Eight Months, One Opportunity, A Lot of Learning — Amita Sharma’s Journey from QA to Development

Dev Journey | CoderLegion

Starting your first job can be both exciting and intimidating.

You have spent years studying, learning technologies, completing projects, and preparing for that first opportunity. But when you finally walk into a real workplace, everything can suddenly feel different.

Will I be able to do the work?

Will I understand what everyone is talking about?

What happens when I make a mistake?

For Amita Sharma, her first opportunity came through a college placement drive during her final year.

She went into the process without knowing exactly where it would lead. After an assignment test and two rounds of interviews, she was offered a six-month internship as a QA.

What started as her first corporate experience eventually became much more than that.

Over the next eight months, Amita worked on a real product, learned the fundamentals of quality assurance, discovered the importance of thinking beyond obvious test cases, and eventually got the opportunity to contribute to the development side of the same product.

Today, her experience spans QA, testing, development, and an increasing interest in AI-driven testing.

This is the story of how one opportunity helped her discover that she could do more than she initially thought.

Getting the First Opportunity

Eight months ago, I walked into a college placement drive with honestly no idea where it would take me.

There was an assignment test, followed by two interview rounds. I cleared them and was eventually offered a six-month internship as a QA.

Since it was my final year of college, getting a job before graduating was already a big thing for me.

But getting the offer was one thing, and actually starting was another.

It was my first corporate experience, so I was nervous.

I had so many questions in my head.

Would I be able to do the work?

Would I understand everything?

How would I fit into a completely new environment?

Thankfully, the first few days made things much easier.

Everyone was really welcoming, the team was approachable, and I never felt like I had to figure everything out on my own.

Once the training started and I began working on an actual product, the real learning began.

Discovering What QA Really Involves

When I joined, I had a pretty basic understanding of QA.

Test the feature, find bugs, report them.

But working on QAlity showed me how much more there was to it.

I started working on different features and workflows, reporting and retesting bugs, doing regression testing, and slowly learning to think beyond the obvious scenarios.

I began to understand that testing isn't simply about finding something that doesn't work.

It's about thinking about how people might actually use a product.

What happens if someone takes an unexpected path?

What happens if they enter something you didn't anticipate?

What happens when a new feature interacts with something that was already working?

Those questions gradually became part of the way I approached testing.

The Excitement of Finding My First Bug

I still remember finding my first bug.

It was honestly such a small thing, but I was so happy when I found it.

I don't even know why I was that excited, but I think it was because it made everything feel real.

I was actually testing a product.

I had found something that wasn't working as expected.

And I knew what to do with it.

It was a small moment, but for me it was an important one.

It made me feel like I was no longer just learning about QA.

I was actually doing it.

Learning From a Mentor

My mentor had a big part in helping me get there.

Whenever I got stuck, I had someone to ask, but I was also encouraged to think things through myself.

A simple question like:

"What about this scenario?"

would sometimes send me back to the feature and make me look at it differently.

At first, I needed guidance to figure things out.

Gradually, I became more confident in figuring things out on my own.

That was one of the biggest changes I noticed in myself.

The goal wasn't simply to have someone give me the answer.

It was learning how to find the answer myself.

An Unexpected Turn: From QA to Development

And then my role took a direction I hadn't expected.

Along with QA, I got the opportunity to work on the development side of QAlity too.

I worked on the UI and created pages for the product, which gave me a chance to understand QAlity from a completely different perspective.

That experience was especially valuable because I got to see both sides of the product.

I understood what went into building a feature and also what I needed to think about when testing it.

It gave me a much broader experience than I had imagined when I first joined.

Instead of seeing development and testing as completely separate activities, I started understanding how closely they are connected.

Building something gives you one perspective.

Testing it gives you another.

Having the opportunity to experience both helped me understand the product much more deeply.

Eight Months Later

Now, eight months later, I can see how much has changed.

I came in wondering whether I would be able to do the job.

Today, I have worked on QAlity as a QA, contributed to its development, built UI pages, and taken on things that I wouldn't have imagined myself doing on day one.

Looking back, the biggest change isn't just the number of things I've learned.

It's the confidence I've gained from actually doing them.

The things that seemed intimidating at the beginning gradually became things I knew how to approach.

What I Would Tell Someone Starting Their First Job

If there's one thing I'd tell someone starting their first job, it's to give yourself some time.

You don't have to know everything from the beginning.

Ask questions.

Learn from the people around you.

Take feedback.

And don't hesitate to try something new just because you've never done it before.

Your first job isn't about proving that you already know everything.

It's about learning how to learn in a real environment.

More Than Just a First Job

When I think about these eight months, I don't just think about the work I did.

I think about how much that first opportunity opened up for me.

I joined as a QA intern, but along the way I got to explore development too, learn from some really good people, and discover that I could do more than I initially thought.

And honestly, I think that's what makes these eight months so special to me.

I came here with a lot to learn, and I'm leaving this phase with a lot more experience, confidence, and curiosity about what comes next.

Eight Weeks From Classroom to Production: My Software Engineering Internship Journey

What I learned building a real talent funnel from SRS and Figma to QA, handover, and closing without a perfect ending.

Hey everyone,

If you followed my weekly Hashnode series, you already know the short version: eight weeks, one real product, a lot of shipping, and a quieter finale than I expected.

This post is the longer reflection on the whole arc in one place.

Series link: My Software Engineering Internship Journey

How it started

Week 1 did not feel like “writing production code on day one.” It felt like orientation into a different kind of seriousness.

We were not building toys. We were joining a live talent funnel product, the Talent Funnel, where candidates move through discovery, onboarding, assessments, and interviews, while admins need tools they can trust.

Before the flashy UI work, there was the quieter foundation work: requirements, diagrams, architecture conversations, and learning how classroom theory behaves once real stakeholders and real timelines enter the room.

That first week taught me something I kept rediscovering: industry work is less about knowing everything, and more about becoming useful quickly without breaking what already exists.

The middle: building for real users

Across the middle weeks, the work widened fast.

We moved through:

requirements and data architecture

monorepo structure and type-safe environments

custom auth and onboarding flows

candidate home hubs, assessment surfaces, and UI states

landing pages, hierarchy polish, and painful but necessary rework

admin portals, route hardening, and access control

Some weeks felt like invention. Others felt like correction.

Week 5 especially stuck with me: being right about a UI direction did not always protect the work from being redone. Branch overlap, merge calls, and scope cleanup taught me more than the feature itself. That was uncomfortable. It was also one of the most useful lessons of the internship.

By Weeks 6 and 7, the focus shifted again from “can we build this?” to “can this survive without scaffolding?” We migrated out of temporary paths, cleaned legacy naming, unified branding, hardened staff access, improved analytics and candidate summaries, and started thinking about handover as part of engineering, not as an afterthought.

What the work actually looked like

If I had to name the through-line of my internship, it would be consistency.

Not just visual consistency. Product consistency.

Making routes make sense. Making emails point to real places. Making settings and permissions match how staff actually work. Making responsive layouts behave on phones, not only on laptops. Making localization expose every missing string before a user does. Shipping in related batches instead of one giant pile that nobody can review.

Those details do not always look impressive in a weekly update. They are what make a product feel intentional.

How it ended

Week 8 was the finale: QA, test documentation, and project handover.

As a team, we closed the project. We did not get full client feedback before we wrapped. That is the honest part. Timelines move. Stakeholders are busy. Final reviews do not always land when you hope they will.

Even so, we know they appreciated the work. That appreciation showed up in the collaboration, the trust, and the way the product kept moving forward with us. A long written review would have been nice. Knowing the work mattered still counts.

Closing without a cinematic ending taught me something I did not expect to learn so clearly:

Finishing well is not the same as finishing loudly.

Sometimes a good ending looks like regression checks, documented test cases, known issues written down honestly, and a handover package that lets the next engineers continue without reconstructing the story from commit messages alone.

What I take with me

I leave with more than a portfolio of screens.

I leave with better instincts around:

shipping in related batches

treating documentation as part of delivery

seeing responsive UI, localization, and access control as product integrity, not polish

treating merge conflicts, CI surprises, and overlapping branches as the work itself

measuring progress not only by what I can build, but by whether someone else can continue after me

Somewhere between Week 1 and Week 8, I stopped thinking of an internship as a sequence of tasks. I started seeing it as practice in becoming leaveable, leaving systems, decisions, and context in a state where the team can keep going.

If you are starting your own internship

A few things I would tell my Week 1 self:

Ask for context early. Why a decision exists matters as much as how to implement it.

Expect rework. Being right once does not freeze the product forever.

Write things down while they are still fresh. Future you and future teammates need that.

Care about the unglamorous paths: empty states, mobile, permissions,
broken links.

Learn to close. Shipping is not only starting features. It is also QA, honesty about risk, and handover.

Closing

Internships end. Products keep going.

I am proud of what we built, proud of how we closed, and grateful for the team, mentors, and trust that made the experience real.

If you want the week-by-week story, start here:
My Software Engineering Internship Journey

Building the TEYZIX CORE Internship Portal - My Full-Stack Development

As part of my Full-Stack Web Development Internship task, I recently completed and deployed the TEYZIX CORE Internship Portal, a modern full-stack web application designed to help students explore internships, submit applications and interact with a clean and responsive system.

This project became a valuable learning experience for me because it allowed me to work on both frontend and backend development together in a real-world workflow.

Project Overview

The main objective of this project was to build a functional internship portal where users can:

View available internships

Apply through an online form

Submit their information

Store application data

Allow admin-side application management

The system was designed with a modern responsive interface and smooth user experience in mind.

Technologies Used

Frontend

React.js

Tailwind CSS

Vite

Backend

Node.js

Express.js

Database

MongoDB Memory Server (Temporary Development Database)

Features Implemented

✔ Responsive Modern UI
✔ Dark Mode Support
✔ Internship Listings
✔ Application Form System
✔ Admin Dashboard
✔ REST API Integration
✔ Full-Stack Architecture
✔ Reusable React Components
✔ Clean Folder Structure
✔ GitHub Version Control
✔ Frontend Deployment on Vercel

Development Challenges

One of the biggest challenges during this project was database integration and deployment.

Initially, I planned to use MongoDB Atlas as the cloud database solution. However, due to resource limitations and free-tier restrictions, I could not fully configure a production cloud database environment for this project.

To continue development and complete the system professionally, I implemented a temporary in-memory MongoDB solution using:

mongodb-memory-server

This allowed me to:

test backend APIs

manage application flow

simulate real database behavior

continue full-stack development smoothly

Although the current database setup is temporary, the entire backend architecture is fully prepared for future production database integration.

This experience helped me understand:

backend architecture

API handling

database flow

environment configuration

deployment structure

real-world debugging

Frontend Deployment

The frontend version of the project was successfully deployed using Vercel.

During deployment, I also faced build configuration and routing issues, especially related to:

Vite build commands

frontend-only deployment

API connection handling

routing configuration

Solving these problems improved my understanding of production deployment workflows.

What I Learned

This project helped me improve my skills in:

Full-Stack Development

React Project Structure

API Integration

Backend Development

Debugging

Deployment

Responsive UI Design

Git & GitHub Workflow

Real Project Architecture

More importantly, it gave me confidence in building complete full-stack systems independently.

Final Thoughts

The TEYZIX CORE Internship Portal is not just another practice project for me. It represents practical learning, consistency, debugging experience and real-world development exposure.

I still plan to improve this system further by:

integrating a production database

Currently Working on a Full-Stack Social Networking Platform

Currently Working on a Full-Stack Social Networking Platform

As part of my Web Development Internship at ARCH Technologies, I am currently working on Task 4 — a Social Networking Platform.

This project is focused on building a real-world application where users can create profiles, share posts, interact through likes and comments and connect with others — similar to professional platforms like LinkedIn.

Key Features:
• User Authentication with Email Verification
• Profile Management
• Posts, Likes & Comments
• Friend/Connection Requests
• Real-Time Notifications (WebSockets)
• Privacy Controls & Multimedia Sharing

️ Tech Stack:
Next.js • Node.js • Express • MongoDB • Socket.IO • Tailwind CSS

This project is helping me dive deeper into full-stack development and real-time systems while building something scalable and practical.

GitHub Repo: https://github.com/YasirAwan4831/arch-tech-task4-social-platform

More updates coming soon as I continue building

Introduction

In this blog, I will walk you through my Full Stack Portfolio Website, explaining every section, feature and design decision in a structured, real-world approach.

This is not just a simple portfolio — it is designed like a complete product, including multiple pages, modern UI/UX, smooth animations and practical functionality.

Project Goal

The goal of this project was to:

Build a professional portfolio

Apply real-world frontend architecture

Improve UI/UX design thinking

Create a scalable and maintainable structure

Navigation & Layout Structure

From Internship to Industry Mindset: My Digital Workflow Learning Journey with PCF & Skills4U

Learning Digital Workflow Through a Real Internship Experience

Recently, I completed a 6-week project-based internship with Pakistan Career Fair & Skills4U, and it reshaped how I view tech careers and freelancing.

What Made It Different?

Practical sessions, not theory

LinkedIn as a professional tool

Digital communication & networking

Real documentation and reporting

Why This Matters for Tech & Freelancing

Tech professionals don’t work in isolation.
They collaborate, communicate, present and document — just like we did during this internship.

The final project and presentations simulated real freelance workflows, preparing us for future opportunities.

Certificate of Completion

Connect With Me & View Related Post

Key Takeaway

Skills matter — but workflow, visibility and professionalism decide growth.

Grateful for the mentorship and exposure that pushed me closer to an industry-ready mindset.

My Practical Journey in Front-End Development During My Internship

Front-end development today is far more than just writing HTML and CSS. It is about creating interactive, scalable, and user-friendly interfaces that deliver real value to users. During my internship, I worked on a complete front-end project where the primary focus was clean UI design, well-structured components, and a realistic application flow.

This internship gave me practical exposure to how modern front-end applications are planned, developed, and optimized with usability and performance in mind. It helped me move beyond theory and understand real-world development practices.

Why Front-End Development Matters

Front-end development creates the first impression of any digital product. Regardless of how powerful the backend is, a confusing or slow interface can drive users away. A well-designed front-end ensures:

A smooth and intuitive user experience

Clear navigation and logical layouts

Responsive behavior across all devices

Fast interactions and meaningful feedback

These principles guided every design and development decision throughout my internship project.

Technology Stack Used

The project was focused entirely on front-end development using modern and industry-relevant tools:

React.js – For building component-based user interfaces TypeScript –

To improve code quality and maintainability Tailwind CSS – For clean,

responsive, and scalable styling JavaScript (ES6+) – For handling

application logic React Router – For navigation and route management

The goal was not just to use these tools, but to apply them correctly following best practices.

Component-Based Architecture in React

One of the most valuable lessons from this internship was understanding React component-based architecture. Instead of writing large and unmanageable files the UI was divided into reusable components such as:

Navbar and Sidebar

Dashboard layouts

Cards, tables and forms

This approach made the application easier to maintain, scale and debug. Each component had a clear responsibility, which significantly improved code readability and structure

Designing a Clean and User-Friendly UI

UI/UX was a major focus during development. I ensured that:

The layout remained clean and easy to understand

Navigation was simple and intuitive

Important actions were clearly visible

Design consistency was maintained across all pages

Tailwind CSS helped me quickly build responsive layouts while maintaining a professional and modern look.

Role-Based Interface & Dashboard Flow

A key feature of the Internship was role-based UI rendering. Different users could see different dashboards and navigation options depending on their role. This helped me understand:

Conditional rendering in React

Secure and logical UI design

v Clean routing structures

This feature made the Internship feel more realistic and closer to production-level applications.

Guided Walkthrough & User Experience

To improve user onboarding, I implemented a guided walkthrough using React Joyride. This feature helped users understand:

How the dashboard works

How to navigate using the sidebar

Where to find key features

Small usability enhancements like this can significantly improve the overall user experience.

Responsive Design & Performance

The application was tested across multiple screen sizes to ensure:

Proper layout on mobile, tablet, and desktop

Smooth scrolling and interactions

No broken or misaligned UI elements

Responsive design is no longer optional—it is a core requirement of modern front-end development.

What I Learned from This Internship

This internship was a valuable learning experience. It helped me:

Think like a Full Stack developer rather than just a coder

Write cleaner and more structured code

Understand real-world UI/UX expectations

Build confidence with React and modern front-end tools

Most importantly, I learned that successful front-end development is a balance between logic, design and user experience.

Final Thoughts

Front-end development is a continuously evolving field and practical projects like this play a crucial role in growth. Working with React, TypeScript and modern UI practices gave me a solid foundation and hands-on confidence.

I am excited to continue learning, building and refining my Full-Stack development skills one project at a time.

If you are learning Full Stack web development keep building projects—practical work is where real learning happens.

Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is more than just a summer internship—it's a gateway into the world of open source development. Every year, thousands of students and new contributors get a chance to work on real-world software projects under the mentorship of experienced developers. If you're thinking about applying, here’s an in-depth guide to help you navigate the process, craft a compelling proposal, and increase your chances of being accepted. For more information, checkout GSoC Page

What is Google Summer of Code?

GSoC is a global, online program designed to introduce fresh talent to open source software development. Over a period of 12+ weeks during the summer, accepted contributors work on a project of their choice with the guidance of mentors from an open source organization. The program not only boosts your coding skills but also immerses you in a collaborative community that spans continents.

Why Apply for GSoC?

Real-World Experience: Gain hands-on experience by contributing to large, established projects.

Mentorship: Learn directly from seasoned developers who can guide you through complex challenges.

Community Engagement: Become part of vibrant open source communities and build professional networks.

Resume Booster: A successful GSoC project is a standout accomplishment that can enhance your career prospects.

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying

1. Explore and Choose an Organization

Research Organizations:
Start by reviewing the list of accepted mentoring organizations. Each organization typically outlines project ideas on their website or in their repositories. Take the time to understand their mission, codebase, and community guidelines. Engaging with the community early—by joining mailing lists or forums—can provide you with valuable insights and help you make an informed choice.

Tip:
Follow the organizations on social media or subscribe to their newsletters to stay updated on any pre-application events or discussions.

2. Select a Project

Align with Your Interests:
Choose a project that resonates with your skills and interests. Whether it’s enhancing a feature or fixing long-standing bugs, ensure that the project aligns with your technical strengths and learning goals.

Contribute Early:
Even before you apply, try to contribute small patches or fix minor issues. This will not only help you understand the codebase but also demonstrate your commitment to the community.

Tip:
Document your contributions on platforms like GitHub. It serves as proof of your engagement and can be referenced in your proposal.

3. Draft a Compelling Proposal

Structure and Content:
A strong proposal is the heart of your application. Here’s what to include:

Introduction and Motivation: Explain why you’re interested in the project and the organization. This section should reflect your passion for open source.

Project Overview: Provide a clear and concise description of what you plan to achieve. Break down the project into manageable components.

Implementation Plan: Outline the technologies, tools, and frameworks you intend to use. Detail the steps you will take to complete the project. This includes milestone definitions and timelines.

Risk Assessment: Identify potential challenges or roadblocks. Propose strategies for mitigating these risks.

Previous Contributions: Highlight any previous work you’ve done in open source or related projects. Include links to your code contributions, if available.

Presentation Matters:
Make your proposal easy to read and visually appealing. Use bullet points, subheadings, and clear formatting to structure your content. A well-organized proposal reflects your ability to plan and execute complex projects.

Tip:
Before finalizing, share a draft with mentors or community members for feedback. Their input can help refine your proposal and catch any potential oversights.

4. Submit Your Proposal

Follow the Guidelines:
Ensure that you adhere to the official application guidelines provided by GSoC. Double-check the deadlines and required documents. Missing out on small details can jeopardize your application.

Final Review:
Proofread your proposal multiple times. Verify that every section is clear, concise, and free of errors. A polished proposal leaves a strong first impression.

Tip:
Create a checklist based on the application guidelines and tick off each requirement as you prepare your submission.

General Tips for Success

Start Early: The sooner you engage with the community, the better. Early contributions can help you build a rapport with mentors and understand the organization’s workflow.

Be Clear and Concise: Your proposal should communicate your plan effectively. Avoid unnecessary jargon and focus on clarity.

Show Enthusiasm: Passion is contagious. Let your genuine interest in the project and open source shine through in your writing.

Network: Utilize social platforms like GitHub, Slack, or mailing lists to interact with other contributors. Networking can open doors and provide support during the application process.

Iterate Based on Feedback: Don’t be afraid to revise your proposal multiple times. Constructive criticism is a crucial part of learning and improving.

Final Thoughts

GSoC is an exceptional opportunity for anyone looking to break into open source development. By following this guide, you’ll be well-prepared to craft a thoughtful proposal that not only showcases your technical prowess but also your commitment to contributing meaningfully to the community. Remember, the process is as much about learning and growing as it is about coding. Use this experience to build a strong foundation for your future in software development.
