What Are The Early Warning Signs That Your Hive Is Preparing To Swarm?

If this is your first or second year in keeping bees, you probably have realized that there are always challenges.
Many of these challenges are baffling, like your queen started out laying well, but now you cannot find her and you can't find any brood. What the heck do you do now?
Not to mention thousands of varroa destructor mites are roaming through your hive biting your bees and spreading viruses that could potentially kill your bees in the winter. You do not realize it because you cannot see them that well.
Not to mention the other issues of when to add another deep or another super or should you place the super on top of the other super or below it? Or should you use a queen excluder? What do you do if the queen lays eggs in your honey super? When do you need to feed your bees? I hear these questions every day because I mentor over 200 beekeepers around the country through my beekeeping coaching program called BeeTeam6.
This week beekeepers have been sending me their pictures asking me what's happening to their hive. Many report good news, and ask questions about how to deal with healthy and rapidly expanding hives. We will start shipping our very popular Winter-Bee-Kinds next Monday in the order which orders were placed. So people who placed their orders in August will be the first to receive their order.
We are still taking orders for our very popular Winter-Bee-Kinds. There is no hurry to place them on the hive. In fact, it is best to wait until it is cold and the bees are no longer flying. The candy works best on the hive when temperatures are below 40 degrees (f).
EAS Certified Master Beekeeper began designing and experimenting with the Winter-Bee-Kind a decade ago to reduce winter moisture in the hive and to provide protein, carbohydrates and minerals to the bees in the winter. Mite Control - Wrapping - Feeding - Weird Smelling Hives

Only five days away. Are your bees ready? In this newsletter I'll give you tips on preparing your bees for winter such as mite control, fall and winter feeding, wrapping hives and is the weird hive smell a bad thing?

Our lane is lined on the north side with an abundance of goldenrod. Goldenrod makes your hives smell weird. And yes my hives smell weird! Nectar produced by fall asters will make hives take on a funky smell. Don't panic and jump to the conclusion that you have the dreaded, smelly American foulbrood disease. Probably just a fall crop of goldenrod. Can goldenrod produce a fall honey crop? Not likely. While it is a good source of nectar and pollen to help bees prepare for winter, rarely are bees able to gather and store enough for an abundant crop.

Preparing Bees For Winter - Burns Bees Feeding System
The only way your bees will survive the winter is by having enough bees of winter physiology. Summer bees only live 40 days. However, bees of winter physiology live 4-6 months. Bees that you raise in the fall will be bees you see next spring. But how do you raise bees of winter physiology and when? You must feed your bees in the fall so that the queen can lay an abundance of brood in October. When the queen lays an abundance of eggs in October, those bees will emerge in November and will support the hive through April. To stimulate brood rearing now you must feed your bees with our Burns Bees Feeding System.

It is easy to assume all is well during the summer and fall with our bees. Watching them fly in and out can be misleading.

Many beekeepers observe "lots of bees" flying in and out and assume all is well. However, the bees flying in and out in the summer and early fall have a short life span of about 45 days. For your colony to survive the winter you must carefully manage, control and achieve certain goals and results now in late summer and fall. To achieve a strong survival rate of honey bees we must send healthy bees into the long months of winter along with food. But, these honey bees cannot make it unless they are bees that are of winter physiology. Your summer and early fall bees will likely only live two months at most while winter bees live 4-6 months.
