A general name for silicate minerals, especially clays, with a well-defined sheet structure, e.g. mica group, chlorite group, kaolinite-serpentine Group, smectite, sepiolite, palygorskite, vermiculite, talc, pyrophyllite, brittle mica etc.

The sheet structure is based on the silicate tetrahedra being linked to form 2D sheets.

They are also commonly called sheet silicates.
