Hysteria - Plymouth Sound Studio Demo (1982)

My sister will kill me for this but sod it. This is the first and I'm pretty sure the only Hysteria demo ever put onto tape and has been kindly converted into mp3 format by my mate Graham who also did the artwork. Cheers mate,you really are a star for doing this one.


For those who don't already know, Hysteria were a punk/goth band from Plymouth. On I nearly forgot, thats Chris,my Brother In Law on the left. Chris was in Mascara and their record is also on this site. Chris and Caroline have been together for over 25 years now and have identical twin girls aged 10 (Kira and Freya) who are both budding musicans.

Not to be confused with their debut 12'' (One Of The Lads) this is John Lydon's little bruver's 4 Be 2 (Jimmy Lydon) and is produced by John (according to the cover anyway but there has been some dispute about that) Theres definately a PIL influence in there especially on the extra song "Bitch" Its good stuff. Listen to the bass and tell me I'm not wrong.

This sounds more Guns 'n' Roses ballad than 68 Guns on A New South Wales but I like it and the other double A side is more U2 than erm......68 Guns as well! I'm sure some of our Welsh friends might like it but then again, they might not.

The epic 8 minute plus version of Toyah's Ieya. Needless to say its crackly This,along with the Sheep Farming In Barnet EP was probably the best thing Toyah did in my humble opinion. Oh and the B side jumps once but don't worry about it because its not much kop anyway.

The Sisterhood - Giving Ground 7'' (1986)

For all you goth types out there. Both versions of this are different from the one on the album (Gift) Its a nearly three minute shorter version in fact which is shame because it wouldn't bother me if this went on for 45 minutes! The second track is an instrumental version. I loved the album version so was pleased to find this one on soulseek.

Ruts DC - Different View 7'' (1981)

This was the 1st single from the Ruts DC after they re-grouped and renamed themselves following the death of Malcolm Owen. Since then of course, Paul Fox has sadly passed away too.

Eater - Death Awaits Me Round The Corner 7'' freebie (1985)

This one came with the long lost The History Of Eater Volume One LP which I've still got as it happens on blue (or is it purple) vinyl. All the songs on that album and the 2 tracks on this 7'' have all re-appeared on the various Eater compilation CD's which have been issued since. There were only 5,000 of these singles and it didn't come with a picture cover.

Sham 69 - Rip And Tear 12'' (1987)

Its been a while since we had any Sham (or has it) This was their comeback single in 1987. The 7'' version A side (also on this 12'') is on the album Volunteer which was released the same year but this is the much harder to find 12'' version. Its not the greatest thing they've ever done but after 7 whole years of no Sham, it was good enough for me at the time.

Hawkwind - Decide Your Future 12'' EP (1993)

Theres not much you can about these legends which hasn't already been said. I love this band and will admit to being a relatively late starter with them (early 80's for me) Live,they are amazing (especially on acid in the good old daze) with all those lights and wierd and wonderful sounds. Only Hawkwind could get away with the 13+ minute instrumental version of Assassin featured on this one. And why shouldn't they.....its their song in the first place!

I don't think there is another band on the planet who have been so consistantly great but eclectic at the same time. Not for 40 years or so,that is for sure. The punks love em, the heavys love em,the hippys love em and the ravers love em. Yep,Hawkwind are pretty well loved!

Chelsea 2 Liverpool 0 FA Cup 5th Round (1982)

Seeing as its FA Cup day here in England and I'm not at Chelsea today, lets go back in time. Its the 5th Round of the FA Cup in February 1982. The European and League Champions Liverpool are at Stamford Bridge and are expected to beat struggling 2nd Division Chelsea. But it didn't happen did it : - ) An early Peter Rhodes Brown goal and a late Colin Lee tap in right in front of the Shed End brought mass celebrations in SW6. These were dark days for a Chelsea fan but this day was special. This was the one and only time my camera went to the Bridge and this picture was taken on the final whistle. Within a minute,I was on the pitch too (my first time on the hallowed turf)

PS - Matey in the front of me with the hair is now bald

PSS - Hopes of Wembley were dashed in Round 6 when the dreaded Tottenham beat us 3 2 also at home. We were winning 1 0 at half time as well : - (

SPQR - Don't Panic 7'' (1980)

The final one that I have from Plymouth's Optimistic label posted for Curious Guy. This one was a nightmare to rip. The A side unfortunately jumps twice but I managed to get down from double figures in the end! Luckily, the B side is better and that survived the jumping. Both sides crackle like only a good old Longy Optimistic Label rip could but don't let that put you off eh.

Theres a another old face I recognise from my days of working in the Dockyard in Guitarist Pete White (I use the phrase "working" very loosly as the Dockyard in Plymouth was once a holiday camp for many thousands of lazy b******s including my good self)

Now I need your help. Has anyone got the 2 missing records from the Optimistic series? 1) Jethro - Wind Of Change 7'' and 2) Revs - The Cure 7'' (cheers for the info Curious Guy) I would pay good money for either but I'd prefer you to just send them this way (inc cover scans) and get your name up in lights ect : - ) There must be someone out there with em! Burning Spear - Free Man CD (2004)

Burning Spear are one of my favourite Reggae artists. They first started recording as long ago as 1973 and Winston Rodney (AKA Burning Spear) is still going strong to this day. This was their 24th studio album from 2004 and its as good as some of their more famous efforts of the past. As well as 29 studio albums to date, the band have also released 6 live albums 16 compilations.

Burning Spear is one of the strongest proponents of Marcus Garvey's self-determination and self-reliance for all African descendants, thus leading to several album releases in commemoration of the Jamaican activist.

Burning Spear advocates messages of honesty, peace, and love, which tie in with his social and religious messages of Rastafari and black unity. Along with his musical message, the Spear continues to tour all over the world. Long live Burning Spear!

Smashing Pumpkins - The End Is The Beginning Is The End CD Single (1997)

You are probably wondering why they are up here right? Simple really. I love this band. Have done since the day I first heard them. This band helped me through some really rough times at a really low point in my life. I'll spare you the details but if you're a Pumpkinhead,your probably understand anyway.

If you have never had the pleasure of listening to the 28 track Mellon Collie And The Infinate Sadness double album then do yourself a favour and seek it out. Its probably the best album I've ever heard (non punk wise anyway) Its defianately my favourite album. Out of the 28 tracks, I like ALL of them. Can't be bad can it?

This CD single came out a couple of years after that and seems to be the one that they all forgot. Its not even on their greatest hits album which is criminal really but I believe that was because this one was on a different record label (Warner Bros) and was a one off. The music on this featured on the movie Batman And Robin according to the cover (I wouldn't know,I haven't seen the film) Take no notice of the last 2 throwaway instrumental tracks and take note of track 1. One of my favourite Pumpkins songs.

I'm so glad the Pumpkins are back. They might not be as good as they were but even a sub-standard Pumpkins are better than 99.9% of the crap out there today. Not only that, the new bass player is gorgeous as well.

The Out - Who Is Innocent 7'' (1979)

Its a band I know nothing about but seeing as they are on the Rabid label and it was recorded in Hulme,Cheshire then I assume they were from the North West area of England (probably Manc's) Its a punky,powerpoppy tune, a bit like the Vapors. Pretty catchy stuff if you like that sort of thing. If anyone out there knows anything about this lot feel free to share your knowledge.

Its only a game right? No it fucking isn't! Its a part of my life and when we win, I'm one happy bastard. And when we don't, trust me,I'm one miserable one. Yesterday had it all and is the reason I absolutely love,and always have loved football.

And todays solitary post is Chelsea's 1994 FA Cup song final song. It was our first major final for 22 years and the team celebrated by going "into the studio" to record this awful ditty. They then went on to lose the FA Cup final 4 bloody nil to Manchester United. Thats Chelsea FC for you!

The Now - Into The 80's! : The 1978 Demos (2005)

These underrated, underachievers started life in Peterborough '77. They started out playing venues such as the Vortex, alongside 999 and The Flys and later went on to tour with the likes of XTC. These recordings (as the title suggests) are demos from 1978 that were eventually released on a German bootleg vinyl LP.

Something a bit different today. A classic double 32 track vinyl LP released back in 1988 featuring a whole lot of classic and not so well heard of oldies. Some would call this "Prog Rock" I suppose (don't all moan at once)

Listening to this one after so many years was suprisingly a very enjoyable experience. Ripping it wasn't not so enjoyable as it took bloody ages but at least it didn't jump. Maybe in just an old hippie at heart - I dunno. I especially enjoyed Fairport Convention, Roy Harper,Focus,Nick Drake and Jefferson Airplane. I can honestly say theres only 2 songs on here I didn't like. Not bad out of 32. Anyway,enough waffling..........

John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett - Headbutts 7'' (1981)

Famous for 1977 hit "Really Free" here is the another Otway & Barrett one that cracked me up. Whatever they were doing on the live side certainly entertained the audience. Listening to these again after all these years make me proud to be English!

Siouxsie & The Banshees - Peel Session 7'' EP (1991)

Only 2,000 of these were ever made on white pukey Plasmatics style vinyl (ropey artwork included) The songs all appeared on the eariler Peel Sessions album but I thought some of you might want this one too. All 4 songs were recorded from '77 and '78.
