Converting HEIC to JPG Entirely in the Browser: A Privacy-First Approach

If you have ever transferred photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC, you know the frustration: a folder full of
.HEIC
files that nothing on your computer can open. HEIC — the High Efficiency Image Container built on HEVC video compression — has been Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It stores higher-quality images in smaller files than JPEG, which is great for phones. For everyone else on the web, it is a compatibility headache.

The root of the problem is uneven browser support. Safari renders HEIC natively because Apple owns the codec. Chrome and Firefox have largely declined to ship an HEVC decoder, partly due to HEVC patent licensing concerns. The result: you cannot just drop a
.heic
file into an
<img>
tag and expect it to work, and most "free HEIC converter" websites ask you to upload your personal photos to their servers first. That trade-off has always bothered me — shipping private photos to a stranger's infrastructure just to change a container format.

There is a better way, and it runs entirely on your own machine. Modern browsers expose everything needed to decode and re-encode an image with no server round-trip:

Read the file locally with the FileReader API or
URL.createObjectURL
— the bytes never leave the device.

Decode the HEIC bitstream with a WebAssembly-compiled HEVC decoder, running at near-native speed inside the page.

Paint the decoded frame onto an HTML
<canvas>
, then call
canvas.toBlob(cb, "image/jpeg")
to re-encode it as JPEG.

Offer the resulting blob as a download.

No uploads, no accounts, no server queues. Conversion speed is limited only by your own hardware, and your photos stay exactly where they belong — on your device.

This is not just theory. I built a free no-upload HEIC converter on exactly this architecture: the file is read with FileReader, decoded and re-encoded via Canvas in the browser, and nothing ever touches a server. It works offline once the page is loaded, and it chews through a whole vacation's worth of photos in minutes.

A few practical notes if you implement this yourself: HEIC files can hold multiple images (bursts, thumbnails), so select the primary item by its ID; respect EXIF orientation when drawing to the canvas or your JPEGs will come out rotated; and decode one file at a time to keep memory usage sane on large 48MP shots.

The broader lesson is that the browser has quietly become a capable media workstation. Before reaching for a server — and before asking users to trust you with their files — it is worth asking whether the whole pipeline can run on the client. For HEIC conversion, it can.

Disclosure: I'm the developer of FileOnTap.
