complex number

The ring of complex numbersMathworldPlanetmathPlanetmath ℂ is defined to be the quotient ringMathworldPlanetmath of the polynomial ringMathworldPlanetmath ℝ⁢[X] in one variable over the reals by the principal idealMathworldPlanetmathPlanetmathPlanetmath (X2+1). For a,b∈ℝ, the equivalence classMathworldPlanetmathPlanetmath of a+b⁢X in ℂ is usually denoted a+b⁢i, and one has i2=-1.

The complex numbers form an algebraically closed field. There is a standard metric on the complex numbers, defined by

d⁢(a1+b1⁢i,a2+b2⁢i):=(a2-a1)2+(b2-b1)2.
