Optimizing User Idle Detection in React

Managing user idle states efficiently is critical for performance-heavy applications. In the latest update to react-hook-lab, I have refined the useIdle hook to provide more granular control over event throttling.

What Changed?

Previously, the throttle mechanism was rigid. To prevent unnecessary re-renders during high-frequency events (like mouse movement), I have updated the logic to use a dynamic throttle window. The hook now calculates effectiveThrottle as the minimum of your defined timeout or half the total duration, ensuring responsiveness while keeping the main thread lean.

Implementation Examples

Basic Usage

Simply track when a user is inactive for 5 seconds:

const isIdle = useIdle(5000);

return <div>{isIdle ? 'User is away' : 'User is active'}</div>;
Custom Throttle Behavior

The hook now automatically balances the throttle duration based on your timeout setting to prevent performance bottlenecks:

// The hook will now self-adjust the throttle to be
// more aggressive for shorter idle timeouts.
const isIdle = useIdle(1000);
