Christmas

We had a wonderful Christmas. I told the kids they had to stay in their rooms until 6:30. I heard them whispering about 5:30, and Justin and I laid in bed and talked until the clock hit 6:29 and the kids burst out of their room and hurried down the stairs. They ran in and said "it's 6:30". They were so excited. It didn't take long before grandma and grandpa and Justin's sister's family were up too. With everyone here, it made opening the presents last a lot longer which was fun. At about 10, we had a big yummy breakfast of biscuits, egg gravy, and lots of bacon. It was so good! After that we just laid around most of the day and then ended the night with the kids watching a movie and the adults playing a game of Cranium. The girls won, ha!
Santa brought Nathan a BB gun. I was a little nervous about this at first, but he really had a great time shooting. I think he was outside most of the day.

Santa brought had a High School Musical dance mat. It is a lot of fun. We even got grandma on it to take a turn. Talk about a calf workout. Hannah is really good at it. I know it is not Dance, Dance Revolution, but it was a lot cheaper!

Santa brought Isaac an MP3 player. He was very excited. He loves to listen to music. There was a lot of Kid's Bop going on Christmas day.

I know that Justin will not be very happy that I put this picture on, but this is what Justin loves about Christmas. Staying in PJ's and playing the X-box as long as he wants. He and Adam had to play all the bowl game match ups for NCAA. I think they were up until almost 2 am.

The closest thing to a sleepover. Being with cousins is so much fun!

Christmas Eve

We had a really nice Christmas Eve this year. Justin was coming home from San Diego that day and his sister Sara and her family were also arriving from California. We had a really yummy dinner with ham, rolls, potatoes, and pie. With everyone arriving late, it was probably close to 7 before dinner was served. The kids had a lot of fun playing with cousins and of course were really excited about Santa coming...except Hannah. She didn't want him coming into our house so I told her that I had heard Mrs. Claus was probably going to be helping deliver in Tucson this year and I was sure that she would come to our house instead of Santa. That seemed to be okay with her. The kids didn't end up in bed until about 10:30 leaving the adults getting to bed after midnight. It was a great night. I love having the house full of family.

This is how the boys passed away the time while they waited for their cousins. It is a position they are often found in.

Hannah, Nathan, and Isaac with their cousins, Grace and Noah. The sleepover didn't last too long though. We had to separate them so they would actually go to sleep so Santa could come.

All the stockings. I think we just barely fit into the living room.

Poinsettia Bowl: BSU vs TCU 12/22/08

Justin was able to go to San Diego and watch BSU in the Poinsettia Bowl. He drove up the day of the game with one of his friends from work who is also from Boise. They had a great time at the pregame and game. Even though Boise lost by 1 point, Justin was really glad he went. Although, I was left to wonder...why wasn't I invited? I stayed home with Justin's parents and the kids. We had our "game-day dinner", pizza, and had a great time watching the game.

I was excited to look through his pictures and see one of him and Mika. Although, all I found was this. Maybe that's why I was not invited..ha!

Samuel the Lamanite and Calories

Wow, it has been a while since I have posted. Justin's parents have been here and we have been having a great time. Last Monday, Justin asked his dad to prepare Family Home Evening for us. He decided to do Samuel the Lamanite. The kids really enjoyed this. They had talked about it in church the day before so they had a great time showing off how much they new to grandpa and grandma. Afterwards, during the closing song, grandpa sneaked off and went upstairs and pretended to be Samuel. We all went in and threw paper balls at him. It was a lot of fun.

The kids continued to have fun having a paper ball fight with Grandpa after we were finished. Poor grandpa, he was a little out numbered!

Now, you may ask what has been keeping me from making new entries. Apparently, it has been all the time that I have been spending shoving food into my mouth. It seems most pictures taken of me are those while I am eating. I do look content.

I think I have consumed as many calories this week to sustain me for the whole month of January. I'll try and put my fork down and get some pictures from Christmas posted soon:)

ChristmasPiano Recital

Last night was the kids annual Christmas piano recital. They have it in Tucson at Fellowship Square. This is apartments for elderly who can live on their own. The people are always very friendly and seem to really enjoy the children coming and performing for them. They have a very old piano that is really quiet so you have to play very hard. Combine that with nerves, and it can be challenging. The kids both did a great job. I got to play a duet with Hannah this year. That was fun. I always attempt to play a song, but usually end up so nervous that I only play half the notes. I did a little better this year, but still messed up. Its hard to play when your fingers are shaking! Enjoy mom and grandma.

Vail Jingle 5k and Santa's Little Helper 1k

Today was the annual Jingle 5k and little helper 1k. It was a beautiful morning weather wise. The wind did pick up by the end, but that's expected in Vail. I had my best 5k time so I was happy, and I got 3rd place in my age group. I have to thank Charlyce for moving. If she was here, I would have been knocked out of the awards. The people who put on the race always make the awards. This year was a really cute snowman tree ornament. The kids had originally told me they did not want to run, but at the last minute, Hannah and Isaac decided that they wanted to do it. I'm guessing it was the red finisher's ribbon and candy cane at the end that changed their minds. They weren't in the best running clothes, Levi's, but they did great anyway. I have to take a minute to be a proud mom and brag about Hannah. She is such a natural runner. It is pretty amazing to watch. She came in 5th place overall and was the 2nd girl. The only girl to beat her was about 11. Isaac wanted me to run with him. He had one hand holding mine and the other one holding up his pants. It was funny to watch. I kept asking him if he wanted to let go of my hand, but he didn't until the last 20 feet or so. He was very tired by the end, but he ran the whole way. Nathan and Justin were there to cheer us on. Thank you Kellie for taking pictures for us!!

Cute and not so cute

I guess I should start with the cute. Today, the school nurse called and said Isaac was not feeling well. I went and picked him up. He said his waist hurt. I had about a half hour of work left, so I put on a movie and got him on the couch. He cried to whole time. Miraculously though, as soon as I finished work, he felt great. I think he just needed some mommy time. We were watching TV and two boys were talking. One said to the other "its a date", just meaning they were going to meet later. This is the following conversation:

Isaac: Oh gross. Now those two boys have to kiss.

Me: (totally shocked) What. Why would they kiss?

Isaac: Because. He said that they were going on a date. When you go on a date, you have to kiss.

Well, I guess I better hurry and get this out of his head. That's all I need is to have him as a teenager thinking he "has" to kiss everyone he goes on a date with.

Now for the not so cute. One of the things I love most about Christmas is the lights on the tree. I love to put the kids to bed and sit in the quiet dark and watch the lights glow and just feel the warmth from them. Well, looks like it will be a while before I get that again. Isaac and Hannah decided they needed to take all the presents out from under the tree and count them. You know, just to make sure things were fair. I have asked them several times not to do this as they knock ornaments off and I don't want them getting the wrapping paper ripped on the tree (I know, I should be more easy going). Anyway, I asked them to put them all back. Isaac decided he need to go all the way to the back of the tree. On his way out, he stepped on the cord plugged into the wall tipping the tree and breaking the cord. So...no lights. Now we have to undecorate the tree, buy more lights, and start over again....if any of the stores still have lights left for sell.

Lines Equal Happiness

I was reading a friend's blog the other day and for the month of December she is writing about something that makes her happy for each day. I think this was a great idea and love reading about the things that make her happy. Today, I found myself in a very good mood. As I was walking through the house, I realized what it was. I know there are a lot of things about me that are odd, but one of them is that I love to vacuum. I love watching the lines form on the carpet as I go. I was able to get my house clean yesterday and there are still remnants of the lines on the carpet. Now, it may sound silly, but this just brightens my mood. So, for me...lines equal happiness.

Saint Nicholas

On December 6th (5th this year as the 6th was a Saturday) for the past three years, Justin has been blessed to be able to help underprivileged school children in the Tucson area celebrate Saint Nicholas Day. He gets to dress up as Saint Nicholas and fly in a helicopter to to schools to meet the awaiting children on the playground. All the children get to go through a line and get a gold chocolate coin from him while he gets lots of hugs, smiles, and thank yous. While the children are out with him, the teachers are inside delivering backpacks filled with simple gifts (donated by people and companies in the community) to the desks in the classrooms for the children to find when they go back to class. For some of the children, this will be the only gift they receive for Christmas. This is an event he looks forward to every year. The kids are so excited and grateful. It is a great way to kick off the holiday for him.

Precious Moments

For some reason, the last week has been really hard for me. I don't know why, but I have just been mental. I don't think I could actually talk, most of the time I was too busy yelling at everyone. For some reason, I just could not shake it off. I couldn't find any joy at all in my kids and was just not wanting to be a mom. Well, after a lengthy prayer Wednesday night I decided Thursday was going to be the turn around for me. Yesterday I volunteered to help with taking the second-grade students to the new music auditorium. This meant being on a bumpy, loud bus with approximately 75 students. As I sat there next to Hannah, I wondered why I hadn't thought to take ibuprofen before I left the house. Then came the precious moment. Hannah reached over and took my hand in hers and held on tight. My heart softened and I felt so happy. She didn't let go until we had exited the bus and made our way into the auditorium and she had to separate and sit with her class. I am so thankful to Heavenly Father for blessing me with her. Apparently, it was all I needed to snap back into reality. Last night was the second and third grade Christmas music program. It was so much fun watching Nathan and Hannah perform. Nathan got to play an instrument, and Hannah was in a dancing group. They both did an amazing job. The best thing for me though was the feeling of happiness, peace, and gratitude that I had been missing all week. I am so thankful for Nathan, Hannah, and Isaac. I am also thankful for my husband, Justin. He definitely takes the brunt of things but loves me anyway...I think:)

Random Thanksgiving Stuff

Thanksgiving was really good this year. My parents and sister and her daughter were able to spend it with us. It has been so nice having them here. They leave in the morning and we will miss them. We ate way too much food, had fun playing games, and enjoyed being with one another. We even got mom out on the tennis court for our annual game. She does not play sports and has never wanted to join in. She was to all our families events and was our biggest supporter, however. It was a lot of fun playing with her. She did pretty darn good too!

Golfing

My parents are here and so my dad and I went on our annual golf trip on Tuesday. I had never played before until about four years ago. I really enjoy it. But, the best thing about it is being just me and dad. Golfing with him is quite funny. He is a good golfer, but he definitely likes to complain. One thing you are sure to hear every time, "Good crap. I've never in my life hooked a ball like I am today"..repeated ever other hole or so. The next thing you are sure to hear is, "Even though the golfing is bad, the fishing is great." A round of 18 takes about four hours, one of those hours being spent looking for golf balls. It is like an addiction for him. This last round, we lost 10 balls but found 25..ha! He doesn't like the trees here though. They draw blood.
Lucky for him he has a 25 foot expandable pole to help him grab the balls.
A success!
Getting ready...
Okay golfers, how's my swing?

Free pictures

A friend once asked me how I could volunteer to coach my kids. I've decided my answer must be free pictures of me and my child. It is fun to get them after each season. This one actually turned out pretty good! Hannah's volleyball season is over. They had a celebration party at Dairy Queen last night and got their trophies. The girls were so excited. Here's to free Wednesday nights....until the next season starts in January!

Nightmares

Hannah has had nightmares on and off for over a year now. There was a time last year when she was afraid of about anybody and everybody, especially men. I practically had to carry her in the grocery store. It was a little ridiculous. I finally put her bed in the boys room since she was too afraid to sleep in hers. The thing that just gets me is how her little brain comes up with the things in her dreams. We don't let the kids watch anything over G ratings. After not having a nightmare for a while, she has had two in the last week. I really hope they are not indications of something that is going to happen. Here are the last two:

Hannah and I are in a department store. Two guys come in and start shooting. We have to hide, but one of the guy finds me and then they drag me out into a car and drive off.

The family is at a store. A bunch of "bad guys" come in and take her and set her on fire.

How does such a sweet little girl dream such awful things?

Bitter-sweet goodbye November 15, 2008

Last Wednesday, I received the news that my Grandpa had passed away. I was glad to hear he had passed and would be able to be out of pain but very sad to have him leave this world. I will miss him and can't wait to see him again. I think I am still just shocked how fast everything happened. I left Thursday after work and drove to Las Vegas to meet Ginger and Jaikka (my sister and her daughter). We left first thing Friday morning for Jerome, Idaho. It was a very long two days driving, but we made it in good time and without incident. We were even able to fill our gas tank with a low of $1.83! We went to the viewing that night. I stayed in the back not wanting to see the open casket. I have the picture in my head of what I want to remember. It was fun seeing old friends and family members from both my mom and dad's side. Saturday was the funeral. It was just beautiful. My Grandma wanted a lot of music and so between my mom and her sisters, there were five musical numbers. They did a great job. The spirit was definitely with us. I can't believe they were actually able to sing as I was crying like a baby. There was a family dinner after the grave site, and Saturday afternoon was spent with my siblings and parents watching some of the Boise State game (of course we couldn't miss that, ha). The best thing about the trip was spending time with my brother and sisters. I love them all so much. I really have the best family in the whole world! Even though this was not the best of circumstances, I am so glad I could see them. I miss seeing them as often as I did when we lived in Boise.
Shayla, Tracy, Ginger, and me red, puffy eyes and all!

Sunday we went to church and then spent the rest of the afternoon at Grandma's house visiting aunts, uncles, and cousins. It was fun to see the great grandchildren playing with the toys I use to play with not so long ago. Ginger had the stomach flu so she had to stay back at mom's. Yuck
Me and Grandma..isn't she beautiful!
Monday morning Ginger, Jaikka, and I headed back to Las Vegas where I went to bed very early. Luckily she was feeling better. Tuesday I drove back to Vail in time to pick up the kids from school. I am thankful for my husband who was able to work and do things he needed and care for the kids. I am also thankful for my friends who helped while I was gone. I really wish Justin and the kids could have been there, but it was too long of a drive and too fast of a trip. What a whirlwind weekend. I'm glad to be home, but I better get back to work. I've got a lot of catching up to do and have to get my house ready. My parents come in Friday!

See you later Grandpa. I love you!

WHY?

After about a week of having clean laundry piled and picked through in the laundry room, I finally make it upstairs to put it away in the kids rooms today. Imagine my surprise when I find blue and pink fingernail polish on the walls and the carpet. The culprit, Isaac.

Me: Why did you do that?

Isaac: What, I didn't do it. I don't know how it got there.

Do kids really think we are that dumb????

Sunday Ramblings

What a day this Sunday has been. As I was getting ready for church today, my brother and sister-in-law and their three small children were on my mind. They live near Las Angeles and they had to be prepared to go to church today knowing they might have to walk through people standing out front holding signs and yelling at them because the people hate Mormons and blame them for prop 8 (even though Mormons only represent about 5% of those who voted in California). There are e-mails going around saying that they must "take the Mormon church down". It has been really upsetting to me. I've had a hard time sleeping the last couple nights because of this. As I drove to church, I thought about how lucky I am to have a nice drive to go where I can freely worship. After all, this country was founded by those looking for religious freedom. Whatever happened to "in God we trust" and "one nation under God". Anyway, I had been praying really hard that all those members of the church would feel Heavenly Father's love today. Who knew that I too would feel this so strongly this day. As I walked into sacrament meeting and saw the Stake Presidency, I knew, as I'm sure everyone else did, there was a big change ahead. I felt the spirit strongly as the opening song came and of course, the tears started to flow. There was a beautiful musical number which made me feel the spirit even more. The time came when it was announced that Bishop Slade and his presidency were being released. He has been such a great Bishop. Everyone loves him. I feel blessed that as Justin has served as his executive secretary, my kids and I have had the opportunity to be around him more than other bishops in the past. I will miss his friendly smile every Sunday. He then announced that he would not be in the ward any more as his family was being moved to another ward's boundary. My first thought was about my friend Jillian. She is the Bishop's daughter-in-law. She is not a member but her family has been coming to church for quite some time now. I really love her and know that someday she will be baptized. Was she going to go to his new ward? Again, the tears came. I really hope she will stay in our ward as so many love her and her family. I know the new bishopric is called by Heavenly Father and I know they will be terrific too. We also had our first primary program rehearsal. Wow, what a crazy mess that was! I know these thoughts don't really flow, but I wanted to write them down anyway. I love the Lord. I know I am his daughter and that he loves me, and I know that as I felt his love today, many others were feeling that same love. I am truly grateful for this.

Road Trip to Las Cruces

Last weekend we were able to take a drive over to Las Cruces, New Mexico and watch Boise State play. Since fall in our house means college football (mainly BSU), this was a great way to spend the weekend. We miss being able to watch them on the blue turf. We went up on Saturday and then stayed in a hotel after the game. The drive was just under four hours. We took Justin's car, and I have decided that mini vans were made to keep parents sane. You can separate the kids and keep the fighting down a lot easier in a mini van. At times, the drive seemed a lot longer! All in all, it was a fun time though. Boise played well and beat the poor Aggies 49-0. After the game, the players came by shook all the fans hands and gave high 5s. The kids loved this. Yes, I am including my big kid (a.k.a Justin) he got to shake the coaches hand too. We swam at the hotel the next morning. Isaac will only get in up to his stomach. Next summer we are going to have to work on that. Nathan and Hannah are great swimmers and love it. It's always fun when Dad is able to swim too. After that, we walked around town and ate at a Mexican restaurant and then headed back home for Justin to do his homework. Only four days left of his class!

Halloween and turning 31

We had a fun Halloween. The night started out a little crazy as I had procrastinated doing some sewing on Hannah's costume. In a hurry, I sewed her shoulder straps on backwards. Of course, I had used a very tight stitch so it wouldn't come undone. No way to pick it apart. Luckily there was extra fabric so I cut and sewed it correctly without it looking bad. There is a reason I don't sew often!! We started on our street. We only see some of our neighbors once a year, on Halloween. The boys were afraid that everyone would have dogs that would jump out at them from the houses, so it was a little dramatic (or pathetic) at first. Justin and I were wondering why we even went out as we pushed our kids to the doors to say trick or treat. Hannah was brave. After our street, we went over and met up with the Hansens. The kids had a blast from that point on. Melody was out in her yard with her fire as usual. What a great tradition she has. I love walking by the fire. We then went back for our annual chili feed with friends. What a perfect evening. The temperature was great. I still can't believe I can sit out in the yard at 8:00 at night on Halloween in short sleeves. Definitely not in Idaho!
Now, for turning 31. First, I have to say that I have such great friends. It was nice to hear from each of them through email, cards, facebook, and the telephone. I was able to talk to Charlyce on the phone. It was nice. I sure miss her and miss talking to her every single day! My morning started off with a 7-mile run with Melody and Nicole. What a great way to start the day! Although, this is the conversation I had with my mom on my cell phone as I began the run.

Mom: I sure hope you have a great day.
Me: Couldn't be better so far. I'm with two girlfriends running 7 miles.
Mom: Well, if you think that is fun I guess it is good. Sounds like pain to me!

The only question I have as I turn 31 is how in the world can I have both acne and wrinkles. How can that be! My skin is worse now than when I was 21 or even 17. I truly believe that there is only room on my face for one or the other. Augh!! I'll end this post with a funny conversation I had with Hannah as we were putting on makeup before going trick or treating.

Hannah: Mom, am I going to get agnus when I grow up.
Me: What? What's agnus.
Hannah: You know. The dots on your face?
Me: (oh, acne) I sure hope not.
Hannah: Is agnus a disease?

At least she can help me laugh about it!

PBAA volunteer of the year 10/30/08

I get to brag about my husband for a minute. One thing many people don't know is how much volunteer work he does. He likes to do it without praise, so I won't brag too much, but this week he was given the PBAA volunteer of the year award. This is the organization who puts on things like The Tour De Tucson. He has about 50 service hours to this organization alone this year. I'm so proud of you Justin!

Humpty Dumpty

Last night we were watching The biggest Loser. This is the conversation that came out of it.

Hannah: Why is it bad that they are big?

Justin and I look at eachother and smile thinking this is a great opportunity to talk about the importance of exercise and eating right. So, we talk about how it does not make them bad people. We talk about how eating right and exercising can make us healthy and when we are healthy we can do more things. We continue with how being in good shape helps us be able to do things easier. We gave some examples of walking, riding bikes, doing cartwheels etc.

Hannah: And, big people cannot sit on walls.

Us: What? Of course, we are curious so we ask why.

Hannah: Because, Humpty Dumpty was big and he fell off the wall, remember?

That was the end of the "health" discussion as Justin and I were both laughing too hard to continue. I just wish we could see what goes on in their little heads.

11 years!

Today is our 11-year wedding anniversary. Wow, the time sure has gone by fast. It has been 11 years of happiness, sadness, laughter, frustration, perfect harmony, miscommunication, but... always love! Today was a really nice day. Cherece kept our kids for us. We went down town and ate at Justin's favorite restaurant, Cafe Poca Cosa. I had some really yummy carne asada, and the almond-crusted cheesecake just melted in my mouth! We then went and did a little early Christmas shopping and came home to end the night watching BSU vs. San Jose State (its half time). A perfect night...if BSU wins.

And many more years to come!

Grandpa Reid

I have been very blessed in my life to have grandparents around for a very long time. My Great Grandparents on my mom's side were alive until I was in high school. I use to go to their house every day after school in junior high to hang out until basketball practice. My Grandpa on my Dad's side was alive until just a couple years ago and was able to be there to help all three of my children be blessed. My Mom's parents are both still alive and have spent the last three Thanksgivings at my house since they winter in Yuma. It has been such a blessing to see my kids get to know them. Well, today I am a little sad. Grandpa was diagnosed with lung cancer last year and had part of his lung removed. A couple months ago, they found more cancer and told him at his age they would not recommend another surgery or chemo as they could both kill him. When grandpa asked what the doctor would do if it were him, the doctor told him he would play horseshoes. Grandpa is a national champion horseshoe pitcher. I talked to my Mom last night and she said Grandpa had some really bad episodes and they think he has had a couple strokes. He spent a couple days in the hospital. My aunt drove to Yuma yesterday to bring both him and Grandma back to Idaho so their doctors are closer. As Thanksgiving is just around the corner, I am sad thinking they probably will not make it this year. Times like these are when I really wish I lived closer to family. I have such great friends here in Tucson and people I consider my family, but I sure miss my "biological" family. Anyway, to end on a brighter note. Four things I love about my Grandpa.

1. His sense of humor. He is the best "big fish" story teller there is. It's really hard to know what to believe when he talks.

2. His bad language. I know I should not love this, but it just cracks me up. He has gotten a lot tamer with age.

3. His ability to make you feel special. I have always been "Grandpa's Girl" I know every girl in the family is also this, but I never feel like I am sharing the title. I only remember one time when I was not. Grandpa loves long hair. I always had hair down to the middle of my back. When I was a senior in high school, I cut it to my shoulders. The first time he saw me, he came up and said, "I thought you were my girl" as he shook his head. I just laughed.

4. His example he sets for all who know him about how to be a hard worker and a good, trustworthy friend.

Big Brothers, augh!

This is the conversation I just had.

Isaac: Mom, I ate glue.

Me: Why?

Isaac: Nathan told me it was not poisonous.

Well, as long as Nathan said it wasn't poisonous!

Under 3!

I didn't think I would see this for quite some time, but I just filled up my gas tank for under $3 a gallon. Yeah!! With my Fry's card, it was $2.84. I sure hope it continues to go down and stays down. Now, if only the temperature would stay under 90 and above 75, I would be a very happy girl!

A prayer for Dad

I love watching my kids testimonies grow. Saturday, Justin was riding in a bike race in Douglas, The Cochise County Cycling Classic. Justin had gone down the night before, and we woke up to rain. It was a cooler morning and windy too. I just new that Justin would probably get rained on the whole ride. As the kids and I drove to Tucson to Hannah's volleyball game, I had mentioned that I sure hope the rain passes over Dad. About 15 minutes later, out of the blue, Isaac says "Mom, I said a prayer for Dad". I asked him why and he replied that he prayed that dad would not get rained on. I told him that was really nice of him to do that for Dad. Well, when Justin got home that afternoon and we sat down to eat, Isaac's first question was "Dad, did it rain on you?" Justin told him no, that he did not see any rain at all. Isaac's face lit up and he smiled so big. I just new that he new it was because of his prayer.

Saturday afternoon, Isaac crashed out. I love to watch him when he is sleeping. He looks so sweet. But..how can my baby be so big!

Justin had a good race. It was really windy, but he was able to finish and feel good about it.
I'm so proud of him!
