Don't take Me Downtown.

Last night we loaded the car and drove to Grandma Visser's house to drop of Hayden. He is going to spend the night and play there while I work today.
Anyway, when we were about half way there, Hayden asked if we are there yet? I said, "No. We have to get on the highway and that will take us to Grandma's." Hayden then said, "NO! That will take me downtown."
I was very confused by this statement but I am often confused by stuff that Hayden says. Then I look over at Jeff and he is grinning away. Jeff then says, "You know what that is from, don't you? The Incredibles."
The Incredibles has been Hayden's movie of choice lately. He call it the "superhero movie." The scene that he is quoting, for those who don't know that movie, is towards the end when they return back to the city to fight the robot and Bob aka Mr Incredible asks how to get to the financial district and Helen, his wife, says to take Tractor street and Bob responds by saying, "No that will take me downtown."

New Foods

Yesterday, I thought that I would be fun to try some a new food with the babies. I am really excited about having them enter the next stage of food because I am going to make all my own baby food. A cousin of mine does it and she has really inspired me. I have also done some reading and found some cool recipes to try. You see, I love to cook! I feel that it is one thing that you can do for your family to let them know how much you love them. I also enjoy eating food, probley more than I should. I think that there is nothing better then tasting the first bite of a delicious new recipe.
Anyway, yesterday afternoon I made my first batch of baby food; carrots. I was going to wait until after the holidays to begin adding solid foods in to their diet but I was so excited I couldn't wait. I decided that the must try this new food now. The babies on the other hand had a different idea.
I decided to start with Quinn, who loves to eat food from a spoon. So when he took the first couple of bites with excitement, I felt very encouraged and moved on to the next kid; Jake.
I gave Jake his first bite of carrots and he took it but looked at me with this expression that said what in the world is this? He took the second bite but when I offered him the third the shut his mouth so tightly that I could not get the spoon in. Now remember, this is the kid that is almost 20lbs. So far, he hasn't met any type of food he won't eat. I guess I found the first food he doesn't like.
So then I moved on to Claire. I gave her the first bite and she ate but with much distaste and protesting. I then tried another bite. She pushed most of it out with her tongue and got so upset that she threw-up all over the place. Point taken, you don't like carrots.
I then went back to Quinn, who I thought would take more because he did so well. He too completely refused any more. He must have decided that this was not good food from the protesting of the other two.
Needless, to say their first taste of my lovely home-made baby food did not go as awesomely as I had hoped. I guess I will just have to try again later, maybe after the holidays as I had orginally intended.

Reflections

The other day, I was talking to one of my co-workers and she asked how old the babies were now. With out a second thought, I said almost 6 months. Her next comment was, "Wow, you made it a half a year." Until she said that, I really had not thought about it but now, holy cow, we survived the first 6 months!
I really can't believe that the babies are all ready 6 months old. I can't believe how fast time goes by. Aside from the fact that I have no memory of the first 3 months of their lives besides a lot of crying (from both me and the babies), it has gone pretty well. I can't imagen life without the babies. I don't know what I would do with all my free time.
The babies just had their 6 month check up and our doctor is pleased and amazed at how well everyone is doing. They are right on tract with everything developmentally. They do all the stuff any 6 month old baby would do; sit-up, roll over, play with their toes (especially Quinn), babble, laugh out loud, smile, respond to their name and so on.
They are now all on the charts for growth and height, although Claire is just on but she is just going to be a small kid.
There are the latest numbers;
Quinn: 15lbs 11oz and 26.75 inches long
Jake: 18lbs 12oz and 26.5 inches long
Claire: 13lbs 13oz and 24 inches long.
There is just so much to be thankful for this Holiday season, I don't know where to begin. What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, I was struggling with the fact that I was pregnant with triplets and how would I be able to handle it. And now they are here and we wouldn't have life any other way. Praise God!

Sibling Love

I guess we can say that Hayden has come to love and enjoy his new siblings. The other night before he went to bed he had give all the babies a kiss good night. It was the cutest thing that I ever saw. He went around to each baby and ever so carefully held their heads and gave them a kiss. It was neat to see each baby look up at him and give him a smile as he kissed them.
I realize that I need to remember these moments. I am sure that all to soon Hayden will be screaming that the babies are getting into his toys and they won't leave him alone.

Sleeping Late

This morning I was laying in bed, enjoying the fact that Hayden slept in (you must know that this means he got up at 6:45am instead of 6:30am). When Hayden did get up, Jeff put on the usual cartoons on for him and I went back to bed. The babies were quietly sleeping and I was thinking that I would get maybe another 20 or 30 minutes of sleep. I know that this doesn't seem like a long time but in my world its huge.
I was just about to drift back to sleep when the bathroom light turns on and I hear the water running. I thought, ok Hayden is playing with water and I have about 10 minutes before it becomes a mess and I need to stop him. Much to my dislike, I hear "Mommy come quick, I need your help! Mommy, come here now!"
So I get out of bed, slowly thinking Hayden is just being overly dramatic again, and walk into the bathroom. What I find just about makes me cry. I found a little boy covered reddish brown stuff; face, hands, clothes, and everything he just touched. He states, "I can't get it off."
I have no idea what this is. At first I thought it was chocolate but it did not come off with water. So I walk out to the living room and find my lip gloss. Then I know, Hayden put my lip gloss all over his face but wait the cover is still on and the stuff on his face is not shinny. I then look at my purse. It too is covered in the reddish brown stuff. It hits me, my favorite lip stick. Needless to say, I was now up and I spent the better half of the next 30 minutes trying to clean up. Thank goodness for my automatic coffee maker.
I guess thats what I get for trying to squeeze in a couple more minutes of sleep and for not hanging my purse on the hook. Also, for all those other moms out there, soap and water removes lip stick from a leather purse and a little boy (with lots of elbow grease).

Long Wiikend

I realize the title's already been done, but you try to come up with an original pun on 'Wii'.

This was mentioned in Jen's last post, but "Over the weekend, Jeff got a Wii" does not illustrate the enormity of this victory. The Wii is extremely hard to find. It has been out for over a year and Nintendo is still having a hard time keeping up with demand, such that game stores in Grand Rapids have customers standing around in them, waiting for the truck to come in the hopes that today's shipment will include some Wiis. Wiis are selling on EBay for about $370 with shipping -- approximately $100 profit for the seller. So here's what went down:

Jen and I were packing the kids into the van for the ride back from Fort Wayne when I got a call from Lisa (Jen's sister), who was at Target. She had found a toy that had been discussed for Hayden and wanted to know if she should pick it up for us. She and Jen talked a little, then I said to check if they had any Wiis in stock. Jen hung up and I figured that at 8:30 on Black Friday, there was no way they would have any in stock. A few minutes later, Lisa calls back and says that while they didn't have any in stock, the clerk she asked said that someone had just returned one.

Hang on. This is like having the Wonka Bar with the last Golden Ticket in your hand and deciding, "You know what? I don't want to go on a magical journey and have all my dreams fulfilled. I want my dollar back." To me, the above decision is unfathomable. Even if you don't want it, why return it to the store when you can sell it on EBay for at least $100 profit? All I can think is that someone got one and didn't know what they had. Oh, and this signifies by divine providence that I, Jeff, was always destined to wield a Wiimote.

So Lisa purchased the Wii and safely transported it home. (She was warned by Target personnel to keep it double-bagged so she didn't get mugged.) I went over the next day to pick it up and we now have a Wii. Our software library is lacking -- the only game of note is Guitar Hero III (my band is named Doppler FX and I am quickly becoming a rock God), but I don't have a lot of time for gameplay and Hayden is still a little young to "get it".

I won't bore you with yet another gushing review of the device. I will simply state the following: Nintendo are craftsmen. They put a lot of thought and love into their consoles and this console is ridiculously cool. Interacting with the device via the Wii remote is one of the most intuitive experiences I have ever had. I want this interface for all of my A/V components -- TV, Stereo, DVR, etc. While remotes with hard buttons are quicker, any of these devices could benefit from a pointable and clickable on-screen display.

The Blame Game

And so it begins. Over the weekend, Jeff got a Wii. This morning after Jeff came down from feeding the babies, the Wii was turned on. Jeff asked Hayden if he turned it on? Hayden said, "No I didn't. Claire did." How quickly they learn. I thought he would at least wait until the babies were at least mobile to blame things on them. I guess he is just testing the waters.

On the Road Again

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope that everyone had their fill of turkey, family and shopping. We had a very fun and busy weekend. On Thanksgiving day, we had all of our family at our house. It was really good to be together with everyone and yes, I cooked. Because there has been a lot going on this past week, I thought it would be nice for everyone to come over for a home cooked meal. So with Jeff's help (he was the sous chef), I was able to make a turkey with all the fixin's.
The very next day, we took the babies on their very first road trip. We went to Ft Wayne, IN to visit Jeff's extended family. The trip went amazingly well. For once we did not have three screaming babies. They seemed to actually enjoy the car ride. The only major issue was when Jake threw up all over the McDonald's play land.
All the kids enjoyed playing at Aunt Sharon's house and visiting with all the new people. Jake showed everyone his new trick of sitting up on his own. When we put Hayden in the car to go home, he said, "I sad. The sun is gone. I sad when the sun is gone. I don't want to go home." But within five minutes of this statement, he was sound a sleep. I think that summed up the trip. It was good to go see everyone again and we had a great time but it seemed like the trip was over much to quickly. Although, for as much stuff as we packed, you would have thought we were staying for a week.

My oh my

There has been a lot going on in our household and many times, I have wanted to make a posting but I have not found the time. So today, I am going to make a marathon post to get everyone caught up.
Lets start with Halloween. We had fun. Hayden had the most because this year he really got the concept of trick or treating. He was blown away by the fact that he could go to a house and they would give him candy. Jeff said that at the first few houses, when people offered him the bowl, he would take a handle full. We also had a visit from the "exorcist baby". Ask my Dad (Leon) for the full story. He tells it best.
Over the next weekend, Jeff and I got away on a trip to Las Vegas. We stayed with our good friends, Wendi and Sean. We were gone for four days. It was the perfect trip, just enough time to start missing the kids. It was so nice to be away. We threw the schedule out the window and ate when we were hungry and slept when we were tired. Thank you to everyone who helped make our trip possible. I meant more to us than you will ever know.
We are surviving the babies first major cold. Last weekend, they all caught a cold. Everyone seems to be on the up and up now but there were some times when I did not know it we would get there. It is hard to see all my kids so miserable but they all have a very funny cry. They all sound like little seals and when ever they get up set it sounds like this; cry, bark, cough cry, bark, cough, puke.
I will be traveling again today but on a sad note. This week my grandma died. She was in poor health but it was still very sudden. She is my mom's mom and I am her name sake. Her birthday was Oct 14th and I was born on Oct 15th. I will be going to Iowa to join all my family to celebrate her life.
Well, I think thats about it. I can't believe that Thanksgiving is next week. We will be taking our first long (about 6 hours round trip) road trip with all the kids. I am sure that that adventure will result in a good posting. I wish everyone a Blessed Thanksgiving. I know that we have a lot to give thanks for.

Growing and Growing and Growing

Yesterday we had the pleasure of take all four of our kids to the doctor. It went pretty well expect for when all four were screaming after their shots; that was pleasant and loud. I think we might have scared all the other kids in the office. I guess it was a good thing that we were the last appointment of the day. Oh and in case you were wondering a doctors appointment for one 3 year old and three 4 month olds takes over 2 hours. (Needless to say Jeff and I were exhausted at the end)
There are the latest measurements;
Hayden 38 lbs and 35 inches long
Quinn 13lbs 5 oz and 25 inches long
Jake 15lbs 13oz and 24.5 inches long
and last but not least Claire 11lbs 10 oz and 23 inches long.
As they say in the movies; "Thats all for now."

A Game of Tag

Last week, my friend Lindsay tagged me. So what follows is my responce and she is right it is not as easy as it looks.
What you are suppose to do it state a word that discribes you for every letter of your middle name. Then you "tag" one person for each letter and they must do the same. I think my middle name is especially challenging, so here it goes.

S- silly. I love to laugh and be silly with my kids and husband
U- uplifted. This is how I feel after I spend time in prayer and worship
Z- zebra. I can't think of any thing else. I guess it describs me because I like the colors
A- all together. I love it when my whole family comes together, grandmas, grandpas, sisters, brothers, cousins, moms, dads, etc.
N- nurse. This is my profession and I love and enjoy it.
N- naughty and nice. I am not saying any thing more than that ;)
E-example. I try to live by example.

There is it. The people I tag are Rena, Gwen (aka Wendi), Lisa, Jeff, Leon, Sally, and Loretta. If you don't have a blog, write your response in my comment section. I look forward to reading all your responses.

Rolly Polly

We now have all three babies rolling over. I am glad that they have reached this mile stone but it is not fun. You see the babies like to sleep on their tummies and now since they can roll from tummy to back, they like to role around when they are suppose to be sleeping. They then get mad because they don't like to sleep in their backs. Claire played this game for about 40 minutes yesterday when she was suppose to be sleeping. She was quite proud of herself.

Happy Birthday

Happy 3rd Birthday, Hayden!

Dear Hayden,
Three years ago today, Daddy and I were in the hospital waiting for you to be born. We were so excited to meet you. I wanted to see who that person was who constantly had the hiccups and always seemed to climb under my rib cage.
There are not words to describe how I felt when I saw you for the first time, think the tears of joy I cried said enough. Then when I held you in my arms for the first time, I knew that I never wanted to put you down. I used to rock you to sleep every night and sing to you want ever song came into my head (some times it was Christmas carols and other times it was show tunes).
I can't believe how big you are now. I can't believe how fast time has gone by. It is hard for me to believe that you are no longer my baby but a happy, healthy little boy.
I know that this past year has been full of weird things. The biggest being that you are not the only child any more. There are now 3 babies that live in our house. I know that Mommy is sometimes busy and can't play with you as much. I want you to know that I am doing my best. Soon the babies will be older and not need Mommy as much. You will then always have someone to play with.
I am so proud of you. You are such a special little boy. You bring me more joy and laughter than you will ever know. You have this way of bringing back my sanity when I think it is lost. You make me laugh when sometimes all I want to do is cry. I can't wait to see what kind of man you will grow into. Although if you could slow that growing down alittle bit, I would really be greatful.
~Mommy

Fingernails, Toenails, Oh my...

Having 4 kids under the age of 3 puts a lot of things into perspective and causes me to stop and think about some strange things.
One thing that I was never told about was how many fingernails and toenails there are to cut on an almost weekly basis. I have to keep 4 sets of fingernails trimmed and 4 sets of toenails short. That equals 80 nails to cut on 4 squirmy kids. With all those nails to cut, it amazes me that I don't damage more fingers than I do (I usually will make one finger on one kid bleed). This total of nails does not include my own. And in case you were all wondering, Jeff is on his own. I don't touch his mutant toes.

Something's Funny

We have a very funny house, just ask our kids. Quinn seems to laugh every time Claire cries. Especially when he is getting a bottle and she has to wait.
Jake had his first bath in the big tub last night. He and big brother Hayden had a great time playing together. Jake thought that Hayden was the funniest thing that he ever saw. Jake basically laughed the whole bath.
Hayden loves to laugh. He is know to run through the house asking to be tickled. He also will be playing and just start laughing. He then comes up to me and asks, "Isn't that funny, mom?" (I usually have no idea what he is talking about.)
Daddy makes up silly songs that he will sing to the babies that make me laugh. They are often so funny that I shake the baby that I am holding which results in a dirty look from that baby.
Claire has yet to find anything funny but she does smile at very everything. Her trick is that she is the loudest talker. She wants to make sure that what she has to say is heard loud and clear. (Trust me, in this house she has too.)

Is is ever too early to be worried about one's health?

This morning after I came down from feeding the babies, Hayden asked me if he could have some raisins for snack. So with out a second thought, I said yes. What mom wouldn't when your kid asks for a healthy snack instead of cookies or candy. So I went to the pantry and came back with some raisins. When I gave Hayden is box he said, "Thanks, mom. I need these for my heart and my bones. Raisins make me strong." Wow! I don't know what we did to get such a healthy eater but I wish I knew so that I could do it with the triplets too.

Time flies when your having fun or really busy

I can't believe how quickly time has gone by. Summer is over and fall is now upon us. Next week the babies will be 3 months old and I will be going back to work. Next month, Hayden will be three years old. I guess time really does fly when you are having fun or at the very least it flies when you have 4 kids.
The babies are all growing up so fast. They are all smiling now and everyone coos/talks. Claire a typical girl, she has a lot to say and loves to "talk" to anyone who will listen. Jake loves to talk to his "friend" in the mirror and Quinn has a lot to say in the mornings. He sits in his bouncy seat and tells me all about this night while I feed his siblings. Jake has also learned a fun new trick. He can now role over. He is very proud of himself and usually has a big grin on his face when he turns from his tummy to his back.
The babies are not only developing nicely they are all getting very chubby, especially Jake with his three chins. Here are their latest weights.
Quinn 11 lbs, 1 oz, 23 inches long
Jake 13 lbs, 3 oz, 23 inches long
Claire 9 lbs 10 oz, 21.25 inches long.
For the most part things are going well but it can be real challenge at times. Recently, we have begun to experience the lovely fussy time from 6pm to about 10pm when the last kid finally settles down. I find peace in the fact that this stage will pass. Hopefully it will pass sooner than laster.
Please remember us in your prayers. We need all the help we can get :)

A Parrot in the House

Lately, Jeff and I have the pleasure of living with a little parrot named Hayden. This parrot treats us with a constant reminder of what we sound like. For example, when Jeff and I are feeding the babies, I will sometimes tell Jeff how to do things (I can't help it. I'm a mom). Jeff will role his eyes and jokingly say, "Just feed your baby." The other day I was feeding a baby and I asked Hayden if I could have one of his fruit snacks. He looked up at me and said, "Mama, just feed your baby." Nice.
I am updating this post because this story fits perfectly with the title.
The other day Hayden asked if he could get a snack. I told him yes, so he went into the pantry to pick something. After he was in there for a little while Jeff and I hear this; "I need some help, damn it. I can't get it open, damn it. Please help me." I wonder where he picked that up from. I am now going to send in my application for mother of the year.

Happy Anniversary

Last week Friday, August 24th, was our 5th wedding anniversary. Five years ago on a Saturday afternoon, I married the man of mine dreams. Over the past 10 years (married for 5), my love for this man has grown and matured. Just when I think that I can't love him any more, something happens that makes me fall in love with him all over again. Like when he is sitting on the couch cuddling one of our kids or how he still makes me feel like a young and sexy women (even though I have had triplets). Life has had taken us on a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs but I would have to say mostly ups. I can't think of a better person to go on this ride with. He is my partner and I know that together, we can face anything.
I want to say Happy 5th Anniversary to my husband and I hope that we have many, many more. Also I want to thank our parents for the awesome gift of a night out. It was so nice to have a dinner out where we could actually enjoy hot food and chew it before swallowing. I am so thankful for everyones love and support, there are not enough words to express it.

T-plus 2 months, 2 days

Yesterday, the triplets had their 2-month checkup with the pediatrician. Quinn's eating habits, Clan of the Cave Bear and Jacob's umbilical hernia were the topics of the day.

We left with nothing to be concerned about -- we're just battling reflux in varying degrees with all three babies, but other than that, everyone is healthy and doing exactly what they should be doing. Here's a quick rundown of their stats after 9 weeks:

Quinn: 9 lbs 14 oz, 21.5" long
Jacob: 11 lbs 5 oz, 21.5" long
Claire: 8 lbs 11 oz, 19.75" long

As a side note, the combined weight of the triplets is 29 lbs 14 oz, 3 oz shy of doubling their combined birth weight. According to our wildly inaccurate bathroom scale, Hayden weighs in at a hefty 32 lbs, so they've almost caught up with him, too. I think I'll start a pool concerning when my children outweigh me.

Out and About

I took the kids to the mall today for an outing and to meet my sister, Lisa. The goal was to get to the mall before the next feeding. Of course the feeding before I left was not a good one and I knew that the babies would be hungry earlier then their scheduled 3 hour eating time.

We got into the car and wouldn't you know it, Quinn started screaming. I knew he was hungry but there was nothing I could do expect drive. I was hoping that the car ride would sooth him back to sleep.

This did not work.

He began to cry harder and louder.

Hayden being the closest to the crying baby starts to say, "I know, I know, baby Quinn. I'm working on it. I'm working on it." Then he says, "Quiet down, baby Quinn. Food will come soon." (Now I know what I sound like.)

Later after Quinn was fed and quiet, Hayden runs up to me and says, "Good job, mama! Give me high five! You did it."

Thank God for Hayden! Because just when I think that I am going to explode from all the stress he finds some way to make me laugh and reminds me how lucky I really am.

Question

I have a question. Why is it that all three triplets are never sleeping at the same time? Is this one of those impossible things like finding a needle in a haystack? It is so frustrating to me that one of the kids will be sleeping and the other two crying or two sleeping and one crying or one will be almost asleep and loose the pacifier and wake up (you get the idea). Hardly ever are all three peacefully sleeping at once.
I have also recently learned that it is not possible for a 2 year old and 4 week old triplets to all take a nap at once. Well, I guess I should not say impossible because it does happen for a blissful 20 minutes before some one needs something. 20 minutes does not seem like a long time but you would be surprised what you can get done. I can eat lunch, go to the bathroom (by myself) and close my eyes for a quick (really quick) cat nap.

The 7th Harry Potter book is coming today. I only hope that Jeff and I can read it before they make it into a move.

Housekeeping

Strangely, this post is about the web log itself, rather than our family. If you look on the right-hand side of the page, you'll see a pair of new links.

The first links to our online photo album. I spent some time over the last few weeks rewriting and repopulating the site. The new structure allows much greater flexibility in the organization of pictures, and it will be the best place to get new pictures in the future. We'll try to post pictures on the web log, but they'll definitely make it to the album first. The only caveat is that the whole thing is running from a server in our basement and we don't have the best upload speed in the world, so be gentle.

The second link is to a web log maintained by our friends the Harts. They had almost exactly the same situation about three years ago and have been kind enough to share a lot of equipment and advice. Look to their site for a good example of a couple who managed to make triplets and a 2-year-old work while retaining their sanity.

Yes Sir, Yes Sir, Three Cribs Full

Quinn came home to join his siblings last night, so we're now one big, happy family. It's nice to be freed from the logistical nightmare that is having your children in two different places. We only did it for 3 days and I extend my sympathy and admiration to those parents who have to do it longer. All in all, we were extremely lucky in terms of everything hospital-related. We managed to get everyone out in a little over a fortnight and it's not uncommon to hear about children staying in Neo for triple-digit days.

Getting all three of them together and unencumbered by electrodes and feeding tubes has given Jen and I a chance to learn a little more about their personalities. Here are my thoughts after less than 24 hours with the three of them:

I think of Quinn as "The Professor." From Day 1, he's been the most curious about his surroundings and it's very common to see him with his eyes wide open, studying the world.

Jacob is definitely the gentle giant ("giant" being extremely relative here.) He's the biggest of the bunch and is extremely easygoing. He's like our own personal Buddha, although I haven't yet started rubbing his belly for luck.

Claire, on the other hand, is the drama queen. She is always the first one to start getting hungry (she takes less than the boys so I would expect her to be running on empty sooner), and she certainly lets us know. Her brothers don't seem to be bothered by her pre-meal howling, so we're thankful for that.

Now that everyone's home we can concentrate on preparation for Lance (Jen's brother) and Blair's wedding this weekend and possibly take some more pictures. Maybe we'll even have time for the obligatory "parent holding all those kids" shot.

Two's Company

Monday was a very exciting day in our house. We were able to take Jacob and Claire home from the hospital. Quinn has to stay a little longer to perfect his feeding skills. We are hopeful that he too will be home this week sometime.
Everyone is settling in and seems to be happy. Jeff and I are managing to get some sleep at night. Hayden has nicely settled into his new role as big brother. He is a great helper. He likes to give the babies their pacifiers when they cry and tells them that everything is alright.

Piccies

In order to combat accusations of favoritism, here's a picture of Hayden from our trip the beach on Saturday.

Now, lest we get bombarded with requests for more recent pictures of the triplets, here's a mug shot of everyone at 12 days old. From top to bottom are Quinn, Jacob and Claire.

Splish, Splash!

Last night, Jen and I left Hayden and his cousin with their poor grandmother and went down to the hospital for bath time with the kids. Everyone is in bassinets now and really woke up for their baths. It was nice to have them out in the open instead of cocooned in their blankets and such. It gave me a chance to really start thinking about what a miracle we have.

While I was there, I washed 30 toes and 30 fingers -- each one only a little thicker than a toothpick. I clothed 6 legs and 6 arms. I watched 3 completely different people wake up, eat and go back to sleep and I marveled at their perfection. Finally, I looked into 3 pairs of tiny eyes, saw the souls beneath them and knew that I loved them.

I know that our household has some rough times ahead, but I'll try to hang on to moments like these to get me through the rough patches.

On the business side of things, everyone is doing very well. As I mentioned, they are all in bassinets now so they're able to regulate their temperatures. Concerning their homecoming, we're really just waiting to figure out a good diet -- one that gives them enough calories without stuffing them too full of formula and causing regurgitation. Right now, Jake and Quinn seem to be taking turns being the spitty baby and we'll need to get that whole eating thing nailed down before they come home. We're hoping that one day a switch will flip and they'll start taking bottles well and keeping them down.

Home and not pregnant. Yeah!

I am now home. I was discharged from the hospital on Saturday. Things are going very well for me. Each day, I feel stronger and stronger. I have minimal pain and it is pretty easy for me to get around. I feel much smaller and I am very happy to be able to see my feet once again. I feel like a normal person again. I am no longer a baby incubator.
Quinn, Jake and Claire are still in the hospital. No word yet as to when they will be able to come home. They are all doing very well. Before they can come home, they must be able to consistently take their feedings from a bottle, be gaining weight and maintain their body temp. We go up to see them every day and hopefully in the next week or so we will be able to take them home. Please continue to keep them in your prayers so that we can have our whole family together. I can't wait for the day when I will have all my children home (no matter how busy or chaotic it will be).
I would like to end this post with another Haydenism. I was checking e-mail the other day when Hayden came and stood next to me at the computer. As soon as he reached the desk, he began to grunt and push like he was making a dirty diaper. So I asked him if he as going poopy and if he wanted to sit on the potty. As he always does, he told me no. I asked him if he was sure that he wasn't going poopy as he continued to push and grunt. And again, he told me no. I then asked him if he was a lair and he said, "No, I a boy." I thank God for Hayden, who always manages to make me laugh when I need it most.

And So it Begins

Well, what can I say? Jen and I had 3 beautiful babies a little after Noon on June 19th. The atmosphere in the OR was calm and the procedure went completely according to plan. Jen is recovering well from her surgery (she moved from the bed to the wheelchair and back twice tonight) and all of the kids are doing well. Pictured from top to bottom are Quinn Richard, Jacob Jay and Claire Suzanne. Here's some information for each of our new additions (sorry, Leon -- no batting averages or ERAs yet.)

Quinn was born at 12:13, weighing 5 pounds 2 ounces and measuring 18" long. He was having a little trouble breathing at first, so he taken to the NICU and was on CPAP (a very nonintrusive treatment that blows puffs of air into the nostrils to help the lungs stay inflated) for a few hours but is now breathing well on his own. If all goes well, he'll be joining his siblings in the morning. He was awake around 10:30 PM when Jen and I visited him so he looks like he's shaping up to be our night owl.

Jacob came at 12:14, weighing 5 pounds 12 ounces and measuring 19" long. Jake seems to be the more easy-going, calm one of the three. Perhaps he's just saving his energy. Or perhaps he'll be the big brooding behemoth of the group.

Claire came at 12:15. While she's our smallest at 4 pounds 3 ounces and 17" long, she's doing the best with breathing and eating. Her size isn't going to keep her down -- I'm pretty sure she'll make up for it with attitude. Of course, I believe she's getting the attitude directly from her mother.

Jen and I are immensely grateful for all of the words of encouragement, prayer, and other support you have all given us. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers for a little while yet (I'm thinking the next 20 years should just about do it.)

I can't express how thankful we are for our three healthy babies. Each one is truly a blessing by itself. To have all three of them together is nothing short of a miracle.

I am so proud of Jen I can't stop typing even though I'm drained. Her (mostly) positive attitude and willingness to put the babies first through this entire process has shown an inner strength that I don't think either of us knew existed. After over ten years together, she still finds ways to amaze me, and that's why I Love her (yes, I capitalize Love because I feel it deserves special treatment -- call me sentimental.)

Those of you familiar with the photo album at our home site can find more pictures there. Be warned, however -- I'm working (in my free time) on a more flexible method of categorizing images so things may look screwy from time to time.

Thanks again to all of you. As we learn more about these three little people, we'll do our best to keep you up to date.

Quick Update

We are rapidly approaching the date of the c-section which is June 19th. It was moved to Tuesday because of scheduling issues with the hospital. I had a growth ultrasound today and everything is great. The weight of the babies is as follows Jake 5 lbs 9 oz, Quinn 5 lbs 9 oz and Claire 4 lbs 6 oz. This is great news. I praise God and thank Him for His continued faithfulness. I ask for continued prayer for a safe delivery and uncomplicated surgery.

The end is in sight

I just wanted to post a quick update. I have been home now for about two weeks and things are going great. The babies are still healthy and growing. The next big growth ultrasound will be on June 11th. With the help of family, especially Lisa, I am able to get enough rest so my contractions are minimal.
I would have to say that I think that we are ready for the triplets. My mom and Lisa have done an excellent job of washing and organizing baby clothes, setting up the nursery, and cleaning every baby thing possible. The car seats are even in the van.
It is a good thing that we are ready because the date has been set. My c-section is scheduled for June 18th. I am so excited and very ready to not be pregnant. This has been a long journey with many ups and downs but as they say all good things must come to an end. And believe it or not, we are ready to begin the next phase of our journey. I can't wait to meet all the little people who have been kicking me for the past few months.

Good News

I just wanted to let everyone know that I am now at home. That is right, I was discharged. The doctors are very pleased with my progress and the progress of the babies. They really couldn't find a reason to keep me in the hospital. I am on bed rest here and I am set up with at home contraction monitoring. I will be going to see the doctor twice a week for check ups. Even though, it was scary to leave the hospital I am glad to now be home. I feel good and I know what I need to do to keep these babies inside for another couple of weeks. I am so close to my goal that I know with God's help I will make it.
Thanks again to everyone for all your love and support. I will still keep you all updated on how things are going. I hope that very soon, we will be announcing the birth of Jake, Quinn and Claire.

Remarkable

First, I want to thank every one for flooding heaven with prayers on behalf of the babies and me. Last week, I was kinda in a funk and crabby. I feel that I lost sight of the good things that are happening around me and what remarkable things the Lord has done for me.
First and foremost, the most remarkable thing that is I am carrying three healthy babies. Although at times it is not fun and can be very uncomfortable, it is still a great blessing. All three babies are doing so well and growing like weeds. Their weights are as follows; Jacob 3 lbs 12 oz, Quinn 4 lbs 1 oz and Claire 3 lbs. I have now passed Hayden's birth weight. He topped the scales at 10 lbs, 10 oz and I am now carrying 10lbs 13 oz of babies. There is only one words that can be said, remarkable.
The second thing that amazes me is all the love and support that I get from my family and friends. The fact that so many people are out there praying for me and my family. I truly can feel God's presence and support. Remarkable.
Last but certainly not the end, is the fact that I have been able to carry these babies for 30 weeks with the hopes of going to 34 weeks. I did not realize this significance until Jeff and I visited the Neonatal unit. Everyone we talked with, was so impressed and over joyed that I was 30 weeks. To me it just seemed like another number in my count down but after seeing those tiny babies, I now know how remarkable it is.
I am now going to try and enjoy the ride that this journey is taking me on. I have learned so many things about myself, my husband, my sister and many others. This ride will soon be over and I want to try and see all the remarkable things about it.

Reality Check

Well, today marks 30 weeks. I have made it to my first goal but for some reason I don't feel much like celebrating. I should be proud that I have made it half way through this journey. The truth is that I feel like I have climbed over the mountain only to see the next mountain. This new mountain looks bigger, scarier, and has more challenges. I don't know if I can make it.
In one of the devotional book that I have been reading, there is a line that reads, "Never give up. One prayer might not be enough..." It would just be so easy to give up. I don't know if I want to fight any more.
Physically, things are getting more and more difficult. Simple tasks, like getting up to the bathroom, showering and getting dressed take all the strength I can muster, not to mention balance which I am quickly loosing. The other day I sneezed, just a normal sneeze, and I pulled a muscle on the left side of my belly. From a sneeze, you have got to be kidding me.
Sleeping is now a big joke. It is not an easy task to turn from one side to the other. I wish that I had Jeff's talent of sleeping in the same spot all night but I don't. If I stay on one side for too long, it goes numb and tingly. I also get the pleasure of having to pee every couple of hours. I am convinced that the person who installed the toilets on this floor purposely put them lower then needed, just so us pregnant women would have to struggle to get down there. Don't get me started about trying to get back up. Each night, I pray for just 4 hours of sleep in a row, so far it has only happened once. Now that was a good day.
My abdomen is growing out of control. I have no belly button left. My skin is pulled so tightly that I think that some day it might just rip. I worry if it will ever go back to where it used to be. Unfortunately, I think it won't so if any one knows a good plastic surgeon, let me know.
The babies are quickly running out of room in there. I am well aware of this because they are constantly pushing on me trying to stretch out. I feel bad for Jacob (baby A). He is so low that in order to get a little relief from his siblings he tries to go even lower. Imagine this constant pressure in the lower pelvic region and you can guess why I am a little cranky. (Any one who has had a baby knows what I am talking about.)
The other major complaint is about food and eating. I hate eating and wish that I didn't have to. Even a small meals cause major fullness that will last for at least 2 hours. I am so sick of hospital food. I won't even start about the protein shakes that come twice a day. I am on these shakes because I am not gaining weight as I should and my doctors are convinced that I don't eat. I would kindly like to remind them that my stomach is squished to the size of a pancake. If they could make more room for my stomach then I would gladly eat everything I see.
Well, I hope that I didn't change anyone's mind about getting pregnant. Pregnancy is really cool, I just don't recommend going for triplets.
Sorry for all the complaints and crabbiness but sometimes a women just needs to vent, especially if that woman is pregnant with triplets. ;)

Haydenisms

I thought with Mother's Day right around the corner, I would write a little bit about Hayden. Even with life kinda focusing on the triplets, he is still a big part of everything we do. He is now 2 and will be 3 in October. I can't believe how big he is getting. He is now mister independent.
The other morning, Hayden woke up while Jeff was still in the shower. Hayden was apparently hungry because he went to the pantry got out some Chex Snack mix, a bowl from the drawer and poured himself some. He then went to the table and sat down to eat. When Jeff found him and asked what he was doing, Hayden said,"I have snack, Daddy." Like duh, I was hungry and you weren't there so I helped myself.
We think that Hayden has a pretty good idea of whats going on. We talk a lot about the babies and how he is going to be a big brother. He knows that there are three babies in mommy's tummy. He will now tell any one that will listen, "I a big brother. Two boys and one girl." The other night, he was up at the hospital with me and we were talking about the babies. He stops and sticks his tummy way out and tells me that he has babies in his tummy too. I asked him how many babies? He said, "Mama have three, Hayden have five and Daddy have six." I guess in his mind, we are going to have one heck of a family.
This next story is for all you guys out there. I have a bath tub in my room that Hayden loves because it has jets in it. So when he is here at night, we usually let him take a bath. He loves to have the jets running and bubbles in the tub. During this bath, I turned the jets off in preparation for the end of the bath. Hayden suddenly stands up and before I know it begins to pee. He doesn't stand still to do this. He is moving his hips all around, back and forth, up and down. Well this causes the bubbles to separate in the spot where he peed. After he is finished, he gets this big grin on his face and says, "Look mama, I make turtle." I guess Jeff doesn't have to worry about teaching him to write his name in the snow because Hayden will be making turtles.
Most of the time spent with Hayden is spent laughing but he is also the sweetest little boy I know (of course, I am a bit biased). There is nothing in the world like one of his hugs or as he calls them, "mommy squeezes." And of course, my heart just melts when he runs into my hospital room, jumps on the bed, looks me right in the eye and says, "Love you, mama."
Every once in a while he will still cuddle with his mama. He is getting bigger but I know that no matter how big he gets there will always be space in my arms for him. Its like that passage from a well known children's book says, "I'll like you for always. I'll love you forever. No matter how big you'll get by baby you'll be."
Happy Mother's Day!

Red and yellow, black and white...

One of the first things Hayden started learning was colors. I can recall many handfuls of minutes (for that is how we measure time with Hayden) spent quizzing the little guy on his colors. Perhaps his mastery of the palette is responsible for this post.

One day a few weeks ago, Hayden and I were out somewhere public (I think it was the mall) and he saw a group of people standing in the distance. Upon sighting them, he started pointing at them and saying, "Mickey". I didn't think much of it at the time, and the only thing I saw about them that was different from anyone else was that they were African American (and I was trying to figure out what that had to do with Mickey Mouse, other than the fact that most of his body is black).

Fast forward to last week when I'm picking up Hayden from daycare. It's pretty standard for him to go around and tell everyone goodbye. This time, he told one of his teachers, "Bye, Mickey." Apparently this is what the kids call her and she is of course African American. So a tiny Christmas light goes on in my head and on the way to the hospital, I quizzed him on the skin color of his teachers. It took him a while to figure out what color skin caucasians have (I think we decided on pink), but he came back almost immediately with brown for Mickey, so I'm pretty sure that's the connection.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to explain to Hayden that not everyone with a darker complexion than him is named Mickey. Were this not the case, a back-of-the envelope calculation suggests that about 99.9% of the world's population would be named Mickey. This figure excludes Iceland where it would probably be more like 50%. He takes after his daddy, and I'm about as white as they come.

Edit 05/11/2007 - I checked the roster this morning, and the teacher in question is Nikki. Hayden's Ms and Ns are a little tough to differentiate.

Update from Jen

Well, it is now hospital day 17. I am now 28 weeks and 4 days along. I am still hanging in there. Jeff and Hayden are doing really well. We have all slipped into this new routine. Hayden still comes to see me at least once a day. He likes to come up to the hospital and ride the elevator. He has memorized the path from the car to my room and can almost do it all by himself (of course, Daddy is always close by). Even though the visits can be short, I love the time that I get to spend with Hayden. We color together, do stickers (his favorite activity) and sometimes we watch movies together. I am so thankful to my family for giving me this time each and every day.
Monday was another ultrasound day. Everything is holding stable. There were no changes in my cervical length so that was an answer to prayers. The babies still look great. The next growth ultrasound will be on the 21st of May.
The babies are really active, especially our little girl. She keeps her brothers in line and gets everyone moving. She will start kicking and then it just goes around the belly. Sometimes it feels like they are having a dance party in there and I just happen to be the dance floor.
This truly is an amazing pregnancy and I am very blessed to experience it. I know which baby is which and where they are located. I can feel all their different movements. I am getting excited to meet them but I can wait a little longer.
Love to everyone.
~Jen
