Other mistake: When Dr. Grace is ferried via fighter jet to the USS Carl Vinson, we are shown an overhead establishing shot of the aircraft carrier, followed by a shot of Grace exiting the fighter. However, the carrier's flight deck was cluttered with aircraft, including one parked right smack on the angled deck where the fighter was landing. The flight deck should have been cleared of most aircraft.
Suggested correction: Aircraft carriers allow aircraft to remain on the flight deck for short periods. Many items on deck are constantly being moved; if the flight deck is needed for an aircraft, it is cleared. There are no regulations regarding permanent vacancy of the flight deck. Life on an aircraft carrier is subject to a daily routine of many events, often requiring the flight deck to be occupied by both aircraft and cargo.
One or even two aircraft are literally in the way of the landing strip (port side of the ship; it does not have an angled deck to be clear). There is no way they simply put those aircraft to the side or below deck (elevators are cluttered too) for the aircraft to land and then placed them back again before the occupants of the landed plane got out.
Factual error: During the war games they have Jefferson pose as a major in order to facilitate the commandeering of the ambulance and the jeep. Regardless of their personal feelings in the matter the ambulance crew and the driver and troops in the jeep would be perfectly aware that no black man would ever be promoted to a position of authority in an otherwise all white command. We may find it repugnant today but the US Army was rigidly segregated during World War 2 - and it stayed that way until 1948. Jefferson may have been inducted into a special unit like the Dirty Dozen but considering that the future of the entire mission is riding on their success at the games, throwing it all away like that makes no sense at all.
Visible crew/equipment: During their fight at Orthanc, in the wide overhead shot, as Saruman flies backwards towards the large doors, the wire attached to the back of Christopher Lee's outfit is visibly pulling his clothes. (00:50:45)
Continuity mistake: When Yelena Belova is found by the survivor scientist in Malaysia, she advances towards him, hands raised. However, she holds the explosive in her right hand in different ways between shots (check when she mentions the "breakthrough").
Revealing mistake: When Ratigan is sneaking up on Basil inside Big Ben, there is a shot where both characters have their backs to the camera. In this shot, there is a piece of equipment directly in front of the turning gear they are standing on. This piece of metal can be seen to flicker for a few moments.
Question: After Capt Miller gets briefed on his new mission to rescue Pvt Ryan and enlists Upham for the mission, there is a long shot of the beach. What are those Zeppelin-like things that are floating around, tied to the ground? What are they good for? (00:39:50)
Answer: These were barrage balloons, commonly used during the war. They are used to stop low level bombing and low level fly bys by enemy fighter planes. The cables attached to the balloons are designed to cut through the wings of the aircraft and to bring them down, so any pilot would have to fly above them, and the balloons would also restrict the view from above.
Trivia: When composer Éric Serra showed Inva Mula, the Albanian soprano who was going to sing the Diva Dance, the sheet music for that part, apparently she laughed and said that it was impossible for the human voice to switch from high to low notes that quickly. She got her way: The part that ended up in the film is not a single piece of audio, rather it's several pieces stitched meticulously together.
Revealing mistake: When Qui-Gon, Jar-Jar, and Padme are eating at Anakin's house, Anakin's mum pours water for Qui-Gon. But when she gets to Jar-Jar, she tips the pitcher but no water comes out. (00:39:10)
Continuity mistake: Spot finds four other humanlike creatures and goes to them. Arlo is standing several feet in front of them. He begins to push some dirt by using his nose. A close-up then shows him using his nose to draw a circle around the five others but he is standing much too far away to be able to do this.
