New fibro research

http://communities.washingtontimes.com/neighborhood/steps-authentic-happiness-positive-psychology/2013/nov/11/fibromyalgia-indisputable-proof-claims-uk-research/

WASHINGTON, November 11, 2013 — Two new studies on fibromyalgia focus the problem on the thyroid, pituitary and hypothalamus, and suggest new avenues of relief for sufferers.

Research from the Fibromyalgia Research Foundation reveals deficient thyroid hormone regulation (DTHR) as an underlying cause of Fibromyalgia (FM). Poor diet, poor physical fitness and metabolism slowing drugs are primary contributors to symptoms as do additional hormonal imbalances of cortisol, estrogen and progesterone.

Another study, by Dr. John Lowe, Diplomat of the American Academy of Pain Management and Director of Research at the Fibromyalgia Research Foundation in the UK claims “indisputable proof” that the primary cause of fibromyalgia (FM) are with the pituitary gland or the hypothalamus.

The most often reported symptoms of FM so closely match with hypothyroidism that many physicians order a standard thyroid test in response to complaints from FM sufferers. When that test comes back negative, physicians dismiss a thyroid or hormonal disease.

Health care practitioners use the TSH test, or thyroid stimulating hormone tests, to determine whether the thyroid is malfunctioning. TSH is produced when the hypothalamus releases a substance called thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) and triggers the pituitary gland to release TSH. TSH causes the thyroid to make two hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), to help control body metabolism.

Many of those tested show ‘thyroid anti-bodies’ with a normal TSH. The presence of anti-bodies indicates the thyroid is in the process auto-immune failure. However, because the TSH levels are normal, doctors do not prescribe medications.

Endocrinologists support treating the thyroid even if the TSH test is within normal range. The patient may present with symptoms of hypo-thyroidism, hyper-thyroidism or a flux of the two and often told they have FM.

The UK studies claim this description is, in fact, FM.

There is a condition called thyroiditis, where the thyroid is inflamed and reveals FM like symptoms. A most serious issue is when TSH results come back as ‘normal range’. This affliction is most prevalent in females.

Many doctors do not understand this is a bell curve measurement and ‘normal’ may not mean ‘individual,’ and two different laboratories may indicate two separate results.

The words of Dr. Elizabeth Vliet who runs a women’s health clinic art All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth TX and is the author of  “Screaming to be heard: Hormonal connections women Suspect and Doctors Ignore,” seems to support the UK findings.

“The problem I have found is that too often women are told their thyroid is normal without having the complete thyroid test done. Of course, what most people and many physicians don’t realize is that a ‘normal range’ on a laboratory report is just that: a range.

A given person may require higher or lower levels to feel well and to function optimally. I think we must look at the lab test results along with the clinical picture described by the patient.

I have a series of more than 100 patients, all but two are women, who had a normal TSH and turned out to have significantly elevated thyroid anti-bodies that meant they needed thyroid medication in order to feel normal.

This type of oversight is particularly common with a disease call thyroiditis which is 25 times more common in females than males. A woman may experience symptoms of the disease for months to years before the TSH goes up”

This fits nicely with the UK research which states the condition may not rest with the thyroid but with the pituitary gland or the hypothalamus.

The UK research claims plausible evidence of at least 40 abnormalities of FM patients as a result of testing within range and show such symptoms as:

Widespread pain, tenderness, chronic fatigue, stiffness, depression, fuzzy brained, anxious, intolerance to cold , hot flashes (dependant) bowel issues, sleep disturbances, numbness and tingling, dry skin and mucus membranes, headaches and exercise intolerance-all hallmarks of FM.

Too little thyroid regulation also affects the metabolic aspects of FM and the UK studies concluded resting metabolic rates of those with thyroid issues undetected by conventional testing measured of 29 percent lower than average. A second test indicated 30 percent.

Basal body temperature was 96.95 and the second study 96.38. This lower core temperature combined with a poor resting metabolic rate can make an FM victim run the gamut in symptoms.

The new research provides hope for a cure for FM sufferers. The Fibromyalgia Research Foundation ran clinical trials with FM patients using thyroid hormone therapy without using the T4 hormone and found those in the controls groups that had FM improved substantially when re-tested one to five years after initial treatment.

The researchers claim “granite hard findings” for the cause of FM and the relief via treatment.

FM sufferers may benefit from consultations with a neuro- endocrinologist for diagnosis and treatment. An all-natural, reduced calorie diet along with moderate exercise is mandatory to diminish or eliminate symptoms. Analgesics and sleep medication may also help reduce the symptoms of FM.

Saying goodbye to your pet

http://www.oprah.com/relationships/Dealing-with-the-Death-of-a-Pet

This was my entry:

I just lost my chinchilla of 12 years the day before yesterday.  I had to put her to sleep due to dental problems that I suspect she had for almost a year.  When she was assessed a year ago they told me it was not dental issues and I tried a whole bunch of treatments that failed.  I am angry that they misdiagnosed but know that they couldn't do anything for her if she did have dental probs except for complicated maintenance surgeries.  She was my best friend and so was Shadow (my cat whom I lost 2 years ago after 15 years of friendship).  I have had animals in the past that I was connected to but not as much as these two and their deaths have rattled my world!  I have never ever felt the pain of loss as bad as with my companion animals because the love is so pure and unconditional.  They have a bigger piece of my heart than any past boyfriend and the pain of losing them is different from losing a person in your life.  My companions were brave until the very end and held a dignity I can only wish I had.  I still cry hysterically over the loss of Shadow when I think of her and right now I can't stop crying and grieving for Kilika.  I know this will be a long hard road to recovery and the pain will never fully heal.  Kilika listened to me every night blab about my problems and made me smile no matter what I was facing.  I was diagnosed with an incurable chronic pain condition just before she was and felt like I had someone who understood.  I am blessed that I was able to give her the relief I can't have and at the same time torn up by guilt thinking maybe it wasn't right of me to determine her date of death but the vet assured me it was the right time and the kindest thing to do.  My baby was starving to death.  With Shadow I waited too long and her vein collapsed from dehydration so it hurt to put the second dose of anesthesia in and it took a looong time.  I was still lucky to hold her as well as she passed and make sure my friends went to heaven.  When Shadow went I felt the greatest grief I have ever felt in my life and my whole body was trembling from anxiety.
Love to all those companion animals who have loved us and kept us safe and strong throughout the years.  May they rest in peace in animal heaven.

Controversial surgery for MS

The new dr I have is checking for MS.  I feel very terrified and angry about how my life is so painful and difficult now.  Every other concern about weight, body image, career or relationships has just become so stupidly insignificant to what Im going through.  The only time I dont feel pain is for about 1 or 2 minutes after I first wake up and then it starts for the entire day till I fall asleep.  I cant focus at work, I cant sit in an arm chair without pain, cant rest my body on anything, cant be hugged or touched even lightly without feeling bruised, cant get in and out of the tub well, walk to the subway, etc.  This pain is just devastating!

http://www.newhamburgindependent.ca/news/new-dundee-woman-seeking-revolutionary-treatment-for-ms/

They can apparently do a type of Angioplasty which has gotten them 73% success rates for people with MS.  And the shitty news, it's illegal in Canada.  They pulled the plug on it.  :(

A history of pain

Just for reference and responding to http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Undiagnosed-Symptoms/Random-sharp-and-concentrated-pains-throughout-body-/show/203489:

As a more thorough and better response:

I have sharp electrical shock type pain in my body too. It has progressed in a matter of a few months to from being the random shooting pain once in awhile that lasts a few seconds to a low grade to severe pain constantly 24/7 for months now. It started to get worse when I found I had calcific tendinits in my right hip. Now I've learned I actually have had tendinitis in both hips for many years (explains the hip pain).

Everything started a few years ago when it was just joint pain (bad but only in the joints mostly knees and hips). Doc said I have loose ligaments so to strengthen my muscles. I did and the pain went away.

Then one night I got the sharp nerve pain in my chest, spread to my back, my throat, my lower abdomin and stayed all night. It was excrutitaing and intense. It happened again a few months later.

Then 6 months later a constant burning lower back and abdominal pain like when I'm on my period. Then numbness and tingling in my feet. Doc said it was weak ab muscles but I was super fit then. It went away after a few months but then the sharp nerve pain started up more frequently.

Then my hips ached even more (used to flare up for years but now it was constant). I slipped on ice, they took xrays for a fracture but found my tendon was calcified. It takes many years for that to happen! This accompanied severe lower back pain especially in the one side and I think the calcium was pressing on the sciatic nerve making my leg numb and tingly and in serious pain. This is when the sharp shooting pains came back allover like years ago but EXTREME to the point I couldnt get out of bed. It wouldnt stop, didnt matter how I moved or if I did. Then other weird sensations came on...burning...mosquito bite pain...achyness....feeling bruised in certain areas....feeling like I was stabbed and left for dead...etc...

As the calcium deposit has been breaking up now I still have the nerve pain everywhere 24 hours a day 7 days a week. It hasnt stopped...there is only a few minutes after I first wake up somedays that I feel okay. Its been months now and its agony.

I "injured" my right thumb/wrist/forearm a year ago and it has been hurting off and on very bad. If I rest it and it goes away then I try to open a jar or pick up a heavy bag, its all over. I get the pain ten fold for days or weeks on end. Now it starting in my other hand. My only good hand.

I've had blood work for thyroid, all vitamins, celciac, heavy metals, allergies, other stuff I dont even know just sooo much bloodwork, MRI, Cardiograms, fitness tests, internal and external ultrasounds, physiotherapy, and many more. Everything comes back perfect so finally they diagnosed me with fibromyalgia. I was given pamphlets on how my life will never be the same and I will no longer be able to do activities the way I used to and that I should mourn the loss of my previous life. I should get more rest (I get 8 hours or more already), I should eat well (I can 100% guarentee I eat better than 98% of people on this planet, Exercise (I was insanely fit when this started), reduce stress (could use some work but hows for already following 1.5 hours of meditation a day?)...

I'm really pissed off at this point. I can't understand how this level of debilitating pain is literally off the charts of my medical record. How can they give me a clean bill of health and slap on fibromyalgia as a diagnosis? Fibro is NOT an illness, it is a serious of symptoms telling you something is wrong. It literally means muscle pains. My pain is not even in my muscles, it is just under the skin.

Exams

I have my last and final exam tomorrow. I asked for a deferred one because I am too stressed out and not ready and missed so much study time with dr appntms and hospital visits and days and sleepless nights of intense pain and distress. Just really needed to get those exams deferred but NO I need a dr's note. Now. The night before the exam. Uh, no.

My eyes are bad

Had a traumatizing experience at the eye dr and left in the middle of the appointment. I reported him too cause he was insane. I found out one eye is blurry and cant read well and the other one is fine. Shit. I think I need glasses. Maybe I can get contacts and wear coloured ones at all times! I would probably get green but maybe also violet.
