OpenAI models are set to leave Cursor on November 12, 2026
OpenAI says it is winding down its contract to provide OpenAI models to Cursor (now owned by SpaceX), with a proposed shutoff date of November 12, 2026. Until then, Cursor keeps the OpenAI models it uses today, but OpenAI says Cursor may end access sooner and that future models, including its upcoming Astra, wonât be added. As of Oct 23, 2026, Cursorâs models page still lists GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna. Nothing else about Cursorâs plans or prices changes because of this.
If you use GPT in Cursor: your options
OpenAIâs help center lists three ways to keep using its models inside the Cursor app: paste your own OpenAI API key (billed at OpenAI API prices, separate from any Cursor or ChatGPT subscription), install the Codex IDE extension and sign in with ChatGPT or an API key, or connect a compatible gateway such as Amazon Bedrock or Azure. All three cover only local Chat and Agent work. OpenAI notes that your own key doesnât work in Cursor Tab, Auto, Cloud or Background Agents, Automations, the Cursor CLI, or Cursorâs API and SDK. Cursorâs own docs also say the $8 Plus plan doesnât allow third-party models or your own API keys, so the API-key route needs Premium ($30/mo) or higher.
The rest of the model list stays
Claude, Gemini, Grok and Cursorâs own Composer models remain on the models page. On Premium and above, third-party models (Claude, GPT, Gemini) are billed at the modelâs API list price from prepaid credit; Plus covers Cursorâs own models (Grok 4.7, 4.6, 4.5 and Composer 2.5) only.

Free; Plus $8/mo (Grok/Composer only); Premium $30/mo; Super $100; Ultra $200; Teams $30/$100/$200 per seat. Weekly shared Grok+Cursor pool. Third-party models (Claude/GPT/Gemini) on Premium+: API list price via top-ups. Legacy Pro $20/Pro+ $60 still work for existing subs (closed to new signups Oct 12, 2026). Is the price on this page current?
It was last checked on 2026-10-23. AI coding plans change often, so confirm on the vendor's pricing page before you pay.
Will Cursor still have GPT models after November 12, 2026?
Probably not through Cursor itself. OpenAI proposed November 12, 2026 as the shutoff date for its models in Cursor and says no future models will be added; Cursor may end access sooner. You can still use OpenAI models in Cursorâs local Chat and Agent with your own OpenAI API key (Premium or higher), the Codex IDE extension, or a compatible gateway.
Can I use Codex inside Cursor?
Yes. OpenAIâs Codex IDE extension installs in Cursor and signs in with an eligible ChatGPT subscription or an OpenAI API key. It runs as its own panel and doesnât change the models Cursorâs Chat, Agent or Tab use.
