I’ve been sitting on this for a while, not knowing exactly how to write it. But here it is.
Only Good Feelings is coming. And before it even releases, it has already won Best Narrative Film at the Manhattan Film Festival and Best Directorial Debut at the Chicago Indie Film Awards.
I still can’t fully believe that.
This film started as something deeply personal — a way to process the loss of one of my closest friends, Ian Friedman. Ian and I met at a military boarding school in upstate New York when I was sixteen. He was from Queens, I was from Long Island. We bonded over films. We used to talk about making one together someday.
Ian took his own life before that could happen.
Only Good Feelings is the film we never got to make together. It’s a crime drama set in New York City — about grief, codependency, friendship, and the desperate urge to escape. About two guys who think they can outrun everything if they just get enough money to flee to Mexico. They can’t. Nobody can.

The film stars Ryan McCartan, Elias Kacavas, Heather Burns, Ajay Naidu, Amanda Steele, and Ryan Whitney Newman. It was written by me and Grant Schumacher, produced by Michael Marlon, and distributed by SNR Films. It has screened at 9 international festivals across the US and Europe.
Director Moises Kaufman called it “gritty, raw, and beautifully observed. All the performances are spot on. This film by Shervin Nassi is a gem.”
