Thanks

This post is dedicated to my favorite sister and my boy's favorite aunt, Bethy. Before anyone else gets up in arms hang on. Without her I wouldn't have been able to see another fabulous ob that was already full, and have gone full term in my pregnancy, been treated better than anyone else at the hospital, and have full confidence that my baby would be delivered safely. Plus a whole bunch of other things I won't mention specifically. So thanks, you made this the best pregnancy and delivery ever! You are a fantastic doctor and even better sister!

Denim

So I have a lot of funny stories from my labor experience. Well really I think this one is the best. Right before I was ready to push my ob asked if my husband and I had a name picked out. We told her we did and that it was Devin. She some how misheard us and said, "Denim, oh OK." We quickly corrected her but told her she did a great job keeping a straight face and not telling us it's the dumbest name she's ever heard. My doctor then told us that she's heard so many weird names while practicing Denim actually sounds pretty good. I still think Devin is better.

Inducing Labor

For those of you that don't know what it means to be induced into labor (Fernash) let me tell you how it goes. First you go up to the desk and say hey I'd like to have my baby today. Well really you say I am scheduled to be induced today and then sit in the waiting room for a while until they get your room ready. This process is much faster if your sister is the chief ob resident like mine! Then you get to the room and they start you on some drugs to get labor going. This goes on for a few hours, not minutes as once previously thought by Fernash. You then get an epidural if you have any sense at all and wait until you are fully dilated and push out the baby. Pushing can also take a while especially if you had only a 5 lb baby first and the second is 3 lbs bigger. My sister can testify to that considering she waited about 45 minutes until the head was ready to be delivered. Sorry I tried my best. Needless to say this is an all day process so the next time someone you know is being induced don't expect a call an hour after they go into the hospital. It doesn't usually work that way, at least not for me!

Baby Boy

Well he's here. I have a new little boy. Its taken a while but tough luck I'm tired and the only people that read this blog already know he's here but he deserves his own title. He was born at 3:13 pm weighing in at 8 lbs. 2 oz. and 21 in long. A very big kid. He's almost 2 weeks old now and probably weighs about 9 lbs now. At a week he had already gained 6 oz. (that's a lot considering he went at least 2 days without food). He is a very good baby, I had no idea babies could be like this. I thought they all came home with chords and alarms. This way is much easier.

Big day

Well tomorrow is the big day. I've given this baby plenty of chances to come on his own and now I'm letting my doctor take over. I thought that last night he had decided to come but alas after a few painful hours of contractions it turned out to be false labor. More false labor this morning as well. I don't think this kid is very decisive. Anyways, whether I'm ready or not he's coming tomorrow! It hasn't really set in yet but yikes; I"m going to have two kids! Wish me luck!

Oh so humble

So this Friday my husband went to a research convention up in Huntsville and won first prize for the research he did over the summer. So another prize to put on his resume when applying for residency. Way to go! That's not really why I'm writing. What really impresses me is that later that night he offered to sleep on the couch so I could have the whole bed to myself, because I've been sleeping very poorly lately. After telling him no and letting him come to bed I realized only a few minutes later that hey, I really do sleep better alone. So I asked him if the offer for him to sleep on the couch was still up and because he is so sweet he slept on the couch. What a champ. After winning research awards he is still humble enough to sleep on the couch for his pregnant wife. He definitely knows what's important! I really do have the best husband ever.

I Did It

I did it, I carried a baby to term. Go me! I am awesome! Now that I have accomplished this mighty feat I'd like to have my baby now. I know that's a bad attitude to have but I'm tired of picking things up with my feet because it hurts to bend over. I"m also tired of going to the bathroom every 5 minutes. And I'm really excited to have my baby. Since my husband nested for me I"m all ready for this little guy to come. However, he seems to be quite comfortable where he is even though I'm already 3 cm dilated. Granted I will miss being spoiled by my husband because he feels bad for me if only that would carry on after the baby comes. If only I could have it both ways. Not that I"m never spoiled but it certianly has been easier to be me lately.

A New Trick

Last night while my husband and I were getting our daughter ready for bed she discovered something. She can take off her pajama bottoms all by herself. The only problem is she can't get them back on. So she spent the better part of 10 minutes running around the apartment in her diaper and pajama top waving her pants in the air. She must have really been impressed with herself. Oh and after I showed her how to put them back on she insisted on pulling them up herself, and thus letting her back side hang out of her pants. There is never a dull moment with this child.

Way to Go!

I have to brag about my husband for just a second. Yesterday he won a research prize at his school for the research he did over the summer! He got a pretty blue ribbon and a plaque with his name on it and everything. He also gets a little bit of money which is nice seeing as we're in lots of debt for medical school and he impressed the head of the research department so much he offered my husband to spend a whole year doing research! Granted it would take an extra year to graduate, but it's still very flattering. I'm so proud. He's a pretty great guy and not only because he wins prizes.
My daughter has found her new favorite word, no. She says no to everything. I'll ask her for a hug, no. I'll ask her if I can do her hair, no. I'll ask her if she me to read to her, no. I'll ask her if she needs her diaper changed, no (this usually isn't true because I can smell her across the room). I'll ask her if she wants a treat, YES. At least I know she understands. Now the trick is getting her to say yes to more than just a treat. I don't think its going to happen anytime soon.

A Really Long Night

Two nights ago my daughter decided it would be lots of fun to get up 5 (yes 5) times in the middle of the night. Now I'm used to getting up several times a night to go to the bathroom. I have baby number two to thank for that, but its entirely different to be woken up to MAMA! MAMA! over and over again. After that I decided mine and her bedrooms are WAY too close together. This place needs thicker walls. Luckily for every ones well being she slept like a rock last night so I could as well. Granted that may have to more to do with the fact I took benedryl before bed.

This is funny

Yesterday morning I was asking my husband if he had showered yet. He didn't really smell or anything like that but he just looked like he needed a shower. Anyways, after I asked him I also asked our 20 month old daughter if he needed a shower. I kid you not these were her exact words, "Dada stinky." It was so funny. She's a lot smarter than we give her credit for or at least has a better sense of smell than we do.

Dress Up

Most little girls love to play dress up. My daughter and niece are no exception. Today they played dress up and had a blast. The only difference was that they weren't exactly wearing dresses. They dressed up in my old basketball uniform. The one thing I've learned over the past 19 months of having a child is you work with what you have. They don't seem to mind anyways.

Funny Sayings

I thought this was really funny.
Shawn: I don't curse, I swear!

I'm Stupid

So this last week I went to the doctor to get a checkup. Everything went great, it was even pretty quick the only problem was I went on the wrong day. I wasn't supposed to show up for another week. For some reason I had convinced myself that I had an appointment. When I heard the receptionist talking to someone saying that I didn't have one I even got out my little appointment card to show that I had one and then realized I was a week early. I haven't felt that stupid in a really long time. Luckily no one had shown up yet to see my doctor so she had no problem fitting me in. And she even made me feel better by telling me the time when she drove off with her mom with her keys on top of the car. She's nice. I know a lot of people say pregnancy is a beautiful thing but it sure does make you stupid!

My Fan Club

So recently I have decided that I should start a fan club for myself. Well really I think my daughter wants to start one for me. Lately she thinks I'm just the coolest person around. Every morning I get woken up to mama! mama! (its the same thing at nap time) Every time I go to the bathroom she stands at the door (unless she's barged in) and yells mama! mama! Every time I leave the room I hear mama! mama! And today I got absolutely nothing out of church because I had to sit in nursery with her the whole time so she wouldn't try and escape. I even tried sitting with her in my lap making her watch everyone else have fun around her. No she was just fine sitting in my lap the whole time. I had no idea I was so much fun to be around! It's very flattering but it would be nice if someone older than an 18 month old wanted to hang out with me.

Second Year is the BEST!

My husband started his second year of medical school this week and I must say this one is already WAY better than last year. For starters, he has hardly picked up his books this week. (For anyone that knows him this is a miracle) He also gets home around 1 in the afternoon as opposed to around 5 or 6 last year. I'm not even opposed to him studying tonight because we had such a fun day! Granted for most people going to Target and Randall's wouldn't seem like much fun but to me it is especially when my husband comes. And he set up the Internet and speakers on our home computer and is now getting dinner for us. I've got to say, I could get used to this.

My husband is GREAT!

So the seventh Harry Potter book came out a little over a week ago. I had decided to just wait for one of my friends to finish theirs so I wouldn't have to pay for my own, even though I really wanted one the day it came out. My fabulous husband thought it would be fun to surprise me and go ahead and get me my own copy the day it came out! So I got to read the book all that day and finally know what happens and I didn't even have to wait to borrow a copy! What a guy!

5 Reasons I don't miss my old apartment

5. I no longer have to walk a quarter mile to take out the trash.
4. Now with a little less space I will actually use my kitchen table.
3. No more lugging 2 25lb. babies up three flights of stairs.
2. We will save about $75 a month on utilities.
1. No more slime to slip on fall on my butt and drop my baby.
Bye, bye Camden I do not miss you!

I'd like to thank myself

... for being so productive today. During the girls naptime I made banana's foster chimichangas, canceled with our way too expesive electric provider, got a new cheaper electric provider, and got my daughter's health insurance application finished. Wow I am awsome. Actually most of those things took about 5 minutes each to do, but it still makes me feel good. It's amazing what can get done without any interruptions from babies!

Yummy ice cream

This morning my little girl cut her finger on something. It was bleeding pretty bad so I did what I could to stop the blood and cleaned it and put a bandage on it. She was still distraught and was having a hard time calming down so I decided to be nice and give her a bite of ice cream. However, my niece saw that someone other than herself was eating ice cream and decided she needed some as well. Thinking that she would only get some if she was hurt to so she pointed to her finger and started to whine. Babies are funny, and I have to say that was pretty smart.

Sometimes I Wonder...

about my parenting capabilities. Yesterday while my husband was changing my daughter's diaper he noticed a rash on her bottom and bites on her feet and hands. Being the wait and see kind of person I am I told him it was nothing and not to worry. I'll go away soon, and if it doesn't bother her it doesn't bother me. Well, he talked me into calling my mom to make sure it was nothing and guess what; she has hand, foot, and mouth. Gross. So much for my wait and see kind of thinking. On the bright side we really do just have to wait until it goes away so at least I was right about that. Oh and way to go daddy for being a good parent, I think between the two of us we'll do o.k.

RUN

I think it is so funny that when you tell a baby to come they run into a corner thinking that hopefully you won't be able to get them there. I just asked my niece for the brush and because she undoubtedly she did not want to give it to me she took off running and stopped in the corner of the kitchen. Good thinking, there is no way I'll find you there.

Baby Time

Yesterday while I was cleaning my bathrooms I realized how much more time it takes to clean anything in our apartment. I thought about it and wrote down a list of chores and how long it used to take me to finish them.
vacuum: before-5 min. now-10 min
sweep floor: before 2 min now-5 min
clean bathroom: before 20 min now-40 min
picking up anything off the floor: before-5 seconds now-30 min
Luckily I have discovered that if I pretend to let them help me they get distracted and I can carry on much faster. Its amazing what a paper towel can do to save me some time. On the downside I do have to worry about my daughter throwing it in the toilet or anything else for that matter. Despite how long it now takes now I never knew how funny it could be to clean a bathroom whether it is seeing a baby press their face against the shower door or seeing what kind of cleaning product she now thinks might taste good without mom knowing. One thing is for sure there is never a dull moment. If there is that's when you need to worry.

just the beginning

turn it up. you won't be sorry.
