India’s Next Technology Frontier: AI, Semiconductors and Quantum Tech, Says Sitharaman

On September 26, 2026, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductor chips and quantum technology are likely to become India’s next major areas of infrastructure investment. She made the remarks during a fireside chat organized by the IIT Madras Alumni Association in Bengaluru.

Sitharaman emphasized the need to accelerate the development of the hardware, skills and institutional ecosystem required to effectively use these emerging technologies. She also highlighted the need for greater investment in AI hardware, training and education.

On AI, Sitharaman rejected the perception that India had “missed the AI bus.” She pointed out that several Indian AI startups have already become unicorns or are approaching unicorn status. However, she noted that relatively few AI companies are listed on India’s major stock exchanges, the NSE and BSE.

She suggested that more AI companies entering the public markets could increase the international visibility of India’s AI ecosystem. According to her, the absence of listed AI companies should not be treated as sufficient evidence that India is falling behind in AI, since significant activity, funding and institutional development are already taking place in the country.

The minister also stressed that India’s technological development should extend beyond software to include AI hardware, semiconductor manufacturing and quantum technology, supported by skilled professionals, educational institutions and industry collaboration.

DEVS: Quantum Computing, Determinism, and the Multiverse Nightmare

In 1814, French mathematician and astronomer Pierre-Simon Laplace formulated one of the most famous thought experiments in scientific history: if a hypothetical supreme intellect — known to history as Laplace's Demon — knew the exact position and momentum of every atom in the universe at any given moment, nothing would be uncertain. The past and the future would lie unfolded before its eyes with the same mathematical certainty as the present. Free will would be nothing more than an illusion born of human ignorance of underlying variables.

Two centuries later, acclaimed filmmaker and novelist Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) loaded that philosophical postulate into a million-qubit quantum processor in the gripping miniseries "DEVS" (FX / Hulu).

Just as we explored in The Thinking Game with DeepMind's quest toward AGI, or in Halt and Catch Fire with the foundational era of personal computing, this post breaks down the physical, computational, and ethical pillars of DEVS: the piece of media that has most surgically understood the chilling intersection between quantum mechanics, strict determinism, and Silicon Valley hubris.

The Premise: The Golden Cube in the Redwood Forest

The narrative unfolds in the Santa Cruz Mountains south of Silicon Valley, on the secluded campus of Amaya, an omnipotent tech titan led by the enigmatic CEO Forest (played with mesmerizing gravitas by Nick Offerman). In the middle of an ancient redwood forest, beneath the shadow of a colossal golden statue of a little girl (Amaya, Forest's deceased daughter), lies a secret facility built of brutalist concrete.

At the core of this complex floats a monolithic cube of pure gold, suspended in an absolute electromagnetic vacuum via magnetic levitation. This design is no mere stylistic flourish; it addresses the greatest practical hurdle in real-world quantum hardware: quantum decoherence.

For quantum bits (qubits) to maintain their fragile states of superposition (existing in linear combinations of 0 and 1 simultaneously) and entanglement, they must be completely shielded from environmental thermal, acoustic, gravitational, or electromagnetic interference. If a single stray photon or microscopic vibration interacts with the system, the quantum wave function collapses, corrupting the calculation instantly.

Inside this golden Faraday cage, an elite team of physicists and cryptographers — including Sergei, Lyndon, Stewart, and Katie (Alison Pill) — works on software whose true purpose is shrouded in quasi-religious secrecy: building a quantum engine capable of reconstructing the past and projecting the future with subatomic fidelity.

The Clash of Paradigms: Determinism vs. Everett's Multiverse

The central dramatic and intellectual conflict of DEVS erupts between two irreconcilable interpretations of quantum physics:

1. Pilot Wave Theory (De Broglie–Bohm) and Strict Determinism

Forest fiercely defends a deterministic cosmos. He adheres to a quantum version of De Broglie–Bohm hidden-variable theory: the universe is a single, unbending timeline governed by unbreakable cause-and-effect mechanics. If the quantum computer ingests sufficient boundary parameters, it can render the past with absolute certainty: Socrates drinking hemlock, Christ on the cross, or his own daughter blowing bubbles in their living room moments before the fatal car crash that took her life.

For Forest, determinism is an essential psychological sanctuary: if the universe is a tram on fixed rails where every second was determined since the Big Bang, he bears no moral guilt for the tragedy that killed his family.

2. Hugh Everett III's Many-Worlds Interpretation

However, Amaya's early projections suffer from a fatal flaw: images of the past appear blurred, obscured by a deafening static of white noise that renders faces and voices unreadable.

Young programming prodigy Lyndon discovers the mathematical breakthrough: the noise arises because the algorithm attempts to force reality into a single, singular timeline. When Lyndon refactors the codebase using Hugh Everett's Many-Worlds Interpretation (postulating that every quantum measurement branches the universe into infinite parallel realities in superposition), the screen immediately resolves into breathtaking, pristine 4K video and crystal-clear audio.

Forest's reaction to this triumph is telling: instead of rewarding Lyndon, he fires him on the spot. Why? Because if the simulation is powered by Everett's multiverse, the little girl laughing on the screen is not his daughter Amaya in his timeline, but an alternate variant across a parallel dimensional branch. For Forest, an infinite multiverse robs his grief and mission of all purpose.

The Simulation Paradox and the Collapse of Free Will

As the system's quantum compute scales exponentially, the engine ceases looking merely backward and begins computing the immediate future.

Here, the series dives headlong into the most chilling recursive paradox in science fiction:

If the quantum computer renders on a screen in front of you with absolute accuracy what you will do five seconds from now... do you possess the free will to disobey the screen?

If you decide to cross your arms because the screen showed you clapping, the machine's predictive calculations already factored in your desire to rebel, showing you crossing your arms in the first place.

The characters become trapped in a waking nightmare: they turn into living automatons, reciting aloud the dialogue the monitor displayed seconds prior. Absolute prediction obliterates agency.

This Gordian knot is broken only by Lily Chan (Sonoya Mizuno). In the climactic confrontation, faced with the machine's unbending prediction that she will shoot Forest in the quantum elevator, Lily makes an unprecedented choice: she throws the handgun out of the door just before it seals. In that infinitesimal moment, human free will shatters algorithmic determinism. The quantum engine, blind beyond that point of infinite bifurcation, suffers a catastrophic breakdown in its event horizon.

The True Meaning of DEVS: Technology as Modern Theology

Near the conclusion of the series, Alex Garland reveals the linguistic key underpinning the title: in classical Roman Latin, the character 'V' was used interchangeably for the letter and sound 'U'. The secretive project was never named DEVS; it was always DEUS (the Latin word for God).

Garland offers no naive technological utopianism. DEVS stands as an eerie parable about the unchecked power of contemporary tech monopolies: corporations commanding capital reserves exceeding the GDP of sovereign nations, operating beyond democratic oversight, assuming the role of digital demiurges deciding what is real.

Connections to Real Quantum Computing and AI in 2026

While DEVS is speculative philosophical fiction, its themes directly mirror the frontiers of modern computer science:

Real Quantum Hardware: Pioneer institutions like IBM Quantum, Google Quantum AI, and European deep-tech leaders like Spain's Multiverse Computing are leveraging quantum tensor networks to tackle intractable combinatorial optimization and perform radical model compression on modern LLMs.

Information and Entropy: Amaya's obsessive need to eliminate thermal noise is the physical manifestation of Claude Shannon's Information Theory: isolating the signal from the noise is the fundamental precondition for computation.

Probability vs. Certainty: While Forest seeks absolute Newtonian certainty, modern data engineering and machine learning operate squarely within the paradigm of Thomas Bayes: we cannot know the universe with absolute determinism; we can only continuously update our probabilistic posteriors as new data arrives.

Ethical AI and Algorithmic Governance: The opaque, predictive surveillance machinery of Amaya represents the exact category of risk that the EU AI Act regulates under its High-Risk and Prohibited classifications: predictive systems that manipulate human behavior without human-in-the-loop oversight.

Conclusion

DEVS is a masterpiece of speculative television because it is not about lasers or robot uprisings; it is about the human search for meaning against the vastness of the cosmos.

It reminds us that the urge to forecast the future or resurrect the past does not originate in mathematics; it is born of love, grief, and regret. And it leaves us with an enduring insight: no matter how many qubits your hardware harnesses or how many parameters your neural network optimizes, uncertainty is not a flaw in the universe; uncertainty is the very sanctuary where human freedom lives.

Is Quantum Computing Finally Becoming Real?

You’ve probably heard the term quantum computing for years. It often comes with big promises, confusing explanations, and the impression that it’s still far away. But here’s the big question many people are asking now:

Did 2024 change everything for quantum computing?

Short answer: yes, in meaningful ways.

In 2024, quantum computing moved from theoretical headlines to real progress. Tech giants, startups, and research labs reported breakthroughs that brought us closer to working quantum machines. These machines could actually solve problems that classical computers struggle with.

Whether you’re a tech enthusiast, a student, a business leader, or just curious about where technology is going, this guide explains the latest breakthroughs in quantum computing in 2024 in a clear and conversational way, without requiring advanced math.

Let’s decode what actually happened and why it matters.

Quick Summary: 2024 Quantum Computing Breakthroughs

In 2024, quantum computing reached major milestones that pushed it closer to real-world use. Key breakthroughs included:

Practical quantum error correction

More stable and scalable quantum processors

Real-world industry applications

Integration of quantum computing with artificial intelligence (AI)

Expanded cloud-based access for developers and researchers

These advances moved quantum computing from theory toward commercial viability, marking 2024 as a true turning point for the industry.

What Is Quantum Computing (Quick Refresher)

Before diving into 2024’s breakthroughs, let’s level-set.

Traditional computers use bits, which are either:

0

1

Quantum computers use qubits, which can be:

0

1

or both at the same time (thanks to superposition)

They also use:

Entanglement – qubits influencing each other instantly

Quantum interference – amplifying correct results and canceling errors

This allows quantum computers to handle certain problems much faster than classical systems, at least in theory.

The big challenge is making them stable, accurate, and scalable. That’s where 2024 comes in.

For a detailed overview of quantum computing, see Wikipedia Quantum Computing

Key Quantum Computing Breakthroughs in 2024

2024 marked a turning point for quantum computing. Breakthroughs moved from theory to real-world progress. Researchers and tech companies made significant advances in stability, scalability, and usability. These improvements brought quantum systems closer to becoming commercially viable. The following breakthroughs highlight the key developments shaping the future of quantum computing.

Breakthrough #1: Major Advances in Quantum Error Correction

One of the biggest roadblocks in quantum computing has always been errors.

Qubits are incredibly sensitive:

Heat

Vibration

Electromagnetic noise

All of these can cause calculations to collapse.

What Changed in 2024?

In 2024, researchers demonstrated practical quantum error correction systems that:

Detect errors faster

Correct them in real time

Maintain qubit stability for longer durations

Instead of fixing individual qubits, scientists focused on logical qubits. These are groups of qubits that work together to act like one reliable unit.

Why this matters: Error correction is crucial for scaling quantum computers. Without it, building large-scale quantum machines is impossible. This marked a shift from “can we fix errors?” to “we know how, now let’s scale.”

Breakthrough #2: Quantum Processors Reached New Qubit Milestones

In 2024, several companies achieved record-breaking qubit counts while also improving performance, not just the numbers.

Key improvements included:

Higher qubit coherence times

Better gate fidelity (accuracy of operations)

More stable chip architectures

Instead of chasing qubit quantity alone, researchers focused on quality over quantity, a major mindset shift.

Why Qubit Quality Matters More Than Size

A smaller system with:

Low error rates

Stable qubits

Reliable gates

A smaller but stable quantum computer can outperform a larger, unstable one. This approach has brought quantum systems closer to solving real-world problems, rather than just demonstrating results in labs.

Breakthrough #3: Quantum Supremacy Became More Practical

Quantum supremacy, the point where a quantum computer surpasses classical computers, has been around for a while. However, in 2024, the conversation shifted.

Instead of abstract experiments, researchers demonstrated quantum advantage for practical workloads, including:

Optimization problems

Material simulations

Probabilistic modeling

These were not just “proofs.” They were practical demonstrations shaping how platforms are developed, including the role of web development in creating user-friendly dashboards and interfaces.

Why this matters: It showed that quantum computers can tackle problems relevant to:

Finance

Chemistry

Logistics

Artificial intelligence

This is where businesses started paying real attention.

Breakthrough #4: Quantum Computing and AI Began Converging

One of the most exciting trends of 2024 was the intersection of quantum computing and artificial intelligence.

Researchers explored:

Quantum-enhanced machine learning

Faster optimization for neural networks

Improved data sampling methods

Quantum systems showed promise in accelerating:

Training processes

Pattern recognition

Complex decision-making models

While still early, 2024 proved that quantum + AI isn’t science fiction anymore; it’s an active research frontier.

Breakthrough #5: Cloud-Based Quantum Access Expanded

In 2024, access to quantum computing became more democratized.

More platforms offered:

Cloud-based quantum processors

Open-source quantum SDKs

Educational sandboxes for developers

This meant:

Students could experiment without hardware

Startups could prototype quantum algorithms

Researchers could collaborate globally

Why this matters: Quantum innovation accelerates when access is open. 2024 significantly lowered the barrier to entry.

Breakthrough #6: Hybrid Quantum-Classical Computing Took Center Stage

Instead of replacing classical computers, 2024 showed that the future lies in hybrid systems.

These systems:

Use classical computers for control and preprocessing

Offload specific calculations to quantum processors

Combine the strengths of both worlds

Hybrid models proved to be more realistic, cost-effective, and scalable. This change helped organizations view quantum computing as an upgrade rather than a replacement.

Breakthrough #7: Real-World Industry Applications Emerged

Quantum computing in 2024 wasn’t just a lab story; it entered real industries.

Notable application areas included:

Drug discovery: Simulating molecular interactions

Materials science: Designing new batteries and superconductors

Finance: Portfolio optimization and risk modeling

Logistics: Route and supply chain optimization

While still experimental, 2024 showed clear pathways to commercial value.

Key Takeaways from 2024

Quantum computing moved from theory to real-world applications

Error correction and qubit stability advanced significantly

AI integration opened new frontiers for optimization

Early commercial use cases started to appear

What Quantum Computing Still Can’t Do (Yet)

Recently, I took a break from AI.

After 3.5 years of building, teaching, and breathing AI, I hit pause.

Not because AI isn’t exciting anymore

But because I am curious about what else the future is cooking.

So I have started exploring some mind-bending frontiers of technology:

• Quantum Computing

• Genetic Engineering

• Blockchain (beyond the hype, into real 2025+ use cases)

And, alongside AI, I will be sharing my learning from these domains as well in the following posts.

The aim would remain the same - explain complex tech topics in a simple language without any jargon.

In the next post, we will dive into Quantum concepts like:

• Qubits

Quantum Advantage: A Timeline

The concept of "quantum advantage" refers to the idea that a quantum computer can solve a specific problem significantly faster or more accurately than a classical computer. Achieving universal acceptance of quantum advantage will depend on various factors.

Several milestones have already been achieved in demonstrating quantum advantage:

Google's Quantum Supremacy (2019): Google claimed to have achieved quantum supremacy with their 53-qubit Sycamore processor, demonstrating a specific task (random circuit sampling) that was performed exponentially faster on a quantum computer than on a classical supercomputer.

Subsequent Demonstrations: Other organizations, such as Chinese researchers with their Jiuzhang photonic quantum computer (2020) and IBM with their quantum processors, have also demonstrated quantum advantage in various contexts.

However, universal acceptance of quantum advantage is still a subject of debate and depends on several conditions being met:

Practical Problem-Solving: Demonstrating quantum advantage on problems with practical applications is crucial. Currently, most demonstrations focus on contrived problems or benchmarks designed to showcase quantum capabilities.

Reproducibility and Verification: Independent verification and reproducibility of quantum advantage experiments are essential to establish credibility. This involves other researchers and organizations replicating the results.

Classical Algorithmic Advances: The development of more efficient classical algorithms can potentially undermine claims of quantum advantage. If classical computers can be made to perform similarly or better, the advantage is diminished.

Quantum Error Correction and Noise Reduction: Currently, many quantum computers are noisy and prone to errors. Developing robust methods for quantum error correction and noise reduction is critical for maintaining quantum advantage in practical applications.

Standards and Benchmarks: Establishing widely accepted standards and benchmarks for measuring quantum advantage will be necessary. This could involve the development of new metrics or the adaptation of existing ones to the quantum context.

Given these factors, universal acceptance of quantum advantage is likely to be a gradual process. It may take several years or even a decade or more for the concept to be widely accepted, as it will depend on continued advancements in quantum computing hardware, software, and algorithms, as well as the demonstration of practical applications.

Potential Timeline:

Short-term (2025-2030): Expect continued demonstrations of quantum advantage on specific problems, with a growing focus on practical applications.

Mid-term (2030-2040): As quantum technology matures, we may see more widespread adoption and demonstrations of quantum advantage in various fields, such as cryptography, optimization, and materials science.

Long-term (2040 and beyond): Universal acceptance of quantum advantage is likely to be achieved as quantum computing becomes more mainstream, and its applications are integrated into various industries.

Keep in mind that this is a speculative timeline and the actual development may be influenced by the pace of technological advancements, research breakthroughs, and the challenges that arise along the way.
