Great way to add a VPN server to your network

Great way to add a VPN server to your network
I do a lot of traveling for work and therefore connect to a lot of public networks. I tried using a commercial VPN solution but ran into some issues such as a company portal hosted on AWS refusing to connect because the specific VPN-provided IP address was blacklisted. I decided to look into a more DIY solution that I could work in to my existing network. Since I already have a router and Wi-Fi mesh network, the Brume 3 gave me a quick and inexpensive way to add VPN. The Brume 3 is compact (roughly 3" square and 1" high) and easily fit on my equipment shelf. While I am using it for VPN, it is a full router and can serve as your network gateway if that is something you are looking for. Setup was relatively easy. Initial setup requires a direct Ethernet connection to a LAN port to set the admin password, WAN details, etc. but once that is complete you can set it up to allow WAN connections (I'd only recommend that if it is behind a firewall). The VPN setup was straightforward, though I did have to do some Internet searches to make sure I was configuring it to meet my needs. It supports both WireGuard and OpenVPN servers and the configuration is not overly complex. I recently took a trip and was able to give it a thorough test. Connection was simple - I was using my GL.iNet Slate 7 travel router so I simply turned on the VPN switch after connecting to the hotel network. Speed tests showed that I wasn't losing much to the tunnel headroom, though I will note that it can vary between tests depending on network conditions. My devices were seen as coming from my home network, so I had no "it looks like you're traveling" pages pop up from my streaming apps. Plex even attempted to direct stream since it saw the server as being on the same network (though that quickly overwhelmed the hotel Internet). WhatIsMyIP confirmed that traffic appeared to originate from my home router's IP address. If you are looking for a relatively easy VPN solution (or even a front-line Internet Security Appliance), I would recommend the Brume 3. The price is good and it works well for home use.

Brume requires power cycling every time travel router is shut off

Travel router from GL.iNet can't connect to the Brume everytime the travel router shuts off, and needs someone to power cycle the Brume to connect again. I didn't realize this would be an issue until I was already abroad and had to move the router frequently while at a coworking space. Honestly all of the hardware GL.iNet that I've bought has been horrible to use.

I was doing my own home networking and came across with this little guy. The value is there if you want to start your own simple networking without breaking the bank. In my opinion, it is simple to use if you follow some videos on how to set up. The connectivity is very stable and reliable. And the crazy part is, you can buy the wireless version of this and use it when you are in vacation somewhere and use it as a remote connectivity to this device.

Great VPN gateway, VPN throughput is not as advertised in my tests.

Great little VPN gateway. I have a Slate AX as well for WireGuard server duties. Although I have not gotten close to 1100mbps VPN throughput in my tests. The best so far was around 650mbps; that was in an almost perfect scenario between 2 devices connected on public IP addresses behind my AT&T gateway. In similar tests without a VPN, I was getting 980mbps. So there was no bottleneck. I also have 2x Beryl AX for travel.

With that said, it has worked great so far, but the VPN performance gain is minimal over the Slate AX. However, it does have 2.5GE vs the 1GE ports on the Slate AX. This may be beneficial if you are also using it as a gateway for LAN devices. I am only using it as a VPN router for WireGuard and TailScale with LAN access to my NAS. If you can get it on sale, it is a great little device for the money.

Been waiting for something like this for people with 1.5gb + fiber internet that want a standalone router. Another manufacturer's charger doubles for a 2.5gb router.

Push my eero pro 7 to bridge mode, added Brume 3. Flawless. Now I have full control of IP addresses. AdGuard is a bonus. I get more & better stuff for free than Eero cloud service. My fiber internet is 2gb and gets around 2gb.

I live in a rural area. Went from 25mb copper to 150mb fibre. Download and upload was faster but, overall lag still there. Loaded ping not a lot better on fibre Vodaphone Power Hub. Plugged in Brume 3, tried a few options, tried SQM and loaded ping now less than idle ping with only a small trim from overall upload and download speed. Lag is noticeably better. Wireguard VPN into Proton works great too, VPN download speeds excellent. I am a complete novice with this stuff, it was easy for me to do. Is it worth ÂĢ110 to fix latency? For me, yes. Great device.

All OK, but miss the aluminium case of its predecessor Brume 2.

Brume 3 is truly everything you could want in your home or office with a rock-solid performance.

I picked up the Brume 3 to replace my Netgear DDWRT R9000. Setup was straightforward right out of the box. Since I don’t need or use I ran it purely wired with some TP Link Deco AP’s — and I honestly can’t tell any real-world difference in performance compared to the bigger/more expensive “big brother” models like Flint 2 or even Flint 3. The DPI feature is a nice touch unfortunately you can do anything with it, like policy-based routing etc. Nevertheless nice to look at.

The Router delivers excellent speeds (up to that advertised 1100 Mbps on VPN), handles multi-WAN, OpenWrt customization, and DPI/security features flawlessly. Super compact, fanless, and reliable — exactly what I needed for a secure, high-performance wired setup without the wireless overhead.

If you’re looking for a powerful VPN/security gateway that just works (especially if you don’t need built-in Wi-Fi), this is an outstanding choice. Highly recommend!

Perfect device for VPNs and analyzing traffic

      This thing is great!

For people who want more granular control over their internet / home networks, this thing works a treat. Very fast processor for hosting a VPN client (see attached photo speed with VPN running as a client on my router powering my home network) - with options to set up multiple vpn configs that you can turn on or off with proverbial flip of a switch.

You can configure different VPN servers, or even different VPN providers for different devices if you needed, e.g. Proton for your home desktop, Windscribe for your work devices, with individual configured VPN servers for your IOT devices etc.

You can analyze traffic at a very granular level - I can see for instance what my phone (over wifi) is querying through the router or what your smart device is trying to do (phoning home etc.) - then you can block those requests quite easily.

Adguard is built in to the router which works well, and you can see real-time what requests it's blocking automatically.

I was thinking of getting a Flint 3- but the VPN speeds were not as good as the Flint 2, while the Flint 2 wasn't a tri-band router. As I already had a budget tri-band router (that was awful with a VPN), buying this device (Brume 3) ended up saving me money - less than 1/2 of one with a router built-in which I already had.

The only thing I'll note is the obfuscation feature being 'built-in' isn't actually handled by the router itself, you need a subscription to a specific wireguard VPN that uses "AmneziaWG" - and those are few and far between, more over it seems like it's a very new altered wireguard protocol that has some growing to do. That said it works well for me as is; and I think there are some providers (you can Google it) with obfuscation built into their config (you have to make sure you can download the obfuscation configuration for the router, not just have it be available on their app/desktop client). Something to be aware of anyways.

All in all, this is exactly what I wanted! Great for tinkerers or those serious about their home privacy.
