Building the TEYZIX CORE Internship Portal — My Full-Stack Development Journey

As part of my Full-Stack Web Development Internship task, I recently completed the TEYZIX CORE Internship Portal, a modern full-stack web application designed to help students explore internships, submit applications and interact with a clean and responsive system.

This project became a valuable learning experience for me because it allowed me to work on both frontend and backend development together in a real-world workflow.

Project Overview

The main objective of this project was to build a functional internship portal where users can:

View available internships

Apply through an online form

Submit their information

Store application data

Allow admin-side application management

The system was designed with a modern responsive interface and smooth user experience in mind.

Technologies Used

Frontend

React.js

Tailwind CSS

Vite

Backend

Node.js

Express.js

Database

MongoDB Memory Server (Temporary Development Database)

Features Implemented

✔ Responsive Modern UI

✔ Dark Mode Support

✔ Internship Listings

✔ Application Form System

✔ Admin Dashboard

✔ REST API Integration

✔ Full-Stack Architecture

✔ Reusable React Components

✔ Clean Folder Structure

✔ GitHub Version Control

✔ Frontend Deployment on Vercel

Development Challenges

One of the biggest challenges during this project was database integration and deployment.

Initially, I planned to use MongoDB Atlas as the cloud database solution. However, due to resource limitations and free-tier restrictions, I could not fully configure a production cloud database environment for this project.

To continue development and complete the system professionally, I implemented a temporary in-memory MongoDB solution using:

mongodb-memory-server

This allowed me to:

test backend APIs

manage application flow

simulate real database behavior

continue full-stack development smoothly

Although the current database setup is temporary, the entire backend architecture is fully prepared for future production database integration.

This experience helped me understand:

backend architecture

API handling

database flow

environment configuration

deployment structure

real-world debugging

Frontend Deployment

The frontend version of the project was successfully deployed using Vercel.

During deployment, I also faced build configuration and routing issues, especially related to:

Vite build commands

frontend-only deployment

API connection handling

routing configuration

Solving these problems improved my understanding of production deployment workflows.

What I Learned

This project helped me improve my skills in:

Full-Stack Development

React Project Structure

API Integration

Backend Development

Debugging

Deployment

Responsive UI Design

Git & GitHub Workflow

Real Project Architecture

More importantly, it gave me confidence in building complete full-stack systems independently.

Final Thoughts

The TEYZIX CORE Internship Portal is not just another practice project for me. It represents practical learning, consistency, debugging experience, and real-world development exposure.

I still plan to improve this system further by:

integrating a production database

adding authentication

improving admin analytics

enhancing dashboard functionality

adding advanced filtering and search

This journey was a great learning experience, and I’m excited to continue building more modern full-stack applications in the future.

Building an AI-Powered Expense Tracker with the MERN Stack

Building an AI-Powered Expense Tracker with MERN + LLaMA 3.3 + Groq

Managing personal finances is a common challenge, and most expense trackers stop at basic logging and charts. I wanted to go further by building an application that not only tracks expenses but also analyzes spending behavior and provides intelligent financial insights.

This led to the development of my AI-Powered Expense Tracker — a full-stack MERN application enhanced with an AI financial coach powered by LLaMA 3.3 and Groq.

In this article, I’ll walk through the idea, architecture, core features, and lessons learned while building this project.

Project Overview

The AI-Powered Expense Tracker is a personal finance management application that helps users:

Track daily expenses

Visualize spending patterns

Set and monitor budgets

Receive intelligent, AI-driven financial insights

The application is designed to be:

Secure

Responsive

Offline-friendly

User-centric

making it usable across both desktop and mobile devices.

Live Project:
https://adithyan-phi.vercel.app/project/expense-tracker

✨ Core Features

Expense Tracking

Users can add, edit, and delete expenses with clear categorization such as Food, Travel, Bills, and more. Each transaction is stored securely and reflected in real time on the dashboard.

Dashboard & Visual Analytics

The dashboard provides:

Monthly spending breakdowns

Recent transactions

Savings and spending trends

Charts and graphs make it easy to understand financial habits at a glance.

Budget Management

Users can set monthly budgets and optionally enable 50/30/20 rule analysis (Needs, Wants, Savings). The system continuously evaluates spending against these limits.

Secure Authentication & Notifications

Email OTP Verification

Signup includes a two-step email OTP verification with a 10-minute countdown timer, ensuring valid user accounts.

JWT-Based Authentication

JSON Web Tokens (JWT) are used for secure session management and protected routes.

Smart Budget Alerts

Users receive email notifications when they reach:

30%

50%

90%

100%

of their budget.

These alerts use dark-themed rich HTML templates, displaying total spent and remaining balance.

Progressive Web App (PWA) Support

To improve accessibility and usability:

Installable on mobile and desktop

Cached dashboards and reports available offline

Dedicated privacy policy page via footer

Fully responsive design

Light and dark themes, including custom Yellow/Black themes

AI Integration: The Financial Coach

The most unique aspect of this project is its AI layer.

AI Financial Coach (LLaMA 3.3 + Groq)

Users can interact with a conversational AI and ask questions like:

“Analyze my food spending”

“How can I save more this month?”

The AI processes actual user data to generate personalized insights.

Intelligent Capabilities

Localized financial advice strictly in Indian Rupees (₹)

Detection of unusual or anomalous spending

Identification of potential recurring subscriptions

Actionable savings strategies

AI-assisted auto-categorization of expenses

This transforms the app from a tracker into a financial assistant.

Tech Stack

Frontend

React.js — Component-based UI

Vite — Fast development and build tooling

VitePWA — Offline support and installability

Backend

Node.js & Express.js — Server and API layer

MongoDB & Mongoose — Database and schema modeling

JWT — Authentication and authorization

Nodemailer — OTP and budget alert emails

AI / ML

Groq SDK — High-performance inference

LLaMA 3.3 — Financial analysis and conversational intelligence

Key Challenges & Learnings

Designing a scalable data model for expenses and budgets

Managing authentication flows securely with OTPs and JWT

Ensuring AI responses were accurate, contextual, and localized

Optimizing performance for dashboards and charts

Implementing offline support without breaking user experience

This project reinforced the importance of:

Clean architecture

Thoughtful UX

Incremental feature development

✅ Final Thoughts

Building this AI-Powered Expense Tracker helped me deepen my understanding of:

Full-stack MERN development

Authentication systems

Progressive Web Apps

Real-world AI integration

More importantly, it demonstrated how AI can add genuine value when combined with meaningful user data.

If you’re learning the MERN stack, I strongly recommend building projects that solve real problems and pushing beyond basic CRUD functionality.

What I Learned While Building My First MERN Stack Project

When I started building my first MERN stack project, I underestimated how many small details go into a real-world application. I knew the basics of React, Node.js, Express, and MongoDB, but combining everything into one working system was a different experience altogether.

One of the biggest lessons I learned was the importance of planning. Initially, I jumped straight into coding without clearly defining features or API structure, which led to frequent changes and bugs. Over time, I realized that even a simple feature list and basic data models can save a lot of time.

Working on the backend taught me how critical error handling and validation are. Things rarely go wrong in tutorials, but in real projects, unexpected inputs and edge cases appear quickly. Implementing proper validation and meaningful error messages made the application more stable and easier to debug.

On the frontend side, I learned the value of breaking the UI into reusable components. At first, my components became too large and hard to manage. Refactoring them into smaller pieces improved both readability and scalability.

Another important takeaway was the role of debugging and logging. Console logs, network tab inspection, and backend logs became essential tools rather than last-resort options.

Overall, building my first MERN stack project helped me understand how different parts of an application communicate with each other. It wasn’t perfect, but it gave me practical experience that tutorials alone could not provide. If you’re a beginner, my advice is to start small, accept mistakes, and learn by building.

Why MERN Stack is Still a Top Choice for Web Development in 2025

The MERN Stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, Node.js) remains one of the most powerful and flexible tech stacks for building modern web applications. With its full JavaScript-based ecosystem, developers can build fast, scalable, and dynamic applications seamlessly. But with the rise of newer technologies, is MERN still a valid choice in 2025? Absolutely, and here’s why:

1️⃣ Full-Stack JavaScript Advantage

MERN allows developers to work with JavaScript throughout the stack, reducing the learning curve and making development faster. With a single language across frontend and backend, code reusability and efficiency increase significantly. Developers can build real-time, interactive applications while maintaining consistency in their tech stack.

Moreover, using JavaScript end-to-end means that teams don’t need to hire separate frontend and backend developers. A single MERN developer can handle the entire application, saving costs and improving workflow efficiency. This makes it an excellent choice for startups and businesses that want to scale quickly without increasing development complexity.

2️⃣ High Performance & Scalability

Node.js, the backend technology of MERN, ensures non-blocking, event-driven architecture, making it ideal for handling real-time applications like chat apps, live notifications, and collaborative tools. MongoDB’s NoSQL structure allows for flexible and scalable data handling, making it an excellent database solution for applications that need to manage vast amounts of unstructured or semi-structured data.

React.js, the frontend framework, offers a component-based structure that promotes reusability and better state management. With tools like React Hooks and Context API, developers can efficiently manage application state and ensure smooth performance, even as the project grows.

3️⃣ Rich Ecosystem & Community Support

MERN has a massive community of developers and open-source contributors, ensuring continuous improvements, security patches, and extensive documentation. Developers have access to countless third-party libraries, tools, and pre-built components, which significantly speeds up development and allows for seamless integrations with other technologies.

In addition, platforms like GitHub, Stack Overflow, and Dev.to are filled with MERN Stack discussions, tutorials, and real-world case studies. This means developers can quickly find solutions to challenges, stay updated with the latest advancements, and contribute to improving the ecosystem.

4️⃣ Perfect for Modern Web Applications

MERN Stack is ideal for developing a wide range of web applications, including:

✅ Single Page Applications (SPA) – Fast-loading, responsive apps with seamless navigation
.
✅ eCommerce Platforms – Secure and scalable shopping experiences with integrated payment gateways.

✅ SaaS (Software as a Service) Applications – High-performance, cloud-based applications.

✅ Real-Time Applications – Messaging platforms, collaborative tools, and live streaming services.

✅ Enterprise Dashboards – Data-driven analytics tools with real-time updates.

Best Databases to Use with the MERN Stack Apart from MongoDB

The MERN stack (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js) has become one of the most popular choices for modern web development due to its flexibility, scalability, and the ease with which the technologies work together. MongoDB is the default database for many MERN stack developers, primarily because it is a NoSQL database and integrates seamlessly with Node.js. However, MongoDB isn’t the only option available for building a robust, scalable backend. Depending on your project’s requirements, you might prefer to use a different database.

In this article, we will explore the best databases to use with the MERN stack, apart from MongoDB. Each database has its unique strengths and can be an excellent choice for specific use cases, from relational data management to high scalability and real-time applications. Whether you're building a large-scale enterprise application or a small personal project, there’s a database that will suit your needs.

1. PostgreSQL: A Powerful Relational Database

PostgreSQL is an open-source, object-relational database system that is widely regarded for its stability, extensibility, and support for advanced SQL features. If your application requires complex queries, a high level of data integrity, or sophisticated transaction handling, PostgreSQL is an excellent choice. It is fully ACID-compliant, which ensures that transactions are processed reliably, even in the event of a system crash.

PostgreSQL is not only known for its SQL features but also its ability to handle JSON data types through its JSONB feature. This gives developers the flexibility to combine the structure of SQL with the unstructured nature of NoSQL, making it ideal for hybrid applications. If your project involves extensive data relationships, PostgreSQL's support for foreign keys, joins, and transactions ensures a solid foundation for building complex, data-driven applications.

When integrating PostgreSQL with a MERN stack, you can use Node.js libraries such as pg or ORM frameworks like Sequelize or TypeORM for a more structured approach. These tools allow you to interact with PostgreSQL using JavaScript, making it easy to manage the database and implement queries directly within your Node.js backend.

2. MySQL: A Highly Efficient Relational Database

MySQL is another widely used relational database that has been a staple in the development world for decades. Known for its speed and reliability, MySQL is a strong contender for any application that requires structured data storage and SQL querying. It is particularly useful for applications that handle a large number of read and write operations, such as e-commerce platforms, content management systems, and business applications.

One of MySQL's standout features is its performance, especially when it comes to handling read-heavy applications. For projects that involve a large number of concurrent users or need fast access to data, MySQL provides excellent scalability options through indexing and query optimization techniques.

MySQL also supports replication, which means you can set up master-slave configurations for load balancing and increased reliability. This makes it an excellent choice for building high-traffic applications. If your project relies on relational data and complex queries, MySQL is a solid option for your MERN stack backend.

Integrating MySQL with MERN can be done using libraries like mysql2 or using ORM tools like Sequelize or TypeORM, which allow developers to interact with MySQL using JavaScript and simplify the management of data relationships.

3. SQLite: Lightweight and Serverless

SQLite is a lightweight, file-based database that doesn’t require a dedicated server. It’s an excellent choice for small-scale applications, mobile apps, or for use in development and testing environments. While SQLite isn’t suitable for applications that need to scale horizontally or handle heavy concurrent traffic, it is ideal for situations where simplicity and ease of use are paramount.

SQLite is embedded directly into the application, making it easy to set up and use without the overhead of managing a separate database server. It is commonly used in mobile applications or small web apps that don’t require a full-fledged database management system.

When working with SQLite in the MERN stack, you can use the sqlite3 package in Node.js, or you can opt for an ORM like Sequelize, which allows you to define models and perform database operations seamlessly within your application.

4. Cassandra: A NoSQL Database for High Scalability

Cassandra is a distributed NoSQL database designed to handle huge amounts of data across many servers. It is built to provide high availability, scalability, and fault tolerance, making it ideal for applications that need to handle large volumes of data and ensure uptime even during network failures or server outages. If your application requires a highly scalable, fault-tolerant solution, Cassandra might be the right choice.

Unlike MongoDB, which stores documents, Cassandra uses a column-family store to organize data. This makes it particularly well-suited for time-series data, real-time analytics, or applications that require fast writes and large data sets. Cassandra is used by companies like Netflix, Instagram, and Spotify for managing their massive datasets at scale.

Integrating Cassandra with your MERN stack can be done using the cassandra-driver for Node.js. This driver allows you to connect to Cassandra, perform queries, and manage data within your backend.

5. Redis: A High-Performance In-Memory Store

Redis is an in-memory data store that can be used as a cache, session store, or for real-time data processing. While Redis isn’t typically used as a primary database for storing persistent data, it’s highly effective for scenarios where low-latency access to data is critical. Redis excels at handling high-throughput workloads and can store a wide range of data types, including strings, hashes, lists, sets, and sorted sets.

Redis is commonly used in applications that require fast data retrieval, such as caching frequently accessed data, managing user sessions, or handling real-time data for messaging or notification systems. It can also be used to store application state or for pub/sub messaging between services.

To integrate Redis with MERN, you can use the ioredis or redis Node.js clients. These libraries make it easy to connect Redis to your Node.js backend and implement caching, sessions, and real-time features.

6. Firebase Firestore: Real-Time NoSQL Database

Firebase Firestore is a cloud-based NoSQL database developed by Google. It provides real-time data synchronization across multiple devices and offline data persistence, which makes it ideal for mobile apps or applications that require real-time updates. Firestore is part of the broader Firebase ecosystem, which includes authentication, hosting, and cloud functions, making it a powerful tool for building full-stack applications.

Firestore is particularly useful for applications that require automatic syncing of data across devices, such as collaborative apps, chat applications, or apps with live updates. The real-time features in Firestore allow for seamless user experiences, where data updates reflect instantly without needing to refresh the app.

Integration with MERN is straightforward, as Firebase provides an official SDK that can be easily used in your Node.js backend. Firebase also offers SDKs for React, which makes it simple to integrate Firestore into the front end of your MERN stack application.

7. CouchDB: A Document-Based NoSQL Database

CouchDB is another document-based NoSQL database that uses JSON for data storage. CouchDB is designed with replication and synchronization in mind, making it an excellent choice for apps that need offline capabilities or peer-to-peer data syncing. It is known for its simplicity, reliability, and ease of use. CouchDB supports MapReduce for views, which can be used to aggregate data.

Similar to MongoDB, CouchDB stores JSON documents but offers a unique set of features for working with distributed data. If your application needs easy replication across multiple nodes or offline data access, CouchDB might be an ideal fit.

To integrate CouchDB into your MERN stack, you can use libraries like nano or pouchdb, which make it easy to interact with the database from your Node.js application.

8. Neo4j: A Graph Database for Connected Data

Neo4j is a graph database that is specifically designed to store and query highly connected data. It’s an ideal choice for applications that need to work with complex relationships, such as social networks, recommendation engines, and fraud detection systems. Instead of using rows and columns, Neo4j stores data as nodes and edges, which are linked to each other through relationships.

If your MERN stack application requires handling of highly interconnected data, such as modeling relationships between users, products, and transactions, Neo4j is a powerful solution. Neo4j’s Cypher query language allows you to query graph data intuitively and efficiently, making it a great choice for applications that need to explore complex relationships between entities.

Neo4j can be integrated with MERN using the official neo4j-driver for Node.js, which allows you to query the graph database directly from your backend and incorporate it into your application.

Building the Backend of Chatty - A Real-Time MERN WebSocket Chat App

Chatty is a real-time chat application built using the MERN stack and WebSockets to enable seamless and instant communication. A strong backend is essential for ensuring real-time messaging, authentication, and database management, creating a reliable and scalable chat experience.

In this blog, I’ll cover:

✅ Setting up WebSockets with socket.io for real-time updates

✅ JWT authentication for secure user sessions

✅ Storing messagesvefficiently in MongoDB

This is only an overview of the code; for the complete implementation, check out the GitHub repo linked at the end!

1. Setting Up the Backend

The backend is built using Node.js & Express.js. To get started, install the necessary dependencies:

npm init -y

npm install express mongoose dotenv socket.io jsonwebtoken bcryptjs cors

Initializing the server:

import express from "express";
import http from "http";
import { Server } from "socket.io";
import mongoose from "mongoose";
import dotenv from "dotenv";
import cors from "cors";
import authRoutes from "./routes/authRoutes.js";
import chatRoutes from "./routes/chatRoutes.js";
dotenv.config();
const app = express();
const server = http.createServer(app);
const io = new Server(server, { cors: { origin: "*" } });
app.use(express.json());
app.use(cors());
app.use("/api/auth", authRoutes);
app.use("/api/chat", chatRoutes);
server.listen(5000, () => console.log("Server running on port 5000"));

2. Implementing WebSocket for Real-Time Messaging

WebSockets allow for bi-directional real-time communication, ensuring that messages are instantly delivered to all connected users.

`io.on("connection", (socket) => {

console.log("User connected:", socket.id);
socket.on("sendMessage", (messageData) => {
    io.emit("receiveMessage", messageData); // Broadcast message to all clients
});
socket.on("disconnect", () => {
    console.log("User disconnected");
});

}); `

3. Implementing JWT Authentication

To ensure user security, we implement JWT-based authentication for login and protected routes.

User Model (models/User.js)

`import mongoose from "mongoose";
import bcrypt from "bcryptjs";
const UserSchema = new mongoose.Schema({

username: { type: String, required: true, unique: true },
password: { type: String, required: true }

});
UserSchema.pre("save", async function (next) {

if (!this.isModified("password")) return next();
this.password = await bcrypt.hash(this.password, 10);
next();

});
export default mongoose.model("User", UserSchema);
`

Auth Controllers (controllers/authController.js)

`import jwt from "jsonwebtoken";
import bcrypt from "bcryptjs";
import User from "../models/User.js";
dotenv.config();
export const registerUser = async (req, res) => {

try {
    const { username, password } = req.body;
    const newUser = new User({ username, password });
    await newUser.save();
    res.status(201).json({ message: "User registered successfully" });
} catch (error) {
    res.status(500).json({ error: error.message });
}

};
export const loginUser = async (req, res) => {

try {
    const { username, password } = req.body;
    const user = await User.findOne({ username });
    if (!user || !await bcrypt.compare(password, user.password)) {
        return res.status(401).json({ message: "Invalid credentials" });
    }
    const token = jwt.sign({ id: user._id }, process.env.JWT_SECRET, { expiresIn: "1h" });
    res.json({ token, user });
} catch (error) {
    res.status(500).json({ error: error.message });
}

}; `

4. Storing Messages in MongoDB

Chat messages need to be stored persistently so users can retrieve past conversations.

Message Model (models/Message.js)

`import mongoose from "mongoose";
const MessageSchema = new mongoose.Schema({

sender: { type: mongoose.Schema.Types.ObjectId, ref: "User" },
content: { type: String, required: true },
timestamp: { type: Date, default: Date.now }

});
export default mongoose.model("Message", MessageSchema);`

Message Controller (controllers/chatController.js)

`import Message from "../models/Message.js";
export const saveMessage = async (req, res) => {

try {
    const { sender, content } = req.body;
    const message = new Message({ sender, content });
    await message.save();
    res.status(201).json({ message: "Message saved successfully" });
} catch (error) {
    res.status(500).json({ error: error.message });
}`

Final Thoughts & Contribution

That’s how Chatty’s backend is structured! We covered:

Real-time WebSockets for instant messaging

JWT authentication to enhance security

Efficient message storage in MongoDB

This is only an overview of the code; for the complete implementation, check out the GitHub repo! The full repository contains additional optimizations, error handling, and best practices to ensure the app runs smoothly at scale.

Introduction to Chatty - A Real-Time MERN WebSocket Chat App

Communication has evolved significantly over the years, and real-time chat applications have become a necessity in the digital world. Whether for personal conversations, team collaborations, or customer support, users expect instant messaging with zero lag. As a MERN stack developer, I wanted to build a scalable and efficient chat app that delivers a seamless user experience. That’s how Chatty was born! In this blog post, I’ll introduce you to Chatty, its core features, the technology stack behind it, and why WebSockets are a game-changer for real-time applications.

What is Chatty?

Chatty is a real-time chat application built using the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React, and Node.js) with WebSockets to enable instant, two-way communication. Unlike traditional chat apps that rely on HTTP polling (which can be slow and inefficient), Chatty leverages WebSockets to create a persistent connection, allowing users to send and receive messages in real-time without delays.

Key Features of Chatty:

Instant Messaging: Powered by WebSockets, ensuring fast and real-time
communication .

User Authentication with JWT: Secure login system to protect user data .

Optimized Backend: Efficient handling of connections and message storage.
-Dockerized Deployment: Easily scalable and deployable with Docker containers.

Why Did I Build Chatty?

As a developer, I wanted to tackle some of the biggest challenges in real-time communication:

✅ Latency Issues: Many chat apps experience delays in delivering messages. WebSockets allow a persistent full-duplex connection, ensuring messages are delivered instantly without waiting for a new HTTP request.

✅ Efficient Data Handling: Traditional chat applications send repeated HTTP requests (polling) to check for new messages. This approach is resource-intensive and inefficient. With WebSockets, a single connection remains open, drastically reducing overhead.

✅ Secure Authentication: Handling user authentication securely is crucial. I implemented JWT-based authentication, ensuring only authorized users can access chat rooms and messages.

✅ Scalability: With Dockerized deployment, Chatty can run in isolated containers, making it easy to scale across multiple servers when user traffic grows.

Building Chatty helped me deepen my understanding of WebSockets, authentication, and containerization while applying best practices for real-world application development.

Tech Stack Behind Chatty

To create a high-performance and scalable real-time chat application, I chose the following technologies:

Frontend: React.js (for an interactive and smooth user experience)

Backend: Node.js & Express.js (handling real-time messaging with WebSockets)

Database: MongoDB (storing user messages, conversations, and profiles)

WebSockets: Socket.io (enabling real-time chat functionality)

Authentication: JWT (ensuring secure login and user validation)

Docker: Containerizing the app for better deployment, scalability, and maintainability

Each of these technologies plays a crucial role in making Chatty efficient, scalable, and user-friendly. By combining React, WebSockets, and Docker, I was able to build a real-time chat app that is both performant and easy to deploy.

Contribute to Chatty

Chatty is open-source, and I’d love for you to check it out! You can find the code on GitHub:

Chatty Github Repo⭐

If you find this project helpful, please give it a star ⭐ on GitHub and feel free to contribute! Whether it's fixing a bug, adding a feature, or improving documentation, all contributions are welcome. Let's build something amazing together!

What’s Next?

This is just the beginning! In the next blog post, I’ll dive into setting up the backend, where we’ll explore how to create a WebSocket server using Node.js, Express, and Socket.io. I’ll walk you through establishing real-time communication, handling events, and storing messages efficiently.

Are you also building a chat app or curious about WebSockets? Let’s connect and discuss your experience!
