The Tellus Museum

Our field trip for today:

Fossils, fossils, and more fossils.
Even, yes, that DOES say "Fossil Dinosaur Poop!"

Surprisingly, this was the only one that my kids found frightening. It's a giant turtle. Ok, it's REALLY big, 15 feet across and 11 feet long, but it's still a turtle!

Megalodon teeth, though?

Bring 'em on.

They have a big hands-on play room with all kinds of cool activities.
Elliot was mostly excited to be allowed out of the stroller for a while.

Notice in the picture above, he is standing, without holding on to anything!
He refuses to actually take a step, but I am sure he will be able to as soon as he wants.

Panning for gems. They got to keep all the little chips they found. Rory found quite a lot!

They also got to dig for fossils, both big fake ones, and tiny real ones.

And the best part; they got to keep one fossil each!

Daisy found a sand shark tooth.

Rory's is a mackerel shark tooth.

Daisy was hysterical, holding her dress out of the "sand" to keep it clean. Really just little bits of rubber.

Elliot, no idea what's going on, but smiling for the camera!

Elliot's First Piece of Cake

Elliot is allergic to eggs, so he's never had a real cake. I've been practicing making egg free cakes so I will be ready for his birthday (in 10 days!) and finally found a great recipe (thanks to Kids with Food Allergies).

Rory's Letter

This is Rory's letter to his friend Wes, who recently fell and broke his leg. :( The reason I needed to share this though was that it is the longest thing that Rory has ever written ALL BY HIMSELF! Usually he needs confirmation after every letter that he is spelling or writing things correctly, and needs lots of suggestions on what to say. This one he came up with on his own and wrote on his own! All the spelling was independent, and only one word was incorrect! That's pretty amazing, I think.
It's kind of hard to read here, so here's a transcript:

In Their Words

The other day, Rory looked out the window and saw Grandpa. He announced, "I see Grandpa! He's LAWNING!"

He has also recently figured out division in his head. He told me that if he gets thirty high 5s in karate, he'll have six stripes on his belt. He needs five for each stripe. When I asked him how he figured that out, he just gave me an "isn't it OBVIOUS?" look and said, "I just know."

Yesterday, he saw that there was only half of a cookie left. He said he would split it with Daisy, and they would each have a quarter of a cookie. I don't know where he learned that one either.

Daisy told me this morning, "Actually, Mommy, I have changed my mind. I would like some lemonade." Sometimes my kids have better grammar than I do, lol.

Elliot nods yes and shakes his head no. It's adorable. I don't think he really understands the words yet, but when he hears them, he nods along....and when he's getting into something he's not supposed to, he starts shaking his head as soon as he sees me watching him, even before I say no.

He's also started calling ALL babies "Daisy." Even his own reflection, lol.
