A source-first way to explore DeepSeek Harness plugins

The DeepSeek Harness ecosystem is growing quickly. A search can surface desktop shells, terminal tools, interface tweaks, vision extensions, workflow helpers, and plugin registries. The hard part is not finding a name. It is understanding what that project actually is before a command changes a working Harness profile.

That is the gap DSH Hub is meant to cover. It is a bilingual, source-first directory for DeepSeek Harness plugins and clients. The directory is deliberately narrow: every catalog entry links to a public GitHub repository, so discovery starts with code and project metadata rather than an anonymous download page.

Discovery should lead to inspection

A list of popular tools can be useful, but it should be the start of evaluation, not the end. Before I add an unfamiliar extension, I want to answer a few practical questions:

Who owns the repository, and is there a clear upstream?

What does the README say about supported Harness profiles, prerequisites, and installation?

Is there a license, recent release activity, and an issue tracker I can inspect?

Which files, network destinations, shell commands, or permissions does the extension introduce?

Can I try it in an isolated profile without reusable credentials or important files?

DSH Hub keeps the path to those answers one click away. It separates plugins from clients because the two change risk in different ways. A plugin usually extends an existing Harness profile with a focused feature. A client may bundle its own runtime, update system, network listener, or built-in plugin set. Treating both as the same kind of download makes comparison harder.

What "verified" means here

The word "verified" can be misleading in software directories, so DSH Hub states its boundary plainly. It verifies that a public GitHub repository is reachable and records visible metadata at a dated snapshot. It does not mean the project has passed a security audit, that a maintainer is endorsed, or that every distributed package matches its repository.

At the current August 18, 2026 snapshot, the catalog contains 19 plugins and 6 clients. Discovery begins with the official DeepSeek Harness repository, the GitHub dsh-plugin topic, and a community-maintained registry. Candidates are then checked individually for a clear connection to the ecosystem and a public source repository.

That source requirement matters. Stars, a polished landing page, and a copied install command are all weak signals on their own. A repository lets you look at the actual entry points, manifest, releases, dependencies, and maintenance history before deciding whether an extension belongs in your setup.

A small, repeatable install workflow

A directory cannot make third-party code safe, but it can support a better decision process:

Start with the official Harness experience so you know the baseline.

Pick one capability you need, such as a vision tool, a sidebar change, or a workflow helper.

Open the linked GitHub repository and read the README, manifest, license, releases, and issues.

Test one extension at a time in a disposable profile with no production tokens or sensitive files.

Record the installed command and version, and keep a known-good profile for rollback.

If a project cannot explain what it installs, where it connects, or how it updates, that is useful information too.

A directory as a research index

DSH Hub is not a marketplace and it does not install software on anyone's behalf. It is a research index for people who want to explore the DeepSeek Harness ecosystem without losing the provenance trail. You can browse plugins and clients, search by owner or capability, then go straight to the source that should inform the final decision.

Explore the directory at dsh-hub.org. If you maintain a relevant project with a public GitHub repository, the site also explains how to submit it for consideration.

Everyone says DeepSeek is cheaper, but I got tired of guessing the exact math. So I built a calculat

Hey everyone,

Like most of us building AI apps right now, I’ve been heavily debating whether to migrate my stack from OpenAI over to DeepSeek.

The headline is always "It's 10x cheaper!", but when you actually sit down to calculate your specific use case—factoring in input tokens, output tokens, context windows, and prompt caching—the math gets annoying really fast. I found myself running complex Excel spreadsheets just to figure out if the migration effort was actually worth the API savings.

I realized a lot of founders and devs are probably doing the exact same manual math.

So over the weekend, I built a fast, free, no-BS calculator to solve this: ByteCalculators: DeepSeek vs OpenAI Cost Optimizer

What it does:

You plug in your estimated daily active users and average context size (Inputs/Outputs).
It instantly calculates your Monthly Recurring Cost (MRC) for OpenAI models (GPT-4o, GPT-5 Mini, etc.) vs. DeepSeek V3.
It shows you the exact dollar amount you will save per month by switching.
It’s completely free, no ads, no sign-ups. Just pure math for builders.

Since I was recently invited as an early contributor here, I really wanted to share this with the CoderLegion community first.

I’d love your brutal feedback! Does the math check out for your current AI workloads? Are there any other models you’d like me to add to the comparison?

Cheers!

DeepSeek Does It Again: From MoE to DSA, The New Era of LLM Efficiency

Header image sourced from Chat-Deep

Introduction: The Invisible Wall of LLMs

In the fast-paced world of Artificial Intelligence, we often marvel at the size and capabilities of new Large Language Models (LLMs). However, behind every breakthrough lies an invisible wall—a fundamental challenge that limits their scalability and accessibility: computational cost. The team at DeepSeek AI seems to have made tearing down this wall their specialty.

First, they introduced us to their DeepSeek-V2 model with its groundbreaking Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture, a clever way to scale models by activating only a fraction of their parameters for each task. And now, they've done it again. With the release of DeepSeek-V3.2-Exp, they are tackling another pillar holding up that wall: the complexity of the attention mechanism.

The Core Problem: The Tyranny of Quadratic Complexity ($O(L^2)$)

To grasp the magnitude of this innovation, we first need to talk about the enemy: quadratic complexity ($O(L^2)$) within the Transformer's attention mechanism.

Since its inception, attention has allowed models to understand the relationships between words in a text. To do this, each new token being processed must "attend" to every single token that came before it. This is incredibly powerful, but it comes at a cost.

In simple terms, quadratic complexity means that if you double the length of the text (the context), the computational cost and processing time don't just double—they quadruple. If you triple it, the cost multiplies by nine. This creates an exponential bottleneck that makes processing very long documents, entire codebases, or books prohibitively expensive and slow.

The Solution: DeepSeek Sparse Attention (DSA)

DeepSeek-V3.2-Exp introduces an elegant solution to this problem: DeepSeek Sparse Attention (DSA). Instead of "dense" attention (all-to-all), DSA implements "sparse" attention, where each token only attends to the most relevant preceding tokens.

How does it achieve this? The architecture relies on two main components:

Lightning Indexer: This is the brains of the operation. It's a highly efficient component that, before the main attention calculation, computes an "index score" ($I_{t,s}$) between the current query token and all previous tokens. This score determines relevance. Its design is key to its efficiency, as it uses few heads and can be implemented in FP8.

Fine-grained Token Selection: Based on the indexer's scores, this mechanism is purely selective. It retrieves only the key-value entries corresponding to the
top-k
(the 'k' best) index scores. In the paper, for instance, they mention selecting 2048 key-value tokens for each query.

The result is that the main attention calculation is no longer performed over the entire sequence but on a small, relevant subset of tokens. This changes the game, reducing the attention complexity from $O(L^2)$ to $O(Lk)$, where 'k' is a fixed number far smaller than the context length 'L'.

The Results: Radical Efficiency Without Sacrificing Performance

This is where DeepSeek's approach truly shines. This isn't just a theoretical optimization; the results are tangible and, most importantly, achieved without a significant drop in performance.

On-Par Performance: Benchmark comparisons show that DeepSeek-V3.2-Exp does not exhibit substantial performance degradation compared to its predecessor, DeepSeek-V3.1-Terminus. On key benchmarks like MMLU-Pro, the score is identical (85.0), and variations in others are minimal.

Drastic Cost Reduction: Figure 3 from the paper is conclusive. It shows how the cost per million tokens—for both prefilling (processing the initial prompt) and decoding (generating the response)—skyrockets linearly for the older model as the context length increases. In contrast, with DSA, the cost curve flattens dramatically, demonstrating massive savings in long-context scenarios.

You can find a more detailed analysis in their paper.

What This Means for the Future

From my perspective, focusing on custom software development and AI implementation, this breakthrough is more than just an incremental improvement; it's an enabler.

The Era of Hybrid Architectures: DeepSeek is showing us the way forward. The future isn't a single solution but the intelligent combination of efficient architectures. Imagine a model that combines the parameter efficiency of MoE with the context efficiency of DSA. We would be looking at a new generation of LLMs that are fundamentally more scalable and cost-effective.

New Frontiers for Applications: With lower costs for long-context tasks, use cases that were once prohibitive are now viable. Think of AI agents that can analyze and reason over entire code repositories in real-time, legal assistants that can review thousands of pages of case law instantly, or financial analysis systems that process full annual reports in a single pass.

The Democratization of Power: Efficiency doesn't just benefit large corporations. Lower training and, crucially, inference costs allow startups, freelance developers, and smaller companies to access and deploy state-of-the-art models to build custom solutions.

Ultimately, DeepSeek is cementing its reputation as a team that doesn't just chase raw performance but tackles the fundamental engineering problems that will allow us to build the next generation of AI applications. And it's fascinating to see how this race for efficiency—driven in part by US hardware restrictions on China—is sparking software innovations that benefit us all. It's the classic story of necessity breeding ingenuity, and in the AI race, architectural ingenuity may prove to be more decisive than the brute force of silicon.

First MoE, now DSA. They are, without a doubt, a team to watch.

What are your thoughts? How do you see these new advancements shaping the future? Leave a comment below!

I'm also leaving a link to their card on Hugging Face so you can dig deeper into this new model.

Which is Better for Prompt Engineering: Deepseek R1 or OpenAI o1?

In the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence, two models have recently garnered significant attention: DeepSeek’s R1 and OpenAI’s o1.

Both models aim to advance AI capabilities, but they differ in design philosophy, performance, and accessibility. This blog provides a comprehensive comparison between DeepSeek R1 and OpenAI o1, focusing on their accuracy, performance, and practical applications.

Overview of DeepSeek R1 and OpenAI o1

DeepSeek R1

Developed By : Chinese startup DeepSeek,

open-source AI model : R1

It emphasizes cost efficiency and accessibility. It employs a “mixture of experts” technique, delegating specific tasks to specialized sub-models, thereby reducing computational requirements. Notably, DeepSeek R1’s model weights are publicly available under an MIT license, promoting transparency and community collaboration.

Chinese Open-Source AI DeepSeek R1 Matches OpenAI's o1 at 98% Lower Cost

OpenAI o1

OpenAI’s o1 is a proprietary AI model designed for a broad range of applications, from natural language understanding to complex problem-solving. While it offers robust performance across various tasks, access to o1 is restricted and typically requires a subscription or usage-based payment, limiting its availability to certain users.

Performance Comparison

Accuracy and Reasoning

Both models have been evaluated on their reasoning and problem-solving capabilities. In benchmark tests, DeepSeek R1 has demonstrated performance comparable to OpenAI’s o1, effectively handling multi-step reasoning and complex decision-making tasks. However, in certain specific problem-solving scenarios, o1 has shown a slight edge over R1.

How does DeepSeek R1 really fare against OpenAI’s best reasoning models?

Cost Efficiency

A significant distinction between the two models lies in their cost structures. DeepSeek R1 was developed with a focus on minimizing computational expenses, reportedly achieving performance parity with OpenAI’s models at just 3% of the cost. This cost efficiency is attributed to its innovative training methodologies and optimized resource utilization.

DeepSeek-R1’s bold bet on reinforcement learning: How it outpaced OpenAI at 3% of the cost

Accessibility

DeepSeek R1’s open-source nature, with publicly available model weights under an MIT license, makes it highly accessible to developers and organizations seeking customizable AI solutions without significant financial investment. In contrast, OpenAI’s o1, being proprietary, imposes access limitations and associated costs, which may be prohibitive for some users.

Practical Applications: Prompt and Response Examples

To illustrate the practical differences between DeepSeek R1 and OpenAI o1, let’s examine their responses to a series of prompts.

Prompt 1: Explain the concept of reinforcement learning in one paragraph.

DeepSeek R1: “Reinforcement learning (RL) is a type of machine learning where an agent learns to make decisions by interacting with an environment to maximize cumulative rewards. The agent takes actions based on its current state, and the environment responds with a new state and a reward signal, which indicates the success or failure of the action. Through trial and error, the agent develops a policy — a strategy for choosing actions — that optimizes long-term rewards. RL is unique because it focuses on learning from delayed feedback, balancing exploration (trying new actions) and exploitation (using known effective actions). It is widely used in areas like robotics, game playing, and autonomous systems, where sequential decision-making is critical.”

OpenAI o1: “Reinforcement Learning (RL) is a type of machine learning where an agent learns to make decisions by interacting with an environment to maximize cumulative rewards. The agent takes actions, receives feedback in the form of rewards or penalties, and adjusts its strategy based on this experience. RL is based on trial and error, leveraging concepts like exploration (trying new actions) and exploitation (choosing the best-known action). It often uses algorithms like Q-learning, Deep Q Networks (DQN), and Policy Gradient methods. RL is widely applied in robotics, game playing (e.g., AlphaGo), self-driving cars, and financial trading.”

Prompt 2: Translate the following English sentence into French: “Artificial intelligence is transforming the world.”

DeepSeek R1: “L’intelligence artificielle transforme le monde.”

OpenAI o1: “L’intelligence artificielle transforme le monde.”

Prompt 3: Solve the mathematical equation: What is the integral of x²?

DeepSeek R1: “To find the integral of x2x2, we can use the power rule for integration. The power rule states that: ∫x^n dx = (x^(n+1)/n+1)+C where n is any real number except −1, and C is the constant of integration. Applying the power rule to x^2: ∫x^2 dx = (x^(2+1)/2+1)+C = (x^3)/3+C So, the integral of x^2 is: ((x^3)/3)+C”*

Prompt 4: Generate a short poem about the ocean.

DeepSeek R1:

Beneath the sky’s vast, endless dome,
The ocean whispers, a restless poem.
Its waves, like verses, rise and fall,
A timeless song that calls to all.

In depths where shadows softly gleam,
Lies a world of wonder, a liquid dream.
With every tide, it breathes anew,
A boundless blue, forever true.

OpenAI o1:

The ocean hums a melody deep,
A song of secrets waves do keep.
Golden sun and silver moon,
Pull its tides in gentle tune.

Foam-kissed shores and winds that roam,
Carve the sand and shape the stone.
Endless blue, so wild and free,
A whispered call — come dance with me.

Prompt 5: Describe the process of photosynthesis in one paragraph.

DeepSeek R1: “Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy, usually from the sun, into chemical energy stored in glucose. It occurs primarily in the chloroplasts of plant cells, which contain the pigment chlorophyll. The process involves two main stages: the light-dependent reactions and the Calvin cycle. In the light-dependent reactions, light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll, driving the splitting of water molecules into oxygen, protons, and electrons. This process generates ATP and NADPH, which are energy carriers. In the Calvin cycle (light-independent reactions), these energy carriers are used to fix carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into organic molecules, ultimately producing glucose. Oxygen is released as a byproduct, making photosynthesis crucial for maintaining atmospheric oxygen levels and supporting life on Earth.”

OpenAI o1: “Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy to produce food. It occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells, where chlorophyll absorbs sunlight. The process involves two main stages: the light-dependent reactions and the Calvin cycle (light-independent reactions). In the light-dependent reactions, sunlight splits water molecules into oxygen, protons, and electrons, generating ATP and NADPH. In the Calvin cycle, carbon dioxide is fixed and combined with these energy carriers to synthesize glucose. Oxygen is released as a byproduct, making photosynthesis essential for sustaining life on Earth.”

In these examples, both models provide accurate and coherent responses, demonstrating their proficiency in understanding and generating human-like text. However, subtle differences in phrasing and detail may influence user preference based on specific requirements.
Conclusion

DeepSeek R1 and OpenAI o1 represent significant advancements in AI language models, each with its unique strengths. DeepSeek R1 offers a cost-effective, open-source alternative with performance comparable to proprietary models, making it an attractive option for developers and organizations prioritizing accessibility and customization. Conversely, OpenAI o1 provides robust performance across a wide range of applications but comes with access limitations and associated costs.

The choice between DeepSeek R1 and OpenAI o1 ultimately depends on specific use cases, resource availability, and the importance of open-source accessibility to the user.
