I Have Earned The Right...

October and Pink - aka Pinktober - is almost here.  All over Facebook, Twitter and the Blog world women are starting up their campaign to make people, especially women who have or had breast cancer, feel guilty for wearing Pink.  What is the deal with this anyway? Aren't we all in this fight together?

I've heard all the commotion regarding so much PINK.  I've heard in almost a condemning way, statements from people about how Breast Cancer gets all the attention. Yes, there is noise about Breast Cancer but that noise is fairly recent.  When I was growing up no one spoke of cancer much but Breast Cancer was never, ever mentioned.  It was almost a 'shameful' cancer.  Thanks to the Susan G. Komen foundation, the American Cancer Society and others that view has changed.

At times, especially in October, it appears that the pendulum is swinging too far the other way. There are a lot of companies that promote Pink in October.  They play on the sympathies and feelings of others.  Very little of their proceeds go to Breast Cancer research. Research for viable treatments to fight Stage IV Metastic Breast Cancer is what is needed.  A person would have to be from a galaxy far, far away to not be AWARE of Breast Cancer. That AWARENESS train has left the station. Now we need to do MORE about treatments.  We need to support those organizations that actually do something towards research and treatment.

HOWEVER, the one thing I really want to put out there is this.... neither myself or anyone else should have to explain ourselves if we want to wear a Pink shirt and walk in support of the American Cancer Society or any other group.  I have earned the right to buy a pink hammer if I want.  I have been in the cancer trenches.

Chemo Treatment

I was diagnosed with Stage IIB Invasive Ductual Carcinoma. I had a double mastectomy and had lymph nodes taken from both armpits.  One lymph node showed metastasized cancer cells.  I dealt with drains attached to my body for weeks.  I had 18 treatments of chemo, lost my hair, eye lashes, eye brows, gained weight, was nauseous, all my fingernails turned black and lifted as well as two of my toenails.  I dealt with insomnia on the nights I wasn't medicated up for pain and still haven't got a handle on the fatigue.  I tried to have a good attitude about all the poison that was being pushed into my body. My clothes don't fit any more... especially the shirts. Bras?? Ugh...they are terrible. Things are not the same physically or emotionally.

Believe me, I am not claiming to know all the feelings that a person with stage IV is dealing with.  I do, however, understand some of the treatments and surgeries that they too had to endure. Anyone who deals with cancer pays a price.  I have earned my "get in free card" - to walk, run, scream, shout and Wear PINK if I want and not be criticized for doing it.

I realize the Mets road of Stage IV is filled with a lot of emotion.  I really am not waving my banner or wearing my pink shirt in anyone's face. I support funding for resources and treatments for Stage IV now more then ever. My time could come when I will have those same worries.  Today, I want it to be OK with all my pink sisters that I celebrate in October - wear pink - walk or dance around Liberty Park to celebrate how far we've come and how much further we need to go.  I believe I have earned that Right.

I'm Back~

I am back to having this blog as my one and only....  I ended my "Fight Like  A Girl" blog last week thanking everyone for their support.  I felt it was time to let the cancer commentary end and move forward with documenting my FUN FILLED life!

January was crazy and February is becoming that way.  I don't think I had a weekend where I wasn't doing something.  First off, was my birthday.... Growing older at this point is NOT a bad thing. Random pictures from my birthday party...

My friend Sandy came up for the P!NK concert - which was originally scheduled in October.  She stayed the weekend and we had a blast shopping for PINK things to wear to the concert.

The hair!  Totally fun!!

The weekend of Rick's birthday, he and Anna came to Utah. Rick wanted to spend a day at the cabin so we loaded up everything and headed up Friday - coming back Saturday on Rick's birthday.  We arrived home just in time for everyone to shower and then head out to dinner at the Cliff House in Sandy to celebrate with the other family (adult) peeps.  Randy, Annie, Jenni, Lynn and their kids came to my house on Sunday for more birthday cake and more birthday celebration for Rick.  We had to celebrate!! He turned 30!!

Rick and I at the cabin

I received an exciting message from my long time friend Rea.  She is engaged!! After 18 years of being single she met a wonderful guy!  Third one's the charm!!  Rea, Colette and I met for dinner to celebrate her engagement~  Wahooooo

We always have a good time together!

I have known these gals for 28 years. Love them~

The first weekend in February was another time for celebration!  Hank had a birthday and turned 9 years old!!  WOW - time really does fly!!  His birthday was on super bowl Sunday so Annie and Randy hosted everyone for a super bowl/birthday party.  It was a lot of fun.

Happy Birthday Hank!!

My life continues to get busier and busier as things return to some type of normal.  I'm so glad to get the past 18 months of worrying about cancer and chemo behind me. Nothing is more fun then feeling good and hanging with my family!!

Cabin Full of Love

Such a great weekend!!

Randy, Annie, Hank, Max, Sam
Jenni, Lynn, Dyson, Colby, Lennon
along with Scott and I
went to the cabin for some fun~

This has turned into an annual event.  I like to get everyone up there at least once in the winter and once in the summer.  Winter didn't work out this year but YAY for our summer plans.

We did A LOT of 4-wheeling!!

I actually rode a few times but there are no pics of that.... take my word - it was great fun!!

There was a little Chipmunk feeding...

Plenty of playing games, watching movies
and all kinds of things......

Plenty of food

and, of course... SMORES!!

I took a couple of family group pictures.

We had one mishap.  Max cut his toe on the frame of the sofabed downstairs.  Randy and Scott ended up taking him to the ER to make sure everything was alright.  The doctor didn't do stitches as he wanted to avoid any possible infection.  Below is a picture of the injury the following morning.... yuck! Poor Max but he was a Super TROOPER!!

Sadly, Sunday evening rolled around and it was time to pack up and head out.  The grandkids wanted to stay until Thursday (don't know why Thursday).  But we'll be back.

We all had a wonderful time.  Maybe someday Owen can join his cousins in the cabin fun and Rusty, Collette, Rick and Anna can join their siblings.  One day it will happen!  I know it will!!

All of us just before leaving
