The Challenge of Responsive Idle Tracking
Tracking user inactivity is essential for modern web applications—whether it's auto-saving drafts, timing out sessions, or pausing resource-heavy animations. However, naïve implementations of activity listeners often lead to performance bottlenecks due to excessive event firing.
In the latest update to react-hook-lab, I have refined the useIdle hook to implement dynamic throttling, ensuring that your state updates remain performant even during high-frequency user interactions.
What Changed?
The useIdle hook now calculates its throttle threshold dynamically based on your defined timeout. By capping the throttle at half the duration of your timeout, we ensure the hook stays responsive while preventing unnecessary render cycles.
Usage Example
Basic usage to track inactivity after 5 seconds:
import { useIdle } from 'react-hook-lab';
const App = () => {
const isIdle = useIdle(5000);
return <div>User is {isIdle ? 'Idle' : 'Active'}</div>;
};
For scenarios with shorter timeouts, the logic automatically adjusts the throttle to maintain accuracy:
// Automatically scales throttling for a 1s timeout
const isQuickIdle = useIdle(1000);
