A chlorine tank explosion took place at the Phuket Municipal Waterworks on Damrong Road in Phuket Town. The incident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m today, July 28th, 2026., prompting an immediate response from provincial and municipal leaders.
Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom, accompanied by Worath Surawadee, head of the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, Muang District Chief Siwatch Rawangkul, and Phuket City Mayor Supachok Laongpetch, inspected the site to oversee emergency operations. Police closed surrounding roads while fire crews sprayed water to disperse chemical fumes. The situation was brought under control within one hour.
Municipal teams also surveyed nearby homes to assess damage from the blast’s shockwave. Governor Chotnarin instructed all agencies to coordinate closely, focusing on public safety and environmental protection as top priorities. Officials implemented chemical containment measures to prevent chlorine dispersion and confirmed that monitoring will continue until conditions return to normal.
Mayor Supachok confirmed the explosion originated from a chlorine storage tank used in water treatment. He stressed that the incident has not disrupted the city’s water supply and urged residents not to panic. While some chemical odor was detected initially, authorities assured the public that there is no health risk.
Phuket officials have asked residents to avoid the area until safety is fully verified and to follow updates from government channels. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
