Naomi Creature Paintover & Notes

Hi Naomi,

Here is a paintover from Jerad and some notes I gathered for your design.

Two of the thing to always keep in mind as you design is:

1) The main perspective & scale that the viewers are going to see you design (know what POV you are designing for)

2) How can you design your character for the animation to read well.

For movement, research for things that moves in a way that creeps you out. The form always follows function and will be greatly effected by it.

Research will give you some great ideas for shapes and how nature solves the movement problems :)

"The Thing" is a shape shifter and a chameleon. It tries to blend in and when caught it is always in mid transformation at its most aggressive or vulnerable state.

In the original film, the design is a mixture of dog, insects (crab), human and Venus fly trap (flower shapes). During the transformation there is always a key ingredient that dominate the design so it is recognizable.

This helps the viewers to relate to the design and to know what to expect.

Hope these tips will help!!
Here is a larger version of the Hermit Crab anatomy ref. You can use a mixture of multiple animals to create an unique mix. (EX: 60% Hermit Crab, 30% Snail, 10% Human, etc.)
Carlo has some great examples from his blog site. There is a nice variety of texture from hard to soft surface and a very nice staging of simple versus complex to create a clear read for and animation movement. There is also a strong shape for focal point to help lock your eye into the design.
