Love

**After waking up at 2:00 a.m., not being able to get back to sleep, and then getting text from my mom at 3:00 that Grandpa was gone, I had a bit of a rough night.  It wasn't until I had composed my thoughts and memories that I was finally able to get back to sleep for a couple of hours.  You can see some of my favorite memories of my grandparents here and below are my thoughts on Grandpa.**

I’m ashamed to admit it, but it took Grandma dying, unexpectedly, three years ago for me to really appreciate my grandparents.  Grandparents are special.  They aren’t something that can be taken for granted because you never know when they won’t be there anymore.  Even though I never thought I was close to Grandma and Grandpa, I realized after Grandma died that they were a bigger part of my life than I realized.  I always knew they loved each of us, I just didn’t realize how much I loved them and how I would miss seeing and talking to them whenever I wanted.

After Grandma died, I promised myself I would do my best to cherish all the time I could with Grandpa before it was his turn to go.  Grandpa changed a little after Grandma died.  We got to see a softer, more spiritual side of him that I never knew existed.
Grandpa didn’t have a lot of great accomplishments in this life.  He didn’t have a PhD or run a successful business.  He didn’t live in a big house with lots of toys and Mercedes.  But he did have something that makes him special and something that is more important than any earthly treasure.  As I sat in the temple yesterday, I kept feeling drawn to Moroni chapter 7, in the Book of Mormon.  This chapter is one of my favorites and talks about faith, hope, and charity.  Vs. 43-48 really stood out to me.  They tell us that one must be meek and lowly in heart and that we must have charity.  This describes Grandpa to a “T” for me.  He was always doing something to help others.  He could fix just about anything and could most often be found in his workshop building something for one of us or fixing one of our cars.  All you had to do was ask and he was always willing.

Vs. 45 continues, “charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked…”  Grandpa was all of these things.  Grandpa never cared what other people thought.  Having a lot of money or an important social status didn’t matter to him.  He spent his time attending any event his grandkids were involved in, fishing or hunting with his sons or grandkids, or even just making us popcorn as we visited on Sunday nights.  This is truly a good life.
We are taught early in life, not to seek for earthly treasures, but to seek for treasures in Heaven.  Grandpa was able to do just this, by loving his family.  In General Conference in October, Elaine S. Dalton gave a talk called “Love Her Mother,” in which she tells us “The most important thing a father can do for his daughter is to love her mother.  By the way you love her mother, you will teach your daughter about tenderness, loyalty, respect, compassion, and devotion…”

Grandpa truly loved Grandma.  I don’t remember him ever saying anything unkind to her or about her.  She was his companion and he was devoted to their marriage.  He was so distraught when she died so unexpectedly.  We half expected him to follow her.  But, he was determined to stay a little longer.  I think he knew there were a few more lessons we needed from him first.  At a family party late this summer, he told us stories of when they were young and counseled us to never go to bed without a kiss goodnight.  In a sacred and personal experience, also late this summer, which I won’t go into detail about, he told me that Grandma has been around a lot since she died.  Sitting with him at night and being a source of comfort to him.
I know this is true, as she’s been a frequent presence in my home too, since Bailee was born.  She so loved holding our babies, I think she just couldn’t stay away.  What a righteous and faithful woman she must have been to have the opportunity to be a ministering angel on earth.  Now, I’m sure Grandpa will be right there by her side, watching over us, loving us, as they’ve always done.

Knowing the end was coming soon,  I made a special trip to Logan Monday night, just to visit Grandpa.  How glad I am that I did.  As hard as it has been to see him suffer through his leukemia the last six months and especially the last few weeks, I needed the closure.  He was laying in bed, frail and weak, but boy was he was full of it.  Story after story.  Each one ending with how much he loved us and what a great family we are.  Memories of Sunday visits, camping trips, Christmas parties, and family get-togethers.  By yesterday morning, he'd gone so downhill, we knew it wouldn't be long.  We wanted him to be at peace, but it is always hard to lose something so great.  Even though he is now gone, his legacy lives on.  He lived a full and good life.  He taught us by example and left us with the knowledge that he knows the Gospel is true, that Christ is real, and that love overpowers all.
How grateful I am for the knowledge of promise of eternal families.  We love you Grandpa Popcorn!

Birthday Girl

Bailee is 1!  My baby is growing up, so sad!  We had a small party for her on Thanksgiving with Matt's family and then on Saturday with my family.  She liked the attention of everyone singing to her and attempted to blow out her candle.  She didn't want to eat the cake though, just feed it to Grandma.
At 1 year:
  • Has 8 teeth
  • Loves to open cupboards and drawers and play in them
  • Plays in the toilet
  • Likes to help unload the dishes
  • Finally holding her own bottle... although she rarely drinks it.  Usually just in the morning when she wakes up
  • Still a mama's girl
  • Likes anything you feed her... except bananas, favorites are Cafe Rio and Pizza
  • 19 lbs. 5 oz.
  • Sleeps from 8-8 (unless her siblings wake her up) and generally takes 2 naps, sometimes 3
  • Says mama, dada, Cole, Brooke, baby, eye, hi, more, thank you, go, up, out, hello, cheese, Hals, grandpa, grandma, Blair, no, ahhh (for a drink)
  • Imitates lots of words
  • Usually calls Brooke-- Cole
  • Obsessed with cell phones
  • Will hold up a camera and say cheese
  • Pulls up and walks along furniture.  Can stand by herself, but won't.  Has no desire to walk
  • Gives kisses and blows kisses
  • Is on an iron supplement for extremely low iron... we're hoping a couple more months will fix this!
  • Frequently says go, go, go when we are at church.
  • Screams!  This is a horrible curse of my child.  Anytime we get in the car, if one of her siblings has something she wants, or if she's not getting something she wants fast enough she screams a super loud, high-pitched scream.  Nothing stops it.  I don't know where she learned it, but boy is it awful.
  • Loves the tub

    Cheer Camp

Brooke and Bentlee went to the SV cheer camp this year.  They ended up in different groups because of their age, but they had a blast.

    Big Girl

This girl will be 1 in two weeks!  And she thinks she is SOOO big!

    • Crawls up stairs
    • Stands up and walks along furniture
    • Will walk while holding both hands, but sits down as soon as you let go of one
    • Says mom, grandma, dad, grandpa, Brooke, Cole, Hals, thank you, Blair, out, hi, hello, and hot
    • Waves and says "hi" to everyone in the store
    • Holds and drinks from her own sippy cup, but will only hold her bottle if she is absolutely desperate
    • Generally sleeps from 7:30-7:30 and takes 2 -2 hour naps during the day
    • Loves to dance
    • Likes to use rags and clean the floor
    • Into everything! (especially dog food)
    • Loves balls
    • Has curly, curly hair
    • Loves brushing her teeth
    • Likes apples and cookies and... pretty much everything, except bananas and cow's milk

    As usual...

As usual, my blog has been totally neglected.  But in my defense, my blog is about the only thing in our life that is usual right now.  The last six weeks have been hectic and full of change.

We've had our house up for sale since March and we accepted an offer on it in August.  At the time, it was exciting and everything we had been hoping for.  The offer ended up falling through about a month later, but the same day we got another one.  Once I realized this one was really going to go through, I started to panick, just a little.

I was excited to start a new journey and of course, this is what we've been wanting and praying for so we knew it was right, but as the days drew closer I started to worry more and more.  I loved my house, my ward, my friends, and my kids friends and schools in Syracuse.  Was I really willing to give all of that up?  I just pressed on each day, packing as much as I could, not thinking about what was happening.  I think the hardest day hit me when Brooke's preschool teacher (also a neighbor and good friend) told me that they sang a goodbye song to her and she cried.  That just about broke my heart.  It is one thing for me to be sad, but entirely another when it affects my kids.  But alas, we pressed forward and here we are.

We've been in our apartment just over week and things seem to be going well, although different.  I'm slowly getting down a new schedule and Matt is definitely enjoying being so close to work.

Moving was hard.  I never realized how much STUFF we have.  A lot of it went into storage, but even still there was a lot to be moved.  How grateful I am for good neighbors who were willing to help and for Elder's Quorums for helping even people who they don't know move into a 3RD FLOOR APARTMENT.  I'm sure they were just dying when they found that out.  And for family who took our kids so we could move without having to deal with them running around.

Finding a new preschool was also hard.  Preschools are way more expensive here than what I am used to.  Plus, it is the middle of the year and everyone is full.  I called a dozen, visited a couple, and finally found one for Brooke that I absolutely love.  It is 4 days a week and she has the most adorable mom and daughter teachers.  It is nearly triple the price of what I was paying in Syracuse, but it has been good for her to make new friends and have something to do everyday.  Because of the expense, I took Cole out for this year.  He is a young 3 and still has two years he'll be able to do preschool  He doesn't seem to mind, but does get a little bored being home with me all day.  I need to find him a friend to play with.

Church was a new experience.  How grateful I am to have the gospel and know that there will be people everywhere that share your beliefs and standards, but none the less, it was a different experience.  We are used to being the youngest in the ward, knowing everyone, and being very involved.  Now, we are nearly the oldest of the families, surrounded by "newly weds and nearly deads" (as our new neighbor put it) and don't know a single soul.  People have been very kind and welcoming.  I'm sure it will take time to adjust.

I have started watching a little baby a few times a week and that has been so much fun.  My Bailee will be one in a couple weeks and the kids and I have really enjoyed have a little one around.  He is such a good baby, I couldn't ask for a better job! :)

I miss my treadmill (I still go to the gym most mornings, but it just isn't the same), I miss running with Kirsten 3 times a week, I miss my friends, I miss watching my neighbors kids on Tuesdays and having 3 hours to myself on Wednesday's when she tended mine, I miss my cleaning jobs, I miss knowing where the stores are that I like to shop at... I could go on and on.  BUT, I love having more time with Matt, I love achieving the goals we've worked so hard to accomplish, I love that Matt only has to fill his gas tank once a month instead of every other day, I love meeting new people and having new experiences.  I know this is where we are meant to be and that there will be hard days and better days.  I am glad that we are still able to live in Utah and be close enough to go "home" whenever I want.  I remember feeling much this same way when we moved to Syracuse.  I'm sure as time goes on I will learn to love it here too.

President Monson said, "Despite the changes which come into our lives and with gratitude in our hearts, may we fill our days—as much as we can—with those things which matter most. May we cherish those we hold dear and express our love to them in word and in deed.  Stresses in our lives come regardless of our circumstances. We must deal with them the best we can. But we should not let them get in the way of what is most important—and what is most important almost always involves the people around us.

Rather than dwelling on the past, we should make the most of today, of the here and now, doing all we can to provide pleasant memories for the future.

This is our one and only chance at mortal life—here and now. The longer we live, the greater is our realization that it is brief. Opportunities come, and then they are gone. I believe that among the greatest lessons we are to learn in this short sojourn upon the earth are lessons that help us distinguish between what is important and what is not.

I plead with you not to let those most important things pass you by as you plan for that illusive and nonexistent future when you will have time to do all that you want to do. Instead, find joy in the journey—now.

Yes, there is pain in change, but there is also great satisfaction in recognizing that progress is being achieved."

Being a mother and wife in zion, raising a righteous family, and serving  is what is important.  No matter where I go, that will always stay constant.  I can't tell you how many times I wished I could be home when I was working.  Never I have wished that I could be back at work instead of at home.  I am beyond grateful for the trials in life that teach us and help us grow, despite the pain and challenges that come with them.  And even though change is hard, I am grateful for all my many many many blessings.

    Halloween

We had just moved about two days before Halloween, so I wasn't sure how it would go this year, but we ended up having a lot of fun.  We were able to go to a party and trick-or-treating with some friend's from Cafe Rio and their families.  This is the first year we've taken all the kids "real" trick or treating and not just to a few houses.  They loved running from door to door and saying "trick-or-treat."  Brooke and Bailee were kitties and Cole was a fireman (which he still wears daily :))

The kids both had programs at preschool and trick or treating with their preschool friends the week before we moved.  Brookelyn is a regular performer!  If I can figure it out, I'll try to post video later.  Cole is much more shy and just sat in his chair most of the time.  It was fun to be able to watch them with their friends though, we sure miss Lisa!
    Brooke, Mckenzie, and Landon
Cole and his best buddy Jonas

    3 Years Old

I'm only about two months late on this one :)

Cole turned 3 on September 28th.  We had a fireman party for him at my mom's with all his family and cousins.  He even got to go pick out his very own present with Brody and Amber.  No competition there for favorite uncle and aunt (ha ha Bla, you got some work to do :))  Matt and I gave him a lawn mower and trimmer and once he opened those he didn't care about opening anything else.  He had to go outside and trim  On his actual birthday, he took ice cream sandwiches to preschool, choose Pizza Factory for dinner, and then went bowling.

    Some of Cole's favorite things:
    mowing the lawn
    firetrucks and firemen
    playing outside
    apple juice
    Scooby-Doo fruit snacks
Weighs 30 lbs. and is 36" tall.
    Wears a size 10 shoe

    Updates Updates!

I am such a slacker.  Matt says he's given up on my blog.  Lets be honest though, it really isn't at the top of my priority list, especially when it is summer and I'm rarely home :)
Now that school is back in and we actually have a schedule, I have LOTS of updates.  I'm going to start with the most recent and work my way back to July.  Check back the next few days and scroll down to see everything we have been up to.

    Fun Things

Other fun things we've done this summer that I don't have pictures of:

    • Swim lessons at Gin's
    • Lots of time at Grandma Beck's
    • Lots of time with Aunt Bla
    • Sleepovers at Annie's and Cammie's
    • Trip to Vegas for Matt and Bobbie
    • Swimming at our neighborhood pool
    • Planting a garden
    • Mowing the lawn with daddy and Grandpa Brad
    • Accepting an offer on our house... preparing to move to SLC
    • Riding the 4-wheeler to take the big dogs to the canal
    • Seeing Carrie & her girls from Virginia
    • Real Salt Lake Soccer game in the Cafe Rio Suite
    • Riding the "fast train" to Salt Lake to Dad's softball game
    • Family party at Grandpa Popcorn's before Kortni and Jeremy left with the military.

Also, I thought I should include since I never have and I realize there are a few people who read my blog who don't know my family...

I have one brother and one sister.  Brody and Blair.

I also have two double cousins who are like my sisters.  Kelsey and Annie.  Their mom is my mom's sister.  Their dad is my dad's brother.

So basically it goes like this... brothers married sisters.  On our mom's side of the family there is only the two of them.  That means 5 grandchildren and our spouses (Kelsey and Chris; Annie and Nate - who have Bentlee and Tate; Bobbie and Matt - who have Brooke, Cole, and Bailee; Brody and Amber; and Blair)

On our dad's side of the family, we have lots of aunts/uncles/cousins.  This is Grandpa Popcorn's family.  ALL my family lives somewhere in Cache Vallley.  There are 4 brothers who all live on the same block.  Their 2 sisters also live in the Valley, but in different towns.

That probably didn't make much sense.  It is hard to explain.  Hopefully it will help clear up some confusion to those who don't know my family.

    Preschool

Brooke and Cole are in preschool this year.  Yesterday was their first day.  Brooke was so excited she could hardly sleep.  Cole had a harder time and was sobbing when I left him, but the teacher said he was fine as soon as a left and had a good time.  He's the youngest in his class, not 3 for another month, but I wanted him to have something of his own to do without his sisters during the day.
