Ein the Firefox Dog

Bf saw Ein sleeping all curled up and couldn't help but place a squeaky ball in between Ein's front and back legs like so:




After I took a picture, Ein moved to another spot in the same firfox position. So bf took the ball and placed it in the same place, teehee. Ein just gave us a confused look and went back to sleep. ^_^

They sent me a day's worth of food, so I decided to split 1 meal each for Ein and Brian. The kibble, stew, and dried vegetables/fruits arrived in separate pouches. All I had to do was pour them into their bowls and give it all a stir.

Summery September

105 degrees on September 27th. And I was looking forward to mild weather on the first day of Autumn :( On the upside, it's helping my tomato plant finally bear fruit.


I finally got my d40 lens back on Sept. 21st. :) The camera shop told me they just found the part in the store...It only takes a week for the part to arrive to the shop and it takes a few seconds to install the mount. Yet, it took them 2 months for them to complete my repair; I had to call them to see if my order was ready for pickup, even though they assured that they would call me when it was ready. Oh, they are so horribly disorganized... Well, what matters is that it's back into my hands. My camera lens is as good as new! Let's hope that I won't have to return to that shop again...

Naughty Brian

Brian chewed up the one and only pair of high heels that I own. (Yeah, I'm not a high heels kind of girl.) I was just on the computer and I saw that Brian was happily gnawing on something below my legs. I got out of my seat and discovered that he somehow found one of my heels and decided it was his chew toy. And Brian's definitely grown past the chewing puppy stage. It just surprised me that he would do such a thing!

The cute thing is, when I slowly said his name and reached for my heels, his ears immediately went flat against his head and turned his blind eye to me. He's been doing that ever since he became blind in one eye, hehe.

So I just gave a gentle "No" while trying not to smile. And he just went lower down to the ground. Ooohhh!!!! I couldn’t resist but give him hugs then...He's supposed to be in trouble, darn it! :)

What else is new? I decided to get into container gardening :) So to start off, I got a Jalapeno plant, a Better Boy tomato plant, and a Venus fly trap from Home Depot. The Jalapeno plant is bearing lots of flowers and fruits! The Better Boy barely has 2 or 3 flowers blooming. And the Venus fly trap is dying :( I don't think it's humid enough for it to live...

I also got large leaf basil, chives, cilantro, curled leaf parsley, oregano, peppermint, and rosemary plants about 3 weeks later. I repotted them yesterday and I have my fingers crossed that it'll keep growing!

I'm starting to think that the farm life is for me! I want goats for milk, chickens for eggs, and want to grow more fruits, veggies, and herbs. And perhaps a few sheep for Ein and Brian to herd :)

Funny thing happened a few days ago. It was 8p.m., dinner time for the pups. Ein and Brian were frapping right and left across the backyard. They were running to the left when I opened the door and yelled, "Food!” Ein and Brian simultaneously did a V turn and ran in the house. :)

I still don't have my d40 lens. :'( It was supposed to be ready for pickup by August 16 after dropping it off July 26. The camera repair shop explained that since the d40 is no longer in production, the part that we need is hard to find...But they did put in the order. Supposedly. So my two choices are to wait it out until the $12 part magically arrives or tell bf's sister she has to buy me a new lens which I think ranges from $100-$200. I guess I'll just give them time for now.

An almost repeat incident of Brian's eye dealy

Brian turned 1 on August 12th. He spent his birthday with an extra treat, extra hugs and kisses. Something went wrong 4 days later though :( The following is a copy+paste from my Mycorgi posting.

August 16, 2010
I woke up today to find Brian's right eye (the good one) a little puffy, red around his eye, and with gunk. He's squinting and trying to get at it with his front paw and foot. I put the cone on him immediately.

I'm scared.. I'm hoping that this isn't a re-occurrence of the whole situation. I don't want him to go completely blind...going to take him to the eye vet.

Brian: 23.3lbs. @ 12 months old.

Ok, back from the eye vet. The Dr. performed the stain test and she found a superficial ulcer. The pressure was normal. Inflamed eyelid with a little bit of pus. They went to go flush his eye out and they took this giant weed out. (see pic below)


After seeing what was taken out of Brian's eye, I was in shock and in tears (happy tears). I'm so relieved that it is not the unknown. Dr. said I did a good thing to put an E-collar on him and that I brought him in right away. They prescribed antibiotics and would like to see him in 10-14 days.

Here's hoping that it his good eye doesn't get any worse! I suspect that the weed is from our backyard or from a farm that we visited 2 days ago. Just to be on the safe side, Bf said he's going to set the backyard on fire to incinerate all those evil weeds in the backyard. And I think I need to get Brian a pair of goggles to wear when he goes out. Brian seems happier now that the weed is out and he is resting right now.

The receptionist wanted me to come 3 hours later when I called them. But I figured the sooner I get this checked out, the better. So I asked if I could come over now and she spoke with the doctor and she said yes. :) I'm so glad I asked...imagine having that in your eye for 3 extra hours!

And I now wonder if this is how the other eye became blind...

Fast forward to 8/26:
Brian's doggles arrived. I got a size small, but it seems like the eye cups is a little too small for Brian since it squishes his eyes. See below:


Anyway, with time and meds, Brian's good eye is back to normal :)

Sheep herding

So 2 months ago, I went to take Ein and Brian to a sheep herding instinct test at K9 Action Sports in Escondido. It was Ein and Brian's first time on a farm. They were mostly interested in the dogs that were roaming around rather than the cows, chickens, and goats.

First up, was Ein! The instructor, Ein, and I entered the pen with 3 sheep and the instructor yelled "Chase the sheep!" I thought she was yelling that to Ein, but to my surprise, it was directed toward me.

She then explained that the point of the chase was to inspire Ein to chase the sheep. So I chased..er rather..the sheep chased me. See below:

Yep...I kept trying to go behind the sheep so I could chase them but the sheep would follow me resulting in a never ending merry-go-round.

After about 5 long minutes of making myself look like a fool, I was going to have bf's sis give it a try. Just when I walked over to her, Ein's instincts turned on all of a sudden. (I think Ein was messing with me...)
Brian was jumping up on the fence and he let out some barks, as if he was rooting Ein on.

So then came Brian's turn! Brian was a good boy and he just dove right in without me having to chase the sheep :)

It was funny watching them herd sheep, with their short lil stubs :)

We met a really tiny kitty! Ein and Brian were staring at the kitty, wanting to get closer. But considering the kitty's harsh-like stare, I decided to keep Ein and Brian at a distance away.


Headed back home! Ein and Brian passed the instinct test with flying colors! I'm so proud of my boys!

The instructor was especially impressed with Brian since he's blind in one eye. We were invited back for lessons but I'll pursue it when I have extra income rolling in.

Brian curled up napping on the drive back home, all cute-like.

A series of good, and not so good events.

I turned 21 on the 20th :) I'm finally officially legal! My bf threw me a birthday party the following Sunday with friends and his cousins over.
I brought my D40 out to take pictures and then I set it on top of the couch whilst everyone was watching. It was in plain sight and about a good foot into the couch area; so I was pretty confident that it wouldn't fall or else I wouldn't have set it there.

Hours later I set my camera down, my Bf's sister walked and leaned too far onto the couch as she walked passed and my D40 fell and hit the linoleum floor-just my luck. :( My D40's lens's rear cap mount(?) broke off so it needed to be replaced. There's no evident damage to the camera body itself, so it's okay. We dropped the lens off the next day to a camera repair shop and it will be ready for pick up by August 14th. So, I'll be without my good camera until then :( Anyway, the party continued on until midnight and a good time was had by all. :)

We gave Penny away to a nice, young couple on June 22nd. It just wasn't fair for her to be uncomfortable (with her being around Ein, Brian, and Sheldon). She needs an environment where she can relax by herself.

Sheldon passed away on July 15, 2010. It was 95 degrees outside and pretty humid. And it was 85 degrees inside the house. Upon discovery of Sheldon's passing, I checked online and 85 degrees was the point where rabbits are very uncomfortable. And since he was only 4 months old, it might have been too much for him. As we buried him in our backyard, raindrops fell and it thundered too. I then thought, "Seriously? Why couldn't have it been cooler sooner?" I felt like I was in a sad part of a movie then.

R.I.P. Sheldon. March 29, 2010 - July 15, 2010.


We owned him for only 2 months..he was the sweetest little shoulder bunny. Sheldon was Brian's good buddy. Brian would just sit next to Sheldon while Sheldon nibbled on alfalfa hay. Brian would also give Sheldon lots of kisses on the head. And Sheldon didn't mind it one bit.

I took Ein and Brian to go take their sheep herding instinct test today. I'll blog about it another day, perhaps tomorrow.

Bunnies

So a week ago, I was browsing the internet and found a holland lop that needed a new home; at a price that I couldn't refuse. I have always wanted a holland lop. This video started it all.
So I drove for an hour to the breeder's in hopes of bringing home the rabbit. I returned home with a rabbit AND a bunny. Yup...she had to show me the bunnies too. So let me introduce you to my Ein and Brian's relatives.

Meet Penny. She is a 1 year old Holland Lop rabbit.The breeder said that she was sweet and loves to run around. Well her love for running around was true! After holding her at the breeder's, I set her down on a table so I can try picking up another bunny. She decided to jump down from the table and run around in her backyard. It took us about 20 minutes to catch her...sucks because she was minutes late in picking up her kids from school. Woops.

So I think the chase should have been my first clue that she might not be right one for me. When I told the breeder that I am leaning towards the male bunny, she offered her for free since she wanted to clear out the cages for more show quality rabbits. I thought, "Eh, why not. She's free."

So I brought her home, and let her out of her box and she left a trail of poop all around our game room. Thank goodness rabbit poop is just small, solid pellets. When it was time for her to go back into her cage, she darted under my nightstand, ran in circles around the room. Since she had to choose the hard way, I had to use my laundry basket to catch her.

As for her sweetness, I find that a bit hard to believe. Uunfortunately, she charges at Ein, Brian, and Sheldon. She even charged at me once, while I was just standing. Bf thinks that she's just not used to her new environment. I believe it's because of her unspayed status. I read that unaltered rabbits can get extremely territorial. So I don't know if I should spay her and keep my fingers crossed that she'll become friendly once her ovaries are removed or just find her a new home. But for now, I'm giving her time.

And meet Sheldon. He is 7 weeks old now:


Sheldon is no ordinary rabbit! Sheldon is a shoulder bunny. It's weird since I read an article on the internet that rabbits do not like to be up in high places. We hold him in our arms, then he quickly climbs up onto our shoulder and makes himself comfy there. Sheldon is super sweet. Unlike Penny, Sheldon does not tense up or shy away. I saw him binky (rabbit version of frapping) in his cage. :) His left ear will become floppy when he gets older. I like to think of it as the reverse ear puberty, since corgis' ears stand up when they grow older...

I caught a video of Ein (and Brian of course) giving Penny a piece of his mind after she charged at him the first day we brought her home. Ein usually does not "talk" inside the house, unless he's gargling with Brian. In the video, it seems like Ein only "talked" after I asked him what he thought of Penny. So, please disregard my repeated questionings. And yes, bf and I named them after the characters in The Big Bang Theory.

Corgi Fur for Gulf Oil Spill

No, it's not a tribble...

It's the result of Ein and Brian's Furminator session.

We'll be sending it off to The Matter of Trust, so they can turn it into booms to help clean up the oil spill. I will probably wait a week to see if I can collect more. Since it's shedding season for the corgis, why not put all that fur to good use?

And now a message from Captain Planet...(well, not really...but let's just pretend he said it!)

Updates on Brian

Instead of writing a new blog for each day, I'll keep this entry updated with main points each day that passes by on Brian's eye condition with meds. Pictures will not be pretty, so please proceed with caution. For lengthier updates, please refer to my discussion over at mycorgi.

Day 1: 3/21/10

This is the day that we visited the vet. Prescribed anti-inflammatory/anti-bacterial eye drops.

Day 3: 3/23/10

Eye seems to be opening up. Still a bit squinty and blue.

Day 4: 3/24/10

Squinting and cloudy, blue eye, with dark colored discharge.

Day 5: 3/25/10

Same as day 4, squinting and cloudy, blue eye, with dark colored discharge.

Day 6: 3/26/10


Opaque blue eye, swelling is 4 times the size of a normal eyeball, and yellow-green discharge. Went to the eye vet. Prescribed, anti-biotics, anti-inflammatory, pain killer, and glaucoma meds.

Day 7: 3/27/10

Swelling grows worse. Little bit of blood in the evening.

Day 8: 3/28/10

Thick blood with some pus when I woke up @ 11a.m. What an unpleasant sight to wake up to! Swelling seems to have gone down a little though, probably because of the bleeding.

Day 9: 3/29/10

Eye vet visit. No discharge when I woke up. Brian's attitude seems like it's back to normal: perky, trotting, arrooo-ing. I missed his aroo-s! Made me smile, nice to see him at least moving around with a bit of energy that I haven't seen in 8 days. Eye is still blue, with "inflamed" red blood vessel. Swelling has drastically gone down, inflammation has increased, says eye vet. Eye pressure is below normal. As for the bleeding, eye vet believes his eye has ruptured. Eye vet is really wanting to enucliate his eye- I disapprove. Planning to see 2 other eye vets.

Day 10: 3/30/10

Went to the eye vet that my vet referred me to for a 2nd opinion. The pressure was 9 on his left eye and 17 on his right eye. Did not see any punctures or anything on the eye ball. He believes if it was trauma, he was hit on top of the eye. He performed a fluorescein eye stain and and tonometry. He also said that enucleation is the best option. His diagnosis: "Panuveitis possibly due to trauma. Eye has severe inflammation and there has been some bleeding at the top. With such a severe inflammation the chance of recovering vision is very unlikely. There is a strong chance that the eye will remain painful and probably develop glaucoma which is also painful. If so then removal of the eye is the most reasonable treatment for a blind and painful eye."

Day 11: 3/31/10
Eye looks the same as yesterday, refer to picture above. Eye is still opaque blue with inflamed blood vessel on top. Brian's barking, aroo-ing and running around. Since Ein is afraid of Brian's e-collar, he avoids him. Brian chased Ein around the house, developing into a mini frap session. Then Ein ran under the bed and Brian couldn't fit and he let out a grumble. It was kinda sad but cute :)

Day 12: 4/1/10

Eye still looks the same. Eye is still opaque blue with inflamed blood vessel on top. Brian's barking, aroo-ing and running around. What a lil trooper Brian is.

Day 13: 4/2/10
Same as above.

Day 14: 4/3/10
Same as above.

Day 15: 4/4/10
Same as above.

Day 16: 4/5/10

Same as above.

Day 17: 4/6/10
Same as above. We took Brian's e-collar off since bf thought it was not needed. Brian didn't fuss with his eye at all! Brian is now free from the cone of shame.

Day 18: 4/7/10

Day 20: 4/9/10
Same as above. Went to the dog park for the first time since his eye issue. Brian had fun running around, herding this one dog.

Day 21: 4/10/10
Same as above. Completely finished with meds.

Same as above. We went to a mini corgi meetup. Brian had fun playing :)


Day 23: 4/12/10

Day 24: 4/13/10

Eye color seems to be changing back to his original eye color, brown! I really hope that the eye color change means that he'll be able to regain eye sight.

Day 25: 4/14/10
Brian: 21.5 lbs @ 8 months old.

We went to the vet today and the vet said Brian looks comfortable. She shined a light in his eye and says there's a scratch on the eye. The eye has shrunk, and it's become a seeth(forgot the term?), which is like a little hard marble. What she believes is that trauma occurred, then secondary glaucoma (elevated pressure, then secondary glaucoma went away, then blindness.

She said that secondary glaucoma can cause blindness in 8-10 hours(?) The brown of the eye is returning because the swelling has gone down, and the swelling is what made it blue and cloudy. She won't perform any dye test or pressure test, because we basically know that the eye has become blind.

So she believes the enucleation of the eye is the best option for his comfort; and to be on the safe side IF the eye becomes infected and swells up again.

They printed out an estimate and turns out to be $710.60. It got lowered from $955.50 since the vet believes that a biopsy is now not necessary because it's not cancerous, hereditary, etc. Just trauma.

So from what the vet told me, bf and I have concluded that we'll keep his eye...since it's due to trauma, there shouldn't be any chance of this happening again. And since he's already blind in the eye, it'll be as if he had the enucleation. If it DOES swell up or if Brian seems uncomfortable, then we will go for the enucleation of the eye.

She commented on how Brian is such a good boy, since corgis are usually snippy haha.

Vital by Freshpet - Sample Review

I was interested in trying out Vital by Freshpet after reading Julo and Theo's experience with it. Thanks Julo! :) So after getting chosen to receive free samples of Freshpet's food in exchange for a review on my blog, here is our review.

Vital by Freshpet is fresh, meat based recipes that are grain-free. Their food is gently cooked (so it's not raw), and I love the fact that each recipe consists of 80% (or more) meat. Grains are considered welcome in my book, so I wasn't jumping for joy when I read that it was grain-free. However, I do appreciate that it is free of fillers such as wheat, corn, soy and potatoes.

Vital provides a fresh and convenient alternative to raw feeding and home cooking regimens. I have never fed my dogs food rolls (or wet food) before trying Vital, so this was quite an interesting experience!

Presenting, the chicken, beef, salmon and egg recipe:



I gave Ein and Brian this recipe first. I placed it on a cutting board and sliced the amount that I needed. The roll's packaging was marked in 1/4th's, which was convenient! Then I diced it up into smaller pieces, placed the food in the bowl, then set it down for my shark-like corgis that were circling around, waiting for food.

The fresh, meaty aroma of Vital's food makes Brian salivate:


There was no hesitation at all in eating it! They just dove right on in:

Ein ate faster than he usually does with his old food, Canidae All Life Stages. And of course, Brian gulped his food down with the same amount of vigor as he usually does. After they finished their portions in lightning speed, they sniffed all around the kitchen floor to see if there were any stray bits lying around. Ein even got up on his hind legs to check if there was more on the counter, which is where I prepared the food. (I wish I caught it on camera!)

I think Ein and Brian loved them all the same. My favorite is the chicken, beef, salmon and egg recipe as I like the wide variety of meat provided. I love that I can actually see the the meat, fruits, and vegetables that go into Vital's food. Bf saw the food and said, "I don't like that the dogs are eating better than us!"

Another positive, Ein and Brian digested the food well as their poops were solid, yay!

The only downside to the food is that we went through the rolls really quickly. My boys are ~20 lbs. each so one 2 lb. roll lasted us 2 days. Definitely won't be pretty on my college student wallet status at the moment. However, Vital would be my corgis' main diet in an instant if I had extra money (or free Vital for a lifetime would work too :P )!

All in all, Ein, Brian, and I fell in love with Vital and they give Vital 4 paws up!...And also 2 thumbs up from me :)

Day 4- Update on Brian

It's day 4 since Brian developed his cloudy eye. It seems like Brian loves his eye drops. We put a drop in his eye and then he gets all excited and sniffs at the drop container, as if he wants more. Then I give him a treat :) His behavior is normal, no pawing at his eye. He still kind of squints his affected eye, but not as much he did 3 days ago. See below:

I'll take a picture of his eye today and upload it by the end of the day--or I'll save it for another update. Brian's eye is still cloudy, blue, and discharge-y. It seems like it's getting better, but I don't know.

Even though the vet told me that nothing is wrong, I'm still worrying incessantly and researching online about what it could be. There are several eye conditions that seem to make a match but none of them have the exact symptoms. But I think I need to just stop and let the eye drops do its magic, since I'm trying to keep myself calm.

Cloudy eye scare

Note to self: Brian= 20.5lbs @ 7 months and 1 week.

My Brian has had eye discharge and was somewhat squinting with his left eye for 3 days. The squinting would come and go. Bf said that he's fine, just give it time. So I reluctantly gave it time. But today, when I woke up, I found his left eye to be discharge-y and cloudy. I panicked, afraid that he was going blind in one eye!

So for a peace of mind, we rushed him to the vet today and she performed intra-occular pressure: numbed his eye, tested the pressure of his eye by poking it with a special tool. She also performed fluorescein eye stain to check if there were any scratches on his eye, etc.

Results? Nothing seemed wrong. She determined that it might be some sort of trauma to the eye as the white of his eye was a bit red.

She prescribed Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone Opthalmic Suspension (anti-bacterial/anti-inflammatory eye drops). One drop, twice a day for 7-10 days. 7 days if it's better that day. We were asked to return if it's not better after 10 days.

I'm guessing the trauma might be from Ein and Brian playing, as Ein sometimes licks Brian's face/eyes, sometimes accidentally poking his eye(s) with his silly nose. Who knows...but I kind of laugh because it's like we went to the vet to make me feel better instead of Brian, who is perfectly fine.

New bed!

Ein got a new bed from Costco a couple of days ago. It's reversible...and pretty big! There's a fabric side for the hotter days and a fuzzy side for the cooler days.

Originally, bf and I wanted to get a bed for Brian since he was sleeping on Ein's old puppy bed. The foam inside was all torn up from them chewing on it, but that was expected. It seemed like he really liked Ein's bed since he would fall asleep on it sometimes and he would look sooo comfy and cute!

So, we decided that once Brian is past the puppy teething stage, he would level up to a nicer bed. And we decided it was time. So we..er..bf threw out Ein/Brian's torn up puppy bed (I wanted to keep it for memory's sake...or in case we get a third puppy hehe), gave Brian Ein's blue and white striped bed, and gave Ein the new brown bed.

They're over the argument now of course, since the beds are now situated at their sleeping spots. :)
