Know Your Worth: The Power of Standing Up to Overexploitation at Work By Eric Azibataram

In every professional journey, dedication and diligence are treated as the highest virtues. We are raised to believe that if you put your head down, give your best effort, and sacrifice your personal comfort for the job, success and respect will naturally follow. However, there comes a point where dedication can easily be mistaken for submission. When you repeatedly offer your time, energy, and skill, it is easy for those in authority to focus strictly on their own profit margins while completely disregarding the human cost behind their results.

This reality hit home today during what should have been an ordinary workday. Our official working hours had long passed, yet we found ourselves pushed well beyond six in the evening. Instead of recognizing that extra labor requires fair compensation and respect for basic human limits, leadership expected us to keep working without an extra dime. It was a clear demonstration of how quickly an individual’s time and effort can be taken for granted when profit becomes the sole priority.

What made this situation critical was the choice that lay before us: stay silent and absorb the unfairness, or take a stand. When you fail to set boundaries, people will continually push them, assuming your silence means consent. By coming together with my teammates and firmly stating that we would not continue under unfair conditions, we disrupted a cycle that would have otherwise led to repeated exploitation. Standing our ground forced leadership to pause, look at the matter properly, and back down.

Knowing your worth is not about being confrontational or difficult; it is about self preservation and establishing professional self respect. If you do not define your own value, the world will reduce you to whatever rate or treatment is most convenient for them. No matter where you find yourself working, always remember that your time is irreplaceable. Learn to recognize when boundaries are being crossed, speak up against unfairness, and never let anyone step on you simply because you refuse to advocate for yourself.
