I think it's about time our government finally recognized that safety begins in the school. It is something that is taught to our children, even though it is not explicitly part of the curriculum. This topic is often discussed and brought to light by initiatives such as “bullying in our schools.” As teachers, we recognize our own impact on our students. We must also recognize that students may be taught that violence is OKAY, through a variety of other avenues, such as their own family, the media, tv, and on the streets.
Our government has the power to help shape our citizens, of today and tomorrow. Violence has been a problem for the last ten years and only recently, with the new elections coming up, have they decided that this is THE IMPORTANT ISSUE. By acting now, to change our future, we can help stop the violence. One way to do so would involve more action at the school level. By showing students the result of violence, inevitably, it could motivate them to stop them from committing violent acts. Futhermore, by providing students with outlets for their thoughts and feelings, we could work together towards a more positive future. By allowing students to construct their own thoughts on the issue, it empowers them. It allows them to have a voice, to be heard. Students listen to their peers, they also see their own peers as role models, people to be emulated. This can be a double edged sword, leading to victory or to violence. Individuals have the right to choose, they have choice.
Violence is predominant in some specific areas in Toronto, but one only has to go to the clubs in the downtown core to see some really interesting interactions. The combined effects of alcohol and drugs leads to some really interesting and bizarre scenarios. We must dig deeper into the psyche of the mind, to see what motivates people to drink, to do drugs, to use their fists or another weapon of destruction. We must also see through the mind of an aggressive person, what motivates them to use their power on another. On the other hand, we must also see what stops an individual from using their power. We must delve into the minds of the peace to see what holds them back. What is it that contains their inner turmoil? What stops them from going ‘postal,’ so to speak? Violence is not just an individual matter, it is a social matter.
I insist that there is more to violence than just a bad child, or a child gone wrong. There are issues at the societal level which instigate or perpetuate violence. Factors such as suspensions, being label ‘bad’, time, after school activities, becoming productive individuals in society, attitudes and experience all affect the individual in society.
The environment also affects society. Just look to the internet, where anonymity is increasingly apparent. Web sites… allow for internet bullying and an array of other mind boggling interactions that pull the spirit down. These events do not just occur on the internet. They occur in real life too! Everyday when we walk down the street we make choices. We choose to turn a blind eye to the people on the streets. They started out just like us, with goals and dreams and they suddenly turned sour, by a series of unfortunate events. They fell through the cracks in our society.
We can see that in areas of quick turnover, there are also these feelings of ‘anonymity’. There is no one to hold the individual responsible or accountable for their actions. There are no lookouts on the corner watching little billy play with his firecrackers. There are no shoppe keepers to keep him in line. Little billy is all alone to fend for himself with no role models. A really good book that sheds light on this issue is “the life and death of great American cities” by toronot’s own Jane Jacobs.
By improving the presence of the people on the street, by having real people looking out for one another we can work towards improving our cities. But sadly, too many people are afraid. They are afraid of death. They are afraid of violence. They are afraid of the hurt and the pain that comes along with being outside, on the streets. They are too afraid to pop their head outside their own windows to see what’s going on. They are too afraid to see. So instead, they coop themselves up, in their home, in their rooms and under the cover of their own comforter, they hide. |

I am currently organizing EDAR37,a conference on the built enivornment, to be held in Atlanta GA May 3-7, 2006. Typically this conference involves papers, workshops, poster sessions, and intensives on a wide array of topics pertaining to the built environment. We are also accepting art submissions. EDRA, The Environmental Design Research Association (http://www.edra.org) invites you to join such distinguished speakers as former UN Ambassador Andrew Young, Mindspring and Greenstreet Properties founder Charles Brewer and others at our upcoming annual conference, EDRA37, May 3 - 7, 2006 in Atlanta GA. The conference attracts a distinguished mix of architects, urban planners, designers, academics, students and more for unique and in-depth discussions on all matters relating to people and how they interact with the built environment.
EDRA welcomes proposals on a wide array of topics. The theme for this year's conference is "Beyond Conflict". John Dewey wrote that “conflict is the gadfly of thought,” and EDRA37 highlights the many ways conflict stimulates new ways of seeing and creating the built environment. Conflicts emerge in many ways and take many forms, but they often result in new designs. Atlanta’s own conflicts, from the Civil War to Civil Rights, highlight this growth. At its worst, conflict destroys those things we treasure. Even then, however, it creates the stimulus for the creation of new treasures, be they physical or intellectual. At its best, conflict allows those who once opposed each other to find common ground and move far beyond where they were when the conflict began.
