Interoperability by Evidence, Not by Copying Data: Coder Legion × Pastebin

Interoperability by Evidence, Not by Copying Data: Coder Legion × Pastebin

Interoperability is often described as an integration problem: connect two platforms, move data between them, and call it done.

For contributor systems, that is incomplete—and risky.

When Coder Legion needs to recognise work published on Pastebin, the goal is not to copy a contributor’s content into another database. The goal is to create a verifiable, privacy-aware relationship between an external artifact and a contributor record.

This is the design principle:

Keep the external artifact where it belongs. Store only the minimum evidence needed to verify its relationship to a contribution.

That principle gives us a practical interoperability model for Coder Legion and Pastebin.

The problem with naïve integrations

A naïve Pastebin integration usually does this:

Accept a Pastebin URL.

Fetch the paste.

Store its full text in the application database.

Attach it to a contributor profile.

It looks convenient, but it creates several problems:

It duplicates data that belongs to another service.

It can copy personal, confidential, or accidentally published material.

It makes retention and deletion responsibilities unclear.

It turns a URL into a trust claim without proving what was actually observed.

It cannot reliably distinguish a later-edited artifact from the one originally reviewed.

A better model treats Pastebin as an external evidence source—not as a storage backend.

A small, verifiable evidence envelope

Coder Legion can represent a Pastebin artifact with a compact evidence envelope:

{
  "source": "pastebin",
  "canonicalUrl": "https://pastebin.com/AbCdEf12",
  "externalId": "AbCdEf12",
  "contentHash": "sha256:...",
  "contentLength": 1842,
  "observedAt": "2026-10-11T14:00:00.000Z",
  "status": "OBSERVED"
}

The application stores:

the canonical external reference;

a stable external identifier where available;

a SHA-256 digest of the observed content;

bounded metadata such as byte length and observation time;

the verification state.

It does not store the full Pastebin text by default.

This creates a durable claim:

At a specific time, Coder Legion observed content at this external reference and calculated this digest.

That is auditable without silently replicating the artifact.

The interoperability flow

flowchart TD
  A["Contributor submits Pastebin URL"] --> B["Validate canonical URL"]
  B --> C["Fetch permitted raw content"]
  C --> D["Apply size and timeout limits"]
  D --> E["Compute SHA-256 digest"]
  E --> F["Create evidence record"]
  F --> G["Link to contribution or passport"]
  G --> H["Review / attest / reward"]

The workflow is intentionally narrow:

A contributor explicitly submits a Pastebin URL.

Coder Legion validates the host, format, and canonical Paste ID.

The bridge retrieves only the allowed raw representation.

The service enforces a maximum size, a strict timeout, and no redirects.

It computes a content hash.

It records an evidence envelope linked to the contribution.

A reviewer or defined policy can attest to it.

The external platform remains the source of the content. Coder Legion remains the source of the contribution and verification record.

Security boundaries are part of interoperability

Interoperability should not expand the attack surface.

A Pastebin bridge should enforce rules such as:

Control

Why it matters

Canonical host allowlist

Prevents arbitrary URL fetching and SSRF-style behaviour

HTTPS only

Protects retrieval integrity in transit

No redirects

Prevents a trusted-looking URL from reaching an untrusted destination

Short timeout

Prevents the integration from becoming a reliability dependency

Maximum response size

Prevents memory pressure and oversized imports

Hash-only persistence

Avoids unnecessary content replication

Explicit contributor consent

Ensures the contributor deliberately links the artifact

Idempotency key

Prevents duplicate evidence records for the same contribution and digest

A useful implementation shape is:

const MAX_BYTES = 256 * 1024;
const TIMEOUT_MS = 5000;

async function observePastebinArtifact({ canonicalUrl }) {
  const response = await fetch(toRawPastebinUrl(canonicalUrl), {
    redirect: 'error',
    signal: AbortSignal.timeout(TIMEOUT_MS)
  });

  if (!response.ok) {
    throw new Error(`Pastebin observation failed: ${response.status}`);
  }

  const body = await readBounded(response.body, MAX_BYTES);

  return {
    canonicalUrl,
    contentHash: `sha256:${sha256(body)}`,
    contentLength: body.length,
    observedAt: new Date().toISOString(),
    status: 'OBSERVED'
  };
}

The important detail is not the SDK. It is the boundary: content is observed, hashed, and discarded unless a separate policy explicitly authorises retention.

Contributor passports: proving participation without exposing private review data

The contributor-facing result is a digital passport: a public, limited projection of verified work.

A public passport can safely expose:

{
  "contributionId": "contrib_123",
  "category": "research",
  "reference": "https://pastebin.com/AbCdEf12",
  "status": "VERIFIED",
  "reviewedAt": "2026-10-11T14:12:00.000Z",
  "evidence": {
    "source": "pastebin",
    "contentHash": "sha256:...",
    "observedAt": "2026-10-11T14:00:00.000Z"
  }
}

It should not expose:

reviewer identity;

internal review notes;

private ledger references;

contributor authentication data;

wallet secrets, API keys, or tokens;

raw artifact text.

This is why public serialization must use an explicit allowlist—not “return the database object and remove a few known fields.”

Allowlisting makes the public contract deliberate and safe by default.

Bot passports use the same trust model

Coder Legion can use the same architecture for automated contributors and bots.

A bot passport can publish only accountable, non-secret facts:

{
  "botId": "bot_release_auditor",
  "displayName": "Release Auditor",
  "releaseHash": "sha256:...",
  "capabilities": ["repository-analysis", "evidence-validation"],
  "status": "ACTIVE"
}

The bot passport must reject secret-bearing input such as:

API keys;

access tokens;

private keys;

webhook secrets;

credentials;

unknown fields.

That matters because interoperability is not only about exchanging data. It is also about preserving accountability across human and automated contributors.

Verification, not publication

A Pastebin reference is not automatically a verified contribution.

The lifecycle should remain explicit:

SUBMITTED → OBSERVED → REVIEWED → VERIFIED
                         ↘ REJECTED

A hash proves that Coder Legion observed specific bytes. It does not prove authorship, accuracy, licensing, or value by itself.

Those decisions belong to a review process, attestation policy, or contributor program. Keeping the states separate prevents a technical observation from being misrepresented as a human or economic endorsement.

What this demonstrates

The Coder Legion × Pastebin model demonstrates interoperability at three levels:

Reference interoperability
An external Pastebin artifact can be linked through a canonical URL and stable identifier.

Integrity interoperability
The observed content is represented by a reproducible digest, so later checks can detect change.

Trust interoperability
The evidence can be linked to contributor or bot passports while retaining privacy boundaries and review states.

No proprietary replication format is required. No private credentials need to be published. No external content needs to be silently copied.

Conclusion

Good interoperability is not “import everything.”

For Coder Legion and Pastebin, it means creating a narrow evidence bridge:

contributor-initiated;

canonical and bounded;

hash-based;

privacy-preserving;

reviewable;

compatible with both human contributors and bots.

That produces a stronger system than a bulk sync: one where external work remains external, while the evidence of contribution remains verifiable.
