Developer Spotlight: Steve Fenton - His Developer Journey

Developer Spotlight: Steve Fenton — His Developer Journey

Real developers. Real journeys. Real conversations. In this Developer Spotlight, Tom Smith sits down with Steve Fenton for a relaxed conversation about his journey in software development, his experiences in technology, and the ideas and lessons that have shaped his career.

A conversation with Steve Fenton about his journey in software development, his experiences, ideas and lessons learned along the way.

CoderLegion is continuing its new format for Developer Stories — Video Discussion Stories.

Instead of presenting a developer's journey as a written Q&A, this format gives the community a chance to hear directly from developers through relaxed video conversations.

For this Developer Spotlight, Tom Smith sits down with Steve Fenton for a conversation about Steve's journey in technology, his experiences as a software professional, and the perspectives he has developed throughout his career.

Watch the Developer Spotlight

Watch the full conversation with Steve Fenton in the video above.

The conversation gives the CoderLegion community an opportunity to get to know Steve beyond his written posts, professional work and technical contributions.

Meet Steve Fenton

Steve Fenton is a software engineering professional, author and programming architect based in the UK.

He describes himself as a pragmatist, abstractionist and generalizing-generalist, with a broad interest in software development and technology.

Steve is also an Octonaut at Octopus Deploy and has been an active member of the developer community, sharing his experience and perspectives on software development.

A Conversation About the Developer Journey

In this Developer Spotlight, Tom and Steve have a relaxed conversation about Steve's experience in software development and the journey that has shaped his work and perspective.

Rather than treating the conversation like a formal technical interview, the format is designed to let the discussion develop naturally around the person behind the technology.

The conversation gives viewers a chance to hear Steve discuss his experiences, ideas, work and perspectives in his own words.

One of the things that makes these conversations different from a written interview is the opportunity to hear directly from the person behind the developer profile.

Meet the Host: Tom Smith

The conversation is hosted by Tom Smith, a technology writer and AI/LLM specialist who has spent years interviewing technology professionals and writing about the tools and technologies shaping software development.

Tom has conducted thousands of interviews with technology professionals and brings that experience to the Developer Spotlight format.

His approach is conversational rather than formal — giving the guest room to explain their experiences, projects and ideas naturally.

Why We're Starting Video Discussion Stories

Written Developer Stories are a great way to learn about someone's journey.

But video creates a different kind of connection.

You can hear how someone explains an idea, see their personality, and get a better sense of the person behind the profile, projects and articles.

That's what we're hoping to build with Video Discussion Stories.

The format is intentionally relaxed.

There is no requirement for the conversation to feel like a podcast or a formal interview. The goal is simply to give developers an opportunity to talk about their journey, their work and the things they have learned along the way.

Developer Spotlight at CoderLegion

Developer Spotlight is part of CoderLegion's growing Developer Stories initiative.

We're interested in conversations with developers, engineers, technical founders, creators and technology professionals about topics such as:

Developer journeys

Interesting projects

Open source

AI and emerging technologies

Building products

Entrepreneurship

Career experiences

Lessons learned

Challenges developers face

The future of technology

Some conversations may focus heavily on technical work.

Others may explore a product, startup, career journey, open-source project or an interesting idea someone is working on.

The common thread is the person behind the technology.

Want to Take Part?

Would you like to appear in a future CoderLegion Developer Spotlight?

Or perhaps you would like to host a conversation with another developer?

We're looking for developers and community members who would like to participate in future conversations.

If you would like to be interviewed or host an interview, get in touch with the CoderLegion team.

There is no fixed topic or rigid format. Conversations can focus on your developer journey, projects, products, launches, leadership, entrepreneurship, technical experience or anything interesting you're currently building or exploring.

About Steve

Developer Stories is a CoderLegion initiative highlighting the people behind the technology — their journeys, projects, experiences, challenges and ideas.

With Video Discussion Stories, we're expanding that format from written interviews into conversations that let developers share their stories directly.

Every Programmer Has a Starting Point - Here’s Mine

As I continue my journey as a developer, one thing I’ve come to understand is this:

Growth in tech is not a straight line it’s a process of consistency, patience, and learning through challenges.

I didn’t start with everything figured out. Like many developers, I’m still learning and improving every day. But along the way, I’ve picked up lessons that have shaped how I approach programming and problem-solving.

How I Got Into Programming

My journey into programming started with curiosity. I’ve always been interested in how websites and applications work behind the scenes.

That curiosity led me into web development and later backend systems. What started as exploration slowly became a passion for building solutions and solving real problems through code.

Every new concept I learned opened another layer of interest, and I kept building from there.

Challenges I Faced

Like most developers, my journey came with challenges.

One of the biggest was consistency staying focused while balancing learning with other responsibilities. At times, the amount of information felt overwhelming, especially when I moved deeper into backend development and debugging.

Another challenge was confidence. It’s easy to compare your progress with others and feel like you’re behind. But I learned that everyone grows at their own pace, and what matters most is steady improvement.

Debugging was also difficult at first, but over time I learned to see errors as part of the learning process, not failure.

Lessons I’ve Learned

Here are some of the most important lessons from my journey so far:

Consistency matters more than intensity

You don’t need to know everything before you start building

Every developer struggles even the experienced ones

Real growth happens through practice and projects

Patience is just as important as technical skill

My Growth So Far

Looking back, I can see real growth in my journey.

I’ve moved from just learning concepts to applying them in actual projects. I’m becoming more comfortable working across both frontend and backend development, Git workflows, and building structured full-stack applications.

I’m still learning, but I now approach challenges with more confidence and curiosity instead of fear.

My Experience with CoderLegion

Being part of CoderLegion has been a really positive experience for me. It feels like a supportive community where developers can learn, share, and grow together.

I appreciate how it encourages real stories and real learning experiences. It’s motivating to see other developers share their journeys and challenges openly.

It reminds me that I’m not alone in this process we’re all learning and growing together.

Final Thoughts

I’m still on my journey as a developer, but I’ve learned that growth comes from consistency, curiosity, and persistence.

To anyone starting out: don’t rush the process. Start small, keep building, and stay consistent. Every line of code matters.

I’m excited for how far I can still go and the impact I will create through technology.

Simple Cybersecurity Practices You Can Start Today

As I keep learning cybersecurity, one thing has become very clear to me:

Security isn’t just about knowledge it’s about daily habits.

You don’t need to be an expert to start protecting yourself. Small actions, done consistently, can make a big difference.

Here are some simple practices I’ve started applying:

1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Using the same password everywhere is risky. If one account is compromised, others can be too.

I started using stronger and different passwords for important accounts and it made me more conscious of my security.

Tip: Don’t reuse passwords across platforms.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

This adds an extra layer of protection beyond your password.

Even if someone gets your password, they still can’t access your account easily.

Tip: Start with your email and social media accounts.

3. Pause Before You Click

This is one habit that really changed things for me.

Before clicking links or downloading files, I now pause and ask:
“Is this safe? Do I trust the source?”

Tip: If something feels off, don’t rush verify first.

4. Keep Your Devices Updated

Updates are not just for new features they fix security vulnerabilities.

I used to ignore updates, but now I understand how important they are.

Tip: Turn on automatic updates where possible.

5. Be Careful What You Share

Oversharing online can expose personal information that attackers can use.

I’ve become more mindful of what I post and where I post it.

Tip: Think before you share sensitive details.

Encouragement From My Journey

I didn’t start with all these habits at once. I built them gradually.

Cybersecurity is not about doing everything perfectly it’s about doing something consistently.

Start with one habit. Then another. Over time, it becomes part of you.

Up Next

In my next post, I’ll talk about common cyber threats you should know as a beginner and how to recognize them early.

Stay aware, stay intentional, and keep growing
