two galapagos pictures for dennis to see

i went to the galapagos islands with the macalester geo dept in january 2003. here are two photos from the trip. i know most of you have seen the pics, but dennis hasn't...unfortunately, i can't post more...i don't have a great scanner and i don't have many good shots (my camera was begining to break--incentive to go back?)...up there is a galapagos tortoise on isabella.
and a baby sea lion on a beach somewhere...have you seen "master and commander?" because i think this picture was taken on the same island where that movie was filmed.... i forget which island, though. this picture is actually from a series of the baby twisting its head upside-down to sniff me and my camera.

i have been back in michigan for a day. you know, i thought i would be super sad to be back because nyc was just very good. i am actually psyched that the school year has started because it is my last year and i will be able to GET OUT next spring. and then i can do whatever i want! i wanted to end my summer blogging by sharing some photos from nyc that weren't developed right away--and i have also included the last photo i took there. none of the images are particularly wonderful, but anyway

i think it's cute even though it's a tad blurry--plus, you can see bikini butt in the background (i do have another one of this family, but the boy isn't jumping... he does, however, have hello kitty on his pant legs) (15 july 2006)

my first real subway picture

i took this picture in a subway station in the village on saturday night at about midnight. if you can't tell, the guy has a kitten in his lap. he is conversing with some of the girls about how much he loves the kitten and they were giving him money.

things i've seen

i took another picture of this guy a couple seconds after i had taken this one and he was covered in birds....he had three on his arm and one on his shoulder, like a pirate. it reminds me of home alone 2 with the scary bird lady, who, in the end, turns out to be completely misunderstood and not so scary afterall. today, i had a guy walk up to me on the great big hill in central park (it's great, i go there pretty much every day after work), show me his drivers license and ask for money. that was great. and yesterday on the subway, i saw a guy wearing puffy renaissance style pants and carrying a lute. that reminded me of ignatius j. reilly and paradise vendors, and now i want to go to new orleans.

i've also smelled lots of things...and most are really unpleasant--and prominent in the subway stations--but some scents are nice...like pizza or anything else food related. i've also gotten to hear lots of great things, such as crazy banters by crazy people about how everybody in the world sucks, street performers singing about how much they love the jesus, and indian music in central park every sunday. i've also met some people. last night, i had the priviledge of sitting next to a guy on the subway who was totally into playing air-bass. i'm having a very fine time here in the big city.

nato, chinatown and the brooklyn bridge

nato is here visiting! he met me at the amnh and we took the subway to chinatown. we went into this one restaurant, but walked out again due to the lack of menu in english and confused looks when he said, "pork?" then we walked around in circles for awhile until we found somewhere to eat, took some pictures and decided we were going to head toward battery park. during our short stay in chinatown, we saw this guy (above). he was selling sheets of hello kitty stickers for a dollar. i know that you may not find this as entertaining as i do (or nato), but let met tell you, this guy made the trip to chinatown totally worth it... he had a really thick ny accent and a cane and in a super deadpan tone, he was saying, "kitty--hello kitty--hello kitty stickers, a dollar. hello kitty stickers, a dollar. you can stick them on your refrigerator, your backpack, your toy box.....only a dollar."
