You know how they say, "A watched pot never boils"? Well by "giving up" today we got two things we were waiting for.
Item one was my camera. I was told Saturday when I bought it, that it would arrive either Monday or Wednesday. When I checked the status Sunday and Monday it stated that it was due to arrive Friday, the 28th. That's after Christmas folks. I really thought I would at least have it the day after.

Item two- Hubby's rechargeable battery for his tool and light set through Sears. They were out of them last Wednesday. So I got a raincheck for it. I really hoped they would call before Christmas. I called this morning, speaking of which, did you know they don't open until 9am? And the girl answered the phone to tell me that I had 8 more minutes! Hee hee. Well she took my number, and when I called back about a half hour later (funny she didn't call me back?) they looked and said it wasn't there and they had no idea when it would be.

So we decided to go out as a family and spend some of our gift cards.
We returned a few hours later having hit Toys'R Us, WalMart and Hannaford with piles of groceries and bags of Legos and DVDs in hand -there it was, a Staples box sitting right in front of the door in the freezing rain covered in plastic (thank you UPS).
We came in and started unloading. Checked the caller ID, yup, Sears called. And we were across the street from them when we were shopping!
See, as soon as I gave up, they "happened".

Yes! I taught a few people this summer! I sat down with 4 kids, T., J., M., and S. (my DD) and did a basic pattern of Yin Yang.

I was about to say no, but I got a cute cross stitch Christmas mouse pattern booklet for Christmas from my MIL. She also gave me a huge stack of yarns too! I know the SBQs are geared to cross stitch, but, stash is stash!

On Saturday:
I have been wrestling with my digital camera on and off for sometime now. It's a 1.3 megapixel camera with very little zoom. I bought it for a deal a couple years ago and it has served me well for what I paid for it. Right now I can take pics but can't load them into the computer, which is rather pointless and only happened about 2 days ago.
Hubby asked me to go shopping with him for my present. I was supposed to be baking all day for presents for a get-together today and for the neighbors and said as such. He asked again. I had a feeling it was for a camera since he had said I might want to go with him because I might want something specific. The only specific things that he won't or can't get for me are computer related. So I knew it was something "fun".
The kids told me on a 1, 2, 3 count what it was.....
Hmm, stay home and bake or go get a new camera? I grabbed my coat!
We struck off with sale flyers in hand.
Not long after that I have a Sony on its way to me (we didn't buy it there nor at that price). They were sold out in store and it's being sent to my home. It came with a 1GB card for free. Bonus!
So now I am expecting a new camera at my door either tomorrow or the day after Christmas.
I was planning on saving for a new camera this year anyways. I had planned on using any gift cards and such to get it between my birthday and Christmas. I love the ones I have seen that take video, and zoom so nicely. Plus now I will be able to get nice shots of the falling snow, and have the snow show!

Today we went to my sister's house for a Christmas celebration. It was a nice get-together with my Dad, Stepmom, Sister, her four kids and Fiance, my DH, DS, DD and I.
We nibbled on turkey wraps and BLT's, veggies with dip, fruit with yogurt dip and cookies. Yummy! The kids were happy, noisy and fun. The adults were about the same I guess!
It was nice day.

Tomorrow, Christmas Eve, will be quiet in preparation of the next day.
On Christmas Day my MIL, FIL and BIL come up and we eat and exchange gifts. The gifts normally take quite a while. We don't have turkey or ham as most do, we usually have cold cut sandwiches with veggies, olives and pickles. That way anyone who is hungry can eat when they feel like it.
I will see my Mom and Stepdad once they return from a trip out-of-state to visit with my Aunt T.

WOOT! And a huge thank you to Paula D who saved the day with a link to Fibers and Threads an online shop in New Hampshire who just happened to have the Indian Summer!!!!!!!!
So for a whopping $2 and no shipping I will have the last color of thread on the way to me so I can stitch the "Seasons" San Man Originals freebie pattern I have been dying to stitch for ages (it's way down at the bottom of that linked page) ...... Well once the bookmark for the way overdo exchange is done and sent. I know better than to do anything until that one is done.
The remainder of the needed threads is on the way by now too I think, thanks to KnittyKitty. I am paying her back with cash.

Stitcher's Corner

Look what I found!
There is a local brick and mortar cross stitch shop in Maine! This is after years of Googling and scouring the yellow pages with next to nothing coming up!
I was looking on the Olde Willow Threads site for retailers, which led me to a site which led me to a site (-you know how that goes) which brought me to Stitcher's Corner. :)
Located in Wiscasset (okay still an hour away or so for me) it's locally owned by a stitcher. Very small town feel from what I can tell, which is a plus! To have a business owner who stitches and knows what you are talking about! *goldmine*
I talked for some time with her on the phone. No she doesn't have Olde Willow, and since retail sales are slow, bad economy that it is, she probably won't offer it any time soon. Can't blame her there, she says that when she stocks a product like thread, she will order the whole line.
Look at the stuff she has! Oh my, I think there will be an afternoon trip sometime soon. She even carries some fabric cut right there!!!! But until then I can call the toll-free number and order away!
Maybe KnittyKitty will come with me....... Quality girl time!



Oh and I am looking for #015 Indian Summer in Olde Willow. I shudder to think I may have to place an order online where the shipping costs more than the thread! Just for one piece of thread!
If anyone knows of a place near them or with good shipping prices on Indian Summer, could you drop me a comment here?

Tree time

I am decorating the tree (finally). The kids always want to help but they don't realize- I am traveling down memory lane. Holding each ornament, thinking where we were when we had it before. How I held some of them, with a toddler underfoot, or..... *sigh, this is what Christmas is all about!
They will add the final touches tomorrow, as they do every year, after Mommy has had a chance with a trip down memory lane....

Mom's Letter to Santa

Dear Santa,

I've been a good mom all year. I've fed, cleaned and cuddled my children on demand, visited the doctor's office more than my doctor, sold sixty-two cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground.
I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my son's red crayon, on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when I'll find anymore free time in the next 18 years.
Here are my Christmas wishes:

I'd like a pair of legs that don't ache (in any color, except purple,which I already have) and arms that don't hurt or flap in the breeze; but are strong enough to pull my screaming child out of the candy aisle in the grocery store.

I'd also like a waist, since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh month of my last pregnancy.

If you're hauling big ticket items this year I'd like fingerprint resistant windows and a radio that only plays adult music; a television that doesn't broadcast any programs containing talking animals; and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide to talk on the phone.

On the practical side, I could use a talking doll that says, "Yes, Mommy" to boost my parental confidence, along with two kids who don't fight and three pairs of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools.

I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks chanting "Don't eat in the living room" and "Take your hands off your brother ," because my voice seems to be just out of my children's hearing range and can only be heard by the dog.
If it's too late to find any of these products, I'd settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same morning , or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam container.

If you don't mind, I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season. Would it be too much trouble to declare ketchup a vegetable? It will clear my conscience immensely. It would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house without demanding payment as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family.

Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door. I think he wants his crayon back.

Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the door and come in and dry off so you don't catch cold. Help yourself to cookies on the table but don't eat too many or leave crumbs on the carpet.

Stash update

Things have been added to my stash over the last month or so. Either by online store sales, swaps, RAK and the like. Now for your viewing pleasure. I am having stash amnesia, I don't know what I mentioned and when so I may repeat myself. Ah well.

Jenna contacted me that she had a stack of DMC rayons that she wouldn't be using and asked if I'd like them. *grins, I said yes. So love the rayons. They are a pain to work with. They sort of jump when you use them but they look and feel soooo nice.

Cobweb Corner had a sale for the Rudolph booklet I can't get around here and had been wanting for over a year. Couldn't pass that up!


This is the Mill Hill Kit I mentioned earlier. Love it!

I have given my Etsy account a little exercise too, snagging Pamela Kellogg's Christmas Biscornu and Seasonal Blackwork Biscornu designs. (Boy, she mails fast too! :) )




I received some Six Strand Sweets threads from Tonya on the San Man forum. It was a contest item. I was the lucky poster! They are colors with names like "Witches Brew", "Candy Corn" or "Grape Slushy". They are gorgeous! Not sure which is my favorite.

And lastly, my San Man November & December wishlist post for more SSS threads was granted by a few kind ladies there. I can hardly wait for them to arrive! It's so kind of them to do such a thing for me! I will post pics of those as soon as they arrive.

White stuff

The snow started Sunday night and stopped for a short time this morning. This was taken about 10 minutes ago. I wish I had one of those digital cameras that took video too, it looks so pretty coming down. The still camera never shows the falling snow very well.
Surprisingly there was no delay in starting school this morning. Many towns canceled or delayed today too. But not ours. So the kids hopped on to the bus encased in fresh snow from playing in the snowbanks while waiting for the bus to arrive.
Now the kids are really going to be nuts in anticipation for Christmas!

My son went in to school today. It will be his first full day of school in over a month. Running 10 miles up to go and get him/drop him off everyday has been brutal on the schedule (and gas tank). Not to mention hard on him. We had him alternate most days , ride in on the bus in the morning and I would get him at 11:30 one day, then drop him off at 11:30 and have him ride home on the bus the others. That way he wouldn't keep missing the same classes.

I have Pamela Kellogg's Christmas Biscornu pattern (only one of them left there btw!). I am dying to stitch it up! But I have to rake the snow off the roof, shovel a bit, tackle some housework and decorate the tree. Oh to have more hours in the day!

I found a neat site where you can hear the American Bittern too.

We have had this bird in our yard for 3 days now..... I have seen it fly once, it's wings are gorgeous!
We couldn't figure out what it was. Well, we have confirmation from a neighbor (who is very well educated with animals) that it is a Bittern. According to the MaineBirding site I think it is the American Bittern. My neighbor said it's very unusual that it's in my yard as they are normally very secretive animals. They live in marshes and swamp areas.
It's been eating worms I think pretty steadily here....
I love birds.

Oh to be a cat...

"CAT DIARY

Day 983 of my captivity.

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.


They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are

fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for

the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in

order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my

dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit

on the carpet.



Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their

feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it

clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made

condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am.

Bastards!



There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was

placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However,

I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my

confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what

this means, and how to use it to my advantage.



Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my

tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try

this again tomorrow - but at the top of the stairs.



I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and

snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly

released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is

obviously retarded. The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him

communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports

my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in

an elevated cell, so he is safe.

WARNING!A few incomplete thoughts to share (out of order as always ;) ):

We have been busy with the regular day-to-day stuff here.
We may get our first snow tonight/tomorrow.
It's been ages since I last posted. I have tons of photos I haven't taken yet. Keep meaning too! And I have stitched very little.

My son is doing better now. He's attending school half days now. He goes in for the follow-up on Monday, while the kids are on vacation for Thanksgiving.

DH has found a new hobby- Playing online Canasta (for free of course!) So it makes it a bit more complicated getting computer time in the house now.

I am at the early stages of Christmas shopping. It will be a small Christmas, with all the toy recalls and a tight budget (have you seen the price of heating oil? Ack!) Also need to decide how I am going to take pics this year of the kids together so I can send them out as the Christmas cards. Loved doing that last year!!! Made things to much easier for me.


I have gotten stichie mail and more is on the way. Will post them all soon, I hope. Until then this one may tie you over:(copywritten pic so take a clickety to see.) I ordered this from Pamela Kellogg. Just had to have it, I think it would look nice in the entry way.

My son went to the doctor's last Thursday on his 4th day of a fever, sore throat, light cough with the sniffles. I was told it was probably a virus and to do all the things I was to keep him comfortable, rested and well hydrated. When I asked about a Mononucleosis test the doctor said that to test him then would probably give a false negative. But if he wasn't better or worsened they would have to see him again.
He went in again yesterday, he wasn't any better. It's positive- he has Mono (untreatable) with a sinus infection (treatable with antibiotics) to boot....

I posted this entry, or sort of this one, in a hurry. I was on the phone most of the rest of the day (after the app't and the doctor's call with the test results) with the doctor's office, B.'s school, and family and friends. So I posted in haste and having reread it today- it was a mess. Hopefully you can read this a little better.

I had to arrange several things with the school. He has already missed 8 days of school including today. I arranged a few things with his teacher so he doesn't fall behind. I had the doctor's office fax a "out until further notice" note to the school. And gave them a heads up. It looks as though yesterday not including my son that 6 other kids weren't in his class (of about 24 kids)- all out do to fevers, which in case I didn't post it here then, was what he started with.

When I had Mono in '94, it started on my 18th Bday. I missed about 3 weeks I think. It was awful, esp trying to make up Midterms during regular class time. My Anatomy/Physiology grade never recovered. You can't miss that much time dissecting a cat. Just can't make up that kind of work at home! I was dehydrated enough then to be hospitalized and it took months really until I was really back to "myself". So keep my DS in your thoughts and prayers that he gets better very, very soon!

So sorry for the things I haven't finished (Bookmark Exchange, Surprise Send out to you Vicki) and the posts I haven't seen or made. With the water troubles, then B. being sick, etc. I just haven't had a second to take a breath. I will contact my Bookmark Exchange partner today- with an apology, yeah I think I should tell her it's me at least so she doesn't keep waiting..... It will come just later.

I ordered a few things, well not all for me! I ordered the Just Cross Stitch Ornament Issue, 2007 Magazine from Jenna at One Star's Light for my flosskid Poppy. (That's a record I think for hyperlinks in one sentence!)
And I got the Mill Hill Kit- Violin for myself.

The Lady in Red design should be on its way tomorrow I think, maybe early next week. I keep thinking it would be a perfect ornament!

Normally I would have picked up the magazine from Border's while I am out and about, but I haven't been out or about much. I took my son to the Dr today. He's had a fever since Monday morning (had to pick him up at school) and it will not let up without back to back meds. I am keeping him home the rest of this week for sure and possibly the beginning of next if he isn't better. The Dr said if he isn't to bring him back in then. Let's hope it breaks and he gets better!
The water is still a smidge bleachy (is that a word?) but it is starting to look cleaner- you don't want to know how bad it was! So I did my first dishes in the sink with tap water in over a week!!!!! YEe-hah! Not the dishes part, just that I didn't have to boil everything before using it!

Annoyed

I am still battling weird water. It was clear for me to take a shower, then when I started it back up for my son it was brown again. DH and I figured we could shower in it but not the kids. So we packed up out stuff and went to one of my neighbors house. I have done one load of laundry here today - it is so mucky, yuck! So that's why I did it with bleach. The other two loads I took to two different places. What a pain in the butt!
I did a load of dishes in the machine thinking it would use bleach and then heat to kill anything I can't get by hand. The mugs and most of the things along the top rack are black spotted. So I am rerunning them through without anything on the bottom rack.
Wouldn't have thought this water thing would consume so many days.

The well company is coming up tomorrow (*cough) with the bill and to see about why it doesn't smell like chlorine yet. It was supposed to smell like chlorine the day the well pump and stuff was done. They had treated it, as is by law, and I was supposed to run everything - hose and all until it smelled like bleach then I was supposed to let everything in the house sit and stay overnight to kill anything that could be lurking in the pipes/appliances. I let it run Saturday for hours with no change.....

Keep your fingercrossed for us please!

Water Well Repair

Well so far:

• the pump in the well is dead
• it needs to be replaced
• raised
• filled in around it
• with a new cap
• so far it'll run +/-$1500

Good part is we may have water as early as tomorrow morning.

This is what I received in the "Start Your Christmas Stitching Exchange"......... I received the package over a week ago but just got to the picture posting now.

I also received word that the package for the same exchange I had sent out made it to her. I found the receipts in the "gum pocket" of my purse (I have a zippered pocket on the outside of my purse that is for gum for the kids- never normally put anything else in there!) Sorry I forgot to take a pic before I mailed it.....
Just not myself lately.

We have no water.

I showered yesterday, started to handwash a few things in the sink and began filling the washer up to do a load of laundry. The water worked fine, then as the washer filled it went to a trickle. I thought it was odd, restarted it, the same.Checked the faucets- barely a trickle. Checked the fuse box in the basement- nothing looked amiss. No broken pipes or anything like that.
I freaked. I hopped online and tried to sort out any info I could get. It ended with a call to a plumber. He even tried a few suggestions over the phone. Still no water!
The plumber will be here this morning. The only good news I guess is that we pulled the lid off the well and it's very full.
Keep all of your fingers and toes crossed for us. Hope it's a simple and cheap problem.
The next time I say whoah there's too much stored water- kick me. We are using it now!

I mailed the EMS exchange item for the "Start Your Christmas Stitching Secret Pal" exchange. I sent it West. As of yesterday it had been a week. (Tomorrow being a holiday is no help either) I had this funny feeling and mailed it with delivery confirmation and hung onto the receipt and delivery confirmation slip. I then lost both. She hasn't posted yet that she has received it............

stitchie good times

I am struggling to make the bookmark. I am just not in the mood to cross stitch! I may have to do blackwork or something if I am to get the thing done in time.

On other stitchie things:
The black/charcoal grey mix Webkinz blanket is coming along. I stitched on it more last night. This pic is of the day before or so I think. I added some stripes to it, a thin one on the end, and a thicker one in the middle. I will add another on the other end. I am not counting or anything, just winging it. It's good mindless stitching.
Here's the test swatch for DH's navy blue afghan. It's the original yarn I picked up, with the same stitch and a (much)larger sized hook,a Q hook.I love how it looks! It feels like a dream too. I am not sure if I will stay with this size or not. And yes I know it's all bumpy, this is my second time "really" crocheting. Check out how much yarn I have used. With the smalled sized hook I had nearly finished the first skein and hadn't even gotten the second row done!

Soft Navy Yarn

Navy yarn

Would anyone happen to know about the yarn called Natura? What it is like?
I am trying to find more yarn in Navy that I can use for the afghan.

I started stitching the afghan - thank you B.!- in a double crochet. It is coming out great but will not stay that way. I have started row 2 and am nearing the end of the first skein. Um, not good. So I think I will restart with a larger hook. Plus I was wondering if I could throw in a another navy color to add weight and size but still have some of the same soft texture. The regular Simply Soft doesn't appear to be available in navy blue.

an afghan

DH asked me (which he never does!) to make him an afghan. He wanted it soft like DD's sweaters and navy blue. DD's sweaters are something chenille like. Erm, too expensive.
SO it began- the search for an easy pattern and the yarn to go with it.

The pattern was this and called for thick yarn. The thick yarn was Homespun which has a bumpy texture, and I have used before, but the color is not so uniformly navy blue. So I grabbed several skeins of it on sale this weekend at the Knitting Festival (aka a sale at AC Moore). Then while at Michaels I grabbed more of it (yeah coupons!) and some of the Caron Simply Soft Quick which is about $3.50 a skein, and is only a 3ouncer (50yd) but the perfect shade of navy blue! It is sooo soft!
DH after "inspecting" them decided on the SQ. So I returned the other yarn and picked up a few more of the SQ. It's going to be expensive.
So the other possible option is to use a different pattern, so loved the fast one, *sigh, and possibly use the regular Caron Simply Soft with the Quick as stripes or edges or something....... Could pose a challenge as they are different weights.

I am going to try and crochet this one- two the girls at Craft Night have done these and wow, they look great and seem to be faster than knitting. Never mind the fact that it's easier to rip out rows of mistakes in crochet than in knit for me I think.

the other updates:Started round three on the Bookmark for the exchange, and again, not liking it so I am going to change tactics completely and do something totally different. Let you know how that goes!

I almost forgot about a biggie for me: on my journey to find and finally get my hands on Holly Hobbie! (Which wasn't as bad as the journey to get the original Strawberry Shortcake). I won a cross stitch pattern book(let) on eBay a while back now. Funny though I thought I had posted about it here and didn't, anywho.... This is her now. Just not for me. I prefer the original.

Looks as though they have "fixed" a character again! The Care Bears Have had plastic surgery, and I am guessing will have attitudes to match. They did this to Strawberry Shorcake, now the Care Bears. Eee-gads, let's hope they don't touch the Smurfs!

It's September and it's 88F- with the humidity it says it feels like 90F. And the real kicker is that we will have the heat on in a few short weeks.

not so productive

I stitched for many hours last night on the Bookmark Exchange for the Flossmom forum(during yeah Heroes!, and beyond) to come to a conclusion. I just don't like the design. So having found another "back up" design I am going to cut yet another piece of fabric and restart. Later, maybe during Craft Night, I will spend the 3 or so hours frogging the first two starts. Mustn't waste valuable fabric!
So back to the drawing board. Another floss toss... Then start stitching again. But I think I will stick with the grey Monaco I was using.

Well this one is not new, but it sure looks like it! I have cleared out a bunch of things to neaten it up and make me happy. I couldn't find the right green I was after to load through my photobucket to make the background all fancy, so I decided to cheat and go through the regular templates.

Looks like I am officially a Sweetheart!

Tomorrow is big time cleaning day. Not really sure what to start with since I was supposed to do my job shadow then. But, in reality it works out because I can clear up things in preparation for our weekly Craft Night. I am making this one completely, 100% kid free! The kids have had to be around at different houses, on and off. This time I want it "stitchers only".
So job shadow Friday morning. As soon as the kids get on the bus I am hopping in the van and heading over to S's school. Wish me luck!

Well I have been on, I swear. We can watch those YouTube videos now! Hello, enough old cartoons and drum solos to last for hours of enjoyment.
I am still sorting out the activation with Roadrunner. And seems that I can't comment on Blogger, it sort of hiccups, but, I can zoom around the internet now!

Let's see, in crafty news, I have done:

A little shopping for my flosskid Poppy. :)

Knitted all the parts for a baby sweater, as of now it isn't assembled. I need a little help from my neighbor Knittykitty.

Knitted, ripped out completely, restarted, ripped out a row, and now pausing the matching baby blanket. Seems I am goofing the purling somehow and I just don't trust myself to try it later at night. Maybe I can squeeze some time during the day. *cough, yeah! Maybe!

I have received the name to send to for the exchange going on at EMS. It's an exchange to start your Christmas stitching. Sounded like fun, especially since I can just buy stuff and send than stitch....

Started cross stitching the piece I wanted to do for the bookmark exchange. I made the mistake of starting it on 14ct aida, and simply put I hate it. So I will still do the same design I had started, just on another piece of fabric. I haven't decided yet which type or color fabric, just that it'll be at least a 28ct piece.
No pics yet, just seem to be eating camera batteries lately.....


Oh and wish me luck. I am job shadowing on Thursday morning. Not a clue what to wear just yet.

explanations

I am not sure who has noticed what, but, I am still wrestling with my internet connection. There are days that I can't access anything. Others when I get halfway through something, then, "Poof!", bumped offline. Then what I try to get right back on it says that the line is busy (yes, it's dial up), and I have to more or less reboot and purge stuff to be able to get back on. And when I am about to head out for this or that , like van appointments, I just can't afford that time to do that.
So if you happen to notice I am not around much, take heart, I am trying!

I have pushed the send out deadline for the Bookmark Exchange to October 13. I couldn't even access flossmoms for a couple days at all and then after that only for a few minutes here or there. So I thought this was only fair to the stitchers.

August, in a blur

I was here, I swear. Just not much in an online sense.
And I have no idea where to begin!
The Stich'n Bitch (aka Craft Night) has continued on. This week we are meeting on Thursday night as Knitty Kitty's house. I plan on working on the baby sweater that I started the gauge for last night. Starting the matching blanket would be even better then, meaning that the sweater was already done, but I won't hold my breath. Life always has a way of changing the plans we make. I am not making it for any particular person. I just wanted to make something besides the several dishcloths I have made so far. I thought that making a full sized sweater (*cough, my size) would take a long, long time. So, making a smaller one still gets the process down with making the pieces and then putting them together.
*update on the sweater- the gauge is "close enough" and I have begun the first piece, the back of the sweater. I am also going to learn how to do both sleeves at once I think. *grin.
Our little private road has turned into quite a crew! We have spent many an evening or afternoon with our many neighbors. Cooking out, horseshoes, pool(s), wiffle ball. This year has been the best of them all. The kids were riding their bikes to each others' houses and having games of "Manhunt", wiffleball, kickball, and many more. It was neat to have so much going on. My two would complain about the busyness of the week only to ask on the Saturday, "Can _____ come over? Or can I go see what they are doing?" One day Knitty Kitty and I took 9 kids to Dundee Park. You should have seen the faces on the beach as they saw out huge group walk up. It was great. Hubby and I have other couples to hang out with.
We had our first successful yard sale. By successful I mean we made more than $20 after sitting out all day. This time we set up with two other neighbors. Which draws more people and makes the time pass by so quickly. DH and I took in about $56. And it cleaned out the house a bit. Now we will continue on. Cleaning things out and possibly have another sale. If not, Goodwill and the Salvation Army will make out very well.

Knitting news:
I have knitted up two practice dishcloths.(pink and red)




Then I played with some soft yarn with the same pattern. (in blues)


Then I bought some pretty cotton yarn and made this one. I think I will keep it for myself. I don't use them as dishcloths. Instead I use them as potholders, like for bowls of soup, to protect the table.

I ordered two books for my collection:
Crochet for Dummies
Knitting for Dummies
The crochet one was recommended by a fellow Craft Nighter. Just couldn't beat the price so I got the both.
Another I think on my to-get-in-the-near-future is one called Knitting for Peace. I took it out from the library and think I may "need" it for my collection. Yeah, I usually get things through the library first, then decide from there what I want to keep on hand or not.


~Now for the Van Rant:
I blew a tire Saturday night while in the Subway parking lot. It was about 6:30PM and I had both of the kids with me so they could use their free meal certificates for participating in the Summer Reading Program. Anywho, it blew, and I didn't have the cell phone on me, which I almost always have on me so it was odd. Never changed a tire in my life and as I was starting to tackle it, a passerby stopped and helped me. It wasn't long though before we realized my spare had rusted on the underside of the van! So by about dark I was able to reach DH and have him come down to tackle it. Still stuck. So DH took us home and drove out with a pump to get the tire inflated enough to get home.
Lucky for me, VIP was open on Labor Day. I didn't bother Sunday since I have been fighting this cold for about a week now. So I have a spiffy new rear driver side tire just in time to get down to get the can inspected and have it fail. Why you ask? It needed new tire rod(s) and stuff in the front. Bad, bad van.
Then tomorrow a.m. I have an appointment for the two new tires in the front, now that the original problem is fixed. *Sheesh!
So what does that bring me to? Um, $567 spent at a quick count on the van in under a week.

OH and 5 appointments this week between the van (four) and my dentist appointment. Yeehah!

It has been ages since I answered one of the SBQs. But, I think you all understand. Right?

I was taught shortly after I was married by my stepmother. Must have been 1996 or 1997. It was a small kit that I started off with. Too bad I can't recall what it was exactly.
Inspired? Um, not really. I saw what she had done and thought how I'd like to do that.
Sort of like how I got interested in starting to knit. I say "starting to knit" because I was always interested in watching people knit and crochet, I just hadn't been hit with the urge to give it a shot myself. I was at an appointment waiting for what seemed like ages. There was a woman across from me, her fingers flying with knitting needles making a scarf. It was beautiful. I asked her a few things about it. Then maybe 6+ months later I think it was I dove into the knittyland. *smiling

Thank you Jenna! This is the pattern I made. It was small, simple, and interesting to boys and girls to stitch. I got "Ooooh!"s when I showed it to them.
The border with green, then red, J. chose to go around it was all his own idea. He did a great job with his color choices.
I left lots of room around it so that once printed it gives some room to add whatever you like.

cross stitch lesson

Sorry about the blurriness . Bad picture taking time but I needed to get it done before he took it home with him.

Here is the final piece. J., who is 11 finished this up in two days I think. Top pic is the front, the second is the back. He plans on putting it on a card to give to a friend who was away visiting family. I think he did a great job!
T., who is 8, finished hers I believe and then took it home. I didn't get a pic of that one. Will see if she can bring it back then take one then. Plus I'd like to see the final piece anyways.
It was cool to see what each child did after stitching the main part.

Yarn Over

Craft Night was at S's house. All four of us made it. And I learned a couple of new knitty things!

I am using a simple online pattern for dishclothes, some odd, icky yarn to practice with and size 9 needles or so I think. Yep, size 9.

I'd like to make some as presents for Christmas. Keep your fingerscrossed for me!

Knitty Kitty was great deciphering the pattern for me and showing me the stitches I needed to do. She's a teacher (professor), it shows, such patience!

H. won't be able to make it next week, she goes on vacation with her family. But since DH is planning on attending the Red Sox game next Wednesday.... Wait should explain that- DH is taking the Downeaster train down with his cousin, her husband, and their son down to the game. They will be there most of the day. Well they won't be hopping back on the train home until 6pm, and where it's Craft Night, we usually start by about 5 or so. So I will have my two kids, and one of DH's cousin's daughter (she's not a baseball fan ;) ) and so I was thinking of hosting Craft Night here, at my house. With kids this time, since there's no other choice really. DH usually takes the kids out if I host, or keeps them busy while I am gone.

Cross Stitching 101

This is day two of Cross stitching 101.
I sat four of the 5 kids down yesterday at the kitchen table for a cross stitching lesson. We started right from the beginning. Explained aida, how to hold the needle, and so on. By about the time I was showing them how to make the X's, I had one lose interest. A little while later my daughter was all done. (She has an ongoing project all her own. Sort of a freestyle embroidery I guess is the best way to describe it.)
It was two left, and they were really getting the hang of it. :)
I created a pattern for them. At first I thought of making a simple flower pattern so they could make it for their moms, but the favorite flowers of the moms were too different from each other. So instead I tried to make something they could get in to. And that was "cool" for boys and girls. The answer was a Yin-Yang symbol.
The two have finished the symbol and moved on to wanting to make a border and background. I left that part for them to decide.
I think, if I can get their okays, I will post a pic or two of their works tomorrow.

Oh yeah and I will post mine too. I picked up the started one and am now doing a little simple border around it. I was thinking maybe giving it to the boys so they can make it into a card or something. Not sure yet. Could be a cute little ornie or something. It's been so odd stitching on aida. I don't like it so much anymore now that I have played around with higher counts and fancy colors.
We had a hard rain the day before. The humidity had lifted so I had a couple of loads of clothes on the line.So it was nice to sit under a tree in the yard and stitch with the breeze and fresh air. It totally made my day.

Looks as though I will have to get with the program over on my livespace account. It's so empty!

A Mini Vacation

So, "Where did I go?"
Well the double eye infection cleared up with meds and I managed to finish the Webkinz blanket. It was in use right after completion. DD liked it I think *wink.
There have been two Stitch'n Bitch nights. The first Wednesday was at my house. The second at S.'s (must ask her if it's okay to link to her from here, or mention her name here) They have been wonderful. We were discussing it last time as a matter of fact. Seems the crafting isn't the main reason we are getting together! Hee hee. The humpday laugh until you cry has done wonders for me. I look forward to it, and by Monday start planning what food to bring. Yes, got's to have the good eats!
The kids and I went with my Mother-In-Law on a mini vacation too Boothbay Harbor. Headed out from Portland Friday, early afternoon. Met up in Gardiner, then traveled on to Boothbay from there. We stayed at the Smuggler's Cove Motel . What a blast! Hit some of our favorite shops, like the saltwater taffy shop. The weather was hot and humid Friday but had leveled off after a huge thunderstorm Friday night. What a site that was! Gorgeous! With the second story view we haad over the water and pool you could really see every flash. We returned home by about 4pm Sunday. Seems as though I needed an extra day in there to prepare for the regular old days to come! Hee hee.

I logged into EMS today and had only 1600 messages to catch up on! I am here guys. Just trying to catch up on all the stuff I missed during my eyes troubles, day-to-day busyness and then vacation. So I may not be posting, but I will get to what you wrote, hopefully soon!

It's in the eyes.

Yup, I went to get it checked out. Was at the point where I couldn't read, watch TV, knit or anything. I would wake up after a couple hours from discomfort and eyes glued shut. Yuck.
When I called my new Dr I was told they couldn't get me in soon enough (new patient thing) so they told me to go to the Urgent Care Center. I didn't bother with my old Dr, since it would have been much, much further for me to drive. I was there at the Urgent Care Center only a half an hour, then walked out with prescriptions in hand.
With only the first dose of the meds I was less swollen and feeling more comfortable. Looks as though I let the infection(s) continue too long, huh?
So, bad me. My eyes still sting a bit when I strain them, like reading more than few lines. But with time I should be back 100%.

Webkinz blanket WIP

Here it is.... so far. I can't remember what the yarn is called. I may have the slip in the bottom of one of the knitting bags so that I can post the brand and color name. The yarn has this neat crinkley look and feel. It winds up as I knit so I have to untangle as I go from time to time. But it looks great. Very homey I think.

Anyone notice I am using a different floor than usual? That's the livingroom.
I won't be knitting as much today - I am battling eye infections. Joy. I get so blurry it makes things a challenge.

A little stitch here or there....

No Stitch Wednesday yet. I think the way to get it started will be to hold it at my house and send invitations out. Real simple ones. Left in their doors. *chuckle. I am thinking along the lines of, "Craft Night. Bring your craft and some drinks to enjoy." Then the date, time, blah blah. I keep talking with the other girls , with them saying how we should be getting our nights going. What better way then to get it rolling, eh?

I need to update, for future reference "Chiblums". This refers to the three kids I am watching over the summer in addition to my own two. Odd though, they all even like the name. Almost makes them a club I think. So some weeks I have 5, others I have four. So I have been rather busy this summer. Most days I try to take them to a local swimming place, not really the coastline beach, though I still refer to it as such. It has a sandy area, swimming, picnic areas, and so on.... I pack a cooler and let the Chiblums exhaust themselves. *grin

I have managed many rows on a mini blanket for my daughter S. I bought this yarn at least a year ago because of the color (yup, purple, who knew!) and how soft it was. OOoooh so soft. The set back was that it has this sort of ripply texture to it. Not twisted, more of crinkled I think. Well, I had tried to get it started with no project in mind over and over again a few weeks, maybe months back. The knit monsters were definitely against me. Then I sat down the other day after the Chiblums left and started it. I wasn't getting all tangled in it or anything this time. So I rolled with it. My daughter came out admiring it and asking what I was making it into. Then I asked her if her Webkinz would like it. She giggled and said "Yes". I told her it will be simple, soft and homemade. She said her Webkinz like things that way.

The Chiblums have been gone two days now and I have had some alone time with the my son and daughter since Wednesday. They seem to be enjoying it. I have too. We visited my Mother-In-Law, Sister-In-Law and her two girls today. I haven't seen the baby since she was born. She's 9 months old now! Yikes!

Tomorrow the kids -B., S., and I will be off to see my Grammy. We plan to go out to have some seafood in Old Orchard. We already argued about who was paying. So I 'd better have all the money out and in my hand when we order.

Then on Saturday we go as a family to Funtown/Splashtown USA for hubby's employer's annual picnic. The year they decided to pay our way in, but we are on our own for food. Grrr. Better eat before we get there!

I was taken back today. Stunned really.
This is the shortened version.......
My neighbor K. called to ask me what the good online shops were for getting threads. She needed some she said to finish a UFO. I couldn't remember which thread it was but I do remember it was one that you can't get around here. So I told her, with rates for shipping and such.
She then called to to tell me she emailed me with a list of what she was getting and that I could add on something and pay her back if I wanted. I said I would take a look and shop around more online for her once I saw what she was after- never know what deals I can find for her!
Hours later I got to my email to have a peek and couldn't see her email anywhere! Just as I was about to check my junk folder, then call her if still not there, I recognized the ABCStitch email addy. In the subject was a message about a gift certificate.
Oh, my. I couldn't believe it. She had really tricked me. Whoah.
She didn't have to really.

Red, white and blue

Today is the day of my daughter's birthday party. As it stands now I have no true headcount as to how many kids are attending. Happens every year. SO ,I usually make at least 15-20 goodie bags and hope it works out. I never go home with extras, since I will give them to the little brothers/sisters as they return to pick up the sibling they had dropped off.
This year I am going to get helium filled balloons. :) I think all the kids will like that. The cake and ice cream are already here to be lugged over to the bowling alley.
I don't have the kids parties at home any more. It's easier to have the noise and confusion some where other than my house! Plus my house is small.
So wish me luck for a smooth red, white and blue themed party.

It's a midweek thing.

I forgot to mention. There may be a Wednesday night Stitch'n Bitch thing happening on my little side road in the country pretty soon. Not entirely limited to just (needlework) stitching. We have about 4 people including myself interested and, so far, the midweek works for all of us. I am not sure if we are going to shoot for next week or not. Especially since this Wed. was a holiday. We hadn't discussed the first night.
So far we are all in agreement that we will probably swap houses. Especially based on who has what with other family members. I think we are all sort of hoping to kick out any other family members to the other neighbors' houses. Since I have a pool table, another neighbor has a swimming pool- well you see what we are getting at.
This could be really cool.
One neighbor crochets, another makes light switch covers, another I have sort of crafted with, no, wait I should say I have gotten my hands on her... Hee heee. She's a fellow cross stitcher, knitter and now blackwork can be added to her what she can do list.
The best part is I think that we all would get along very nicely.

And an angel. I have never seen those before and what's really cool about that is that I can use it over and over. Won't the kids be jealous!

I am just getting caught up on the pictures....... Sorry.
This is the little goodie that I ordered through One Star's Light. I was thinking how I probably wouldn't hang the Margaret Sherry cats on my walls but I love them so and thought, "Why not on a knitting bag?", so there you have it. An idea! I think I will either: 1.) stitch it on waste fabric or 2.) stitch it onto regular (evenweave) fabric and then make it into a knitting bag. I like the type that's gathered near the top with rings as handles. I have one now, an old one and like how it sort of seals itself but it accessible at the same time. I keep thinking that a bag with sort of a quilted type of style, maybe with the do-dads of crazy quilting here or there to personalize it even more. I could incorporate my favorite colors. And with it being a quilted type style I could always add more to it later. Possibly follow up with the other knit kitties of hers.

Funny, huh? I don't wear or do flashy. But for some reason I am comfortable with the idea of a funky bag. Yeah, I have been seen happily in public with my Strawberry Shortcake bag. :)
