Circles of Women

While in NC I was so lucky to be in the community of several wonderful circles of women. What we do, say, investigate, and value is of specific value to who we are as people who are female. I was really wondering how I would find and create anew such circles in this foreign place and in the academic world. Well, the circle was here waiting for me. The department leadership is itself a welcoming and robust circle of women who understand their role just so. I am so lucky again and again, to find and magnetize these wonderful relationships. During my first day of classes I wrote this poem to recognize my circles in NC and to celebrate all of us.

A circle

of women unbroken

A flutter of wings.

Cerridwen chases

curious minds,

transforms our perceptions our bodies

along a migration

towards relevance among the fey towards dragons

visibility is ours
we see

independence
within our unique cooperation.

Open new

lenses new

views.

Ahhhh The view from here is stunning.

Much Love,

Grantchester Meadows

Cambridge is a medieval city. It is composed of many winding streets that have no need for intersecting one another. There are many alleyways and footpaths snaking in and around the streets, and it is actually faster cycling because of this. The path we take to school is called snaky path and it is just wide enough for two people to pass. Outside the city are many smaller villages. Some have just two streets in the whole village and others have managed to get their own shops and centers around the main street with branches of residences coming off of it. Grantchester village is to the south of Cambridge and has two pubs, one tea house, a church, and a post office. What Grantchester is know for, however, is its meadows. The cam river winds through the large expanse of meadow, old trees dot the bank, and lovers and families grace the hillsides. We had a sunny weekend, and so everyone came out to the meadow. For three hours we basked in the sun, watched the punt boats go by, followed a wild swan down river, picked blackberries, and had a picnic. It was the most idyllic scene I have ever been a part of, and I am in love! Grantchester has been home to many celebrities including Vrigina Wolffe, AA Milne, and David Gilmour. The tea house is often visited by the rich and famous. And now I know why, it is a piece of heaven.
All my love,

A bowl of Cherries

Hello again,

Today is September 11th, a day when we remember the worlds' desire to transition from a place of war to a place of peace. The autumn equniox is 11 days away and there are many many groups organzing events to heighten our inner awareness of peace and love. Today is a national day of prayer in the United States. This Saturday people from many countries around the globe will dance for peace, stopping to join in a universal prayer at 4pm Pacific Standard Time/12 midnight Greenwich Mean Time/7pm Eastern Time and to sing a universal ohm. The United Nations has marked Sep 21st as the international day of peace. On the equinox, many will begin the slow walk toward winter and inner contemplation. This is a powerful time for me and I am thrilled to share it with the rising conciousness of so many on the planet! It reminds me that my cock-eyed optimism in the face of a dualistic and confused world serves me quite well. For you, for me, there in enough. Enough love, nourishment, peace, and willpower to create a world of cooperation. In the depths of our grief, our cold days, the struggle of our human condition, we are lifted up as if on the wings of the phoenix. The Earth is born again. Join me in wonder at the love and peace streaming in from the heavens, up from below, and out of our very own hearts.

Much Happiness!

Conkers

Hello~
While it is still sunny and hot where most of you live, it is rainy and the cold winds are blowing here in Cambridge. On the first day of September autumn dutifully flounced into the region, diplaying her gorious colors and whispers. In the autumn here the skies become a deeper shade of indigo at night, the starts twinkle with more brillance, the rain begins to fall sideways, and the temperature drops by several degrees. As we are without a car these two years, we have had to outfit ourselves in both rain pants as well as rain coats and boots. It is very possible to bike around in this, and most of the English are not even wearing coats or hats yet... Our blessings continue. We were given a tandem bike attachment from a neighbor further down the street, and this has cut off the time it takes to get to school by 10 minutes, horray! We had a wonderful barbecque with Kevins lab on one of the last warm evenings. Nearly half of my required texts for school were at the Cambridge Library for me to borrow. And, I recieved a modest scholarship for my studies at Roehampton. We have been having fun with language, and I will take few lines to deliniate some of the funny differences. Raincoat=Mac Toilet=Lou Thank You=Cheers Brilliant=Good Plimsole=Sneaker Boots=Cleats Cooker=Oven Lunch=Dinner Courgette=Squash Squash=Koolaide Chestnut=Conker My kids school bags were full of conkers the other day, and no amount of reasoning on my part could convince them they were actually chestnuts. :) Peace and Love,
