a message about buying original art & crafts vs. retail items

good morning dearest reader,

I just came across this post on Facebook and wanted to share it with you.  I'd like to add crafts to this statement as many talented craftspeople are truly artists at what they create.

--- from Russell Gordon ... " When I see all these beautiful & thoughtful, original paintings my artist friends post here on FB & elsewhere, knowing the amount of craft & love that went into each piece, watercolors, gouaches, oils, drawings, available often for surprisingly low prices, I am simply stunned that there are people standing in line at box stores to buy ubiquitous cartloads of tomorrow's landfill who would never think to buy original artwork. Folks, if it has a barcode... it has no soul. Buy something real with your hard earned $$. Buy original artwork. Chances are you know an artist."

Feather accessories: Your opinion is needed

good morning dear reader,

I loved feather earrings in the 80's when I was a teenager.  Loved them!!  I'm happy the feather accessory trend is back.  Are you?  I bought a bunch of feathers (all natural, some dyed, no synthetic) and will be making some feather hair extensions and feather earrings for the craft show I do annually in December.

Currently I'm wearing feathef hair extensions. I love that I can wash, blow dry, curl them. I have a tendancy to change the ones I'm wearing every few weeks however they can last for months.

Can you please help me decide which I should focus on creating for my upcoming show?
 * Would you purchase and/or wear feather hair extensions, earrings or both?
 *  Would you give either or both as a gift?

Your opinion matters to me.  Thanks in advance for helping me out.
I hope you have a beautiful day filled with light and love.

tomorrow is National Coming Out Day

good evening dearest reader,

Tomorrow is National Coming Out Day.  I hoping we can all take a moment out to think of all the young adults struggling with coming out to their friends & family.  There are some older adults still hiding in the closet also.  Please think of those who have died because of who they love.  Gay bashing & bullying is still prevailent in our society & it is sad.  Love is Love.  You fall in love with a person, not their gender.  I am out & I am Proud.  I have loved my girl Dawn for over 30 years.

We hid in the closet for a very long time.  I know there are still people out there who will hate me because of who I love.  I can't change them but I can certainly change how their negativity affects me.  I surround myself with love & positive people.  Anyone else has no place in my world.

9-11 living 50 miles north of Ground Zero

hello dearest reader,
(this is a repost of the blog post I wrote last year about 9-11)

God Bless America, God Bless all those who were lost that day, God Bless our Troops & all the brave military men & women who have lost their lives fighting for our Freedom & God Bless those left behind.

Today as we remember the events of 9-11, I'd like to share with you my experience. We were living in NY at the time, 50 miles from ground zero and Dawn was working in Manhattan. We lost many local people that day, office workers, firemen, etc.

It was a beautiful morning, full of sunshine & blue skies. I was working for the Telephone Company. Dawn had been working in Manhattan for about a year. She always called me when she got out of the subway on her walk to the office so I knew she arrived to her job safely. She was working in mid-town 57th Street & Lexington Ave. She called early that day, from Port Authority to say she just heard a plane hit the World Trade Center. I had not heard anything about it so I went on the Internet to check it out. Dawn's subway train arrived & she said she'd call back when she got to the station at the Citibank building. I called my Mother & she said she was watching the news & it was most likely an accident. As I was speaking with my Mother, the second plane crashed into the other tower. She screamed. I started freaking out a bit.

I quickly brought up a live news feed on the computer. Word had gotten around the office & as a Telephone Company, we were immediately put into high alert. We had to protect all lines of communications as our office was a hub for NYC. Dawn called once she got back on the streets. She could look straight down Lexington Ave & see all of the billowing smoke. Everyone and I mean everyone on the street was looking up. She quickly walked (ran) to her office. As soon as she entered, her building was on lock-down. It's a famous building (The Galleria Building) and no one knew exactly what was going on. All anyone knew was that Our Country was under attack. Another plane hit the Pentagon, another plane down in PA. The horror, the sadness, the rage.

As news spread that all of Manhattan was on lockdown, everything was shut down...no one in, no one out...I was panicking. My Lord, how will Dawn get out? Is she safe? Are any of us safe? What else can happen?

I kept in contact with her as best I could over the phone. Many people could not get through on the phone lines because many of the phone lines in NYC were destroyed. Maybe because I was at the Telco, maybe because angels watch over us, who knows...I had a clear line to her office phone. I patched in her parents so they could know their girl was alright.

One thing led to another & Dawn was able to get a ride out of Manhattan, in a borrowed car, with her CEO. She was back in Orange County by late afternoon. Whew, my Dawnie was home, safe and sound. Shaken & stirred certainly, emotionally & physically drained, but Home...Safe...Alive.

When I got home, we put on the news. She had yet to see any of the coverage. She cried, I cried, we cried. Heartache...shock. That evening, all of the planes were still grounded. We were sharing a quiet moment when all of a sudden we hear fighter planes roaring overhead. Immediately we both went into panic mode...What is happening? Are those our planes? Are we being bombed? We are at war, we are going to die, now, tonight. We clung to each other...I called my parents again. They said that military planes would be flying all night to protect us. Neither of us slept much that night.

The next day, Dawn & I both stayed home from work. Numb at this point, we tried to comprehend what had happened. We thought of all the people we know that worked in Manhattan. We knew there were many locals who were NYC Firemen. In the days & weeks to come, we found out many from our county & surrounding areas were lost that day.

When Dawn went back to work on Thursday & for months afterwards, she was saddened by the sights of the City. On her bus ride into Manhattan, when she came around the corner to enter Lincoln Tunnel, she could see all of the smoke rising off of the island. The smoke kept filling the skyline for what seemed to her like forever.

Another heart wrenching sight that affects Dawn even today was all of the signs people hung looking for lost loved ones. Handmade & computer printed, these signs were plastered on walls, fences & poles the length of her commute from Port Authority to her office. Hundreds of faces on these signs...pleas for help..." Have you seen my..." Mother, Father, Friend, Sister, Brother etc. Prayer candles lined the streets under the signs...bouquets of flowers too. Day after day she walked past these missing person posters, some smeared from the rain, some torn & tattered but none removed. All hung in honor of someone who was loved, someone who was missed, someone who might not ever come home again. As I write this my heart aches as I remember this time in our Nation's history.

My life changed that day as I'm sure yours did to. Because we lived so close to ground zero, the event & the lives lost took a great toll on us and our local communites. As the weeks went by, when we were out & about, we'd see signs hanging with messages such as "I survived 9-11 Tower 2 68th floor" ... or... "My firefighter son died on 9-11". The newspapers eventually printed lists of those lost by town & by county. So sad, so very sad.

Within a year, the company Dawn worked for moved their national headquarters out of Manhattan & she got a new job in NJ. In 2005 we moved to NC and we love living here on the coast.

Do I miss NY? Yes I do. Very much so sometimes. I miss my friends & loved ones still living there. I miss the City in all it's glory...the museums, buildings, the people, the park....the electric spark you feel in the City that never sleeps. NYC is still a beautiful city filled with wonderful people. I've never felt afraid when I visited Manhattan, the atmosphere & the feeling you get when you are there is amazing... the City is alive & thriving, still, despite the fact that evil people tried to bring it down.

September 11th needs to be made a National Day of Rememberance. We must NEVER forget. God Bless America, God Bless all those who were lost that day, God Bless our Troops & all the brave military men & women who have lost their lives fighting for our Freedom & God Bless those left behind.

What was your experience on 09-11?
Wishing for you a day & a lifetime filled with light and love.

Movie Review: "The Lovely Bones"

good afternoon dear reader,

I rented this movie from Netflix and watched it twice.  It's one of those films when you watch it a second time, you see and understand more.  As with all my movie reviews, no big spoilers here. Just a brief summary of the film as well as my rating.

"The Lovely Bones" (2009) was directed by Peter Jackson and stars Mark Wahlberg, Michael Imperioli (Christo-fa from the Soprano's), Rachel Weisz & Saorise Ronan. It is an excellent film.  Visually stunning, colorful & imaginative this movie is reminiscent of "American Beauty" and "What Dreams May Come."  Susan Sarandon is marvelous as the maternal Grandmother.  Stanley Tucci was a major player in the film however I don't want to give anything away.

Set in the 1970s, the costumes, set designs & hairstyles were dead on to what that time period looked and felt like.  Some scenes were filmed with a yellowish cast which is what my old photos from the 70s look like now that they are fading.  I very much related to these aspects of the film.

Saorise Ronan plays 14 year old Susie Salmon.  This girl can ACT.  I predict she will have a long & brilliant career, as long as she stays away from all of the "young hollywood" pitfalls that engulf so many young talented people.  I hope she takes the route of Dakota Fanning and stays true to herself.

The movie centers on Susie & her Father (Mark W). There are some very sweet & poignant moments where the love a Father has for his Daughter are depicted perfectly.  Small things, like sharing a hobby or just talking.  I'm lucky to have a very close relationship with my Father so I could relate well to this aspect of the characters. Well written, the storyline flows in a manner which intermingles realism with the surreal.  The plot has twists and turns which lead to an ending which left me in tears.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this film a 9.  Have you seen "The Lovely Bones"?  What is your opinion?

I went to visit my therapists today - Sunset Beach & the Atlantic Ocean

good evening darling readers,

This morning I was searching for a beach quote to put as my FB status and I found this one.   “It’s hard for me to put into words why I like the beach so much. Everything about it is renewing for me, almost like therapy...Beach Therapy” ~ --Amy Dykens

Wow, that's how I feel about the beach...so I decided to go visit my therapists - Sunset Beach and the Atlantic Ocean.  I'm blessed to live about 6 miles from there.  I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I'd live near the ocean.  I also never expected life to take the twists and turns it has which is how I ended up living on the beautiful Carolina coast.

It was 78°F, sunny, with a beautiful breeze.  I walked along the edge of the sea...the water was a bit chilly but my feet got used to it quickly.  There were a lot of shore birds scurrying about as the high tide was receeding. and the air...the air smelled wonderful - fresh, clean and a bit sweet. ahhh I wonder, does Heaven smell like this?  It is nothing at all like the beach air in NJ.

My therapists - Sunset Beach and the Atlantic Ocean.  Both have a transcendental quality to them.  The soft sand & salt water relax me.  The waves come in at regular intervals like a heartbeat and I can feel a small part of the vast energy of the ocean as I walk along the shoreline.  The breeze and the bright sun both cool and warm my skin on this early spring day.  Almost immediatley my mind clears of any worries or concerns.  The waves whisper to me that these things will take care of themselves and if not, I can think about them later.

The beach is fairly quiet and I can walk a long ways before passing another person.  The shorebirds accompany me on my walk.  As always, my faithful friend Jonathan (Livingston Seagull) is there.  He is one of the big white seagulls and he walks near me for a little bit.  I'm sure I'll see him again when I'm relaxing in my beach chair as he loves to fly above me.

I feel at one with my God, the Earth and the Sea.  I always catch myself talking to my angels, meditating & praying without even thinking about it...it just happens.  Sometimes the solution to a problem or a creative idea just pops into my head, like it had always been there, just waiting to be uncovered like a half buried seashell.

When I turn around to go back to my beach chair I usually stop by the waters edge and gaze out at the vastness of the ocean for a while.  I feel so small in comparison.  I breathe deeply as the waves once again whisper to remind me that we are all a special part of an infinite Universe.  My soul sings as I recall the fact that I am a soul currently residing in a body, not a just body that has a soul...which reminds me of the lyrics "Even scientists say everything is just light, not created, destroyed but eternally bright".  After all, once energy is created it cannot be destroyed and souls are energy.  I'm the kind of person that can totally mesh science with spirituality however that is a discussion for another day dear reader.

Until next time, I wish you peace, love & good health.

Art House Co-op Sketchbook Project 2011 - on tour now

good morning dearest readers,

I participated in the Art House Co-op Sketchbook Project 2011.  What is that you ask?  Well it's basically similar to a concert tour but done with sketchbooks.  here is the description from their website:

"Thousands of sketchbooks are being exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the country. After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be cataloged and available for the public to view. We sent 28839 artists from 94 countries blank sketchbooks. Just under 10,000 books were returned completed to us — all of which will be on display. The tour starts February, 2011."

The sketchbooks are currently in Austin, TX.  I received a text message stating someone viewed my sketchbook.  I was super excited to discover it was one of my art friends from Facebook.  How cool is that?  If you have a moment dear reader, you can check out my sketchbook "Derigibles & Submersibles" as well as my Mother's "It must be...Elvis" here.  I hope you have a wonderful day !!

I apologize for being M I A...Keep Calm & Carry On

good morning dearest reader,

I apologize for the haitus from blogging.  I've had a rough few months.  But you know me, I keep calm & carry on as best I can.

Right after Thanksgiving, our niece & nephew & their baby moved back to NY.  I won't get into the details however it was very sudden & it upset us terribly as we were looking forward to watching the baby grow up.  In December I had chest pain again and was back in the hospital.  New Years came and went without a hitch.  Then mid-January I got the flu (even thought I've had the flu shot) which then proceeded to go into pneumonia (yup had that shot too).  I'm still recovering from the pneumonia...coughing, weezing & weak/tired.  Again, I keep calm and carry on.

You may wonder how I can stay positive & calm during rough times.  Truly, it is by the Grace of God and all the love & goodness in the Universe.  I almost died in 2003.  The SARS virus damaged my heart & I'm left with a weakened, damaged heart along with other major medical problems.  Do I sit around & cry "why me"?  nope.  what good would that do?  there are always people out there sicker or worse off than me.  God saved me...I'm a living miracle as I was not expected to live more than 3 months. Knowing God & knowing He saved me helps me to stay positive.

I actively try to embrace the positive energy in the Universe while pushing away negative vibes & influences.  Am I always successful?  no.  I get wrapped up people & their problems at times.  This is always disasterous for me as it puts me in a bad place.  When I feel myself getting pulled down by others negativity, I back away to protect myself.  There are way more wonderful positive people in the world than there are "liars fakers haters users abusers narcissists arrogant ignorant disrespectful jealous negative fools".  When I realize I'm dealing with someone in the latter group, I run for the hills. lol Actually what I do is cut them out of my life.  If that is not possible then I avoid them as much as I can.

I do get very depressed at times, I have days on end when I don't want to get out of bed.  Over time I work my way out of the recurring depressions as best I can, I've learned it's part of having chronic illnesses...art helps tremendously as does surrounding myself with those who truly love me, creative people & those who shine their bright light into the world.

If you're not familiar with the slogan "Keep Calm and Carry On" you can read all about it here.  Well that's all for now dearest reader,  Thanks for reading my update.  My blogging haitus is over & I'm looking forward to your comments & interactions with you as you follow me on my creative journey in life.

Wishing for you a day filled with light and love.
