Blood Slurpee

The other night I had dinner with some of my womb-to-tomb friends, ya know, those kind of friends that you can go months without seeing, but as soon as you see them, you just pick up where you left off. That, and we were practically raised together so, I consider them more family than friends (Shout out!)... I was then reminded that during each of our friendships, I have almost killed all of them.. Literally. Not on purpose, but seriously, I almost ended all of their lives and for some of them, I almost have done it twice... Maybe, I should have called this post, "Don't Call the Cops." But don't worry, I'm not a serial killer.. let me explain.

The tale starts with me turning 16. Since my birthday is in October and I am slightly impatient, I decided to take private driving lessons rather than waiting and taking the drivers ed offered in High School. I'm pretty sure that I was the only one that spoke fluent English at A-1 Driving, but I made friends all the same. Sure, they were ex-junkies and maybe ex-sex-offenders, but we all had one common goal, to drive like the wind! I can recall two times that I prayed while on test drives... The first was when the Russian didn't know how to read the road signs (I am pretty sure, when we almost killed 5 children in a school zone, I vowed to serve the Lord from then on...) and the second was when the Ex-Junkie got the shakes on the freeway.... Jesus really did take the wheel then, well, Jesus and the instructor... In my bias opinion, I was probably the best driver at that place and you better believe I got a 92% on the written exam, but that didn't stop me from traumatizing 3 of my great friends..(foreshadowing...)

Being the youngest kid in the family, I got the hand me down car, a white Pontiac Grand Prix, aka the rubber maid car ever since my sister and I hydroplaned on the freeway and slammed into a cement barrier only to find no damage to the car.. All I remember is my sister yelling at me for cussing on this occasion, never mind the fact that she almost killed us..

The weekend I got my license, my parents let me go for a night out on the town with my 3 friends, Katie, Katherine and Ryan. We all buckled in and headed here and there and eventually made it to the local 7-11 for some Slurpee's. We were high class kids. I don't really know what we were doing, but all I know is that we headed back to our neighborhood, drinking our cherry Slurpees and then we were headed out again listening to some Dixie Chicks (I know, real manly of me... I think it was even Cowboy Take Me Away... maybe I shouldn't have told you that...) when suddenly I forgot what a stop sign meant...

As we flew through the stop sign, I remember Katherine pointing out her window with her Slurpee-free hand at a black Suburban heading at what seemed to be roughly the speed of light toward the passenger side of my little white Pontiac. I believe Katie and Katherine screamed while Ryan remained mute in the back, waiting for instant death. After my car did a little 180 shuffle, the car came to a stop...

When I came to (or just became aware of my surroundings, not sure which) I saw what looked like all three of my friends had exploded inside my car... But for some reason the blood smelled like sweet cherries, oh wait.. either way, my car was totaled and was cherry/blood stained.. mostly cherry Slurpee stained though so, don't worry...

In the thick of it all, Katherine lost and then found her glasses in mid-twirl, Ryan never said a word (which shouldn't surprise any of you who know him), Katie hit her head and continued to repeat, "What happened?"  over and over again, to which Katherine continued to tell her the brutal truth and me? Me, I remained pretty calm (alright not very calm...) until I called my parents, then I cried my eyes out.. Yep.. I showed emotion. I know weird, right?

Anyway, isn't it funny how things can seem to be the end of the world and all blood and guts at the time and then looking back, it's just... not, it's just all Slurpee. Makes ya think right? In the end, I was unsuccessful at killing any of my friends, but that didn't stop me from trying to kill one of them again and this time on a speed boat.. Stay tuned for that tale. mwuahahahaha!!

(Seriously, don't call the cops..)

Music Mayhem

The music-mill has been churning out some awesome music this year and it isn't even over yet! Let me keep you up to date on the less known artists that I love and then go and get yourself this music! Don't make me tell you twice...

Some of this might be a review...
Click on their pictures to go to their sites and click on my favorites to listen to a little clip or two.. maybe.

 YOUNG THE GIANT
FAVORITES: My Body & I Got
This rock band has got it going on. I saw them perform on the VMA's and I immediately had to download their stuff. If you are looking for something to workout to, I suggest, My Body, their song not my actual body...
 BEN RECTOR
FAVORITES: After All & Moving Backwards
Ben Rectors' music could be the soundtrack of my life. I know you have heard me talk about him before and well, here I am talking about him again. He is awesome live and he is coming out with a new album drops on September 13 (iTunes Tuesday!) and I would shank a small child to get it earlier... that is how much I love this guy.
 ANDY GRAMMER
FAVORITES: Slow & Keep Your Head Up
I discovered Andy this year and on a whim, I downloaded the entire CD, which is kind of unheard of for me. But guess what, I love every song. He is the perfect combination of groovy pop that I am really digging right now. Give him a listen and you will definitely be stuck on repeat on some of his songs instantly!
 NATHAN ANGELO
FAVORITES: Hurt & Born To Love You
I have followed Nathan for a while, but I was a casual follower (not to be confused with worship) until his new CD dropped. Every song is like candy. The whole CD is upbeat and fun. The title alone of Follow Your Heart is enough for everyone to go and buy this album... it's what my heart wanted, yours will, too.
JON MCLAUGHLIN
FAVORITES: Already In & Things That You Say
Oh boy. Jon is coming out with a CD TODAY and I already have it! September 6th, the album drops and I could not be more excited! Listening to the clips of the songs I can tell I am going to love every second of it. His voice is like creamy peanut butter and his lyrics cut straight to the soul...
 GABE DIXON
FAVORITES: The World Turned & Even the Rain
I know you have also heard me talk about this guy, but I finally had a chance to listen to his new CD and wow... He didn't disappoint. Even The Rain is one of my favorites on the new album and his lyrics just blow me away every time! Not to mention his mad piano skills make me want to throw up and then start playing the piano again. So. Freaking. Good.
JAMES MORRISON
FAVORITES: Undiscovered & If You Don't Wanna Love Me
James is back with his raspy, but in tune soulful voice! His Cd has yet to drop in the US and I am not sure when it will, but everyone should be on the look out. This guy is awesome.

 MATT NATHANSON
FAVORITES: Bottom of the Sea & Drop To Hold You
Where did this CD come from? Oh, that's' right, straight from Heaven. He is another lyrical master and guitarist to boot! He is coming to Salt Lake in October. After my recent scare of concerts, I may have to miss it, but he just is so good... what a dilemma.
MATT WERTZ
FAVORITES: Red Meets Blue & Sing Your Lonesome Away
What can I say? I want this guys life. Literally, I want to kill him and then become him because his talent was sent straight from Jesus. Ok.. that was a little hasty, but do you understand how great this guy is? Good. Now go buy his album.
 MAT KEARNEY
FAVORITES: Sooner or Later & Hey Mama
Mat, Mat, Mat... this CD was like it was injected with a full 60cc syringe of joy, passion and delight! I couldn't help, but love every song on the CD. I have officially become a Mat Kearney junkie and I am so happy he found an upbeat side to him though I love his more mellow stuff, too.
JEREMY LISTER
FAVORITES: The Bed You Made & Killing You
I don't even know how I found this guy.. ok, I do, it's called I should be doing anything, but looking stuff up on iTunes... I can't help it! Anyway, he is awesome. His seemingly easy-going melodies are covered with amazing lyrics that make you think. And it helps that his voice could soothe any weary soul.

Great Expectations

There once was a kid.
This kid told a tiny fib.
A fib to another kid, to simply keep up.
To keep up to a pup who had great expectations.
(Are you following me?)

These great expectations conjured up speculation
and even a little mild flirtation.
A flirtation and speculation that was never meant to increase this expectation.
More expectation lead to frustration and complication.
(Raise your hand if you are lost...)

Why must we have such great expectations?
I expect an explanation....
Can't we have just a little flirtation without defining a relation?
I am drowning in great expectations...
(That was a little more straight forward, did you get it?)

There once was a kid.
A kid who has learned not to fib.
(This is the moral of my poem/rhyme aka take home message)

Isn't it annoying when you read something and you understand nothing about what you read?
I know how you feel, but this one is up for interpretation. What does it mean to you? Ready... go!

PS Catchy post title... they should make a book about it...
