starfish (as far as we know...).
But the most exciting thing in La Push was.....Otters!!! Sea Otters to be exact. they were ssooooo cute!!! they swam as a group to some far away rocks, but one caught something and was eating it on a rock about 50 feet away from us! he was adorable! We left second beach and on the way back we saw a huge slug; and he was ugly, big (at least three inches), and yellow!
We were eating lunch at some picnic tables in the Hoh rain forest when we saw an elk standing a few yards away from the trail and it had a baby that was even closer! my dad took pictures and it was cool! the baby was cute. it sat down and the mom looked like she didn't know where it went! (keep reading and at the end I will tell you more about this)
When we got to the time share we left our bags in the room and went to the beach. there were some seagulls (chad: geese!) along the shore. Then we saw something strange on the beach; geese (chad: seagulls!(inside joke, chad will get it.)). Toniann, Lalenia, and I followed them as they wobbled on the shore. After a while I was the only one still walking with them, but they didn't mind. They would walk a little faster when I came to close, but other than that I was able to stay a few feet away without them careing. then we came back and went to bed. exciting.
extras on the elk: my dad walk far from where the elk was to take pics of the marsh (staying a lot farther away from the elk then we were) when she suddenly started chaseing him! he was about three times as far from the elk as we were so we couldn't figure out why she was chaseing him. He walked towards the car again, using a passing car as a sheild so she stopped for a while, but started again. by the time he got to the car she wasn't chaseing him anymore, she had turned to chaseing passing cars instead. I guess something spooked her.

Day 5
This post will be written by Toniann. We started this morning at the beach in Port Angeles and spent some time there. Then we drove to this Twilight store called Dazzled by Twilight. Everyone had alot of fun. We talked to the lady there and found where the ally Bella got lost in is. We took some pictures, and found the bookstore she went to. Then we drove to Forks and had lunch, then went on a hike to Marymere Falls. Then we drove around Forks and saw everything. We saw the Swan's and Cullen's houses, the police station, the high school, and Dr. Cullen's reserved parking space. Then we went to the other Dazzled by Twilight store and bought a bunch of cool things. For dinner we went to Sully's Burgers and got Bella burgers. They were really good. Tomorrow we head to "La Push, baby". "Okay, I'll go if you quit saying that."

Then we drove to Forks and had lunch, then went on a hike to Marymere Falls. Then we drove around Forks and saw everything. We saw the Swan's and Cullen's houses, the police station, the high school, and Dr. Cullen's reserved parking space. Then we went to the other Dazzled by Twilight store and bought a bunch of cool things. For dinner we went to Sully's Burgers and got Bella burgers. They were really good. Tomorrow we head to "La Push, baby". "Okay, I'll go if you quit saying that."
This is Cresent Lake. It was awesome! Also there is a picture of a dried crab and some sand that Tyler picked up on Whidbey Island. That is why we needed to go to Ikea. You cannot get this stuff at Ikea in Utah ;-)

Day 4
Day 4 and we are still finding exiting new experiences.
Today we said good bye to Michelle and Joey and headed further North West. We went to Whidbey Island. To get there we had to ride the ferry with our car on it. Next we found a beach where only locals go and found LOTS of sea shells. Especially sand dollers. They where everywhere. Tyler even picked up a dried out baby crab and put it in his collection.
Next we did another ferry from Whidbey Island to Port Townsend and then drove to Port Angeles. We ate dinner at Joshua's! Then we went and watched the sun set at the harbor.
Oh, we went to Ikea for the first time before we left the Seattle area. That was intersting. We picked up a bunch of glass storage containers with metal clips so we could store shells and sand in them (thanks to the Cartwrights for that suggestion). Here are some pictures from the day (again, more will be posted when we return).

Day 3
We went to a ward here in Kent today, just for sacrament. It sure is nice that the church is the same where ever you go. The spirit was strong and we were uplifed.

Next we went to Snoqualmie falls. It was amazing. We also saw the Seattle temple. Being Sunday we couldn't walk around it but it was still cool to be able to see it. It was a very nice relaxing day. Sadly, Tyler did not get to do any fishing. We head to Port Angeles tomorrow. We hope the girls don't wonder off onto any dark streets alone.

Day 2
It is day 2 of our trip. We arrived in Seattle and visited with Tonya's sister, Michelle. We went swimming in the rain, picked up our rain coats and went to Puget Sound and looked around for a while and then played games and prepared for Sunday (i.e. picked up food and Tyler picked up some fishing gear as he found out it is free fish weekend here in Washington).
I almost forgot one funny story. While we were driving to Seattle we were coming down the mountains and there were lots of waterfalls along the road. At one point the waterfalls were pretty much the whole mountain side (very pretty). Anyway, Toniann had her headphones on and was listening to music. We were telling her to look at the waterfalls and we (Tonya and Tyler) asked her if she was even listening to us, and we thought she said; "I am looking at them, really pretty, it is just water on rocks". We laughed and said that was a teenager response if we had ever heard one. Then we found out that she did not say that and that we just were using our parent ears and assumed we received a snide remark.
Well, hopefully tomorrow we will be going to some falls and possibly catch some fish. It will be interesting. Stay posted.

The trip has begun!
A little over 5 years ago, we as a family agreed if we read scriptures every night for 5 years we would take a big trip. Well, we were able to accomplish this task, so our trip has begun.
So, here is what we are going to try to do. We are going to try to post each night with the days activities so everyone can follow along with us. There will not be pictures for the posts until we return (Tyler did not bring his cable to get the pictures off the camera).
06/05/2009 - Day 1:
We were supposed to get on the road between 8:30 and 9:00 AM but Tyler had a work meeting that kept him on until 10:00. He said it never goes over 1 hour and it just happened that it did this time. Pretty funny!
We hit the road at 10:20 AM and drove through Nevada and then up to Twin Falls Idaho. The GPS we were using in our car kept telling us to turn around and go through Salt Lake City, but Tyler refused.
We hit some pretty powerful rainstorms while on the drive. We ended up getting to our Hotel in Yakima Washington at 9:50 PM MST.
It will get more exciting tomorrow. Ehlana said we sat on our butts and drove all day ;-).

Rockhounding
Tyler has been on week long furloughs once a month at work, so he has taken up a new hobby of rockhounding. Here are some samples of flourite which is used as a flux in working with metal.See what happens to flourite when you put a black light on it (below). Pretty neat! You should see this with a black light while still in the mine (amazing!)
Here is one of the geodes he picked up with Chad on a Friday as they explored the West deserts with an old time rockhound. They found secret places which they are not allowed to tell about, or so they say ;-)

Ehlana in yet another play. This time she is playing Emily in Your a Good Man Charlie Brown. This summer she is trying out to be in Tom Sawyer.
