2$ bearing

that last post was long ago...oops, sometimes i forget to get back to things...  anyway a quick update on the schwinn typhoon i've been restoring:

-it's been powder coated and looks so good...have a couple pics i'll post later.

-i've managed to clean up some parts and install them: seatpost, post clamp, headset, fork, stem, kickstand and headbadge...

-the bb cups are pressed into the frame and hopefully a little later today i will finish cleaning up the cranks/chainring and install those as well.  

when i pulled the crank set one of the bearings, a single ball, was a gonner....super oval and ugly..as this little project has been a bit of a investment so far i thought i could just replace the single ball for next to nothing and keep rolling..  i went to bc as i'm sure chad would have given me the part, but he wasn't there so.....courtney (worked at canyon with her) rang me out for retail plus...whatever....  so i'll work on some of that a bit later on.

i looked at the fenders when i was pulling the stem out and realized how rusty they are, that's gonna be a project in and of itself...oh well......it will be worth it when i'm all finished up.

i also ordered a tank on ebay, well it's the wrong size...too bad as i like it and the horn is in great shape too....may look again after i get a little caught up on things

other news: well i've been enjoying gardening and the rewards of fresh produce.  last night there was yet another car crash on my street, think that's 4 in the last 2 years.  this was another 3am crash, guy was so drunk he hit a parked car, spun it into the next house down....took out a couple fences, managed to thread the needle of a tree (that would have ended his life) and a mailbox..  at least this guy didn't run, the last one did after a neighbor helped him out of his girlfriends 4runner that was turned upside down.  the guy doesn't have insurance, shocking i know so i hope there is a civil suit brought against him and the book gets thrown at him for a good long time.  what else.....the rain has cooled things down quite a bit in the valley so it's been quite plesant.

went to the jj grey & mofro twilight concert, was def out of place there..only stayed for jj grey, good show kind of blusie funk.

alright after a little time to breathe before i posted this....  the other evening i was at the twilight concert, rode a bike and i would highly suggest doing the same if you attend, to see beach house and the walkmen....both were fantastic and i even torrent-ed all their albums.  the walkmen opened and they were a bit different than the typical music i listen to but i dig them.  beach house is very m83ish and it took me a while to figure guy/gal..  she put on a great show, was very impressed and could tell she was a very kind and caring person...shame on whoever threw the water bottle at her.

now for the grody part: so as my eyesight is slowly getting worse i have gotten into the habit of taking my glasses with me to concerts, movies and other events...so that evening i was wearing my glasses and had my case in my back pocket...  i was also getting sick of people using space by me as a walkway to get closer to the stage then making no ground so staying in front of me so i stepped into the path and didn't budge.  after the concert ended i rode home, pulled stuff out of my bike bag and pockets and sat on the bench to see the animals.  i noticed there was something in my back pocket still, stood up and pulled out some sort of applicator.......gross......i was really appalled and am still disgusted.  exactly what or why does someone think that is in any way shape or form appropriate....i mean that's flat out f-ing disgusting...i, and i would imaging no one else in the world wants your disgusting cooch juice anywhere near me...i mean if your that kind of low life you are prob packing some vd and really your just gross.

now i've shared this story with a couple other folks and i was amazed at some of the responses i got: dan from work: "that's awesome, i wanna meet that chick"  mark from work: "that's hilarious"  am i just not seeing the humor?  would i respond the same if this happened to someone else?  i'd say yes, i'd still be grossed out...maybe i'm off but i certainly don't think so.  and there's a wonder why i don't mesh well with the group i work with.

ok, so i just want to thank the person for being gross and well causing me waste time in my life disinfecting things that may have come in contact with that thing.

yes it's been a while since i've put in a serious blog....lots of wonderful things have happened, some bad as well so i guess i'll do a quick catch up followed by what little projecto i've undertaken.

raced rmr last week and hung in until the last 1/2 of the last lap...take into account that i rode out solo as i missed the group

maybe not so good:
grade 2 sprain to my mcl playing men's league soccer, first game, 20min in, i'm about 8 weeks out
so sick of my job, maybe not so much job but people i work with and the mentality of how things funciton
haven't been racing much due to mcl injury
having a carpet beetle issue
having woolen moth issue
having uppity cat who poops just outside the litter box issue

onto projecto:
so a couple weeks ago i got on a little bender to find a classic old schwinn to restore.  with some looking around and meeting some very interesting people i found a bit of a junk show bike on ksl

now those are the pics posted on the seller's ad and yes those are road bars that have been turned upside down, schwinn no less.  so i went and took a look at this $275 bike at a yard sale and met the seller who didn't have a clue other than what "the bike guy" told him (and "the bike guy" is a whole other story which includes some serious crack and meth usage...)  so what i'm saying is that he was told he had a bike that was plated in gold and everything on it was worth extravagant amounts of money....just a little miss information he was given..  so i took it for a ride, ho hummed around, pointed out some things that needed to be done, asked if he had the original wheels/tires/bar (no).  he asked what i would offer and i continued to ho hum...he said how about 200, eek...pass...then 150..  i said that sounds alright but 100 sounds better his re: but 150 is fair...i said maybe with all the original parts but it's going to be a mess to track them down and cost some $$ to do so..  so he gruffed and took 100...and yay i was now the new owner of a schwinn typhoon cruiser bike.  i loaded into the back of the subie, made dogger sit in the front on the floor and drove it home.

schwinn typhoon was released as a middleweight cruiser bike and they were mass produced....so don't have much value other than they are fun, classy and i needed a little project as to not strangle people i work with.

the day before i took a trip to

the recycled bike, they are located on 1460E 3300S.  kind of a little hole in the wall place with, shall we say, an interesting staff...  i took a look through the piles of bikes, and i do mean piles, spoke with one of the brothers (t-mo, matt is the other) that run the shop about prices (a little spendy but if i didn't have the know how i would have paid the extra $)

this is a pic someone else took and posted, and it doesn't exactly represent what you might find upon visiting but it looks neat and i like black and white....so

so back to the day i picked up the schwinn, after i got it home, unloaded it, got the "updated" wheels, road bars and a couple other things off i took a trip to recycled bike again to see if i could get a wheelset and a handlebar..  no luck on wheels, but i did get a handlebar.

next i started cruising ebay for a set of wheels, ended up with this set of s7's with original westwind tires

now i haven't had a chance to dig into them, but they were stated to be coaster brake only, i have a feeling they might be a 2 speed kickback....won't know for sure till i open them up.

i stripped the bike down (finally got to use that park ks-1 kickstand puller, interesting tool now i'm glad i own it), here's a couple up close pics

and now it's at some random paint shop getting sand blasted and powder coated, should be done in a couple weeks.

in the mean time i am steel wooling and pollishing the crapola out of the parts i pulled off, they are in need of some serious love to get their shine back, esp the fenders....eek...  i don't know how many pics i'll snap as i go and if i do i don't know how many i'll post so here are some pics of what it will prob look like when i get it all finished up:

**i did a little research on the frame number and found the typhoon i am restoring was made march 1974 and had a original sale price of just under $60, not a great investment piece but i'm doing this for fun and for something to ride around the park or to epic...and if nothing else it will look super cool when it's finished up.  i'll post pics of that for sure.
