An in-house programme
Tesla's humanoid work sits inside the carmaker rather than in a separate entity: Optimus is built by Tesla, Inc., which is headquartered in Austin, Texas and listed on Nasdaq, and it draws on the company's AI software, chip roadmap and factory floor space. No capital has been raised for the robotics work on its own, and Tesla has not disclosed external Optimus customers or unit sales. The robot entered the manufacturing capacity table of the Q4 2025 shareholder deck alongside Model Y and Cybertruck, with the California line marked under construction.
Hardware
The robots shown publicly are V2.5-generation prototypes, which have handed out drinks at events â including a Miami showcase where one fell over after a teleoperation disconnect â and served customers at the Tesla Diner. The third generation, which Tesla calls its first design meant for mass production, has slipped repeatedly. Musk set a Q1 2026 unveiling on the Q3 2025 earnings call; the company missed that deadline, with Musk saying the robot was walking but needed finishing touches. The generation centres on a redesigned hand and forearm actuator system that Musk describes as the hardest electromechanical problem in the machine, and a soft-goods exterior engineers say will read as a human in a superhero suit. As of mid-August 2026, Tesla had not publicly unveiled the third-generation robot or announced a price.
AI and compute
Optimus shares Tesla's end-to-end approach to autonomy: a single neural network and generative world simulator trained for both driving and manipulation, rather than a modular perception-and-planning stack. Inference silicon comes from the AI5/AI6 line, which Musk intends to produce at an Austin "Terafab" built with Intel as part of a much larger compute plan.
Manufacturing
Tesla ended Model S and Model X production to clear space at Fremont for an Optimus line targeted at a million units a year, with site preparation at Giga Texas for a far larger facility. Musk has put the eventual unit cost near $20,000 and warned the early ramp will be "agonizingly slow" because the supply chain barely exists. On the Q1 2026 earnings call Musk moved the start of Fremont production to late July or August and said output would be "quite slow", citing roughly 10,000 unique parts. Tesla's Q2 2026 shareholder update said first-generation Optimus lines were being installed at Fremont, with production anticipated later this year.
Position in the field
The programme has lost senior staff: Milan Kovac left in 2025 and later joined Boston Dynamics as an adviser. The Information reported in October 2025 that leadership of the Optimus programme had been split three ways across hardware, software and manufacturing. Musk maintains the toughest competition is Chinese, a reading disputed by US rivals, while sceptics have called the programme a publicity stunt.
