One Year Later.
Today marks the one year anniversary of Sadie passing through to the next life.
I miss her. A lot.
It is good that life marches on. It is good to remember to hug my loved ones tighter. Feeling pain is good because it reminds us how much happiness and love we can feel. It is good to have a renewed determination to eek every ounce of happiness out of today.
So, in honor of Sadie, get out there and LIVE today. Share a cupcake with someone you love.

Happy Father's Day
Warning: Long and sappy post.
I am blessed to be surrounded by great fathers.
My Dad. He makes me laugh. Sometimes he will just give me a call for no other reason than to tell me a joke. I so appreciate his sense of humor and his love. Although we lived in different states for most of my time growing up, he made a great effort to minimize that distance with frequent visits and phone calls. I especially remember the Daddy/Daughter Date that he came to when I was in 7th grade. What a special evening that was. Although there have been many a Daddy/Daughter Date since then, I will always remember him making the special effort to be there. He made many sacrifices over the course of his life to be sure that my brother and I didn't go without. I never doubted that my Dad loved me and I am so grateful for the close relationship we share.
Brad, my step-dad. I hate to even call him a step-dad because he is so much more. We didn't really get along too well when I was growing up. But, that is so far in the past. Our relationship has matured to one of love and respect. He is the guy to dig me out of snowbanks when Ian isn't around. He's the guy we can count on to help us move or borrow a truck (or tractor) from. He's the guy that flips burgers at family barbeques. He's there to negotiate a great deal on a car. He's there. And he's the man that loves my mom. And my mom loves him. They are eternal companions and a great example of determination, especially in tough times.
My Grandpa. He was always bigger than life. Everything about my grandpa was big! Big trucks, big voice, big love for his grandkids. One of my earliest memories of Grandpa was when my parents split up and we were moving from Arizona to Utah. I remember pulling away from the house in his big truck. Although there was so much confusion and sadness, somehow I knew it would all be okay because Grandpa was there. As I watch his body become frail and weaker now, I am grateful for the special bond we have. I know that nothing will weaken the love we have for each other.
My father-in-law. I was blessed with great in-laws. Pete has always welcomed me into their family. Even when I was the flighty 19 year old that had a thing for his son. Pete has a kindness to him that is unmatched. And those eyes of his...they seem to laugh. I don't know how else to describe them. As Ian gets older, I see more of his father in him. Pete is quick with a laugh and things are just more pleasant when he is around. He has set a great example as patriarch of his family.
And best for last: my sweet husband. He is the most important father in my life as he is the father of my son. I can not adequately describe my love for this man. He is a devoted and loving father. I smile when I see Jackson watching his dad and trying to be more like him. He is kind and committed to us. He works so hard to make a better life for us. He will always be there. No matter what. I respect him for the man he is and the man he is becoming. He is tender and strong. His testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is pure and powerful. I love him for the way he respects his priesthood responsibilities and works to magnify his calling. He is patient and funny and strong and smart. Face it, the guy has forgotten more useless facts than most of us will ever know in our lifetime. And I love him for that.
I look forward to the day when Jackson will become a father. (A day that I hope is far, far away.) I know he will be a great father. How could he not be? He is surrounded by the best examples of fathers anywhere.

Mother's Day
I don't get it!
There are so many women out there that HATE Mother's Day. I personally think it is a great day to celebrate the incredible women in our lives. We all know that no one is perfect, so let's lay down that expectation that anyone should be and have a little party.
This year, Mother's Day was a bit lower key than in past years. I have been so tired lately that we did our best to keep it small. The highlight? Going to Jackson's school with him for their Mother's Day party. I let him know I would be there, then showed up about 5 minutes late. When I got there, he came running to me and I could tell he had spent the last 5 minutes fighting back tears. Those little arms wrapped around me and I bent down to hug him and give him a kiss. Then the water works started. I asked what was wrong and he said that he was afraid I wasn't going to show up. That broke my heart and made me love the little guy even more if that is possible. We sat down at his desk and had punch and cookies. He made me this adorable little flower pot and a card that made me cry like a baby. His teacher had put together a video of pictures of them throughout the year. That hour spent with him was definitely the highlight of the weekend.
Ian always is great about making Mother's Day a no-work weekend for me. This year he did make me help him a bit with the gate that he is building, but all is forgiven. ;) We went on a little date Saturday night and he took me to see Iron Man 2. 3 words for you: Robert Downey Jr.
Stop what you are doing right now and go see it!
All in all, it was a great weekend spent with the two boys I love the most. Doesn't get any better than that.

It may have been the missionaries...or the meds
but either way, I am having crazy weird dreams.
I had to post this one because I think it may have some hidden message I need to figure out.
What happened that was real was we had our big family home evening last night which was awesome. The missionaries (well, Elder Johnsen..who is from Salt Lake, currently serving in the Utah Provo mission. No way, right!?!...was on splits with a high school guy named Jack) came and did a little lesson on member missionary work and the Restoration of the Gospel which was fantastic. Everyone was there except Zac and T (missed you guys.) It was so wonderful to have everyone there and spend some quality time.
Jackson and I got home and had our little bedtime ritual reading scriptures and his fun book (lately Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. Spoiler alert: Greg goes into a women's restroom! Scandalous!!) I popped my anti-seizure meds and corrected my blood sugar with insulin (Type 1 Diabetes, yo!) and apparantly that is a recipe for crazy time.
Now normally I don't like to talk about my dreams a whole lot because it is like saying, "hey! This didn't happen!) But this one I found especially bizarro. In my dream, Ian and I were married and attending BYU. (Again...crazy and scandalous!) I was just entering the MTC because I was going on another mission. My cousin, Sherri, had met me for dinner at the MTC and I had worked some guy for a little Eiffel Tower made of chocolate. Then Ian met up with Sherri and me. He was complaining that my cell phone had too many numbers stored in it. We all took a seat in a lounge area and I asked him if he had Cowell for any classes this semester. He said he did for "Modern Musical Literature." Simon Cowell then magically appeared next to me and I turned to Simon and told Ian he would be glad when I left the country because he could delete all Simon's numbers from my phone. Laughing, Simon asked me how good a writer of lyrics Ian was. I told Simon that Ian could spin great lyrics and then muttered something Ian would say, but I kind of tripped over my words. Simon then said that it sounded like Ian, but then went on to correct my English. In my dream I was mortified. First of all because Simon Cowell thought I was trying to rap and secondly because he corrected my English.
Huh?
And in my defense, it is 2:00 in the morning and I just had a pretty good low blood sugar episode. Does that justify my koo-kooness in posting this? Only partly.
Any of you have any crazy dreams you want to tell us about?

First Grade Program or How I Cried During the Hukilau
Several weeks back, we had the opportunity to attend Jackson's first grade program. Oh my...what an evening!!!
The program was about different cultures they were learning about. Each class dressed up in the traditional (more of less) clothes of the country they were singing about. Jackson's class was responsible for Ireland and so they all dressed up like leprechauns and sang a song called "The Irish Jig." He wore a little green derby hat and his teacher rigged up suspenders made from sequin green ribbon. It was adorable!!! They all got up and did their Irish Jig while the other classes joined them in singing the song. He did such a great job!! He was particularly excited about his class singing this song because, as he said, he is part leprechaun.
Other songs they sang included "It's A Small World" (a family favorite), an Italian song, a song about Greece, a square dance song for the good ol' US of A, and "So Long, Farewell" from The Sound of Music" (Ah....Julie Andrews.) They also sang :"The Hukilau" to represent Hawaii. I don't know why, but watching Jack sing that song and doing the actions did a little something to me and I may have shed a tear or 5.
He looked so grown up sitting up there on the stage. Jack is a crazy combination of being shy and loving to be in the spotlight at the same time. The only reason I get that is because I am the same. He has been practicing these songs so hard and he did so well. We were so proud of him watching him up there singing so loud! He knew all the words and it was obvious he had put in lots of time to put on a wonderful show.
It was another reminder of how wonderful this life is. We get these moments of joy that will stay with us forever. Jackson is such a huge blessing packed into a little body. We love him so much!!
