"How far does my code actually reach as an SDE?" Tristan found out fast. Less than a year in, he's seen firsthand how AWS engineers show up in the open source communities that power the internet, not as observers, but as contributors shaping what ships. "The amount of open source work that happens at AWS is unparalleled to my previous experiences," shares Tristan, a Software Development Engineer #HereAtAWS. "Whether it is Valkey, Kubernetes, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL, AWS is there to make sure our customers are heard in upstream communities, and to provide contributions that make sure the open source products our customers depend on are best in class. Contributing to and building on these open source products is extremely rewarding. AWS wants its employees to contribute upstream as much as possible." That's the kind of reach your work has here. Not just internal. Not just one product. Impact, where it matters.

No playbook. No precedent. Just a team tasked with designing the first liquid cooling systems for AWS data centers in EMEA. Rory Gilmore is a Mechanical BIM Designer based in Dublin, developing 3D models and coordinated drawings that take engineering designs from concept to construction. Before AWS, he worked across hospitals, schools, pharmaceutical plants, and waste-to-energy facilities in Ireland and the UK. "I suppose the first of a kind projects, such as the initial Liquid Cooling Designs for both OPTDC and Titus DC Designs in EMEA. Being part of the design team that helped set the standard for these systems in AWS was particularly exciting." If you want to set the standard rather than follow one, there's a seat at the table.

🤖 His team built AI-powered tools to eliminate repetitive tasks. Now they spend their time on what engineers actually love: solving complex problems. Paudie Hurley is an FRE CSA Manager in Ireland who leads the Fleet Remediation Engineering team at AWS. After six years here, his team designs retrofits and upgrades across AWS's global data center fleet, and recently built AI-powered tools to transform how they work. "We've drastically reduced the time spent on manual, low-value work, freeing up the team to focus on complex problem-solving and innovation. I'm proud of that because it shows what's possible when engineers are given the tools and freedom to improve how they work."
