This morning I took a snap of the sun at it's most southern rise.
It climbed over the horizon between the mailboxes and the hydro pole. I'll watch in the coming days as it snail paces toward the mailboxes.
And so winter begins. I've changed my car tires to winter treads and charged my snow blower's battery. The pantry and freezer are well stocked. Winter, I'm ready for ya!
Before the freeze-up, I rescued a few viola plants from the garden. Last winter the one I brought in bloomed steadily so I'm hoping these will do the same.

One of the winter pleasures here is watching the wildlife. I seldom see the local foxes and coyotes but their tracks in fresh snow is unmistakable. Feeder birds aplenty enliven the backyard. The Red-Bellied Woodpecker has again turned up. She has been arriving alone for the past several winters and staying until Spring.
An Eastern Screech Owl has again been using the roost box for a winter refuge and larder. And a Northern Shrike has been keeping the little birds on guard.
As for inside entertainment, there is knitting, music, movies and YouTube videos.
My hearing is still pretty good but I sometimes misinterpret what I hear. Yesterday I was watching a video of two British men chatting. They had very strong Yorkshire type accents.
One guy said he was keeping fit with "...diets and of course the gym."
My brain thought he said, "...diets and of course the gin." Ha!
Anyway, 2025 will soon fade into history. For the most part, my friends and family have faired well. This year's low point was my brother's trip and fall which broke his hip. The high point was a lovely visit from my Nova Scotian cousins. Life is ever textured!

Ellie Mae, you look so comfortable and contented, as you should be. Let the true spirit of Christmas visit your home and bring love and happiness to everyone there. Fond greetings from Jean, where we don't have snow or Red Cardinals, but brilliant Rata flowers, sand and surf, and hopefully warm days.
ReplyDeleteYour rata flowers, sand and surf sound like paradise, Jean! And I've been lucky enough to have camped under Southern Cross skies. Spectacular!!! I do hope yourself, Hugh and family are well and enjoying the good things. Is your grandson still visiting Canada? Anyway, happy stitching and a Happy Christmas and New Year to you guys in beautiful NZ. ❤️❤️🦉
DeleteHi Florence, it's so nice to see you again. I've missed your stunning photography (and Ellie Mae of course). If we don't talk again soon, Merry Christmas. ❤️
ReplyDeleteHi Doug! I've been following your posts and feel sorry that Long Covid is reluctant to give up its grip on you. Also glad that you are managing some good eats and fun with your friends. Thanks for the Christmas greeting and of course I wish you the same as well as a happier and healthier 2026. ❤️❤️🦉
DeleteA lovely uplifting post!
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you Jennifer! Of course I've been following your posts of family holiday plans and backyard fauna. By Joseph Brian's standards, my decorations would be considered 'austere'. Ha!
DeleteHi Florence, so nice to see your post! Your first photo is so beautiful! I love watching the progression of the sun thru the winter. You have such an unobstructed view, trees tend to block mine for part of it. I am glad you have so many critters around to enjoy. Fresh snow makes a great canvas for their tracks. We seem to be having a fox cutting thru our yard most nights. Ellie Mae is gorgeous as always. I hope you have a lovely holiday season Florence!❤️❤️
ReplyDeleteSo good to hear from you, Robin! A reward for the little time it takes to toss a few pics and paragraphs onto my old blog site. Not much happening here really, but I'm reluctant to stop posting entirely. Hoping I can scrape up enough energy to use the old snowshoes this winter. No doubt you and Chuck will get in some quality hikes before Spring. Anyway, thanks for the shout out and I in turn wish all good things for you and yours. ❤️❤️🦉
DeleteAnother lovely post, Florence. Thanks for sharing your lovely photos-your home looks so snug and cosy and coloured lights do brighten the darkness beautifully. I just tramped my trails in sun but with a wind and low temps so got a bit of a chill. The house is never warmer or more welcoming than when that happens. I think you feel similarly. Take Care, J
ReplyDeleteYou sure are right about the house seeming extra warm and welcoming after a tramp outside. Especially the dear old couch after shovelling snow. Ha! By the way, last year Barred Owls moved into my woodlot. I could hear them calling in the summer and saw one hunting along my field trail. I can quit being jealous of your's now. ❤️❤️🦉
DeleteBeautiful photos. Capturing that exact moment the sun hits its lowest point on the horizon makes the official start of winter feel so tangible. There is a deep satisfaction in having the winter tires on, the pantry stocked, and those rescued violas ready to bring some life inside during the dark months. That hearing mix-up between the gym and gin is absolutely hilarious and honestly, keeping fit with gin might actually make the freezing weather a little more bearable. Watching that beautiful sleeping cat dream of spring is the perfect cozy image to hold onto while we wait for the sun to slowly start tracing its way back.
ReplyDeleteHi Florence, goodness, a long time since we have spoken! How are you doing? How are things in your gardens? We are chugging along here. Lots of gardening right now along with hiking and day trips. A few doctor appointments thrown in, getting older is so wonderful!🙄 I hope you and Ellie Mae are well.❤️
ReplyDeleteGood to hear from you, Robin! Hope your doctor appointments are only for minor issues. As for me, I've age appropriate health. Stiffness if I sit too long, that sort of thing. I turn 80 this summer so have to take my first senior driving test which is mandatory in Ontario. Had a sad winter as my dear brother died suddenly from a massive heart attack. He was 87. Am left with one sibling. She is 95, enjoys many interests and remains remarkably independent. My other close family member, of course, is Ellie Mae. She disappeared for six days in the dead of winter. I thought a predator had taken her as she was not a wanderer. Then, she suddenly reappeared. Unharmed and not particularly hungry. A real mystery as it was very cold, and I have no close by neighbours. Anyway, am glad to know you and Chuck are enjoying day trips and the seasons treasures. Thank you for the catch up. Hugs. ❤️❤️🦉
DeleteFlorence, thanks for getting back to me. My condolences on your brothers passing.❤️❤️ Ellie Mae!😲 How terrifying for you Florence! How lovely your sister is still so strong and vital. My sister’s son is getting married in August so we will be heading down to Tillsonburg to the wedding. We are staying on for a few extra days so we can spend sometime with my sister and her family. We have lived in different cities a good distance apart since 1986 so I am really looking forward to this time. Take care Florence! ❤️❤️
DeleteFlorence, forgive me for eavesdropping on you & Robin but I was on your site earlier to revisit some favorite photos, and saw your recent exchange. Just wanted to say how sorry I am about the loss of your brother, and how much I miss your presence on the web. I'm very glad Ellie Mae is still with you, and if you ever decide to blog again, I'll be the first one to welcome you back. Well, maybe second to Robin! Take care my dear friend.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice surprise for the 'reach out', Doug! I have been following your posts but have not been leaving comments, partly because your many followers have already expressed my feelings. Was very sorry to hear of all your medical tribulations. As for myself, I had a work related fall and badly broke my right arm's radius bone. An operation secured the pieces with a plate and pins. Will be in a cast for at least another six weeks. Bummer!!! As for Ellie Mae, I now think she spent those 6 days of disappearance hunting mice in the barn. I guess she was getting bored with canned cat food. ❤️❤️🦉
DeleteI am so sorry about your arm, that sounded awful! Just wanted to let you know I'm glad to hear from you Florence! And love that Ellie Mae! ❤️❤️
DeleteFlorence, I am so sorry about your fall!!❤️❤️ How are you making out taking care of yourself, Ellie Mae and your home?? I hope you have some help. Take care!❤️❤️
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks for the sympathy, Robin! My nieces and nephews and EXCELLENT neighbours, have been spoiling me. I do miss knitting and playing the piano though. Maybe this winter I can get back to that. Outdoor projects will likely have to wait until Spring. Ellie Mae wonders why I have stopped grooming her. That, also, will have to wait for my arm to heal. This misadventure sure makes one focus on priorities. ❤️❤️🦉
DeleteGlad you have so many wonderful people around you!❤️
