At 43, the Vietnamese IT Market Calls Me "Too Old" — I Still Write Code Every Day

Originally published at vnmlstudio.runasp.net

I'm 43 years old. Last week, a recruiter told me I'm "too old for the position" — politely, of course, but the message was clear.

I stopped applying 7 months ago. Not out of defeat — out of realization.

Instead of sending more CVs, I opened Visual Studio and started building something.

What I built

VNML Agent Framework — an open-source multi-agent AI system that runs 100% locally on my laptop with a GTX 3050 Ti and 4GB VRAM. No cloud. No API keys. No team. Just me and my machine.

The framework has 4 layers:

P0 Reflection — the agent critiques its own decisions before moving forward

P1 Planning — DAG-based multi-agent orchestration

P2 Learning — agents extract reusable skills from experience

P3 Synthesis — agents write and compile their own C# tools at runtime

Six months of work. On a laptop. On a CPU.

The moment I almost gave up

There were nights I sat in front of the screen asking myself: "How much longer can I keep doing this?"

Every rejection email felt like validation of a cruel joke the industry plays on developers over 35: "Your experience is valuable, but... we're looking for someone more junior."

I considered quitting tech. Driving for a ride-hailing app. Opening a small coffee shop. Anything that didn't require me to explain why my birth year is 1983.

But every time I felt like giving up, I opened Visual Studio again. And I wrote.

The moment Microsoft noticed

Two weeks ago, I typed
vnml agent framework
into Bing on a whim.

Microsoft Copilot Search returned a 200-word AI-generated summary of my project.

Not just a GitHub link. A full description that captured exactly what I'd built — architecture, tool synthesis, local execution, everything.

I read it three times. Then it hit me: one of the largest tech companies in the world had read my code, understood my architecture, and written about it.

Nobody called. No email. No announcement. Bing just crawled and indexed my public repo — like it does for every other project in the world.

But for me, that moment changed everything.

What I learned

1. README matters more than you think.
Copilot extracted 90% of its summary from my README. Clear structure → AI understands.

2. Personal blogs still have power.
Copilot cited my blog on
runasp.net
, not Medium, not Dev.to. Own your platform.

3. GitHub is a real SEO channel now.
Repos get read, understood, and summarized by AI. Nobody predicted this 5 years ago.

4. Nobody needs to give you permission.
You don't need a company to notice you. You don't need funding. You just need to build something real and publish it.

Why I'm writing this

Not for sympathy. Not for job offers.

For every developer out there who feels the industry has moved on without them. For every 40-something programmer who wonders if they should just become a manager or change careers.

The industry moves on. But the craft doesn't.

Age doesn't define the value of a developer. Persistence beats prejudice.

I'm 43. I have no team. No funding. No office. Just a laptop, an idea, and the stubborn refusal to stop.

And I still choose to write code. Every single day.

If you're building with local LLMs, connecting with the C# community, or just want to see what a solo dev can ship in 2026 — the full framework is open source:

🔗 GitHub: https://github.com/hoangnc/VNMLAgentFramework

I'd love to hear: what keeps you going when the industry says you don't belong anymore?

⚡ Consistency Over Motivation: What Actually Works

We all love the rush of motivation. That fire in your chest when you decide: “Today, I’m going to crush my goals!”

But here’s the truth: motivation is fleeting. You can feel unstoppable one day and completely drained the next. Relying on it to get things done? That’s a recipe for frustration.

The real secret to achieving anything? Consistency.

Motivation vs. Consistency
Think of it like this:

Motivation is a spark.
Consistency is the fire that keeps burning.
Motivation might get you started, but consistency gets you results.

“You don’t need to feel like doing it. You just need to do it — again and again.”

Why Small, Daily Actions Beat Big, Rare Efforts
Consistency compounds over time. That tiny action you do every day might feel meaningless today — but in a year? It’s transformative.

Writing 500 words daily → 182,500 words/year
Practicing a skill 30 minutes/day → 182 hours/year
Saving $5/day → $1,825/year
Small, consistent steps always outperform occasional bursts of enthusiasm.

5 Ways to Make Consistency Stick
Focus on Systems, Not Goals
Goals are results. Systems are the daily habits that produce them. Want to run a marathon? Focus on running 3 km every day, not just the finish line.
Start Small
Don’t aim for massive change instantly. Tiny habits = easy wins = momentum.
Track Your Progress
Streaks are motivating. Use a calendar, journal, or habit app. Seeing your consistency builds confidence. ✅
Prepare for Resistance
Some days you won’t feel like it. That’s normal. Consistency isn’t perfection — it’s persistence.
Remove Friction
Make good habits easy and bad habits harder. Want to read more? Keep a book on your pillow. Want to stop scrolling social media? Log out or block apps.
The Bottom Line
Motivation can give you a boost — but consistency is what transforms lives. You don’t wait for inspiration. You show up. Every. Single. Day.

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” — Robert Collier

Consistency > Motivation. Always.
