Building a Smarter useIdle Hook in React: Solving the Short-Timeout Edge Case

Tracking user inactivity in web applications seems straightforward at first. You listen to a few mouse and keyboard events, set a timeout, and toggle state when the timer expires. However, once you start optimizing for performance, things get tricky.

To prevent your app from grinding to a halt during heavy mouse movement, you must throttle the event handlers. But what happens if a developer configures a very short idle timeout—say, for a rapid UI transition or testing? If your throttle interval is static, it can easily clash with the timeout length, causing missed events or inconsistent state transitions.

In the latest release of
react-hook-lab
, we solved this exact problem by introducing dynamic adaptive throttling to our
useIdle
hook.

The Problem with Fixed Throttling

Previously,
useIdle
utilized a fixed throttle duration. If the user moved their mouse rapidly, events were ignored for a set period to save CPU cycles. However, if a developer set a short timeout duration close to or lower than the throttle limit, the hook could miss the final active event and incorrectly report the user as idle.

Furthermore, initializing the tracking state at
0
instead of backdating it meant the hook could experience a sluggish response immediately after mounting.

The Solution: Dynamic Adaptation

To resolve this, we modified
useIdle
to dynamically compute an
effectiveThrottle
. It now ensures the throttle interval is never larger than half of the requested timeout duration:

const effectiveThrottle = Math.min(THROTTLE_MS, Math.floor(timeout / 2));

Additionally, we corrected the initial state of the active tracking reference. By setting it to
-THROTTLE_MS
on mount, the very first user interaction triggers an immediate, unthrottled update.

Practical Code Examples

Here are two ways you can leverage the newly optimized
useIdle
hook in your React applications.

Example 1: Protecting Secure Sessions (Standard Timeout)

For security-sensitive interfaces, you want to warn users before their session expires. With a standard timeout,
useIdle
works efficiently in the background without causing unnecessary re-renders during active scrolling or typing.

import React from "react";
import { useIdle } from "react-hook-lab";

export function SessionTimeoutWarning() {
  // Trigger idle warning after 5 minutes of inactivity
  const isIdle = useIdle(300000);

  return (

      {isIdle ? (

You have been inactive for 5 minutes. Your session will lock soon.

          <button onClick={() => window.location.reload()}>Extend Session

      ) : (

Secure connection active.

      )}

  );
}

Example 2: Interactive Video Player HUD (Short Timeout)

When building a video streaming client, you want to hide the playback controls (HUD) quickly when the user stops moving their cursor. This requires a very short timeout of 2 seconds. Thanks to our dynamic adaptive throttling, this short window no longer glitches out.

import React from "react";
import { useIdle } from "react-hook-lab";

export function VideoPlayerHUD() {
  // Hide controls after 2 seconds of inactivity
  const isControlsIdle = useIdle(2000);

  return (
    <div className="video-container" style={{ position: "relative" }}>

      <div
        className="controls-overlay"
        style={{
          opacity: isControlsIdle ? 0 : 1,
          transition: "opacity 0.3s ease-in-out"
        }}
      >
        Play
        Pause
        01:23 / 05:40

  );
}

Optimizing User Idle Detection in React

Managing user idle states efficiently is critical for performance-heavy applications. In the latest update to
react-hook-lab
, I have refined the
useIdle
hook to provide more granular control over event throttling.

What Changed?

Previously, the throttle mechanism was rigid. To prevent unnecessary re-renders during high-frequency events (like mouse movement), I have updated the logic to use a dynamic throttle window. The hook now calculates
effectiveThrottle
as the minimum of your defined timeout or half the total duration, ensuring responsiveness while keeping the main thread lean.

Implementation Examples

Basic Usage

Simply track when a user is inactive for 5 seconds:

const isIdle = useIdle(5000);

return
{isIdle ? 'User is away' : 'User is active'}
;

Custom Throttle Behavior

The hook now automatically balances the throttle duration based on your timeout setting to prevent performance bottlenecks:

// The hook will now self-adjust the throttle to be
// more aggressive for shorter idle timeouts.
const isIdle = useIdle(1000);

Resources

Optimizing User Idle Detection in React

The Challenge of Responsive Idle Tracking

Tracking user inactivity is essential for modern web applications—whether it's auto-saving drafts, timing out sessions, or pausing resource-heavy animations. However, naïve implementations of activity listeners often lead to performance bottlenecks due to excessive event firing.

In the latest update to
react-hook-lab
, I have refined the
useIdle
hook to implement dynamic throttling, ensuring that your state updates remain performant even during high-frequency user interactions.

What Changed?

The
useIdle
hook now calculates its throttle threshold dynamically based on your defined timeout. By capping the throttle at half the duration of your timeout, we ensure the hook stays responsive while preventing unnecessary render cycles.

Usage Example

Basic usage to track inactivity after 5 seconds:

import { useIdle } from 'react-hook-lab';

const App = () => {
  const isIdle = useIdle(5000);

  return
User is {isIdle ? 'Idle' : 'Active'}
;
};

For scenarios with shorter timeouts, the logic automatically adjusts the throttle to maintain accuracy:

// Automatically scales throttling for a 1s timeout
const isQuickIdle = useIdle(1000);

Resources

GitHub Repository

NPM Package

LinkedIn Profile

Taming Async Race Conditions and Unmounted State in React: What's New in react-hook-lab

Taming Async Race Conditions and Unmounted State in React: What's New in react-hook-lab

Every React developer has encountered the dreaded console warning: "Can't perform a React state update on an unmounted component." Or worse, subtle race conditions where an earlier slow network response resolves after a newer one and overwrites valid user data.

In the latest release of react-hook-lab, we focused on hardening our async and browser hooks against edge cases, memory leaks, and unmounted component state updates.

Here is a breakdown of the notable updates, behavioral fixes, and how you can leverage them in your applications.

1. What Changed Across the Suite?

Async Hooks (
useAsync
,
useAsyncDebounce
,
useDebounce
)

Request Invalidation:
useAsync
now tracks request sequences using internal identifiers. If dependencies change or a component unmounts while a promise is in flight, the stale response is safely discarded without mutating component state.

Controlled Debounce Dependencies:
useAsyncDebounce
now supports an explicit dependency list alongside internal ref synchronizations to avoid unnecessary re-triggers or missed parameter updates.

Preserving Whitespace with
useDebounce
: By default,
useDebounce
trims whitespace on strings. You can now pass
{ trim: false }
to strictly preserve raw input spacing—critical for live text editors and formatted inputs.

Browser & DOM Hooks (
useClipboard
,
useCamera
,
useDownload
,
useFullscreen
,
useCookie
)

Unmount-Safe Timers:
useClipboard
now exposes a manual
reset()
helper and safely tears down pending timeout handlers on unmount, preventing lingering timeouts from calling unmounted state setters.

Target-Aware Fullscreen:
useFullscreen
now strictly tracks whether the active fullscreen element matches the specific target element reference rather than any element on the page.

Path-Aware Cookie Verification:
useCookie
now accounts for route scopes before attempting verification checks against client-side cookies.

2. Practical Examples

Example 1: Robust Copy to Clipboard with Manual Reset

The updated
useClipboard
hook guarantees that component unmounts will not leave orphan timers behind, and provides an explicit
reset
trigger for complex UI states.

import React from "react";
import { useClipboard } from "react-hook-lab";

export function ApiKeyCard({ apiKey }: { apiKey: string }) {
  const { copied, error, copy, reset } = useClipboard(2500);

  return (

{apiKey}

      <button onClick={() => copy(apiKey)} disabled={copied}>
        {copied ? "Copied!" : "Copy Key"}

      {copied && (

          Dismiss

      )}
      {error && Failed to copy: {error.message}}

  );
}

Example 2: Debounced Text Input with Preserved Spaces

When debouncing search inputs or markdown editors, trimming trailing spaces prematurely breaks the typing flow. The new
trim
configuration in
useDebounce
lets you keep input spacing intact:

import React, { useState } from "react";
import { useDebounce } from "react-hook-lab";

export function RealtimeNotePreview() {
  const [content, setContent] = useState("");

  // Preserve active trailing whitespace while the user pauses
  const debouncedContent = useDebounce(content, 400, {
    trim: false,
  });

  return (

      <textarea
        value={content}
        onChange={(e) => setContent(e.target.value)}
        placeholder="Type markdown notes here..."
      />

Parsed Output

{debouncedContent}

  );
}

3. Upgrading

These updates are backward compatible for the vast majority of consumers while eliminating ghost state updates under heavy re-renders.

npm install react-hook-lab@latest

Stop Fighting Referential Instability: Solving React Re-Renders with useDeepMemo

We've all been there: you pass an object literal or an array as a dependency to
useMemo
or
useEffect
, only to realize it triggers on every single render. Because JavaScript compares objects by reference rather than structure,
{}
never equals
{}
.

In the latest release of
react-hook-lab
(v1.6.0), we are introducing a highly requested utility to put an end to referential instability:
useDeepMemo
, alongside a fully-featured, production-ready
deepEqual
helper.

The Problem: Strict Equality vs. Structural Equality

React's native
useMemo
uses strict reference equality (
Object.is
) to check if dependencies have changed. If your parent component passes a configuration object down, or if you define an array literal inline, React assumes the dependency has changed, forcing expensive recalculations.

The Solution:
useDeepMemo

Our new
useDeepMemo
hook compares dependencies by structural value rather than reference. It uses a custom deep equality engine that handles complex edge cases—including circular references, nested objects, arrays, Dates, RegExps, Maps, and Sets.

Let's look at how you can use these new updates in your React projects.

Code Example 1: Preventing Re-calculations with
useDeepMemo

In this example,
filters
is an object recreation on every render. Standard
useMemo
would fail to optimize this, but
useDeepMemo
handles it gracefully.

import React, { useState } from 'react';
import { useDeepMemo } from 'react-hook-lab';

interface FilterProps {
  category: string;
  tags: string[];
}

export const ProductDashboard = ({ category, tags }: FilterProps) => {
  const [search, setSearch] = useState('');

  // This object literal is recreated on every render
  const filterQuery = { category, tags };

  // useDeepMemo ensures this only recalculates when the inner values change!
  const processedResults = useDeepMemo(() => {
    console.log('Running expensive filter operation...');
    return performHeavySearch(filterQuery, search);
  }, [filterQuery, search]);

  return (

      <input value={search} onChange={(e) => setSearch(e.target.value)} />
      {/* Render results */}

  );
};

function performHeavySearch(query: FilterProps, search: string) {
  return [`Result for ${query.category} with search: ${search}`];
}

Code Example 2: Streamlined State with the Updated
useToggle

We have also refactored the
useToggle
hook to support cleaner object destructuring. Instead of matching index positions in an array, you can now grab
value
and
toggle
directly.

import React from 'react';
import { useToggle } from 'react-hook-lab';

export const ThemeSwitcher = () => {
  // useToggle now returns an intuitive object representation!
  const { value: theme, toggle: toggleTheme } = useToggle('light', 'dark');

  return (

Active Theme: {theme}

      Toggle Theme

  );
};

Under the Hood: Deep Equality Utilities

The engine powering this hook is our standalone
deepEqual
utility. It was migrated and exposed globally so you can use it anywhere in your codebase. It safely handles:

Circular References: Uses a
WeakMap
tracker to prevent infinite recursion.

Built-in Types: Deep-compares
Date
timestamps,
RegExp
sources, and
Map
values.

Scalable Set Handling: Safely matches sets with scalable reference tracking.

We have also updated the documentation for
useBoolean
to align with the correct api methods (
setTrue
and
setFalse
).

Solving Hydration Failures and Tree-Shaking in React: Announcing react-hook-lab v1.13.0

If you have ever built a server-rendered React application (using Next.js or Remix), you know the nightmare of client-server hydration mismatch errors. One of the most common offenders is state synchronization with browser storage—especially cookies.

Today, we are excited to release react-hook-lab v1.13.0, which addresses this exact headache. This update introduces the brand new
useCookie
hook, standardizes our asynchronous
useResource
module, and completely overhauls our library's export structure for industry-standard tree-shaking.

Why
useCookie
is Built Differently

Many custom React hooks for cookies fall into common traps:

They trigger hydration mismatches because the server has no access to
document.cookie
during initial render.

They ignore RFC 6265 safety limits and specifications, leaving applications vulnerable to runtime errors when cookie strings exceed browser limits (typically 4KB).

They allow conflicting configurations (like mixing
max-age
and explicit
expires
dates).

useCookie
solves all of these issues out of the box with strong TypeScript verification, automatic SSR safety, and size safety limits.

Code Example: Hydration-Safe Cookie Management

import React from 'react';
import { useCookie } from 'react-hook-lab';

export function UserPreferences() {
  // This hook gracefully falls back to 'light' on the server
  // and updates to the stored browser cookie after client hydration.
  const [theme, setTheme, deleteTheme] = useCookie('app-theme', {
    initialValue: 'light',
    days: 30,
    secure: true,
    sameSite: 'lax',
  });

  return (
    <div style={{
      background: theme === 'dark' ? '#333' : '#fff',
      color: theme === 'dark' ? '#fff' : '#000'
    }}>

Current Theme: {theme}

      <button onClick={() => setTheme('dark')}>Dark Mode
      <button onClick={() => setTheme('light')}>Light Mode
      <button onClick={() => deleteTheme()}>Clear Preference

  );
}

Efficient Data Management with
useResource

Managing remote API state should not require hundreds of lines of boilerplate. The newly refined
useResource
hook acts as a lightweight, reactive data manager, providing declarative status tracking for loading and error states while enforcing clean cleanups during unmounting.

Code Example: Safe API Requests with useResource

import React from 'react';
import { useResource } from 'react-hook-lab';

const fetchUserProfile = async (id) => {
  const res = await fetch(`https://api.github.com/users/${id}`);
  if (!res.ok) throw new Error('User not found');
  return res.json();
};

export function GitHubUser({ username }) {
  const { data, loading, error, refetch } = useResource({
    key: `github-user-${username}`,
    fetcher: () => fetchUserProfile(username),
  });

  if (loading) return
Loading profiles...
;
  if (error) return
Error loading profile: {error.message}
;

  return (

{data?.name || username}

{data?.bio}

      Refresh Profile

  );
}

Zero Bundle Bloat: Explicit Named Exports

In previous versions, we exported hooks using wildcard exports (
export * from ...
). While convenient, wildcard exports make it difficult for modern bundlers (like Webpack, Rollup, and Vite) to perform tree-shaking effectively.

In this release, we have replaced wildcard exports with explicit, strict named exports. Now, if you only import
useCookie
, your production bundle will not be weighed down by camera, microphone, or filesystem hooks. Your application stays lightweight, and your IDE's auto-complete performance improves significantly.

Beyond Video: Portal Any React Component into Picture-in-Picture with usePip

Picture-in-Picture (PiP) has historically been limited to video elements. If you wanted to build a floating music player, a persistent chat widget, or an interactive pomodoro timer that stayed on top of other windows, you were out of luck.

That changes with the browser's new Document Picture-in-Picture API, which allows opening a floating window containing arbitrary HTML content. However, managing this window's lifecycle, rendering React components inside it, and ensuring your CSS styles copy over correctly is a complex task.

To solve this, the latest update to
react-hook-lab
introduces the
usePip
hook. This hook makes managing the Document Picture-in-Picture API completely seamless by handling state, managing portal containers, and cloning your stylesheets automatically.

Why usePip?

Declarative Portals: Render any React component inside the floating window using a simple
<Pip>
component.

Style Inheritance: Automatically clones all stylesheets (including Tailwind or CSS-in-JS rules) from your main document into the PiP window.

Browser Fallback: Gracefully detects support with
isSupported
so you can show fallback UI on unsupported browsers.

Example 1: Creating an Interactive Floating Counter

This simple example shows how easily you can open a PiP window and interact with React state from inside the floating layout.

import React, { useState } from "react";
import { usePip } from "react-hook-lab";

export function FloatingCounter() {
  const { isSupported, isOpen, openPip, closePip, Pip } = usePip();
  const [count, setCount] = useState(0);

  if (!isSupported) {
    return
Document Picture-in-Picture is not supported in this browser.
;
  }

  return (
    <div style={{ padding: "20px", border: "1px solid #ccc", borderRadius: "8px" }}>

Interactive Counter Demo

Main Window Count: {count}

      <button onClick={() => (isOpen ? closePip() : openPip({ width: 300, height: 250 }))}>
        {isOpen ? "Close Floating Window" : "Pop Out Counter"}

      <Pip width={300} height={250}>
        <div style={{ padding: "20px", textAlign: "center", fontFamily: "sans-serif" }}>

Floating Controller

          <p style={{ fontSize: "24px", fontWeight: "bold" }}>{count}

          <button onClick={() => setCount((c) => c + 1)} style={{ marginRight: "8px" }}>
            Increment

          <button onClick={() => setCount((c) => c - 1)}>
            Decrement

      </Pip>

  );
}

Example 2: Building a Floating Pomodoro Timer

Here is a more practical case study: an interactive Pomodoro timer that users can keep pinned to the corner of their screen while working in other apps.

import React, { useState, useEffect } from "react";
import { usePip } from "react-hook-lab";

export function PomodoroTimer() {
  const { isOpen, openPip, closePip, Pip } = usePip();
  const [seconds, setSeconds] = useState(1500); // 25 minutes
  const [isActive, setIsActive] = useState(false);

  useEffect(() => {
    let interval: any = null;
    if (isActive && seconds > 0) {
      interval = setInterval(() => setSeconds((s) => s - 1), 1000);
    } else {
      clearInterval(interval);
    }
    return () => clearInterval(interval);
  }, [isActive, seconds]);

  const formatTime = (totalSecs: number) => {
    const mins = Math.floor(totalSecs / 60).toString().padStart(2, "0");
    const secs = (totalSecs % 60).toString().padStart(2, "0");
    return `${mins}:${secs}`;
  };

  return (
    <div style={{ padding: "20px", maxWidth: "400px", margin: "auto" }}>

Pomodoro Timer

Time remaining: {formatTime(seconds)}

      <button onClick={() => (isOpen ? closePip() : openPip({ width: 280, height: 220 }))}>
        {isOpen ? "Disable Floating mode" : "Go Floating"}

      <Pip width={280} height={220}>
        <div style={{
          padding: "16px",
          fontFamily: "sans-serif",
          background: "#1e293b",
          color: "#ffffff",
          height: "100%",
          boxSizing: "border-box"
        }}>
          <h3 style={{ margin: "0 0 10px 0" }}>Focus Mode

          <div style={{ fontSize: "36px", margin: "10px 0" }}>{formatTime(seconds)}

          <button onClick={() => setIsActive(!isActive)} style={{ padding: "6px 12px", marginRight: "8px" }}>
            {isActive ? "Pause" : "Start"}

          <button onClick={() => { setSeconds(1500); setIsActive(false); }} style={{ padding: "6px 12px" }}>
            Reset

      </Pip>

  );
}

How It Works Behind the Scenes

When you call
openPip()
, the hook requests a new PiP window using
window.documentPictureInPicture.requestWindow()
. Once created, it dynamically clones every CSS stylesheet registered on the main window into the header of the new window, ensuring consistent typography and style formatting. Finally, using React's
createPortal
, it renders your custom markup directly inside the external floating window context.

Supercharge Your React Apps: Introducing 5 New Native API Hooks in react-hook-lab

We've all been there: you need to implement a camera capture feature, grab the user's geolocation, or monitor user activity, and you end up writing hundreds of lines of fragile, device-specific boilerplate Web API code.

Today, I'm thrilled to announce a major update to react-hook-lab! We have added 5 brand-new, production-ready React hooks that wrap complex browser APIs into simple, type-safe, and zero-dependency functions.

Let's dive into what's new in this release!

1. useCamera

Accessing the user's camera is notoriously tricky, especially when managing streams, handling browser permissions, taking snapshots, and safely releasing media tracks.
useCamera
handles all of this automatically, including high-quality video and audio recording.

Here is how easy it is to capture a photo snapshot with
useCamera
:

import { useCamera } from 'react-hook-lab';

export function CameraSnapshot() {
  const { videoRef, status, requestCamera, captureImage, imageUrl } = useCamera();

  return (

Camera Status: {status}

      Turn On Camera
      <button onClick={() => captureImage()}>Take Snapshot

      <video ref={videoRef} autoPlay playsInline style={{ width: '100%', maxHeight: '300px' }} />

      {imageUrl && (

Captured Image:

          <img src={imageUrl} alt="Captured Snapshot" style={{ width: '100%' }} />

      )}

  );
}

2. useLocation

The Geolocation API can be difficult to track reactively, especially when permissions change after page load.
useLocation
tracks permission states reactively and retrieves coordinate data safely with high accuracy.

import { useLocation } from 'react-hook-lab';

export function TrackLocation() {
  const { location, status, error, retry } = useLocation();

  return (

GPS Tracker

Permission Status: {status}

      {location && (

          Latitude: {location.lat.toFixed(4)}
Longitude: {location.lng.toFixed(4)}
Accuracy: {location.accuracy} meters

      )}

      {error && (

          <p style={{ color: 'red' }}>{error}

          Retry Location Request

      )}

  );
}

3. Other Powerful New Hooks

useMicrophone: Safely request microphone access, record audio files, and get real-time, throttled volume level updates (throttled to 10fps for ultimate rendering performance).

useIdle: Track user inactivity effortlessly. This is highly useful for auto-logging out users or pausing heavy background polling when the user is away.

useTimezone: Easily fetch the user's localized timezone configuration string in one clean declaration.

All of these new hooks come with 100% test coverage and full TypeScript autocomplete support out of the box.

Cross-Tab State Sync: Introducing useIndexedDB for React

Managing persistent application state often involves a trade-off between the simplicity of
localStorage
and the performance of
IndexedDB
. Today, I’m excited to announce the addition of
useIndexedDB
to
react-hook-lab
.

Why useIndexedDB?

IndexedDB
is powerful, but its asynchronous, event-driven API is notoriously difficult to integrate into React’s declarative lifecycle.
useIndexedDB
abstracts this complexity, offering a
useState
-like experience that automatically handles cross-tab synchronization.

Getting Started

First, configure your database once at the root of your application:

import { createIndexedDB } from 'react-hook-lab';

createIndexedDB({
  dbName: 'my-app-db',
  stores: ['settings']
});

Now, you can consume your state anywhere in your component tree:

import { useIndexedDB } from 'react-hook-lab';

function ThemeToggle() {
  const [theme, setTheme, meta] = useIndexedDB('settings', 'ui-theme', 'light');

  if (meta.status === 'loading') return
Loading...
;

  return (
    <button onClick={() => setTheme(theme === 'light' ? 'dark' : 'light')}>
      Current theme: {theme}

  );
}

Key Features

Cross-Tab Synchronization: Updates made in one tab are instantly reflected in others via
BroadcastChannel
.

Optimistic Updates: Your UI stays responsive by updating locally before the asynchronous database write finishes.

Simplified API: No more manual transaction management or event listener boilerplate.

Resources

A Smarter Way to Deep Clone in React: Introducing useDeepClone

Deep cloning objects in React has always been a tightrope walk between performance and correctness. If you use
JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(obj))
, you lose dates, maps, sets, and circular references. If you use third-party libraries, you risk bloating your bundle. And if you clone on every single render, you shatter React's reference stability, triggering infinite render loops.

In the latest release of
react-hook-lab
, we are addressing these problems directly with the addition of the highly optimized
deepClone
utility and its companion React hook,
useDeepClone
.

Here is a technical deep dive into how these additions work, how they are optimized, and how you can use them today.

Why
useDeepClone
?

The
useDeepClone
hook solves two problems at once:

Performance-Optimized Cloning: Under the hood, our custom cloning engine handles circular references, preserves prototype chains, supports modern native types (like
Map
,
Set
,
Date
,
RegExp
, and
TypedArrays
), and protects against prototype pollution.

Reference Stability: The hook maintains an internal cache. If the input reference does not change between renders, the hook completely skips the cloning logic and returns the cached, reference-stable cloned object.

Code Example 1: Standalone Deep Cloning

You can import the standalone
deepClone
utility to handle complex data manipulation inside events, state transitions, or utility functions.

import { deepClone } from 'react-hook-lab';

// Create a complex object with circular references and modern JS types
const original = {
  name: 'React Hook Lab',
  created: new Date(),
  tags: new Set(['react', 'hooks']),
  metadata: new Map([['version', '1.2.0']]),
  self: null
};

// Create a circular reference
original.self = original;

// Deep clone safely without losing types or throwing circular dependency errors
const clone = deepClone(original);

console.log(clone !== original); // true
console.log(clone.created instanceof Date); // true
console.log(clone.self === clone); // true (circular reference is preserved!)

Code Example 2: Stabilizing State with
useDeepClone

In React components, passing a newly cloned object down as a prop can cause child components to re-render unnecessarily. The
useDeepClone
hook ensures that you only generate a new clone if the incoming data actually changes its reference.

import React, { useState } from 'react';
import { useDeepClone } from 'react-hook-lab';

function ComplexDashboard({ data }) {
  // useDeepClone will only re-clone if the reference of 'data' changes.
  // If this component re-renders for other reasons, the clone is skipped.
  const safeConfig = useDeepClone(data);

  return (

Configuration Explorer

Config Name: {safeConfig.name}

Last Evaluated: {safeConfig.created?.toLocaleTimeString()}

  );
}

Other Improvements in this Release

Alongside the cloning utility, we've standardized code formatting, resolved several minor ESLint warnings, and refined our internal JSDoc comments (marking state-sharing engine helpers as
@internal
) to keep autocompletion clean and focused for end-users across our standard browser hooks like
useCamera
,
useLocation
,
useMicrophone
,
useIdle
, and
useTimezone
.

Resources

Stop Fighting Your Router: Full URL Parsing in React with Zero Dependencies

How many times have you installed a massive routing framework just to parse a query parameter or generate a breadcrumb trail?

In lightweight React applications, embedding heavy-weight navigation packages just to read from
window.location
feels like overkill. Yet, writing your own state listeners to safely track dynamic changes—especially programmatic updates via
history.pushState
—is surprisingly complex and error-prone.

That is why we just introduced the
useURL
hook in the react-hook-lab library. It provides native, real-time, SSR-safe URL tracking and detailed analytical metadata with absolutely zero external dependencies.

Why Tracking the URL is Hard in Vanilla React

React doesn't natively watch the URL. The standard
window.location
object is not reactive; updating the search params or executing a history push does not trigger a re-render. Developers usually resort to:

Listening to
popstate
(which misses programmatic routing like
pushState
/
replaceState
).

Hooking into framework-specific routers (which locks your component into that specific ecosystem).

Building brittle custom state syncs that often suffer from referential instability and infinite render loops.

useURL
solves this cleanly by globally monkey-patching
pushState
and
replaceState
once, exposing a fully reactive, deeply parsed URL representation that works across any standard React app.

Code Example 1: Real-Time Search and Query Parameter Extraction

Extracting search queries and acting on them is as simple as reading an object.
useURL
automatically aggregates duplicate query parameters into clean arrays.

import React from 'react';
import { useURL } from 'react-hook-lab';

export function SearchInterface() {
  const { query, pathname } = useURL();

  // Safely parse single query parameters or lists
  const searchTerm = typeof query.q === 'string' ? query.q : '';
  const selectedFilters = Array.isArray(query.filter)
    ? query.filter
    : query.filter
    ? [query.filter]
    : [];

  return (
    <div style={{ padding: '16px', border: '1px solid #ccc' }}>

Active Route: {pathname}

Search Term: {searchTerm || 'None'}

        Active Filters:
        {selectedFilters.map((filter) => (
          <span key={filter} style={{ margin: '0 4px', background: '#ddd', padding: '2px 6px' }}>
            {filter}

        ))}

  );
}

Code Example 2: Automatic Breadcrumbs and Navigation History

useURL
maintains a reference to your previous path, tracking whether the route changed in the current session and compiling progressive breadcrumbs on the fly.

import React from 'react';
import { useURL } from 'react-hook-lab';

export function DynamicBreadcrumbs() {
  const { breadcrumbs, previous, changed, timestamp } = useURL();

  return (
    <nav aria-label="breadcrumb" style={{ fontFamily: 'sans-serif' }}>
      <ol style={{ display: 'flex', listStyle: 'none', padding: 0 }}>
        {breadcrumbs.map((crumb, index) => (
          <li key={crumb.path} style={{ marginRight: '8px' }}>
            {crumb.name}
            {index < breadcrumbs.length - 1 && <span style={{ marginLeft: '8px' }}>/}

        ))}

      {changed && (
        <p style={{ fontSize: '12px', color: '#666' }}>
          You navigated here from {previous} at {new Date(timestamp).toLocaleTimeString()}.

      )}

  );
}

Comprehensive Features in useURL

Beyond basic pathnames and parameters, the return payload includes structural information:

Go Fullscreen Safely in React: Introducing the useFullscreen Hook

Managing native browser APIs in React is always a bit of a tightrope walk. But few APIs are as notoriously frustrating as the Fullscreen API. Between varying implementations for Safari (
webkit
), Firefox (
moz
), and Edge/IE (
ms
), building a custom fullscreen button can quickly devolve into a spaghetti-mess of compatibility checks.

In the latest release of
react-hook-lab
, we are addressing this head-on with the introduction of a robust, production-ready hook:
useFullscreen
.

Alongside this, we have systematically optimized the library's compilation profile using TypeScript type-only imports to keep your production bundles as lean as possible.

The Problem with Native Fullscreen

To make an element fullscreen natively, you have to write checks like this:

if (elem.requestFullscreen) {
  elem.requestFullscreen();
} else if (elem.webkitRequestFullscreen) {
  elem.webkitRequestFullscreen();
} else if (elem.msRequestFullscreen) {
  elem.msRequestFullscreen();
}

This degrades code readability, ignores reactive state synchronization, and introduces potential runtime errors if handled incorrectly.

Enter
useFullscreen

The new
useFullscreen
hook abstracts away all prefix quirks, tracks the active fullscreen state across document-level events, and provides safe, promise-based controllers.

Here are two practical examples of how to drop it into your React projects today.

Example 1: Building a Custom Video Player Control

When creating video elements, you often want a custom UI button to trigger fullscreen mode for the video element itself.

import React from "react";
import { useFullscreen } from "react-hook-lab";

export function VideoPlayer() {
  const { ref, isFullscreen, toggle, error } = useFullscreen<HTMLVideoElement>();

  return (
    <div style={{ maxWidth: "600px", margin: "20px auto", textAlign: "center" }}>

Custom React Video Player

      {error && <p style={{ color: "red" }}>Error: {error.message}
}

      <video
        ref={ref}
        src="https://www.w3schools.com/html/mov_bbb.mp4"
        controls
        style={{ width: "100%", borderRadius: "8px" }}
      />

      <button
        onClick={toggle}
        style={{ marginTop: "10px", padding: "8px 16px", cursor: "pointer" }}
      >
        {isFullscreen ? "Exit Fullscreen" : "Go Fullscreen"}

  );
}

Example 2: Interactive Dashboard Widget Focus

You might want to allow users to zoom in and focus on a specific dashboard widget or presentation slide, blocking out other distractions.

import React from "react";
import { useFullscreen } from "react-hook-lab";

export function DashboardWidget() {
  const { ref, enter, exit, isFullscreen } = useFullscreen<HTMLDivElement>();

  return (
    <div
      ref={ref}
      style={{
        background: isFullscreen ? "#1e1e1e" : "#f5f5f5",
        color: isFullscreen ? "#ffffff" : "#000000",
        padding: "40px",
        borderRadius: "12px",
        textAlign: "center",
        border: "1px solid #ddd"
      }}
    >

Interactive Sales Data

Analyze key performance indicators in detailed fullscreen view.

      <div style={{ margin: "40px 0" }}>
        {/* Imagine a complex chart here */}
        <span style={{ fontSize: "48px" }}>📊 +148%

      {isFullscreen ? (
        <button onClick={exit} style={{ padding: "10px 20px" }}>
          Exit Focus Mode

      ) : (
        <button onClick={enter} style={{ padding: "10px 20px" }}>
          Maximize Chart

      )}

  );
}

Behind the Scenes: Library-Wide Performance Tweaks

We didn't just add new functionality; we also improved our existing hooks. We systematically refactored internal declarations to use TypeScript
import type
across the entire package, including popular hooks like
useAsync
,
useCamera
,
useClickOutside
,
useToggle
, and
useDeepMemo
.

By ensuring that types are explicitly declared, modern bundlers (like Vite, Webpack, and Rollup) can safely strip typescript definitions during the build process. This leads to superior tree-shaking and minimizes bundle sizes for the end user.

We also patched a potential runtime warning in our debug helper
useRenderReason
to prevent unexpected Node-type environment errors during server-side rendering.

Build Snappy Offline-First Apps: Introducing SWR and IndexedDB-powered useResource in react-hook-lab

Data fetching in modern React apps often forces a trade-off: either you build complex caching infrastructure, or you accept awkward layout shifts, loading spinners, and sluggish transitions. SWR (Stale-While-Revalidate) changed the game for in-memory fetching, but what if your app needs to work seamlessly offline, cache gigabytes of data securely, and coordinate state across browser tabs?

Today, I'm thrilled to announce the release of useResource, a highly optimized React hook designed to tackle SWR-based data fetching, cache persistence, and state management inside the
react-hook-lab
library. Along with this, we've updated useIndexedDB with conditional control to lay down a robust architecture for offline-first React systems.

Let's dive into how it works and how you can use it to build incredibly snappy user interfaces.

Why
useResource
?

Unlike traditional query libraries that require extensive configuration,
useResource
brings atomic SWR caching and browser-native persistence under one simple roof.

Key features include:

Flexible Caching Layers: Store cached data in-memory, synchronize it globally across instances using
shared
memory, or save it permanently via
indexeddb
.

Optimistic Mutations: Update your local UI instantly while the background syncing handles server reconciliations.

Automatic Retries: Smart exponential backoff retry logic built right into the hook.

Tab Synchronization: Changes inside one tab automatically replicate in others, minimizing redundant API requests.

Feature Deep Dive & Code Examples

To power these advanced capabilities, we also upgraded useIndexedDB by adding a custom
enabled
option. This allows hooks to conditionally bypass storage transactions when they are idle or during complex setup states, avoiding unnecessary database operations.

Here are two concrete examples showing how you can integrate these updates into your codebase today.

Example 1: Basic SWR Data Fetching

If you need simple background revalidation with robust loading states and easy refresh actions, a lightweight memory cache is all you need.

import React from 'react';
import { useResource } from 'react-hook-lab';

const fetchUserProfile = async (signal) => {
  const response = await fetch('/api/user/profile', { signal });
  if (!response.ok) throw new Error('Failed to load profile');
  return response.json();
};

export function UserProfile() {
  const { data, loading, error, refresh } = useResource({
    key: 'user-profile',
    fetcher: fetchUserProfile,
    staleTime: 10000, // consider fresh for 10 seconds
  });

  if (loading && !data) return
Loading your profile...
;
  if (error) return
Error: {error.message}
;

  return (

Welcome, {data?.name}!

Email: {data?.email}

      Force Revalidate

  );
}

Example 2: Offline-First Caching with IndexedDB & Optimistic UI

By leveraging the newly integrated IndexedDB storage backend, you can store heavy datasets on the user's hard drive and update the interface immediately while server calls complete in the background.

import React from 'react';
import { useResource } from 'react-hook-lab';

const fetchTodoList = async (signal) => {
  const response = await fetch('/api/todos', { signal });
  return response.json();
};

export function TodoManager() {
  const { data: todos, mutate, loading } = useResource({
    key: 'todo-items',
    fetcher: fetchTodoList,
    cache: 'indexeddb', // Persist data locally via IndexedDB
    persist: {
      store: 'app-cache-store',
    },
    initialData: [],
  });

  const handleToggleTodo = (todoId) => {
    // Optimistically update the checklist locally
    mutate((currentList) => {
      return (currentList || []).map((todo) =>
        todo.id === todoId ? { ...todo, completed: !todo.completed } : todo
      );
    });
  };

  return (

Your Tasks {loading && ' (Syncing with server...)'}

        {todos?.map((todo) => (
          <li key={todo.id} style={{ textDecoration: todo.completed ? 'line-through' : 'none' }}>

              {todo.text}

        ))}

import { useFullscreen } from "react-hook-lab";

export function DashboardWidget() {

      <div style={{ margin: "40px 0" }}>
        {/* Imagine a complex chart here */}
        <span style={{ fontSize: "48px" }}>📊 +148%

      {isFullscreen ? (
        <button onClick={exit} style={{ padding: "10px 20px" }}>
          Exit Focus Mode

        <button onClick={enter} style={{ padding: "10px 20px" }}>
          Maximize Chart

      )}

  );
}

Behind the Scenes: Library-Wide Performance Tweaks

We didn't just add new functionality; we also improved our existing hooks. We systematically refactored internal declarations to use TypeScript
import type
across the entire package, including popular hooks like
useAsync
,
useCamera
,
useClickOutside
,
useToggle
, and
useDeepMemo

Cross-Tab State Sync: Introducing useIndexedDB for React

Managing persistent application state often involves a trade-off between the simplicity of
localStorage
and the performance of
IndexedDB
. Today, I’m excited to announce the addition of
useIndexedDB
to
react-hook-lab
.

Why useIndexedDB?

IndexedDB
is powerful, but its asynchronous, event-driven API is notoriously difficult to integrate into React’s declarative lifecycle.
useIndexedDB
abstracts this complexity, offering a
useState
-like experience that automatically handles cross-tab synchronization.

Getting Started

First, configure your database once at the root of your application:

import { createIndexedDB } from 'react-hook-lab';

createIndexedDB({
  dbName: 'my-app-db',
  stores: ['settings']
});

Now, you can consume your state anywhere in your component tree:

import { useIndexedDB } from 'react-hook-lab';

function ThemeToggle() {
  const [theme, setTheme, meta] = useIndexedDB('settings', 'ui-theme', 'light');

  if (meta.status === 'loading') return
Loading...
;

  return (
    <button onClick={() => setTheme(theme === 'light' ? 'dark' : 'light')}>
      Current theme: {theme}

  );
}

Resources

Build Direct-to-Disk Web Editors with the New useFileSystem Hook

We have all built or used web-based text and configuration tools. The absolute worst part of the user experience is the continuous download cycle. Want to save your progress? Click download. Need to make a quick adjustment? Download
config (3).json
again.

Modern browsers solve this with the File System Access API, which lets web applications read and write directly to files on the user's local disk. However, managing file handles, tracking reading/saving states, and handling user cancellations in React can introduce massive amounts of boilerplate.

In the latest release of
react-hook-lab
, we are excited to introduce the
useFileSystem
hook to handle all of this for you.

What is useFileSystem?

useFileSystem
is a declarative, type-safe React hook that wraps the browser's native File System Access API. It allows you to prompt users to open a file, read its content directly into your state, and continuously write changes back to that same file on disk without prompting for re-downloads.

Here are some of its primary features:

Real-time Status Tracking: Easily handle UI states using the built-in states:
idle
,
picking
,
reading
,
saving
, and
error
.

Standardized State Management: Keeps track of the active
File
metadata, raw
content
, and the underlying
FileSystemFileHandle
.

Smart Error Handling: Gracefully handles user cancellations (like closing the file picker) without throwing unhandled exceptions.

Let's dive into some practical code examples to see it in action.

Example 1: Creating a Basic File Reader & Writer

This simple component allows a user to open any text file, view its raw contents, and append a timestamped log line directly back to that same file on disk.

import React from "react";
import { useFileSystem } from "react-hook-lab";

export function SimpleLogWriter() {
  const {
    open,
    save,
    content,
    status,
    file,
    isSupported
  } = useFileSystem({
    accept: { "text/plain": [".txt"] },
    description: "Log Files"
  });

  if (!isSupported) {
    return
Your browser does not support direct file system access.
;
  }

  const handleAppendLog = () => {
    const existingContent = content || "";
    const newLog = `${existingContent}\n[LOG] Updated at ${new Date().toLocaleTimeString()}`;
    save(newLog);
  };

  return (
    <div style={{ padding: "1rem", border: "1px solid #ccc", borderRadius: "8px" }}>

Direct-to-Disk Log Writer

Status: {status}

      {file &&
Editing file:
{file.name}
({file.size} bytes)
}

      <div style={{ display: "flex", gap: "0.5rem", marginBottom: "1rem" }}>
        <button onClick={() => open()}>Open Log File
        <button onClick={handleAppendLog} disabled={!file || status === "saving"}>
          Append Log Entry

      <pre style={{ background: "#f5f5f5", padding: "1rem", borderRadius: "4px" }}>
        {content || "No file loaded. Click 'Open Log File' to load a text document."}

  );
}

Example 2: Markdown Editor with Save As Support

In a real-world scenario, you want to allow users to edit text in a text area, write changes to the original file, and trigger a "Save As" prompt when they want to create a new copy or rename it.

import React, { useState, useEffect } from "react";
import { useFileSystem } from "react-hook-lab";

export function MarkdownEditor() {
  const {
    open,
    save,
    saveAs,
    content,
    file,
    reset,
    status
  } = useFileSystem({
    accept: { "text/markdown": [".md"] },
    description: "Markdown Documents"
  });

  const [editorText, setEditorText] = useState("");

  // Keep local editor state in sync when a file is loaded
  useEffect(() => {
    if (content !== null) {
      setEditorText(content);
    }
  }, [content]);

  const handleNewFile = () => {
    reset();
    setEditorText("");
  };

  return (

{file ? `Editing: ${file.name}` : "New Document *"}

      <textarea
        value={editorText}
        onChange={(e) => setEditorText(e.target.value)}
        rows={10}
        style={{ width: "100%", fontFamily: "monospace", padding: "0.5rem" }}
        placeholder="Type your markdown here..."
      />
      <div style={{ marginTop: "1rem", display: "flex", gap: "0.5rem" }}>
        <button onClick={() => open()}>Open File
        <button onClick={() => save(editorText)} disabled={status === "saving"}>
          Save

        <button
          onClick={() => saveAs(editorText, { suggestedName: "draft.md" })}
          disabled={status === "saving"}
        >
          Save As...

        New File (Reset)

      <p style={{ fontSize: "0.85rem", color: "#666" }}>Current status: {status}

  );
}

Wrapping Up

Web apps are becoming more powerful, blurring the lines between standard websites and full-fledged desktop applications. Direct-to-disk interaction using the
useFileSystem
hook is an incredible tool for developer portals, configuration managers, web-based editors, and local-first utilities.

Give it a try in your next project!

Extracting search queries and acting on them is as simple as reading an object.
useURL
automatically aggregates duplicate query parameters into clean arrays.

import React from 'react';
import { useURL } from 'react-hook-lab';

export function SearchInterface() {
  const { query, pathname } = useURL();

  // Safely parse single query parameters or lists
  const searchTerm = typeof query.q === 'string' ? query.q : '';
  const selectedFilters = Array.isArray(query.filter)
    ? query.filter
    : query.filter
    ? [query.filter]
    : [];

  return (
    <div style={{ padding: '16px', border: '1px solid #ccc' }}>

Active Route: {pathname}

Search Term: {searchTerm || 'None'}

        Active Filters:
        {selectedFilters.map((filter) => (

filename
&
extension
: Automatically parsed path targets (e.g., extracts
report
and
pdf
from
/assets/report.pdf
).

parent
: Instantly determines the structural parent directory.

Stop Fighting Referential Instability: Solving React Re-Renders with useDeepMemo

We've all been there: you pass an object literal or an array as a dependency to
useMemo
or
useEffect
, only to realize it triggers on every single render. Because JavaScript compares objects by reference rather than structure,
{}
never equals
{}
.

In the latest release of
react-hook-lab
(v1.6.0), we are introducing a highly requested utility to put an end to referential instability:
useDeepMemo
, alongside a fully-featured, production-ready
deepEqual
helper.

The Problem: Strict Equality vs. Structural Equality

React's native
useMemo
uses strict reference equality (
Object.is
) to check if dependencies have changed. If your parent component passes a configuration object down, or if you define an array literal inline, React assumes the dependency has changed, forcing expensive recalculations.

The Solution:
useDeepMemo

Our new
useDeepMemo
hook compares dependencies by structural value rather than reference. It uses a custom deep equality engine that handles complex edge cases—including circular references, nested objects, arrays, Dates, RegExps, Maps, and Sets.

Let's look at how you can use these new updates in your React projects.

Code Example 1: Preventing Re-calculations with
useDeepMemo

In this example,
filters
is an object recreation on every render. Standard
useMemo
would fail to optimize this, but
useDeepMemo
handles it gracefully.

import React, { useState } from 'react';
import { useDeepMemo } from 'react-hook-lab';

interface FilterProps {
  category: string;
  tags: string[];
}

export const ProductDashboard = ({ category, tags }: FilterProps) => {
  const [search, setSearch] = useState('');

  // This object literal is recreated on every render
  const filterQuery = { category, tags };

  // useDeepMemo ensures this only recalculates when the inner values change!
  const processedResults = useDeepMemo(() => {
    console.log('Running expensive filter operation...');
    return performHeavySearch(filterQuery, search);
  }, [filterQuery, search]);

  return (

      <input value={search} onChange={(e) => setSearch(e.target.value)} />
      {/* Render results */}

  );
};

function performHeavySearch(query: FilterProps, search: string) {
  return [`Result for ${query.category} with search: ${search}`];
}

Code Example 2: Streamlined State with the Updated
useToggle

We have also refactored the
useToggle
hook to support cleaner object destructuring. Instead of matching index positions in an array, you can now grab
value
and
toggle
directly.

import React from 'react';
import { useToggle } from 'react-hook-lab';

export const ThemeSwitcher = () => {
  // useToggle now returns an intuitive object representation!
  const { value: theme, toggle: toggleTheme } = useToggle('light', 'dark');

  return (

Active Theme: {theme}

      Toggle Theme

  );
};

Under the Hood: Deep Equality Utilities

The engine powering this hook is our standalone
deepEqual
utility. It was migrated and exposed globally so you can use it anywhere in your codebase. It safely handles:

Circular References: Uses a
WeakMap
tracker to prevent infinite recursion.

Built-in Types: Deep-compares
Date
timestamps,
RegExp
sources, and
Map
values.

Scalable Set Handling: Safely matches sets with scalable reference tracking.

We have also updated the documentation for
useBoolean
to align with the correct api methods (
setTrue
and
setFalse
).
