Stake Relief Society Retreat

Join us September 21st and 22nd at Camp Stimson for great food, fun and sisterhood!

 

The fun begins Friday at 4pm with dinner at 5:30pm. A program featuring Jolene Allphin and President Richards will follow dinner at 7pm.

 

Saturday begins with sunrise yoga and breakfast at 8am. Classes begin at 10am and include:

Stake Pioneer Day Celebration

The Stake Pioneer Day Celebration will be held Saturday, July 21st at the Thom pavilion.  The party goes from 5-8:30pm with water slides, pioneer crafts, games, a car show, lots of yummy food, and great entertainment. Hope to see you there!

Look at me, look at me, look at me now!
You could do what I do
If you only knew how.
I study the scriptures one hour each day;
I bake,
I upholster,
I scrub,
and I pray.
I always keep all the commandments completely;
I speak to my little ones gently and sweetly.
I help in their classrooms!
I sew all they wear!
I drive them to practice!
I cut all their hair!
I memorize names of the General Authorities;
I focus on things to be done by priorities.
I play the piano!
I bless with my talents!
My toilets all sparkle!
My checkbooks all balance!
Each week every child gets a one-on-one date;
I attend all my meetings (on time! Never late!)
           I’m taking a class on the teachings of Paul,
           But that is not all! Oh, no. That is not all .
        

I track my bad habits ’til each is abolished;
Our t-shirts are ironed!
My toenails are polished!
Our family home evenings are always delightful;
The lessons I give are both fun and insightful.
I do genealogy faithfully, too.
It’s easy to do all the things that I do!
I rise each day early, refreshed and awake;
I know all the names of each youth in my stake!
I read to my children!
I help all my neighbors!
I bless the community, too, with my labors.
I exercise and I cook menus gourmet;
My visiting teaching is done the first day!
(I also go do it for someone who missed hers.
It’s the least I can do for my cherished ward sisters.)
I chart resolutions and check off each goal;
I seek each “lost lamb” on my Primary roll.
I can home-grown produce each summer and fall.
But that is not all! Oh, no. That is not all .
        

I write in my journal!
I sing in the choir!
Each day, I write “thank you’s” to those I admire.
My sons were all Eagles when they were fourteen!
My kids get straight A’s!
And their bedrooms are clean!
I have a home business to help make some money;
I always look beautifully groomed for my honey.
I go to the temple at least once a week;
I change the car’s tires!
I fix the sink’s leak!

I grind my own wheat and I bake all our bread;
I have all our meals planned out six months ahead.
I make sure I rotate our two-years’ supply;
My shopping for Christmas is done by July!
These things are not hard;
’tis good if you do them;
You can if you try!
Just set goals and pursue them!
It’s easy to do all the things that I do!
If you plan and work smart, you can do them all, too!

Ward Picnic

The ward will be having a picnic at Mt. Charleston on Saturday, June 9th at the Foxtail picnic area.  We have reserved the space from 8am-8pm so you are welcome to come make a day of it or just come for lunch at 1pm.  The ward will provide the main dish. Sign ups for side dishes will be sent around next Sunday.  Come enjoy the beauty and cool weather on the mountain! (dont forget to bring blankets or camping chairs)

Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing

We all have so much on our plate and that plate often seems to over flow with good things to do.  This was the topic of our June presidency message (which was a little bit early this month).  We discussed some great council from Sister Beck on how we can prioritize all of the good and important things in our life and avoid becoming weary.

Sister Beck said: “A good woman knows that she does not have enough time, energy, or opportunity to take care of all of the people or do all of the worthy things her heart yearns to do. Life is not calm for most women, and each day seems to require the accomplishment of a million things, most of which are important. A good woman must constantly resist alluring and deceptive messages from many sources telling her that she is entitled to more time away from her responsibilities and that she deserves a life of greater ease and independence. But with personal revelation, she can prioritize correctly and navigate this life confidently. The ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation is the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life." —Julie B. Beck


She also teaches us to prioritize our to do list into three categories:  Essential, Necessary and Nice-to-do.

Stake Conference

Stake Conference will be held Saturday May 19th and Sunday May 20th.  The Stake Presidency has encouraged us to make time to attend the temple in preparation for stake conference.  Members of the stake are invited to attend the 6:30pm session on Friday, May 18th or another session that week.

1940 Census

The 1940 Census has been made available and is now being indexed!  Images of all of the pages of the census are now available to view, but they are not searchable.  The indexing effort will make all of the images searchable so that you can easily locate your relatives.  The 1940 census has interesting information that wasn't part of previous census records, such as whether the home was owned or rented and how much the home was worth.

In the week that the images have been available for indexing, more than 17 million records have been indexed. All of the images for the state of Delaware have been indexed and will be ready to search in the next few days.  Indexing is easy and you may run across a relative or two in your work!

Current 1940 US Census indexing projects include the following states: Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. More states are added every day, so keep checking back if your state isn't listed.

Especially For Families

 "Especially For Families" marriage and family workshop on Saturday, April 28th from 1-4pm.  A variety of classes will be held at the chapel at 3400 W. Charleston (Charleston & Valley View). Experts will present topics such as: Strengthening your Marriage, Financial Security, Raising Confident Kids, Parenting Techniques, etc. This is a regional event sponsored by LDS Famly Services

New Church Resource

The church has produced a new series of videos based on the stories of the New Testament.  They are beautiful and an excellent teaching tool.  They are available on line and as an app for mobile devices.

Youth Conference Dates

Mark your calendars!  Youth conference will be held April 20th-22nd for young men and young women ages 14 and up.  They will kick off the event with dinner on Friday night.

Picnic in the Pavilion

We are getting together to visit and let kids play while the men are at the Priesthood Session of conference.  Meet at the pavilion at 5:30pm with a picnic dinner.  RS will provides drinks and dessert. (The Priesthood Session begins at 5pm at the stake center)

We're Moving!

The Iron Mountain Ward will be moving to the Stake Center.  Beginning Sunday, April 15th, our ward will meet at 1pm at the stake center, rather than the Thom Building.  All weekday activities will also move to the stake center after that date.  This move will give us so much more room for Sacrament meeting and for activities!

Seussical the Musical

The Stake Musical has changed dates! Mark your calendar for a night of fun! Come see what the Whos in Whoville have been doing in Seussical the Musical Friday, April 13th 7pm and Saturday, April 14th at 4pm and 7pm. We have a lot of talented youth and adults that have put together a remarkable show. Admission is free- so bring the whole family! Don’t miss this opportunity to see good fun family entertainment.

Stake RS Humanitarian Day

There have been some recent changes to the stake RS humanitarian day.  From now on it will be called Humanitarian Helping Hands.  Our stake will be collaborating with other stakes in the valley to meet local humanitarian needs.  The date and time will remain the same (third Tuesdays at 9am-noon and 6-8:30).  They will be adding some classes for those that would like to learn some new skills.  During the meetings in March and April, they will be teaching crocheting and quilting with hidden ties.  Class times will be 1030am and 7pm.

RS song in Sacrament Meeting

All RS sisters have been asked to sing in Sacrament meeting on the 18th. We will be singing hymn number 220 "Lord, I Would Follow Thee"

RS Pot Luck Lunch

The RS will be hosting monthly pot luck lunches for those that would like to get together.  The next one will be held at noon at Sister Juden's home.  This month we will also be learning how to make freezer jam and how to use food storage wheat in a yummy way.  Children welcome.

Stake Employment Meeting

A great big thank you to those who have attended the employment meeting so far this year!  The attendance rate for the Relief Society has almost doubled this year (which is fantastic because we were at a sad 40% attendance rate last year).  The assignments for the next several months are posted on the blog and will be announced weekly.  If you can't make it on the night you are assigned, please switch with someone else.

RS Birthday Celebration is next Saturday!

Stake Relief Society Birthday Celebration 6pm at the Stake Center. Join us for a delicious dinner and musical program celebrating "Daughters In My Kingdom". Sunday dress. Please invite those you visit teach!

Cannery Date

Our ward is scheduled at the Cannery on Wednesday, March 7th.  Items available are: Macaroni, sugar, powdered milk, white beans, carrots, oats and quick oats.  Payment is due to Sister White this Sunday (Mar 4)

Youth Activity Changes

For the next two weeks (Feb 29 & Mar 7) the youth will meet at the Stake Center at 7pm for the stake speech festival for their Wednesday activities.

The following two weeks (Mar 14 & Mar 21) classes will be having their activities at a location other than the church buildings as the stake will be using both buildings for continued festival meetings.  More details about the last two weeks to come.

Friends of Scouting

The scouts and their leaders will be collecting donations as well as pledges during the third hour of church on Sunday for Friends of Scouting.  If you would like to help support the scouting program in our ward, you may make a cash or check donation on Sunday or fill out a pledge form and be billed throughout the year by the BSA.

"Arise and Shine Forth" breakfast

"Arise and Shine Forth" breakfast for all Young Women and their parents Saturday, March 3 from 7-8:30 am.  Come join us for an awesome breakfast and New Beginnings program.  Pajamas are appropriate and welcome!!  (Please contact any YW leader if you have questions.)  We LOVE your girls and hope to see you there!!!

CCSD Parents meeting

Parents of children in the Clark County School District, have you heard new terms like ‘Common Core Standards’ being talked about?

The school district is in the process of dramatically changing its curriculum procedures and it WILL affect your child regardless of their grade level.

Personal Progress Fireside

Personal Progress fireside for ALL Young Women and their parents at 7pm in the seminary wing. The "Mentor" program will be introduced as well as an online demonstration of the tracking program for personal progress experiences and projects.  All are encouraged to attend, even young women who have earned their medallions, as they will be asked to participate as mentors while earning their Honor Bee award. We realize that this event conflicts with the self defense class being offered that evening, but Brother Lyman has agreed to repeat the class at another time for our ward so that all young women and their parents can attend the fireside.  

Seussical the Musical

Calling ages 12 and up, adults included! The Tule Springs Stake will be performing Seussical the Musical, a musical based on the Dr. Seuss books on May 10-12.  Audition time will be Saturday, February 18th from 6-8pm at the Tule Springs Stake Center.  Please come prepared with a sample of 24 bars of a song, preferably from a musical. (A pianist and iPod player will be provided.) The audition will be some simple dance steps and you will be reading lines. 

 

We are also looking for help directing, costumes, lighting and other technical background assistance.  Please come help participate and make this a special event! More information to follow....

Daddy Daughter Stake Activity

All 8-11 year-old activity day girls and their Fathers are invited to the Daddy Daughter Stake Activity that will be on Feb 17th from 6:30-8:30pm at the stake center. It is a country fair theme so wear your boots and hats. There will be dancing, games and dessert. We hope to see you there!

Cookie Exchange

Join the Relief Society for a cookie exchange/luncheon on Tuesday, February 7th at Angela Jones' home at 11:45am.  Bring 3 dozen of your favorite treat and something to share for lunch. Children welcome.

Priesthood Preview will be held Sunday, January 29th at 7pm in the Primary Room. It is for 11 year-old boys and their parents.

Our next Relief Society weekday meeting will be held Thursday, February 2nd at 6:30pm. We are excited to learn about gardening from President Noorda.

All current and incoming YW and their parents are invited to "Arise and Shine Forth" at the New Beginnings breakfast on Saturday, February 4th at 8am.

The annual Mountain Man Rendezvous in Moapa is coming up on February 10th and 11th.  It is for all young men 11 and up. Money is due this sunday

Activities will include: Horseshoes, Flint Knapping, Stick Pull, Cabor Toss, Bullet Molding, Black Powder Shooting, Gold Panning, Trapping,  Course Navigation, Hawk Throw, Knife Throwing, Woodcarving Pioneering, Bull Whip,  Rope Making  Flint & Steel Long Saw Indian Games, & Archery. Come join in the fun!!!

The YW Girl's Camp dates are June 18 - 23, 2012.  Please mark your calendars and "Save the Date".   We will be travelling to Moab, UT and participating in many fun and new adventures.  Deadline for girls to have their money turned in to Sis. Scholarship Presentation

Smartnight will be having a presentation on college scholarships.  They will have a special speaker to fill you in on all the best ways to find scholarships.  This is a wonderful opportunity for all High School Juniors and Seniors.  It will be held this Tuesday, Jan. 31st during Smartnight.

Mountain Man Rendezvous

The 2012 Mountain Man Rendezvous is coming up on February 10th & 11th for all Scouts 11 years old and up.  The cost is $25 and will cover all meals.  Money is due this Sunday. Please fill out a donation/tithing slip with the scouts name and a note on the "other" line for the event and give it to a member of the bishopric.

A Multi-Stake Employment Networking Meeting is held each Tuesday at 7pm at the Elkhorn Springs Stake Center.  This is a chance to network with individuals about careers and possible job opportunities.  Anyone seeking employment is encouraged to attend.  If you have been given this assignment, please make sure to attend or find someone to take your place. 
In conjunction with the Employment Networking Meeting, the stake has assigned each ward to provide 6 job referrals per week to the stake employment specialist.  These job referrals can come from your place of employment, job leads you hear about through friends, or jobs you learn about from places you do business with. We have created an on-line form that you can fill out when you hear of an available job.  Once you submit the form, the information is automatically sent to our ward employment specialist as well as our stake employment specialist. The form can be found HERE.

The RS meeting originally scheduled for 1/26 has been moved to 2/2.  President Noorda will be coming to speak to us about gardening.  The time to plant is rapidly approaching!

Algebra for Parents

'Algebra for Parents' at Smart Night starting Tuesday, January 10 from 6:00-7:30pm.

This class is for you if your child's math homework (even in middle school) is beyond you.

New Primary Resource

The Church has launched a new website with lots of helps for teaching children the gospel including a weekly blog post with new ideas.  Here is a description of the site:

It’s here! A new resource for parents, teachers, and leaders of children! Beginning this month, the Friend is publishing an online resource of additional helps for teaching children. Included here are stories, activities, and media that support the Primary lessons being taught in 2012. You will also find an index of ideas for different gospel topics. You can use these at home and in a variety of church settings. These ideas are all approved resources and can be used with full confidence that they are endorsed by the Church and meet the standard of teaching true doctrine.

It is a sacred responsibility to teach children the gospel of Jesus Christ and help them learn to live it. You are doing much more than teaching a lesson—you are teaching children to know and love the Savior, and helping them to be lifelong followers of Jesus Christ.

Starting January 11, 2012, YM/YW Mutual night will start at 7:15 pm and end no later than 8:30 pm.

Temple Service Opportunity

Our ward has been asked to provided workers to clean the temple tomorrow, January 5th at 6pm.  Workers must be endowed with a current recommend.  You will be helping with the biannual cleaning which includes all sorts of duties from dusting walls and light fixtures to cleaning telephones and hymn books.  It is a fun and unique service opportunity.  Please text Sister Smith if you are able to attend 885-1624

Stake Children's Choir

The Stake Children's Choir will begin its regular schedule this Friday, January 6, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Stake Center.  It is every first and third Fridays of the month from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  All children ages 8-12 are invited to attend.

Smart Night Update

How about a New Year’s Resolution to help your child do better in math?  Smart Night is offering an ongoing Algebra Class for Parents beginning January 10^th.

Attention Juniors (and their parents)--you should take the ACT or SAT Test this spring.  ACT Test Prep class at Smart Night starting January 17th.
