Angela: Is She Really That Good?

Well, I am sitting here in a 3 hour final for my russian class. If you want details, ask. The attention isn't on me here though, its on Angela.
As I have been sitting here, I jumped on desnews.com and searched the archive for the name Bennion. Well, just so happens that the first two articles that popped up were published on the 14th of December were saying that Angela is one of the all-star swimmers of Skyline and of the entire STATE. Her and two teamates are expected to carry the entire swim team to their 8th consecutive state titles. I'll let you all read the articles. Just go and do the same search I did. Their awesome, and Angela, you are awesome!!

Teaser and a Story

TEASER

I noticed the other day that it has been much too long since I contributed anything to the blog. To rectify that situation I've gone so far as to write up an outline of a number of posts (totally nerdy thing to do) I'd like to make before Christmas. So it's off to the races...

STORY

This summer Paige surprised the family with camping plans. This was very unexpected as she doesn't like to camp (read: detests it) and none of us were pressuring her into such an activity. But when the boys heard it, they were stoked, to say the least. I was somewhat apprehensive as my favorite memories of camping don't typically involve cars parked nearby, 7 other families from the ward, 30-odd kids, and roughly 25 feet between campsites - but that was all about to change (that's my story and I'm sticking to it).

The picture below, taken on Saturday morning doesn't really do justice to the travails of that night. I put Emily to bed in a pack n play outside of the tents. I covered her in blankets and the crib in blankets much like you would a bird cage and as a result she was toasty warm, though hopelessly engulfed in pitch black. This didn't pose a problem when she went to bed, but it would later.

I put the boys to bed in the 3 man tent and had them toasty warm in sweats, and loaded down under blankets, complete with pillows. We were playing a man down (or two or three) since I had loaned Dad my sleeping bag and pad for Fish Creek, but we figured we had enough blankets and other stuff to make up the difference. We were wrong.

Paige was Chatty-Cathy with the other girls that night at the fire so I just went to bed. I was woefully un-prepared as I realized I didn't bring any long pants of any kind. So I went to bed in shorts and a long sleeve t-shirt and hoped that between the sweatshirt blanket and sleeping between the boys I would stay warm. In what I thought was a gesture of kindness I left the one sleeping bag we did have for Paige, since she would be sleeping alone in the 2 man tent, or so we thought.

At some point in the night (very, very late) Paige came to bed. Away from the fire and under a clear sky, the night was cold. Paige got in her bag and was nearly asleep when Emily screamed out. As you may recall she was sleeping outside both tents, basically in a pitch black tent of her own. It's not like we were being negligent, though it may have looked like that to the casual observer, and she was making it sound like that, but I promise we weren't. You may also recall that we were surrounded by other families 25 feet away in every direction, it's the middle of the night, and Emily was panicking as if being attacked by wolves.

Paige and I decided to wait it out and hoped she would go back to sleep quickly. That didn't work out. We didn't dare wait to long. Since I we technically already had 3 people in the 3 man tent, and the 2 man tent only had 1, Paige was nominated (and accepted) to sleep with Emily. This would have worked fine if Emily had slept.

For the next two and a half hours, until 4:30am or so, Emily cooed and laughed and refused to sleep. She wouldn't hold still and wouldn't stay next to Paige in the bag or under her blankets. Because she got out from the warmth she was too cold to fall asleep and since she wouldn't sleep, neither Paige nor I could sleep. Remember, the tents are adjacent to each other and the ripstop nylon does very little to muffle sound.

Paige reached the breaking point of exhaustion so we switched places at somepoint between 4:30 and 5am. I thought I was helping out. As you may guess, that was not the case. Paige now gave up the warm bag with the hyped up kid, for a spot between the boys under a thin little blanket. I "volunteered" to get in the sleeping bag and deal with Emily.

By this point Emily was nearing exhaustion and both she and I fell asleep after a quick round of wrestling and convincing. Paige on the other hand proceeded to shiver for the next 2 hours. Just about the same time that the Paige was beginning to succumb to not only exhaustion but also the cold, the boys and Emily woke up and were ready to go for the morning, and we had to get moving because we were on breakfast duty for all 8 families (approx 45 people in total). As you can see from the picture the kids were rested and ready to conquer the wilderness.

We haven't been camping since, though Paige has put it in the boys' heads that we're going to do it for a Boy's Night sometime soon. I think that's a great idea, so long as there are pillows, pads, and sleeping bags for all!

TARZAN

Here's our Clark on Thanksgiving morning! We just wanted a few more minutes of sleep, but he was ready to get swinging! He made a VINE so he could swing like Tarzan! We had a nice little talk about vines in the house and it has been moved outside to a tree! Staying ahead of him is not an easy task---one I fail at daily! And the knot at the top wasn't really a knot. It was only the first half of a knot.

Octoberfest

Thanks for the great time in SLC. Any trip that starts with a wedding and ends with trick-or-treating is a good one

Those smiley face french fries were a hit.

Sam LOVED Grandma and Grandpa's tricycle

Mary's big day

Yeah ... that's it ... right ... THERE!

So who needs a professional photographer???

I caught the big one -- his name is Erik!

Happy Birthday to Daddy!

We surprised Ryan with updated photos of the boys for his office. I had to remind myself throughout the photo shoot that it is impossible to get all 5 to sit still, smile, and look at the camera at the same time and then hope I caught the moment! Oh yeah, and be reverent the whole time because we were at the temple. I'm so glad I have so many little boys because they are so easily my excuse for my many shortcomings and failed aspirations! They're so worth it all!

Calling all Halloween costume ideas for our family---just the boys or include us all.

My favorite idea of "The Murdock 5" is going to have to wait because I think Soren might be a little too young to keep the afro wig on. And I'm a little late to start sewing sequined jumpsuits.

I've been thinking I'll just let them be whatever they want, but we've been "theme-ing" it for so long now, I cringe to think of dressing them up as random characters. Oh, I am pathetic.

View more of Family tree
So I'm just doing some research for updating the greater Bennion family website and wanted to see how this posted to a website. It's pretty cool, you can move the chart around and see jeb & ssb posterity (to be continued, with a new addition in October :-)

Angela

Yes, first date. how precious

yes the classic... Of all the fish in the sea... so now i have five fish. You can see Michael Phelps, Ryan Locthe, and Jason Lezak. You can't see Natalie Coughlin or Cullen Jones. (Cullen is a black goldfish - hence the name ha - but we've noticed he's turning whiter. He may be rechristened Michael Jackson.)

Fish Creek - a retrospective

The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing.
~ Babylonian Proverb

I fish because I love to .  .  . because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience .  .  . because only in the woods can one find solitude without loneliness; . . . not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant--and not nearly so much fun.
~ Robert Traver, Anatomy of a Fisherman (1964)

Okay, as requested: House Pictures
Front Yard with Cameron and Soren

Backyard views

The treed area is a steep slope up to that wall with lots of struggling fruit trees, grape vines and overgrown pathways with rosemary. We have a lot of work to do over the next year as we try to save some trees and remove some and plant some. But it's a great hill for hiking and exploring!

Birdseye view of entry from outside master. Front door is on the left with LR/DR combo. If walking in the front doors, to the right is the 5th bedroom/our office with a full bath and the laundry room/passage way

View from Living room. The Kitchen is to the right of the pool table. Also access Kitchen/FR to the right of entry way after passing stairs

The office

Kitchen and Family Room. Please pause at the kitchen tile in a lovely pale shade of pink. And the nook area behind Will is a useful full sized bar and sink for all our entertaining needs!

The Master Bedroom and lovely mauve tile accents or is that overload? And please don't overlook the pink carpet that is throughout our upstairs. It's my favorite! I never got my girl, so I found a house all done in PINK! Even the blinds are pink and give nice pink undertones to the contents of the room!

Looking from the Master down the hallway.

The first door on the left seen in the hall pic is the playroom. No, we did not do the painting. Although, a ceiling to floor Winnie the Pooh mural would've been what I would've done first!
Bedroom at the end of the hall is the Pink room occupied by Cam, Nate, Soren. You can see my trying out of some possible blue wall color changes.

After the playroom, the hall turns to the left and this is William and Clark's room. The old bunkbeds of Rich and Danny met their death with this last move and were laid to rest. But the mattresses still live in this picture. However, as of last week they have been replaced by new mattresses and bunkbeds. However, due to the proximity of the ceiling fan and the top bunk, much to Clark's disappointment, they are de-bunked.

So at long last, I post. Stop the cheering and applause, I know, I know, you've all been waiting with baited breath! Hopefully it is worth the wait... So I'll begin my ramblings with a Clark story! What else is there?

This morning I went into the boy's bathroom and could smell urine a little stronger than it should smell when a boy just forgets to flush. Then I noticed all the soaking wet tissues and paper in the garbage can. I'm not sure why we do this, but I put my head closer to get a better sniff. Maybe I read "Robert the Rose Horse" a few too many times. My eyes began to itch. My nose began to itch. And then "CLAAAARK!" Evidently he saw I had thrown away one of his drawings and was mad so he peed on it. I don't understand the reasoning, but that's what he told me. And just in case you are wondering, even though he peed in the garbage can doesn't mean it all went in there! So one bathroom is definitely clean at the moment. Perhaps I should be checking the other two!

William is reading like a champ. He gets tested each week off a list of 10-20 words he should know. I have a copy of the words he should be learning for the next several months. He breezes through the entire list without a hitch. And the little practice books he is sent home with take him 30 seconds to read. Last night he read me the entire "Are You My Mother?" without any help. He is loving soccer, but it looks like his flat feet are catching up with him and it sounds like he has shin splints. So we'll see how things progress and we may take a trip to the podiatrist. He's also started seeing the orthodontist to see if we need to start widening his tiny jaw to fit his permanent teeth. I meet with the Dr. next week to review all the x-rays. He is also loving piano lessons and it feels a little deja vous-ish with the comments coming out of my mouth---"Sit up straight, What note is this?, You have to count, Come on, we are almost done, just play it one more time!"

Clark loves preschool and soccer and pushing the limits and mommy's buttons. He found my hidden stash of Crayola markers and he and Cameron enjoyed coloring their finger and toenails red--and also the table and chair and Soren joined in on the fun coloring the door and wall. Crayola is not as washable as they say!

The twins are loving their enormous stash of Hand-me-downs from Ben Wright! (Thanks, Anne). The only problem is each morning they only want to wear clothes from Ben and then they rotate through at least 3 outfits each day and at least 2 pairs of pjs each night because of their excitement of new things! I detest laundry more than mopping the kitchen floor! Maybe because the laundry now piles up faster than my floor is dirtied

Soren is starting to talk up a storm-many words only well understood by family members! But he makes his point well. And he thinks he has taken up residence in Mom and Dad's bed each night. If we weren't so exhausted each night, we might be more prone to break the uncomfortable habit, but sometimes it's just easier to throw him in bed with us than try to settle him down back in his crib!

I now teach the 16-17 yr. old SS class. The previous teacher was a poor match so the kids would often go to other classes or sit outside. I've taught for 2 weeks and usually spend the first 15 min. trying to round them up from around the building. The only problem is since we are new to the ward, I don't know who most of them are. I've succeeded in having 2 in my class each week. I'm somewhat terrified because they just sit there like zombies and I want them to be excited, but I guess it's the age and we'll keep playing the BRT game and bringing food!

Ryan is now the YM 1st counselor so I'm adjusting to Thurs. nights with him gone and occasional meetings before church. And this weekend he's gone on a campout. He's been in the yard after work this week (cooler weather at the moment) replacing all our sprinkler heads, etc. We love having a big yard, but the work involved is a killer. Mom and Dad perform regular miracles on making PT always look so beautiful! (No pressure intended for the Oct. wedding!)

Well, that's all folks! You better have loved it or just lie and say you did because it took me 2 hours 45 min of frequent interruptions to get this done!
