life is getting exciting.
i have the cbest this saturday. not worrying at all. i really like the idea of not working when i don't feel like it. i don't want a commitment job-wise right now.
tomorrow i'm going to do my first kid's art workshop at the long beach museum with my adorable old mentor elena. she's so tiny and has a fabulous eastern european accent. i have to remember to dress down. i'm really loving it over there. it's small, on the beach, close to my good friends, and full of nice people. thank god. for our docent "graduation" we have to give a spotlight talk infront of the entire docent council on an artist currently on exhibit, 10 min max. almost everyone training with me is absolutely shattered because only one other chick has any kind of remote art history background. i chose an UNBELIEVABLE german enamelist Karl Drerup whose work on exhibit is from the 1940's. unfortunately i can't find any images of any of his pieces because nobody likes enamel work. losers. i'm excited for it. i've given an hour-long presentation comparing two impossible movements, dada and russian constructivism, in front of the entire art department faculty AND chapman president and rambled for 50 minutes in front of a class on the entire history of german art from the 14th century to the present...to name a few similar situations.
yay for two worthless degrees.
valentine's day will be special.
remember two years ago when i went to munich during the summer? well i'm doing it again this summer. for the entire month of june i'll be back at the language school tagging along with frau ter-jung, but not having to do all her homework. it's basically a giant excuse to go back and live in that gorgeous city. christina and i are going to get an apartment instead of staying with host families again, so we won't feel bad coming in at 3am drunk off our asses every night. i'm really really really looking forward to it. i know the city inside and out, and we'll have a lot more time to explore everything now that we've got the touristy stuff out of the way.
i'm getting more eager to move out now that the time is coming (relatively) soon. summer would be the absolute earliest, but even then i'd have to make up for the money damage i'm going to do in germany. it will come soon enough. i'm probably going to try and find something in long beach/huntington beach. i.e. close to home. i like the area i live in.
i recently have gotten into rollerskating/roller derby via a new friend, Z, i met swing dancing. fucking fun as hell. i love drinking and dancing in parking lots. i guess you can't take the trash outta the girl.

12:27 am - i don't want a career
|
|
i don't want to go to graduate school. i really fucking don't. i'm trying to write a personal satement on why i want to, but i can't say anything that isn't a lie. i don't have any accute obsession with one particular segment in art history, i love it all. but not enough to waste time and money on it. i have no drive to "spread the word" or rule the roost at the getty or get tenure at some university. the only reason i'm applying is because i have nothing else to do...no driving force in my life. i should look for a job that isn't waitressing or retail or office. do they exist? i don't even need the money right now. i need something to DO. i don't think i'll regret just not going to grad school. what do people fill their lives with? work and other people. i feel like shit because this is pretty much the hardest thing i've had to tell myself. you won't be happy doing this.

so it's been awhile, lj.
the # 3 in the three's-a-charm death list is.... 3. saddam hussein. America...fuck yea!
about iggy. he's still my cuddly teddy bear that spews out hate and spiteful things when you squeeze him. : ) and due to iggy's INSANELY CLEAN, MATURE, MINIMAL vintage appartment (thanks marine corps), i began a seriously in-depth excavational cleaning of my own room about a month ago. to date, i have thrown away 6-7 trash barrels full of stuff, donated four garbage bags worth of clothes, and i still have about 10-15% of the way to go. the reasons my room was so impacted with stuff (and i know some of you can sympathize) was because my parents never let me/i couldn't bare to throw anything away. i found seven pairs of jeans from MIDDLE SCHOOL that i distinctly remember not being allowed to throw away. so i piled more random shit on it. it also didn't help that i lived in the dorms for three years and used my room at home as storage space. i'll have to post pictures after i'm done, maybe end of the month, so you all can gasp with amazement.
currently getting through more graduate school applications. long beach is looking most ideal actually because 1) cheaper! 2) closer to home and the ones i love 3) i'll really only booze it up in scotland anyway. i'm still applying to glasgow and edinburgh, but hell. i wanna stay here. and it's not like i have any serious ambitions with a career in art history anyway. i just need something to do.
oh yea, and i have recently discovered the magical world of "are you being served?". thank god for bbc america.
life is pretty good.

3:27 pm - elks and dandies and bears, oh my!
|
ok. in yosemite for a week. it was AWESOME. select photos later, of course.
we got there sunday and the falls were only trickling, and rightfully so. walked around, saw some deer, it was lovely. that night from 5 o'clock until the early morning it POURED rain non-stop. the next day, the falls were bursting with water and the rivers, once placid, were gushing. it was the best of both worlds. the weather after that was extremely pleasant. one night for dinner i had elk for the first time. fabulous. i love wild game. and my mother had osso buco, so i had elk and deer at the same time. heaven. this next thing was the best though. one day for lunch they made späzle in a cranberry cream sauce with elk medallions. HEAVEN. it was sooo sweet and good. and i had had an apple-pumpkin bisque for starters, which was also very sweet and delicious. you go to the wilderness to "rough-it" and you end up having the best meals ever.
we went to yosemite essentially for the vintner's holiday they had that week. they have different vintners from napa come out and give lectures and wine tastings throughout the week, and it all ends with a huge super-fancy gala dinner. my parents found it interesting, but i read in front of the giant fireplace at the awahnee instead. i don't know if anyone's been to the awahnee, but it was build in 1927 and is a gorgeous historical hotel with grand rooms for reading and chatting and an enormous fancy dining hall. floor to ceiling windows everywhere overlooking waterfalls, meadows and half dome. the absolute perfect way to spend a relaxing week in yosemite. among other books, i read 'amadeus'. i found it really helpful to have seen the film before reading the book solely because i could distinctly hear his hideously giddy laugh. i read 'don juan' before bed, but i could only read it a canto at a time. byron is such a wandering windbag, albeit a wonderful wandering windbag. we stayed in the cottages on the fringe of the hotel right next to a river. totally immersed in the forrest. there were large glass doors and bay windows to let all of the outside in. the best.
walked around a lot throughout the week and saw lots of deer and squirrels. i took a ton of squirrel pictures because of the digital camera. i know when i used to see squirrels when i was little, i'd take three pictures of each one. then when the pictures were developed i'd think, "why did i waste so many pictures of stupid squirrels?" now i no longer feel guilty. i also saw a coyote chase a deer, but i'm sure the deer left him in the dust. the valley itself was hardly crowded at all. i maybe saw two or three people at yosemite and bridalveil falls, which is normally full of people, and there was plenty of parking at the village and all the hotels. i know the awahnee does events like the vintner's holiday and the chef's holiday (which i've also been to) during late fall and winter to get people to come.
and now let's get to the fun part.
the gala dinner was beyond amazing because i dined with a REAL LIFE FRENCH DANDY. thank god i was decked out in pearls. Giles de Chambure, the moderator of the whole vintner's holiday, was at our table, and i have never studied a human being more discretely intense as i did with him. he was everything i dreamed a french dandy to be and more. dark blue velvet dinner jacket, ascot, wavy black hair with a touch of grey (looked in his late 30's) with a dainty british accent for his english. thoroughly charming. owns some 14th century stone mansion in the french countryside, the director of wine education in napa, and owns vineyards in uruguay. when he introduced himself to me, he kissed my hand, held it and said he had seen me reading at the fireplace instead of attending the wine tastings, and then called me a naughty girl. AAHHHH. a dandy at his finest. we had a fabulous discussion about the places we've traveled and about germany and their wine industry being sucky because of the country's socialist politics in general. it was one of the few times where i pull out my 'fancy vocabulary' and really tried not to say any kind of common or swear words, like sucky. success. and as we left, he slipped me his card. HA. and now i will elaborate about the dinner itself, because i know most of my friends are intensely interested in food. the dinner lasted about three and a half hours.
( Read more...Collapse ) after the fabulously fabulous dinner and my wine headache, i quickly went to bed around 1ish. then i am RUDELY woken up between 3 and 3:30am by a MOTHERFUCKING BLACK BEAR PAWING AT THE GLASS DOORS TWO FEET AWAY FROM ME trying to get into the room. he keeps it up for about ten minutes, then CLIMBS ONTO THE MOTHERFUCKIN ROOF. fucking what the fuck stupid bear!!!! my dad heard it too, but mom was fast asleep. when we told her about it in the morning, she shit a brick. i'll show a picture of the bear paw print in my picture post later.

i now know how great it feels to read books i actually want to read in however long it takes me.
no school to suck up time means staying up late, sleeping in, and various attempts at self improvement. book reading being one of them. and my visit with audry and jan opened up my obsession with the phantom of the opera so much that i'm (get ready to laugh hard) checking out books about how to sing. HA. something to fill in time. i really enjoyed the music for non-music majors class i took what, three years ago? i got an A on all my tests and actually did the best out of the whole class, so says dr. graziano. i can't read music for shit, or play it for that matter, but i think operatic singing is more accessible to me. HAHAHAHA. we'll see how that goes.
the gene autry thing went PERFECTLY. the guy who interviewed me was in his late 20's and we were totally on the same wavelength. so far all i'm going to do is be in the gold rush department. this includes private tours and panning for gold on the weekends with kids. if i like the people and the environment at the autry, i'll go for more stuff in the collections department and maybe the library. one plus is that the l.a. zoo is directly across the street from the autry, so i can hang out and stare at monkeys and alligators before and after work. sweet.
the goal of graduate school in scotland is set for the 2007/2008 school year. thank god i made friends with my professors so i can still get good letters of recommendation. glasgow and edinburgh are the two most likely schools i'll go to. a full year of cold weather and not really understanding what people are saying sounds great. it's not that schools in scotland are necessarily better than schools here, but hell, i want to live somewhere else for a change. living in munich with a family was a really...interesting experience, but this will be a completely different situation. the added stress having to speak COMPLETELY in german was really overwhelming and frustrating at first. i don't think i can handle that on top of graduate school.
i haven't been very social lately. sorry everyone. aside from random chris sightings at the mall, i'm pretty much lost in my own post-college world. creepy. and slightly depressing. it's odd not seeing my friends on a daily basis, but i guess i took that for granted. i did see lots of christina a few weeks ago because she had benign tumors on both her ovaries and had surgery. they had to remove one ovary and her appendix because that tumor was so huge and obtrusive. lots of morale visits and german candy runs. she went to school last week. yay. it's slightly jarring to see your friend in the hospital looking so pale with tubes everywhere and half her womanhood gone.
dressmaking is...defeating me. really, my first dress is done except for hemming it and sewing one of the arm holes. but it's so time consuming with sewing, pulling out the stitching, and sewing it again. it took two days to get the zipper in right. but it's my first one. and i have more vogue patterns to work with. i'll be ready for springtime.
i'm getting a lot of mixed messages from my parents in regards to getting a job vs. taking advantage of no attachments to school or a job. for example: my dad booked a week in yosemite this november for some wine tasting gala. now he knows i have commitments to the autry, but he insists that i take the time off to drink wine under yosemite falls. then my mom bugs me about having no money, yet is upset that i might not go. what the fuck. they want me to "do everything i can to further my chances at getting into grad school" (working at the autry), yet they want me to enjoy my "time off" for as long as i can before i actually "start my life". they've always put school over me getting a job, but i didn't think that i'd never have a job until i was 22. that's a little weird. i want to be lazy, but not like this. NOT LIKE THIS. this is just WASTE. it's sick, really.
speaking of lazy, what am i going to do now that project runway and flavor of love are almost over? granted nip/tuck is still going, but it just got interesting this last episode. hmm.
i'm getting closer to andrew, but he just left last friday for new zeland. it's part of his geophysics thing at ucsb where he's on a boat for a month off the coast of new zeland mapping the sea floor with sonar stuff. what a nerd. but a nerd who drinks, gets into bar brawls, and goes to jail. good ol' blue collar long beach kids.
i want it to be a hundred years ago when people actually cared about their country.
