A video posted to Reddit shows a Model Y driver at an Austin Supercharger using Emergency Drive Away early on Sunday, Oct. 25, apparently by mistake. Tesla has said Supercharger repairs can cost up to $25,000. The first documented real-world use of Tesla's Emergency Drive Away feature appears to have been a mistake: a Model Y driver at an Austin, Texas, Supercharger pulled away with the cable still attached early on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, the morning of the city's F1 race.

Photo: Ethan Llamas / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 (cropped, resized).
The first documented real-world use of Tesla's Emergency Drive Away feature appears to have been a mistake: a Model Y driver at an Austin, Texas, Supercharger pulled away with the cable still attached early on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026, the morning of the city's F1 race. A Reddit user who was charging nearby posted a video of it in r/TeslaLounge, and both Not a Tesla App and Teslarati reported it on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

What the video shows

According to Not a Tesla App, the short clip shows the driver tapping through prompts on the touchscreen, then pulling forward while still plugged in. A few seconds later he gets out and walks back to the stall. The poster wrote that he "heard a pop" and "genuinely felt bad for the dude," who looked exhausted and "only seemed to half read the prompts."

Why it matters

Cost: Tesla has said repairing a Supercharger stall after a breakaway can cost up to $25,000. Both outlets note that the driver can be held responsible if it wasn't a real emergency.

Safeguards: shifting out of Park while plugged in brings up a red warning, and the driver has to hold the brake and tap "Activate." Not a Tesla App reports that short camera clips are sent to Tesla to check that there was a real emergency.

After use: the car's charge port is damaged too, and Tesla requires a Service visit.

Where: the feature arrived with software 2026.38.3 and only works at U.S. Superchargers. Not a Tesla App says it excludes legacy Model S and Model X built before 2021.

We explained how the feature works when it launched: see Superchargers hit a record 2.4 TWh in Q3, plus Emergency Drive Away.

What we don't know

Neither outlet says whether this driver will be charged for the damage, and Tesla hasn't commented. Not a Tesla App notes that Tesla charging director Max de Zegher has said the feature will be improved based on feedback. The poster suggested stronger warnings, such as a flashing red screen and a loud alert.

Owner takeaway: if you just forgot to unplug, stop and unplug. Read every prompt that appears when you shift while connected.

A Tesla recruiter posted on Oct. 28 that Tesla is "officially coming" to Vietnam, listing five jobs, including a charging project developer. A Tesla Motors Vietnam company was registered in Ho Chi Minh City in September. Tesla is "officially coming to Vietnam," Tesla recruiter Ricky Ip posted on X on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, as the company advertised its first five jobs in the country.

Photo: Chanokchon / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 (cropped, resized).
Tesla is "officially coming to Vietnam," Tesla recruiter Ricky Ip posted on X on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, as the company advertised its first five jobs in the country. Electrek reports the openings are Sales Manager, Service Manager, HR Business Partner, Purchasing Manager and Project Developer, Charging. It's the first on-the-record sign from inside Tesla that a launch is coming. Tesla itself hasn't announced anything.

What's already on file

A local company: Reuters, via CNA, reported on Sept. 14 that Tesla Motors Vietnam Limited Liability Company was registered in Ho Chi Minh City with charter capital of 77.667 billion dong (about $3 million).

What it can do: the filing allows wholesale and retail sales of cars and parts, plus related import, export and distribution.

Who runs it: the filing lists David Jon Feinstein as chairman and Isabel Ching Fan as general director, Reuters reported. Tesla didn't respond to Reuters at the time.

The VinFast problem

Electrek says local EV maker VinFast has sold about 36% of all new cars in Vietnam this year, more than its next five rivals combined. The charging job suggests Tesla plans to build Superchargers there.

What we don't know

There's no word on models, prices, store sites or a launch date. Electrek notes that Tesla began hiring in Thailand in September 2022 and opened orders three months later, and began hiring in the Philippines in September 2024 before a launch in early 2025. That pattern isn't a promise. For another Asia-Pacific market change this week, see Tesla cancels the Cybertruck for Australia and New Zealand.

A Tesla Semi caught fire on southbound I-880 in Hayward, Calif., around 5:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27. No other vehicles were involved and no one was hurt. CHP closed the freeway in both directions, and all lanes were open again early Wednesday. The California Highway Patrol closed the freeway in both directions because of "the potential risk of hazardous chemical smoke," CBS San Francisco reported.

A Tesla Semi caught fire on Interstate 880 in Hayward, California, at about 5:35 p.m. PT on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, and there was no crash. The California Highway Patrol closed the freeway in both directions because of "the potential risk of hazardous chemical smoke," CBS San Francisco reported. No injuries were reported, and the cause is under investigation.

What happened

Where: southbound I-880 between Winton Avenue and the Highway 92 interchange, per CHP via CBS San Francisco.

The driver: got out unhurt and told officers the truck caught fire and they didn't know why, Electrek reports. No other vehicles were involved.

Reopening: northbound lanes reopened shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday. Electrek says CHP Hayward posted that all lanes were open at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, roughly 10 hours after the fire started. CHP had first warned the battery could burn for 15 to 18 hours.

Electrek says CHP photos show crews laying foam around the burned tractor, with the front of a Premier Trailer Leasing trailer charred behind it. The truck's operator hasn't been named, and Tesla hasn't commented.

Not the first time

Electrek points to an August 2024 fire on a Tesla-operated Semi on I-80 near Emigrant Gap, Calif., which the NTSB later investigated. The new fire comes as Tesla ramps the truck: see Tesla Semi is in volume production in Nevada.

What we don't know

Investigators haven't said what started the fire, whether the truck was charging recently, or who operated it. We'll update if CHP, the NTSB or Tesla releases more.

Ford Has Cast 5,000 Giant 'Unicastings' for Its Fathom EV Pickup

Ford said on Oct. 28 it has produced more than 5,000 large aluminum unicastings for the Fathom midsize electric pickup. Each truck uses a front and rear casting that replace 146 structural parts, ahead of a 2027 launch. The update came from Vladimir Bogachuk, Ford's chief engineer of advanced vehicle structure architecture, on Ford's From the Road blog.

Ford has produced more than 5,000 large aluminum "unicastings" for its Fathom midsize electric pickup at its Shelbyville Technical Center, the company said on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026. Each Fathom uses two, front and rear, which Ford says replace 146 structural parts. The update came from Vladimir Bogachuk, Ford's chief engineer of advanced vehicle structure architecture, on Ford's From the Road blog.

How Ford makes them

Melt and cast: aluminum ingots melt at about 1,300°F (700°C), and the metal is injected into a front or rear structure mold.

Finish: a robot moves each casting to a quench tank, then it is trimmed and machined.

Checks: industrial X-ray scans for pores and voids, dimensional measurements in a climate-controlled room, optical surface scans, and lab tensile and chemistry tests on samples. Batches stay on hold until they pass.

Where they go: Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, for process testing and Fathom prototype builds.

Why it matters for Tesla watchers

Electrek calls it the clearest sign yet that Ford is all-in on the large-casting approach Tesla popularized with its Giga Press. Ford says the castings let it split a traditional assembly line into three branches that build sections of the truck in parallel. Ford also says the parts are "engineered for modular repairability," which addresses the main worry about big castings: repair costs after a crash.

The Fathom was priced at $28,350 before fees when preorder invites opened; see Ford opens Fathom preorder invites. Ford is still targeting a 2027 launch.

CATL told investors on Oct. 27 that its sulfide-based all-solid-state battery program has moved to 20 Ah sample trials and is aiming for about 500 Wh/kg. It still targets small-batch production in 2027 and scale around 2030. CATL, the world's biggest EV battery maker, said on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, that its all-solid-state battery program has moved from a 10 Ah-class validation platform to 20 Ah sample trials.

CATL, the world's biggest EV battery maker, said on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, that its all-solid-state battery program has moved from a 10 Ah-class validation platform to 20 Ah sample trials. The update came in answers to investors on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange's Hudongyi platform, CarNewsChina reports. CATL is aiming for an energy density of about 500 Wh/kg and still plans small-batch production in 2027, with large-scale manufacturing around 2030.

Key facts

Chemistry: sulfide-based solid electrolyte. Electrek notes that keeping solid parts in stable contact is still a hurdle.

Team: more than 1,000 people work on the program, per CarNewsChina.

Readiness: chairman Robin Zeng said in June that all-solid-state batteries are only at level four on a nine-level scale.

Market position: Electrek, citing SNE Research, says CATL held 39.9% of the global EV battery market in the first half of 2026.

What CATL hasn't said

CarNewsChina stresses that 500 Wh/kg is a target, not a confirmed production spec. CATL hasn't given trial output, carmaker customers, a vehicle launch date or its anode design. Durability, yield and cost will decide whether the cells make it into cars.

The race

Toyota with Idemitsu aims to commercialize sulfide all-solid-state batteries in 2027–2028. Samsung SDI targets mass production in the second half of 2027, and BYD plans limited batches in 2027. Startups are moving too: see QuantumScape's planned 100 MWh line.

Every new Tesla can now run tools and gadgets from its battery through Powershare, Tesla North America said on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, but only in the United States and Mexico. "Every new Tesla can now power your tools or gadgets via Powershare," the @tesla_na account posted on X. TeslaNorth reports that a follow-up post said the setup uses the Mobile Connector with an Outlet Adapter, and that Canada isn't included for now.

What we know

What it does: Powershare is Tesla's name for using the car's battery to power outside loads, such as job-site tools or camping gear.

Hardware: the Mobile Connector plus an Outlet Adapter, per Tesla's follow-up as reported by TeslaNorth.

Where: the US and Mexico only. Tesla hasn't said whether or when Canada will get it.

Earlier steps: TeslaNorth notes that Cybertruck has had Powershare longer, and that an $80 Outlet Adapter turned Model Y Premium into a portable power station for US buyers in August.

How it fits with home backup

This is separate from Powershare home backup with Powerwall 3, which reached new Model 3 and Model Y orders earlier in October. See who qualifies for Powershare home backup.

What we don't know yet

Tesla's posts didn't list a power rating or say whether cars delivered before the change qualify. Owners should check Tesla's Powershare support page and their car's Powershare menu before buying an adapter.

Code in Tesla app 4.62 shows an X Money payment method that could be used for Supercharging, FSD (Supervised) subscriptions and Tesla Shop purchases. Tesla has not announced it, and availability is unconfirmed. Tesla is preparing to let owners pay with X Money inside the Tesla app, according to code found in app version 4.62.

Photo: Oliwier Jaszczyszyn of kontrabanda.net website / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 (cropped, resized).
Tesla is preparing to let owners pay with X Money inside the Tesla app, according to code found in app version 4.62. Not a Tesla App reported on Oct. 27, 2026 that X Money could be set up as a payment method for Tesla Shop purchases, Supercharging and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) subscriptions. Tesla hasn't announced the feature.

What the code shows

A separate teardown of iOS app 4.62.3 by X user Ming (@tslaming) found that Tesla's bundled payment library now has an X Money payment method, a wallet-account display, and payment redirect and completion handling. Ming said availability "is still unconfirmed."

X Money is the payment service built into X. Users can send money and pay from an X wallet balance or a linked bank account.

Not a Tesla App says X Money first turned up in Robotaxi app code last month, hinting at payments for rides.

X Money already has a role at Tesla: it can be used for the $5,000 upfront Roadster reservation deposit, per Not a Tesla App.

Same update, other finds

App 4.62 also added large-screen layouts for iPad, iPhone Duo and Android tablets and foldables, plus code for FSD referral rewards. We covered that in Tesla app 4.62 FSD referral code.

Why it matters

X is owned by SpaceX, and Tesla and SpaceX have both formed special committees to study a possible combination. X Money in the Tesla app would be another link between Musk's companies. There's no launch date, and features found in code don't always ship.

Tesla's owner's manuals for Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck now refer to the 'SI Computer' instead of the 'AI Computer'. The touchscreen in at least one car on 2026.38.5.1 still shows 'AI Computer', and Tesla hasn't announced the rename. Tesla's owner's manuals now call the car's self-driving computer the "SI Computer" rather than the "AI Computer." Not a Tesla App reported on Oct. 27, 2026 that the change appears in the Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck manuals.

Photo: Carl Lender from Sunrise, USA / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 2.0 (cropped, resized).
Tesla's owner's manuals now call the car's self-driving computer the "SI Computer" rather than the "AI Computer." Not a Tesla App reported on Oct. 27, 2026 that the change appears in the Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck manuals. Drive Tesla Canada said it is tied to the manual for software 2026.38.3. Under the new naming, AI4 would become SI4.

What the manual says now

Climate Controls (Pet Mode and Sentry Mode cabin camera note): the feature "is not supported in vehicles with SI Computer 2.0 or 2.5. Touch Controls > Software and look at SI Computer to find out which computer your vehicle has." It previously said "AI computer."

Model Y FSD section, per Not a Tesla App: "The SI Computer installed in Model Y is designed to use this input, rapidly process neural networks, and make decisions."

Not on the screen yet

Drive Tesla Canada said a car it checked on 2026.38.5.1 still shows "AI Computer: Full Self-Driving Computer 3" on the Software screen. Tesla hasn't officially announced the rename.

Why "SI"

Both outlets tie the change to the rebrand of Tesla AI to Tesla Super Intelligence (Tesla SI). That followed SpaceX's switch to SpaceXSI and a Sept. 29 executive order telling federal agencies to use "Super Intelligence" in place of "Artificial Intelligence." For background on SpaceXSI, see our SpaceXSI partner network story.

What it means for owners

Nothing changes about the hardware. Not a Tesla App notes the next-generation AI5 chip could launch as SI5 under the same scheme. That is the outlet's reading of the naming, not a Tesla statement.

Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 9,048 2024-2025 Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron EVs because the high-voltage battery may fail and catch fire. Why: Electrek reports that Audi's Product Safety Committee was told of battery thermal events in other VW Group EVs using the same batteries.

Audi is recalling 9,048 Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron electric SUVs from the 2024 and 2025 model years because the high-voltage battery may fail and cause a fire. NHTSA campaign 26V698 (Audi code 93SK) tells owners to charge to no more than 80% until a fix is ready. The remedy is still being developed.

Key facts

Vehicles: 2024-2025 Audi Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron, 9,048 potential units, filed by Volkswagen Group of America.

Why: Electrek reports that Audi's Product Safety Committee was told of battery thermal events in other VW Group EVs using the same batteries. An internal investigation found the same battery and production characteristics in the Q4.

Incidents: Audi says it isn't aware of any claims, crashes, fires, injuries or deaths linked to the Q4 issue, per Electrek.

What dealers do: run a battery diagnostic and, if needed, set a temporary 80% charge limit.

Letters: interim owner letters are due to be mailed on Dec. 18, 2026, with more once a remedy exists. VINs became searchable on NHTSA.gov on Oct. 23.

Same problem as the ID.4

InsideEVs notes the Q4 e-tron is a mechanical sibling of the Volkswagen ID.4, which was recalled earlier this month with the same 80% advice. For the wider VW Group recall, see VW's 72,668-car battery recall.

What owners should do

Check your VIN with Audi's recall lookup or NHTSA's VIN tool, and keep the charge limit at 80% until your car is repaired.

Waymo is adding nearly 250 square miles of driverless service over the next week in five metro areas: Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area. Waymo announced the expansion in a blog post on Oct. 27, 2026. Electrek reports that the updated maps are already in the Waymo app.

Where it's growing

Los Angeles: down the coast into the South Bay, through Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach to Torrance.

Nashville: further south, including the zoo.

Orlando: coverage on the east side nearly doubles, with more service downtown.

San Diego: north to La Jolla, taking in University City and Clairemont.

Bay Area: further into the South Bay, with a new BART connection at Berryessa station in San Jose. Electrek says the area now runs from San Francisco down the Peninsula to San Jose and Campbell.

Context

Waymo didn't break out square miles by city or say how many vehicles it is adding. Electrek notes that Nashville opened to public riders in April and San Diego only on Sept. 1. Waymo says it now runs in 15 US metros with more than 500,000 paid rides a week.

The news landed on the same day Elon Musk said the robotaxi race "was never a real contest" (our story).
Tesla Robotaxi LLC's Texas registry count reached 1,051 vehicles on Oct. 27, 2026, according to FSD Database's tracker of TxDMV records: 544 Cybercabs and 507 Model Ys. That is up from 970 a day earlier and 248 more than a week ago. Tesla's registered Robotaxi fleet in Texas has passed 1,000 vehicles, and the Cybercab is now the majority.

Tesla's registered Robotaxi fleet in Texas has passed 1,000 vehicles, and the Cybercab is now the majority. FSD Database, which tracks Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) records for Tesla Robotaxi LLC, listed 1,051 vehicles on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026: 544 Cybercabs and 507 Model Ys. The count was 970 a day earlier.

The numbers

Last 7 days: up 248 vehicles (31%).

Last 30 days: up 505 vehicles (93%).

Earlier counts on the tracker: 69 in June, 186 in mid-August, 546 on Sept. 30, 589 in early October, 739 for Oct. 8–14 and 803 for Oct. 16–20.

Tesla Robotaxi LLC was authorized in Texas on May 14, 2026. The tracker shows one complaint on file, from June 5 (a door opened into a parked vehicle). It is listed as closed and non-jurisdictional.

Counts differ slightly

Investor Sawyer Merritt posted on X on Oct. 27 that another 81 Cybercabs had been registered, putting his count at 546 Cybercabs, nearly 200 more in a week. That is two more than FSD Database's 544. Basenor reported that Elon Musk replied "Good." Two days earlier the registry listed 463 Cybercabs, as we reported in our Austin F1 weekend story.

What it doesn't tell you

A registration is not the same as a car carrying riders. Registered vehicles can be in testing, staging or validation.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis posted on X on Oct. 26, 2026 that Tesla's Tampa and Miami Robotaxi zones should include the beaches. Elon Musk replied "Coming soon" on Oct. 27, but gave no timeline, no list of beaches and no new map. Florida's governor wants Tesla Robotaxis to reach the beach, and Elon Musk says that's "coming soon." Gov. Ron DeSantis posted on X at 7:43 p.m. PT on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026: "They need to have the Tampa and Miami ones include the beaches!" Musk replied "Coming soon" at 7:35 a.m. PT on Tuesday, Oct. 27, TeslaNorth reported.

How big the zones are now

DeSantis was quoting a post by investor Sawyer Merritt listing Tesla's Robotaxi service areas:

Austin: 272 sq mi

Houston: 254 sq mi (a 916% increase)

Dallas: 81 sq mi

Miami: 31 sq mi

Orlando: 26 sq mi

Tampa: 24 sq mi

The Florida zones are the smallest of the six driverless markets. Miami opened in early July, and Orlando and Tampa followed later in July. Houston's zone grew on Oct. 26 into the rocket-shaped map we covered.

What we don't know

Musk gave no date, didn't say which beaches, and Tesla hasn't published an updated Tampa or Miami map. DeSantis has backed Tesla in Florida before; this month he said the company's flying Roadster would be legal in the state.

Code in Tesla app version 4.62.0 and later points to a new FSD (Supervised) referral program. If someone subscribes using your link, you get free FSD time on a vehicle you pick. Tesla hasn't announced it and it isn't live yet. Tesla appears to be building referral rewards for FSD subscriptions. You could apply the reward to any vehicle on your account, Not a Tesla App and TeslaHubs reported.

Tesla appears to be building referral rewards for FSD subscriptions. Code in Tesla app version 4.62.0 and later describes a program where you earn a free month (or months) of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) when someone subscribes through your referral link. You could apply the reward to any vehicle on your account, Not a Tesla App and TeslaHubs reported.

What the app strings say

"If someone subscribes with your link, pick which vehicle gets the reward"

"Confirm Vehicle for Reward"

"Select the vehicle you'd like to apply the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) trial to"

The code also includes front and back images of a digital referral "coin."

Why it matters

The subscription is now Tesla's main way of selling FSD. Tesla reported 1.74 million FSD subscribers in Q3 and a 75% take rate on North American deliveries (our Q3 FSD breakdown). Last year Tesla launched FSD gift cards, which cover one month plus tax.

Not live yet

Features found in app code don't always launch, or launch in the form the code suggests. Tesla hasn't announced the program, the number of free months or a start date. For now, the app's referral screen doesn't offer FSD rewards.

In a Munro Live interview, Tesla vehicle engineering VP Lars Moravy and Cybercab lead Eric Earley said they hope Optimus will soon handle plugging in Robotaxis. Employees currently do it by hand, and Tesla is also planning wireless charging at an Austin hub. Tesla wants its humanoid robot to plug in its driverless cars.

Tesla wants its humanoid robot to plug in its driverless cars. In an interview with Munro Live, Tesla's Lars Moravy and Cybercab program lead Eric Earley said today's charging is still manual, and added: "Hopefully, Optimus will help us with that shortly," Not a Tesla App reported.

How charging works today

Employees plug the cars in by hand. A recent video from an Austin Supercharger shows a worker connecting Robotaxis.

The Cybercab has no AC charging. It keeps a NACS port in the rear bumper for Supercharger (DC) charging.

Tesla received FCC approval earlier this year for the Cybercab's wireless charging.

The Austin hub

EVwire reported in August that Tesla's St. Elmo site at 405 E. St. Elmo Road in Austin has 48 V4 Supercharger stalls powered by 12 V3.5 cabinets. City filings for "ST ELMO PARKING AND CHARGING" (TRT #20447, architect ArcVision) describe a "robocar carwash and charging parking lot." A second phase adds two V4 cabinets powering 80 wireless chargers.

More than charging

In the interview, Optimus was also described as a robot that "might service the car" and "might add in the delivery space," with the Robotaxi team calling that combination "incredible." Tesla gave no date for Optimus working at a charging hub. For the factory side of the same interview, see Cybercab output outpacing deployments.

Tesla shares traded at $406.31, up 4%, on the afternoon of Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, according to 24/7 Wall St. ARK Invest had repeated its $4,400 price target for 2031, and the gain came a day after Barclays upgraded the stock. TSLA opened 3.03% higher. Tesla stock is back above $400. These are intraday prices, not the closing price.

Tesla stock is back above $400. TSLA traded at $406.31, up 4%, in afternoon trading on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, 24/7 Wall St. reported. It opened 3.03% higher, according to TradingKey. These are intraday prices, not the closing price.

What's moving it

ARK Invest: After Monday's close, ARK's Tasha Keeney repeated the firm's base-case target of $4,400 a share by 2031. Robotaxis make up most of the value in ARK's model (our story on the model).

Barclays: The rally follows Monday's upgrade to Overweight with a $450 target, which cited a possible SpaceX combination (details).

SpaceX merger review: Tesla and SpaceX have each formed special committees of independent directors to evaluate a merger. Any deal would need both committees, both boards and shareholders to approve it, and no terms have been set.

The broader market

Tesla was well ahead of its peers. The Invesco QQQ Trust was up 1.2% and the Global X Autonomous & Electric Vehicles ETF (DRIV) was up 2%. Rivian traded at $11.72 (up 3%) and Lucid at $3.41 (up 0.2%), per 24/7 Wall St.

The risks

TradingKey pointed to Tesla's cut in 2026 capital spending guidance (from more than $25 billion to about $20 billion), a 2.6% operating margin and a 16% year-over-year drop in energy revenue to $2.88 billion in the Q3 10-Q. The merger talks could also end without a deal. This is news, not investment advice.

South Korea is prosecuting the FSD "jailbreak." The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's traffic crime investigation team said on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026 that it had booked 80 people for illegally activating Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature, and seized 21 unauthorized activation devices, Korea JoongAng Daily reported.

What police say happened

Suspects allegedly used devices bought in Europe, China and elsewhere, or built their own. One connected a European-made unit to their own Tesla. Another, who works in IT, reportedly built a device using information found on GitHub.

Suspects also allegedly traded tips online on how to unlock FSD and how to stop the car keeping a record of it.

The charge is under the Motor Vehicle Management Act, which bans unauthorized software changes that can affect safe operation. The maximum penalty is two years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won (about $15,000).

"Safety risks were confirmed, including the possibility that FSD may fail to properly recognize driving conditions or operate differently from the driver's intentions," a police official said.

Why owners try it

In Korea, FSD is legal only on US-built Teslas (Model S, Model X and Cybertruck), which are exempt from Korean safety certification under the Korea-US free trade agreement. The China-built Model 3 and Model Y haven't passed Korea's standards for the feature. Of 229,311 Teslas on Korean roads as of August, 47,458 (20.7%) can legally use FSD, according to Carisyou Data Lab.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport asked police to investigate in April. Electrek noted the devices plug into the car's CAN bus to get around the regional software lock, and that Tesla began remotely detecting them and stripping FSD from affected cars in April. Police said the investigation is ongoing with technical help from the ministry and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority.

Elon Musk posted on Oct. 27, 2026 that Tesla's Robotaxi race with Waymo in Austin "was never a real contest," after a Robotaxi Tracker chart showed Tesla's 438,000 driverless Austin miles in the week to Oct. 18 topping Waymo's 406,000 Q2 weekly average.
One city, one week, and a lot of noise. Elon Musk replied on X early Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026 to a chart from the community site Robotaxi Tracker, saying Tesla's Austin race with Waymo "was never a real contest." He also wrote "Log curve in blue, exponential in red," EV reported.

The numbers

Tesla, Austin: 438,000 miles with no safety monitor aboard in the week to Oct. 18, up 30% from the week before, from Tesla's Robotaxi safety report.

Waymo, Austin: an average of 406,000 miles a week in Q2 (5.28 million for the quarter), from Waymo's Safety Impact data hub.

All markets: Waymo averaged 3.90 million rider-only miles a week in Q2, about seven times Tesla's 558,000 in the week to Oct. 18.

Cumulative: Tesla reports 3.11 million driverless miles since Jan. 22, 2026. Electrek put Waymo at 271.3 million rider-only miles since 2020.

The caveats

The comparison mixes periods: Tesla's latest week against Waymo's April-to-June average, because Waymo publishes about three months after each quarter ends. The companies also count differently. Per the tracker, Tesla's figures include miles where a remote operator assisted the car, while Waymo reports rider-only miles, EV noted.

Austin is about 79% of Tesla's weekly driverless miles, Electrek said, and the surge follows the Sept. 3 launch of public Cybercab rides there. Robotaxi Tracker counts 463 Cybercabs registered in Texas, 337 of them added in the last 30 days. Tesla Robotaxis still don't take highways; Waymo has run freeway rides in Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles since November 2025, Electrek added.

Tesla vehicle engineering VP Lars Moravy said in a Munro Live Cybercab deep dive, shared by Tesla's Robotaxi account on Oct. 26, 2026, that the Cybercab line "can run so fast" it doesn't run every day and "is currently outpacing our deployments." The line is about 78% automated, with a goal of 100% and a 10-second cycle time.

Photo: Carl Lender from Sunrise, USA / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 2.0 (cropped, resized).
Tesla can build Cybercabs faster than it can put them to work. "We don't run every day because the line can run so fast. It's currently outpacing our deployments," vehicle engineering VP Lars Moravy said in a new Cybercab deep dive from Munro Live, Teslarati reported. "Right now the manufacturing line's ahead." Tesla's Robotaxi account shared the video on X on Monday, Oct. 26.

Inside the line

The "unboxed" process builds front, rear, side and center modules separately before a short final line of 25 fully automated stations, which Tesla's team estimated is a fifth to a tenth of what a Model Y needs.

The line is about 78% automated; the framing line is at 100%. The stated goal is "100% automation in 10 second cycle time."

There's no paint shop: only the side modules are coated, and exterior panels get their color in the molding machine. Engineers said the car is designed to run at least 500,000 miles.

The pack is an 88S6P layout of 4680 cells in a steel enclosure, with each module potted separately so one can be swapped. The drive unit uses an 11:1 gear ratio versus roughly 9:1 on most Teslas.

Where the cars go

On the Q3 call Moravy said the line's listed capacity of more than 125,000 a year undersells it. EVBytes noted Tesla has 463 Cybercabs registered in Texas, plans Dallas service next month, and aims to deliver Cybercabs to customers by the end of 2026, while every unit built so far has gone to Tesla's own fleet. Tesla hasn't disclosed how many Cybercabs it has built.

Tesla emailed Cybertruck reservation holders in Australia and New Zealand on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026 to say plans to produce the truck for both countries "have been discontinued." It will refund any payments, typically the A$150 deposit taken from late 2019, and offers a free one-year FSD (Supervised) subscription with a new Model 3 or Model Y.

The Cybertruck isn't coming Down Under. Tesla emailed reservation holders in Australia and New Zealand on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, the day after its Q3 results: "After careful consideration, plans to produce Cybertruck for Australia and New Zealand have been discontinued. As a result, we're unable to fulfil your reservation and it will be cancelled."

What reservation holders get

A full refund of any payments made, usually the A$150 deposit taken from November 2019, processed "within 30 days of confirmation" of refund details, a Tesla spokesperson told Information Age.

A complimentary one-year FSD (Supervised) subscription when they order a new Model 3 or Model Y, applied after delivery. CarExpert valued it at A$1,788 at the current A$149-a-month price.

Why it ended

Tesla didn't give a reason beyond "careful consideration." The Cybertruck is built only in left-hand drive, and Australia also requires certification under its own design rules, Electrek noted. Tesla closed the Australian reservation page in May 2022 and replaced it with a "Get updates" button, without refunding deposits at the time.

"We remain focused on the road ahead for Tesla in Australia and New Zealand, including Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and the recently launched Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive," the spokesperson said. Tesla hasn't disclosed how many reservations were cancelled.

Fort Bend County, Texas commissioners approved four agreements on Oct. 22, 2026 for Tesla's proposed $10 billion "Project Crystal Sun" solar plant: a 10-year 100% abatement on equipment, then 90% rebate grants for 20 years (25 with a jobs trigger). Tesla hasn't committed to building there. A Texas county has put its offer on the table.

A Texas county has put its offer on the table. Fort Bend County commissioners voted 4-0 on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026 to approve four agreements for Tesla's proposed $10 billion solar manufacturing plant, code-named "Project Crystal Sun," near Richmond, southwest of Houston, Electrek reported. Interim County Judge Daniel Wong abstained because his engineering firm has worked with Tesla.

The deal

Years 1–10: a Chapter 312 abatement of 100% of county property tax on equipment and other tangible personal property. Land and buildings stay "fully taxable at all times."

After that: a Chapter 381 agreement rebates 90% of county equipment taxes as an annual grant for 20 years. If Tesla averages at least 12,000 employees for two straight years in the first decade, the period stretches to 25 years, Electrek said.

Inventory: handled through Port Freeport's Foreign-Trade Zone No. 149, with payments in lieu of taxes set at zero during the abatement.

Commitments: start construction by June 30, 2027, begin commercial solar-cell production by Dec. 31, 2030, and invest $10 billion. The county's agreement cites about 9,712 employees at full build-out.

Houston Public Media said Tesla is eyeing more than 1,000 acres and that incentives could span 30 to 35 years in total, per county documents. Tesla still hasn't committed to building the plant in Texas. The county hasn't put a dollar figure on the total tax break.

Tesla expanded its Houston Robotaxi service area on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, with a rocket-shaped map that now runs from northwest Harris County to downtown and Bellaire. Robotaxi Tracker lists the zone at 254 square miles, served by a community count of 34 driverless Model Ys. Houston, it has a bigger map.

Photo: Jenny Hautmann / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 (cropped, resized).
Houston, it has a bigger map. Tesla expanded its Robotaxi service area in Houston on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026. The official Robotaxi account on X announced it with "Houston, we have liftoff. Bigger service area now live," alongside a map shaped like a rocket.

Where you can ride now

Service had been limited to a zone of about 25 square miles in northwest Harris County, around Jersey Village, Willowbrook and part of FM 1960, since the April launch, Electrek reported.

The old zone is now the rocket's nose cone. A long body runs southeast to downtown Houston and Bellaire, where it flares into fins.

Riders can hail across much of the 610 Loop and northwest Houston, but part of the northeast Loop falls outside the map, Houston Public Media reported.

Community site Robotaxi Tracker lists the new area at 254 square miles, per Electrek. Tesla didn't publish a figure.

Big map, small fleet

Robotaxi Tracker counts 34 unsupervised Model Ys in Houston, up from 22 three months ago, and no Cybercabs yet, Electrek said. That's a community count. Tesla hasn't disclosed its Houston fleet size. Elon Musk replied to the map on X: "I swear it's just a coincidence."

Waymo also runs driverless rides in Houston, and Amazon's Zoox is testing there but doesn't take public riders, Houston Public Media noted. Tesla still says safety is its main limit on expansion, Electrek added, and a bigger geofence doesn't mean more cars on the road.

Car-sharing marketplace Turo said on Oct. 26, 2026 that from Oct. 28, US guests can search for and book Teslas with FSD (Supervised) turned on, with status verified through a direct Tesla integration. Eligible US hosts can get a free one-month FSD trial. A weekend rental could become the new FSD test drive.

Photo: SirAsdof / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 (cropped, resized).
A weekend rental could become the new FSD test drive. Turo announced on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026 that starting Wednesday, Oct. 28, US guests will be able to search, find and book Teslas with FSD (Supervised) turned on. Turo checks each car's FSD status through a direct API integration with Tesla.

How it works

Hosts link their Tesla account to Turo. FSD status is then verified automatically and shown on eligible listings.

Eligible US hosts can get a free one-month FSD (Supervised) trial. After that it's Tesla's regular $99-a-month subscription, Electrek noted.

Turo says "thousands" of FSD-enabled Teslas are already listed. It didn't give an exact number. The Model 3 and Model Y are Turo's third- and fourth-most popular models so far this year.

Turo encourages guests to read Tesla's FSD (Supervised) documentation and safety guidelines before pickup.

"This industry-first integration with Tesla is another example of how Turo is redefining what car rental and access can look like," Turo CEO Andre Haddad said.

Why Tesla cares

Tesla reported 1.74 million active FSD subscriptions in Q3, a metric tied to Musk's 2025 CEO Performance Award. One of that award's milestones is 10 million, Electrek noted. Paid subscriptions count toward the goal, but free trials don't. Electrek also pointed out that FSD (Supervised) is a Level 2 system, so the renter remains responsible at all times. Turo didn't say who is liable if a guest crashes with FSD engaged.

Tesla said on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026 that Latvia has approved FSD (Supervised), sold in Europe as Tesla Assisted Driving. Latvia is the 10th EU country to recognize the Netherlands' provisional approval, Reuters reported. Latvia's road safety agency CSDD classified it as Level 2. All three Baltic states now allow Tesla's supervised driving software.

Photo: Perituss / Wikimedia Commons, CC0 (cropped, resized).
All three Baltic states now allow Tesla's supervised driving software. Latvia has authorized Tesla's FSD (Supervised) system, Tesla said in a post on X on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026: "Now approved in Latvia. Rollout begins soon." Latvia is the 10th EU country to allow it, Reuters reported.

What Latvia approved

Latvia's Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) recognized the provisional EU type approval that the Dutch vehicle authority RDW issued on April 10. In Europe the system is called Tesla Assisted Driving, EV reported.

CSDD classified it as a Level 2 driver-assistance system. Drivers must watch the road, be ready to take over, and remain fully responsible.

CSDD cited changes Tesla made: a lower threshold for exceeding the speed limit, an automatic reset of any manual speed offset after each trip, and stronger driver monitoring.

CSDD warned that snow, mud and road salt can interfere with the system, and that on gravel roads it may only partly work.

In Europe it's sold as a subscription at €99 a month.

Six months to yes

Tesla applied in Latvia on April 13. During testing, CSDD found problems with traffic lights, lane choice and adapting to speed-limit changes, EV reported. Latvia's Economics Ministry proposed recognition in September. Before Latvia, the countries were Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia, Croatia and Slovakia, ninth on Oct. 16.

EU-wide approval needs at least 15 of the 27 member states, representing at least 65% of the bloc's population. Germany, France, Italy and Spain haven't signed on, and Germany's Transport Ministry has said it plans a vote in December, EV reported.

Barclays analyst Dan Levy upgraded Tesla to Overweight from Equal Weight on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, and raised his price target to $450 from $370. He cited an expected SpaceX combination at a premium, auto growth, energy demand and a sharp rise in Robotaxi miles. Barclays is now a Tesla bull, and the SpaceX talks are a big reason why.

Photo: Ministério Das Comunicações / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 2.0 (cropped, resized).
Barclays is now a Tesla bull, and the SpaceX talks are a big reason why. Analyst Dan Levy upgraded Tesla to Overweight from Equal Weight on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026. He raised his price target to $450 from $370, which CNBC said implies 21% upside from Friday's close.

The case

Merger: "With a combination heavily expected, and with expectation for some premium to TSLA stock, we believe this should drive upside for the stock," Levy wrote. Investing.com reported that he called the deal "a key part of the Tesla bull case." He sees an all-stock SpaceX acquisition of Tesla as the most likely structure.

Autos: Levy said the auto business "is on track to grow this year after two years of declines," helped by FSD demand and rising exports from Giga Shanghai.

Energy: Tesla's energy business is "nearly sold out for 2027" on data-center demand, which Levy believes could support shipment growth above 50%.

Robotaxi: He pointed to "a sharp inflection in Robotaxi miles driven" in recent weeks, and to FSD adoption above 75% on newly purchased North American vehicles in Q3.

The catch

Any deal would need approval from more than 50% of each company's total outstanding voting power. Barclays called that a "high hurdle." Using its $450 target, Barclays estimated Musk could hold about 53% of total voting power in a combined company, Investing.com reported.

Tesla shares rose about 2% in premarket trading Monday. Of 49 analysts covering the stock, 25 rate it buy or strong buy and 22 rate it hold, per LSEG data cited by CNBC. Shares were down more than 17% year to date.
Tesla's driverless Cybercabs and Model Y Robotaxis carried fans to the Formula 1 US Grand Prix in Austin over the Oct. 24-25 weekend, after Tesla quietly extended service to Circuit of the Americas and kept ride requests open until 1 a.m. Cybercab Spotter logged a record 1,250 sightings on Saturday.

Photo: 9yz / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 4.0 (resized).
Race weekend was the Cybercab's biggest public test yet. Tesla's gold two-seat Cybercabs and Model Y Robotaxis lined the roads around Circuit of the Americas for the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in Austin. "Robotaxis as far as the eye can see!" Tesla AI software VP Ashok Elluswamy wrote on X, sharing a photo of a long line of them near the track.

What Tesla changed

Late on Oct. 22, without an announcement, Tesla added a southeastern pocket around COTA, which is about 15 miles from downtown, to its Austin map, Teslarati and EV.com reported.

For nearby drop-offs, last call moved to 1 a.m. It had been midnight since Oct. 17 and 11 p.m. as recently as early October.

Some spots, like COTA Karting, showed as "Service blocked." One rider said the rideshare area was less than a 20-minute walk from the front gate.

The numbers

1,250 Cybercab sightings on Saturday, qualifying day. That's a record, beating 1,072 on Oct. 16. Of those, 1,159 had no one in the driver's seat (Cybercab Spotter, via EV.com).

Sightings count the same car more than once, so they measure activity, not fleet size. The Texas automated-vehicle registry listed 463 Cybercabs at midday Sunday among 970 Tesla robotaxis, per EV.com.

Tesla hasn't said how many rides it gave to or from the circuit, or whether the bigger zone and 1 a.m. cutoff will stay.

Waymo runs in Austin only through Uber, and its service area stops well short of COTA, Teslarati noted. The weekend comes days before Tesla's Oct. 30 deadline to answer NHTSA's questions about how it self-certified the Cybercab.

Tesla has added two passenger features to the Cybercab in Austin: a live rear-camera view riders can open during a trip, and a quiet mode that darkens the whole screen. Both surfaced on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026. Tesla hasn't published release notes for either. No rear window, no mirrors, and now a camera instead.

Photo: Shixart1985 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 2.0 (cropped, resized).
No rear window, no mirrors, and now a camera instead. Cybercab passengers in Austin can now pull up a live rear-camera feed on the center screen during a ride. They can also switch on a quiet mode that darkens the whole display. Both appeared on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, Teslarati and kWh Garage reported.

What riders found

Rider Ethan McKanna spotted the camera view late Friday night: "You can now open the camera to view what's behind you in Cybercab!"

Tesla UI engineer Evan (@CarCoder) added: "You can also tap it to see more cameras, and swipe it up or down to hide and show."

Rider Jackson Blatz posted video of the quiet mode option on Friday morning.

Until now, riders only saw the rear and repeater feeds on the "Please Exit Safely" screen at the end of a trip.

Fast turnaround

Earlier this month, a rider asked Tesla to let passengers view the cameras at any time, and Evan replied "In development," Teslarati reported. About two weeks later the feature shipped. Tesla AI senior staff engineer Yun-Ta Tsai wrote that the "(human) camera view tuning is optimized with Grok," but didn't say which part Grok handled.

Tesla hasn't published release notes and hasn't said whether either feature will come to Model Y Robotaxis or customer cars, kWh Garage noted. Tesla says it aims to deliver the first Cybercabs to customers before the end of 2026.

Tesla has added Jacksonville, Florida, to the cities where Robotaxi is "coming soon," alongside Las Vegas, Phoenix and San Antonio, but it hasn't announced a launch date, service area or fleet size, local outlets News4JAX and Action News Jax reported. Florida's biggest city by area is on Tesla's Robotaxi list.

Florida's biggest city by area is on Tesla's Robotaxi list. Tesla has added Jacksonville to its Robotaxi map as "coming soon." The Robotaxi account posted on Oct. 21 that service was coming to Jacksonville, Las Vegas, Phoenix and San Antonio, News4JAX reported on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026.

What's known, and what isn't

Tesla hasn't announced a launch date, operating area or fleet size for Jacksonville. The notice "does not confirm that Jacksonville has approved a service or that rides are imminent," News4JAX said.

Florida law allows driverless vehicles without a human behind the wheel and stops local governments, Jacksonville included, from imposing their own fees, permits or rules, Action News Jax reported.

Tesla already runs driverless Robotaxis in Miami, Orlando and Tampa. Last month Action News Jax reported that Tesla is coordinating with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The local backdrop

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority's autonomous NAVI shuttle service will pause on Jan. 1, 2027, when its software contract expires. The vehicles will switch to manual operation, which JTA expects to save about $487,000 a month. City Council member Rory Diamond has pushed for private robotaxis, including Waymo and Tesla. "It's mission critical for our city to have robotaxis and Waymos and similar autonomous taxi services," he told News4JAX. Residents interviewed by both stations had mixed feelings.

Rivian is buying its way into the world-model race. Rivian said on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026 that it has acquired Third Dimension AI, a startup whose platform turns real-world driving data into "high-fidelity, controllable 3D environments." Rivian will use it to generate synthetic data and test its driver-assistance and self-driving software. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

The deal

Third Dimension was founded in 2024 by CEO Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokólski. It raised $7 million in seed funding, TechCrunch reported.

Its 15-person team, most of them in the UK, joins Rivian's autonomy and AI group led by SVP James Philbin. The deal also lets Rivian grow its London AI hub.

Rivian says it gets more than 400,000 driving sequences a day from customer vehicles that have camera sharing turned on, according to Philbin.

Why simulation

"These are not synthetic kind of video game styles, they're real things that happen in the world, but now we get that extra dial of being able to move the cameras around, shift other agents, have maybe different lighting or weather conditions," Philbin told TechCrunch. The point is to test rare edge cases without waiting for them to happen on real roads.

Rivian plans to release a supervised, hands-free system for surface streets and highways by the end of this year. R2 robotaxis for the Uber app are due in 2028, TechCrunch said. It's the same playbook Tesla describes for FSD and Robotaxi: train on huge amounts of fleet video, then check the results in simulation.

Tesla Canada has updated its Model 3 Premium Rear-Wheel Drive specs to 584 km of range and 5.2 seconds from 0-100 km/h. Those match the US-built car, which points to a possible return of Fremont-made Model 3s while Shanghai-built orders are paused over quota limits. Tesla hasn't announced anything. Canada's cheapest Tesla may be coming back, but from a different factory.

Photo: Chanokchon / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0 (cropped, resized).
Canada's cheapest Tesla may be coming back, but from a different factory. Tesla Canada has updated the Model 3 Premium Rear-Wheel Drive on its website. It now lists 584 km of range, 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and a curb weight of 1,745 kg, Electrek reported on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026. Canadian owner RJ (@RJTesla) spotted the change first.

Why the numbers matter

The Shanghai-built version, priced at $39,490 CAD, is rated at 463 km and 6.2 seconds. It hasn't been orderable since early October, after Tesla used up its quota for Chinese-made cars.

The new figures match the Fremont-built Long Range RWD that Tesla sold in Canada in October 2024. They also match today's US Model 3 Premium RWD, rated at 363 miles EPA, according to Electrek.

Tesla's site says Shanghai-built orders will resume "if Govt of Canada issues more quota, expected March 2027."

Tesla's comparison page and configurator hadn't changed as of Monday afternoon. Tesla hasn't announced a relaunch or a price.

The tariff problem

Canada's 25% counter-tariffs on US-made vehicles, in place since April 2025, still apply. Electrek estimated that a similar markup would put a Fremont-built Premium RWD at around $65,000 to $67,000 CAD. That's Electrek's estimate, not Tesla pricing, and it would sit above the $50,000 transaction cap of Canada's $5,000 EV Affordability Program. For now, the only Model 3 Canadians can order is the Performance at $74,990.

Volkswagen Group China said on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026 that it has a permit to test Level 3 conditional autonomous driving on public roads in Hefei, Anhui province, and has started testing and data collection. VW is aiming for L3 technology readiness in China in 2027. The permit doesn't allow sales. VW wants to give drivers in China eyes-off driving, the step Tesla says it will skip.

VW wants to give drivers in China eyes-off driving, the step Tesla says it will skip. Volkswagen Group China said on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026 that it has a Level 3 road-test permit in Hefei, Anhui province, and that real-road testing and large-scale data collection are underway. VW is targeting L3 technology readiness in China in 2027.

What the permit does, and doesn't, allow

A road-test permit lets VW test conditional automated driving on designated roads. It doesn't approve L3 cars for sale, CnEVPost and Electrek noted.

VW didn't disclose the models covered, the test routes or the fleet size.

The software comes from CARIZON, VW's driving-tech joint venture with Horizon Robotics, in which VW invested about €2.4 billion for a 60% stake. VW said in July that L3 deliveries could start as early as the second half of 2027.

VW China holds its first Technology Day in Hefei on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

The competition

China's industry ministry gave its first conditional L3 product approvals in December 2025 to Changan's Deepal SL03 and BAIC's Arcfox Alpha S. GAC's Hyptec and XPeng already hold L3 test permits, Electrek said. With L3, the automaker is responsible for the driving while the system is engaged. Tesla's FSD is still a Level 2 system everywhere it's sold, China included, and Tesla has talked about going straight to Level 4.

Elon Musk's public endorsement this week of a possible $3.5 trillion SpaceX-Tesla merger has rattled some insiders, who worry it could invite shareholder scrutiny and delay the process by several weeks, Reuters reported on Oct. 22, 2026, citing a person with direct knowledge of the talks. Musk's own words may slow the deal he likes.

Musk's own words may slow the deal he likes. Elon Musk's public endorsement this week of a potential $3.5 trillion merger between SpaceX and Tesla has rattled some insiders involved in the discussions, who worry it could invite shareholder scrutiny and delay the process by several weeks, Reuters reported on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, citing a person with direct knowledge of the talks.

The disclosure created a "mess" for the process because it could raise questions about how well Tesla shareholders' interests are represented, the person told Reuters. Tesla, SpaceX and Musk did not respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

Where the talks stand, per Reuters

The parties have hired advisers, but discussions are at an early stage, three sources said.

SpaceX approached Tesla in recent weeks. Structures under discussion include a SpaceX acquisition of Tesla or a merger under a newly formed holding company, and the sides are weighing forms of consideration including an all-stock deal.

Advisers are in contact with Musk's lawyers to make sure he is recused from the special committees' discussions.

The SolarCity shadow

Some participants see parallels with Tesla's 2016 SolarCity acquisition, which led to years of litigation over Musk's role. Courts ultimately upheld that deal as fair, and Tesla directors settled related allegations for $60 million, Reuters noted. Columbia law professor Eric Talley told Reuters that Tesla's move to Texas incorporation makes any legal challenge harder to predict: "The Texas thing is a wild card."

On Tesla's Q3 call on Wednesday, Musk said he had nothing to add beyond his comments on SpaceX's call a day earlier, CNBC reported. On that call he called a merger a "good idea," and responding to a question about it he said, "I feel like I'm tap dancing through a minefield."

One of the robotaxi race's biggest platforms is going all-in on OpenAI for office work. Uber began a company-wide rollout of ChatGPT Work, OpenAI's agent for multi-step knowledge work inside ChatGPT Enterprise, on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026. It will be available to more than 30,000 employees across Uber's global workforce, expanding from a pilot of 1,000, OpenAI said.

What Uber gets

ChatGPT Work connects to tools such as Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack to research, prepare meeting briefs, build presentations and analyze data.

OpenAI said GPT-6.1 Sol will be the default model in ChatGPT Work for Uber, plus voice and image generation.

Uber's engineers will keep using Codex for software development.

About 80% of the pilot's early adopters were non-engineers, Uber VP of engineering Sumanth Sukumar told TechCrunch. They used it to analyze operations data, localize training materials and build personal dashboards. Uber did not disclose how much it is spending on the rollout, TechCrunch reported; Sukumar said the company will track how employees use it and let that guide wider AI deployment.

"Uber is putting AI to work across its business," OpenAI president Greg Brockman said in OpenAI's announcement. ChatGPT Work launched in July, and the deal comes as OpenAI pushes deeper into enterprise sales against Anthropic, TechCrunch noted. It follows OpenAI's Google Cloud deal this week.

Nvidia launched Minerva, an AIOps platform that pulls together GPU, network, storage and workload telemetry to catch failing parts in AI data centers, on Oct. 22, 2026 at GTC Berlin. IREN already uses it, and Nvidia listed Tesla among companies that plan to deploy it. Tesla is on the customer list for Nvidia's newest data-center software.

Tesla is on the customer list for Nvidia's newest data-center software. Nvidia launched Minerva, an AIOps platform for running large AI clusters, on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, as part of its GTC Berlin announcements. Nvidia said IREN is already using it, and that Aolani, Bitdeer AI, IBM, Jio, Lambda, Quake AI and Tesla plan to deploy it. Nvidia did not say where or when Tesla would use it.

What Minerva does

Combines telemetry from GPUs, networking, storage, schedulers and workloads, and builds a knowledge graph mapping GPUs, SuperNICs, switches and cables to the jobs running on them.

Uses machine learning on billions of data points per hour to detect anomalies, predict failures and group an "event storm" of alerts into one incident with a likely root cause.

Includes a natural-language AI assistant and can hook into external agent tools or automation, with an option to keep a person in the loop.

Nvidia pitches it around "AI factory yield": GPU hours, goodput, uptime and token production. WebProNews noted the launch post does not put numbers on its claimed gains in time between interruptions or time to repair. Dell Technologies, Lenovo and Supermicro will offer Minerva in their AI factory portfolios.

"NVIDIA Minerva gives our operations team one view across the network, the GPUs and the jobs running on them," IREN CTO Denis Skrinnikoff said.
Tech Mahindra deal

Separately on Thursday, Indian IT services firm Tech Mahindra announced a collaboration with SpaceXSI to help enterprises modernize legacy applications and speed up software delivery, bringing Grok Build into its engineering services. The companies plan joint go-to-market work, industry-specific solutions, and enablement and certification programs, focused on technology, telecom, banking and financial services, manufacturing, healthcare and retail, Tech Mahindra said.

"Most enterprises don't need convincing that AI will change how they build software. What they need is expertise in rolling it out across diverse and large engineering teams without breaking what already works," said Toni Adams, SpaceXSI's head of global partnerships. Reuters reported it is the first time an Indian IT major has partnered with SpaceX's AI division; Tech Mahindra already has similar pacts with Google and Microsoft.

Why it matters

AI revenue was SpaceX's biggest segment last quarter (see our SpaceX Q3 story), and a partner network is how rival labs have pushed into large enterprises. It also follows this week's Grok Bot reports and dashboards launch.

GM Ventures led a $108 million Series B round in Peak Energy, a Burlingame, Calif., maker of passively cooled sodium-ion grid batteries, the startup said on Oct. 21, 2026. Peak says it has over $1 billion in customer orders and will start production at a 4 GWh Sacramento factory in Q1 2027, including for data centers.

General Motors is backing a battery startup run by Tesla alumni to sell grid storage, the business where Tesla's Megapack is the giant. GM Ventures led a $108 million Series B round in Peak Energy, a Burlingame, Calif., developer of passively cooled sodium-ion storage systems, Peak announced on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026. Maverick Silicon, Infinite Capital, Eclipse, Xora Innovation and LG Technology Ventures also invested.

The key numbers

Orders: Peak says it has "over $1 billion" in existing customer orders; Bloomberg put it at about $1.1 billion, mostly a 4.75 GWh deal with Jupiter Power and a 1.5 GWh deal with Energy Vault.

Factory: a 4 GWh-a-year plant in Sacramento, Calif., due to start production in the first quarter of 2027, per Peak.

Funding: at least $173 million disclosed so far, EV calculated. Neither company disclosed Peak's valuation or GM's share of the round.

New market: Peak says the money will help it launch its product for data centers, where it says access to power "has become the primary constraint on growth."

Why sodium-ion, and the GM link

Peak says removing active cooling and scheduled maintenance can cut the cost of energy by up to 20% compared with conventional lithium iron phosphate (LFP) storage. Sodium-ion cells store less energy for their weight, which is why they're aimed at stationary storage rather than cars. GM and Peak announced a partnership in June: GM develops sodium-ion cells in its Michigan labs and keeps manufacturing rights, and Peak integrates them into its systems, according to EV. Peak buys cells from Chinese suppliers for now; "It's already catalyzed in China," CEO Landon Mossburg told Bloomberg.

What it means for Tesla

Peak's founders include Mossburg, who held leadership roles at Tesla, and COO Liam O'Connor, formerly Tesla's VP of global supply management, per EV, and its first sales VP previously led U.S. grid-scale storage sales at Tesla. They're chasing the same data-center buyers Tesla Energy is: Tesla said its storage backlog is at a record, driven partly by data centers, and xAI bought another $269 million of Megapacks this year. Tesla is ramping its own LFP cells and a 50 GWh Megafactory in Texas, a far larger scale than Peak's first plant.

Tesla's 10-Q: SpaceX Was Billed $588M for Megapacks Not Yet Delivered as Unpaid Bills Lifted Q3 Cash Flow

Tesla's quarterly 10-Q filing, released Oct. 21, 2026, says 2026 capex will be "in excess of $20 billion" and discloses $588 million of SpaceX billings for Megapacks that have not been delivered. Electrek's analysis says working capital swings, mostly unpaid bills, drove Q3's $1.53 billion free cash flow.

Tesla's $1.53 billion of Q3 free cash flow leaned heavily on bills it hadn't paid yet, and $588 million of it traces to Megapacks SpaceX hasn't received. Those details are in Tesla's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026, filed on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, and in an Electrek analysis of the filing published Thursday, Oct. 22.

The capex wording

The 10-Q says: "We currently expect our capital expenditures to be in excess of $20 billion in 2026, driven by our SI initiatives, including investments in compute infrastructure and data centers," plus factory and R&D line ramps and Tesla's fleet of "company-operated SI-enabled assets." Electrek noted Tesla had guided to "more than $25 billion" since April. Tesla has spent $13.01 billion so far this year ($2.49 billion in Q1, $5.79 billion in Q2 and $4.73 billion in Q3), so the new floor implies about $7 billion in Q4, Electrek calculated. We covered the call-side version of this in Tesla's capex cut story.

SpaceX and the undelivered Megapacks

According to the 10-Q, accounts receivable from SpaceX were $729 million at Sept. 30, including milestone billings and capacity reservations "for Megapacks that have not been delivered." Deferred revenue on those SpaceX Megapack contracts was $648 million. Net of the $588 million for undelivered Megapacks, Tesla said, SpaceX receivables would be $141 million and deferred revenue $60 million. Electrek said that amount sits in both deferred revenue and receivables. Tesla's Megapack sales to Musk's AI and space businesses were also a theme of our earlier Q3 energy story.

Where the cash flow came from, per Electrek

Operating cash flow was $6.26 billion and capex $4.73 billion, leaving $1.53 billion of free cash flow (matching Tesla's Q3 update).

Working capital changes added $2.59 billion. Without them, Electrek calculated, free cash flow would have been about negative $1.06 billion.

Accounts payable rose $1.92 billion and accrued liabilities rose $1.95 billion in the quarter, Electrek said.

Electrek said $3.67 billion of equipment and construction spending was booked but not yet paid at the end of September, up from $2.63 billion at the end of June.

Electrek called the accounting "somewhat normal" and disclosed, but said the timing items "will reverse when the invoices come due and the Megapacks ship."

New credit lines

The 10-Q also details a $20 billion senior unsecured delayed-draw term loan signed in September 2026 and maturing in September 2029. Electrek reported that Tesla hadn't drawn on its new credit facilities at quarter-end and had $45.4 billion in cash and investments.

Mistral and Nvidia said on Oct. 21, 2026 they will build AI-native engineering workflows using Mistral Large 4 and Nvidia's CUDA-X, Warp and Omniverse libraries, plus public benchmarks for physics AI and engineering agents. Mistral Large 4, about one trillion parameters, is due as open weights in late October.

Europe's top AI lab wants its models to do the simulation work behind cars, planes and chips. Mistral and Nvidia announced on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, at Nvidia's GTC Berlin conference, that they will build "AI-native engineering workflows" combining Mistral Large 4 with Nvidia's CUDA-X libraries, the Warp physics framework and Omniverse 3D tools, Mistral said in a blog post.

What they're building

Faster simulation: Mistral's data-generation and physics-modeling pipelines, accelerated by CUDA-X and Warp, aimed at closed-loop workflows that connect simulation, AI model training and design.

3D assets: integrating Mistral's models with Omniverse libraries for GPU-accelerated 3D scene generation and "SimReady" asset creation.

Public benchmarks: open datasets and benchmarks for physics models, plus evaluations of AI agents in computer-aided engineering (CAE) and chip design (EDA) that measure tool use, multistep workflows, correctness, run time and compute cost.

Mistral named aerospace, automotive and semiconductors as target industries. Nvidia's blog said Mistral plans to use CUDA-X, Warp and Omniverse to accelerate physics simulation and generate training data for engineering AI models. Neither company gave dates for the benchmarks or datasets.

Mistral Large 4

The Decoder reported that Mistral Large 4 has about one trillion parameters, was trained on 3,800 Grace Blackwell GPUs in Europe, and is set to ship as an open-weight model in late October. Mistral wants to expand its computing capacity to one gigawatt by 2030, The Decoder said.

Why it matters for Tesla watchers

The Berlin event also produced Nvidia's European self-driving deals, including Bolt's Lucid robotaxis on Alpamayo and VW and Porsche's shared driving-data loop, as European carmakers lean on Nvidia's stack while Tesla builds its own chips and software.

Several Google DeepMind staff have resigned or are leaving over Google's military AI contracts, the BBC reported on Oct. 21, 2026. Research engineer Sofia Liguori said the push made her feel "ashamed"; researcher Andreas Kirsch said Google can't control how the Pentagon uses its AI. Google says its contracts follow its AI principles.

Some of the people building Google's AI are walking out over how the military uses it. Several employees have recently resigned from Google DeepMind, or are in the process of leaving, over Google's contracts to deploy its AI in military settings, a BBC Eye investigation published on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026 reported.

Who left, and why

Sofia Liguori, a London-based research engineer, resigned this week after three years at the company. "Realising my company is pushing more and more for AI systems in military operations makes me feel ashamed to work at Google," she told the BBC, speaking in a personal capacity. She said her contract restricts her from criticising Google.

Andreas Kirsch, an AI researcher, resigned earlier in October. He told the BBC that "Google's governance and oversight are not sufficient or meaningful enough to deploy AI safely and responsibly in military and classified settings," and that "Google seems to have no right to control or veto how the Pentagon uses its AI and also seems to have limited visibility into how it's being deployed."

Two current DeepMind staff, speaking anonymously, told the BBC that many people who feel strongly about the company's changing ethics position have already left.

What Google says

A Google spokesperson told the BBC: "We work with public sector organisations worldwide and follow a consistent process for reviewing and entering these contracts, including compliance with our acceptable use policies and AI principles." Google said it has dedicated channels for employees to raise concerns and strict policies against retaliation.

The contract at the center

According to the BBC, Google's Pentagon agreement, signed earlier this year, allows its AI models to be used for "any lawful government purpose," including classified work, and says they "should not be used for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weapons (including target selection) without appropriate human oversight and control." The BBC reported that OpenAI, Amazon, Microsoft, SpaceX, Oracle, Nvidia and the start-up Reflection signed similar contracts. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said the U.S. "will become an 'AI-first' warfighting force," and Under Secretary Emil Michael has said "Speed defines victory in the AI era."

Ynet News, following up on the BBC report, noted that the resignations also touch on Google's roughly $1.2 billion Project Nimbus cloud deal with Israel, which Google has said is not directed at classified military or weapons workloads.

Most Forest Green Rivian R2 orders tracked by owners still have no VIN: 239 of 278 (86%) on Wednesday, Oct. 21, EV reported, versus 65% delivered for the most popular color. Rivian told an R2 tracker there is "nothing to report," and its quoted 8–12 week window for the color hasn't run out yet. If you ordered a Rivian R2 in Forest Green, you're not alone in waiting.

If you ordered a Rivian R2 in Forest Green, you're not alone in waiting. Of 278 Forest Green R2s linked to the owner-run tracker Roamer, 239, or 86%, were still waiting for a vehicle identification number (VIN) on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, while 22 had one and 17 had been delivered, EV (eletric-vehicles.com) reported. Rivian told a prominent R2 tracker there is "nothing to report" on the color.

How Forest Green compares

Catalina Cove, the most popular color with 770 tracked orders, was 64.8% delivered, and Launch Green (548 orders) was 64.1% delivered, EV reported.

Forest Green is 11% of the 2,516 R2s on Roamer but 33% of the 725 orders still waiting for a VIN, according to EV.

Roamer lists the median wait from order to VIN for Forest Green as "43+ days" (the plus means the figure isn't settled yet), against a 34-day median across all tracked orders.

On Thursday, Oct. 22, Roamer's live page showed 284 Forest Green orders: 241 waiting, 25 with a VIN and 18 delivered.

Roamer counts only R2s whose owners link their Rivian accounts, not every vehicle Rivian has built.

What Rivian says

X user RivianTrackr said he asked Rivian about "any delays or issues" after several buyers contacted him, and that "the official statement from Rivian is that there's nothing to report on R2 in Forest Green," EV reported. He did not publish the email.

Rivian's support page still quotes 8 to 12 weeks from order confirmation for Forest Green, Borealis and Coastal Cloud, versus 4 to 8 weeks for most other builds, so the data don't yet show Rivian missing its own estimate. EV calculated that an order confirmed on Aug. 19 would hit the 12-week mark around Nov. 11. A Rivian Forums thread on Forest Green delays, opened Oct. 6, now runs to more than a dozen pages, with some owners reporting VINs finally showing up.

At Nvidia's GTC Berlin, Porsche, Volkswagen Group brands and CARIAD said they are building a shared autonomous-driving data flywheel with Voxel51, Nvidia and Microsoft, expected to cut repeated physical test drives by up to 90%. VW Commercial Vehicles also showed its ID. Buzz AD on Nvidia Hyperion. Volkswagen is trying to learn from its fleet data the way Tesla does.

Volkswagen is trying to learn from its fleet data the way Tesla does. At Nvidia's GTC Berlin conference on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, Porsche, Volkswagen Group brands and software unit CARIAD announced they are jointly building a shared autonomous-driving (AV) "data flywheel," with Porsche leading the first implementation together with Nvidia, Microsoft and data-platform company Voxel51. The partners say it is expected to reduce repeated physical test drives by up to 90% and shorten AI regression test cycles by up to 85%.

How it works

Volkswagen brings its connected fleet, which generates data "equivalent to 11,000 average drivers per day," according to Voxel51's announcement.

Voxel51 turns raw fleet recordings into training and simulation data, auditing each drive across roughly 80 checks (sensor integrity, timing, calibration and more) before it is used.

Nvidia supplies Cosmos Data Factory to prepare and augment training data and Omniverse NuRec to rebuild real drives in simulation; Microsoft Azure runs the workloads.

One of the first uses is virtual validation: testing new driving-software releases on reconstructed real-world drives instead of repeating them on the road.

More from Nvidia's Berlin autonomy push

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles showed its autonomous ID. Buzz AD on Nvidia's Hyperion computing and sensor platform, designed to support multiple driving systems. Electrive noted the ID. Buzz AD currently uses Mobileye technology, and the showcase does not mean VW has decided to replace it.

Mercedes-Benz said MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO, developed with Nvidia, "will soon get approval" for urban point-to-point driver assistance in Germany, according to Nvidia.

Nvidia introduced Halos SAFE, a framework for generating traceable AV safety evidence from simulation and road testing, and Alpamayo 2 Edge, a 2-billion-parameter driving model built to run at 10 Hz on DRIVE AGX Thor.

What it means for Tesla

Tesla's pitch has long been that its customer fleet is its data advantage, and European rivals are now building the same kind of fleet-to-simulation loop, with Nvidia as a shared supplier. On the regulatory side, Elon Musk said on Tesla's Q3 call that Tesla is "hoping for an EU-wide approval" of FSD "maybe, you know, within a few months," Fox Business reported, while Mercedes says its own urban point-to-point system is close to approval in Germany.

Tesla Says It's Working 'Very Diligently' on FSD in China as Sales There Fall for a Sixth Straight Quarter

On Tesla's Q3 earnings call on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, CFO Vaibhav Taneja said Tesla is working "very diligently" to get broader FSD approval in China and is talking with regulators. The comments land as Tesla's China sales fell 16% in the quarter to 142,133, while exports from Giga Shanghai hit a record 132,978.

Tesla still doesn't have full FSD approval in China, and it says it's pushing hard to get it. Asked on the company's third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026 whether advanced driver assistance is now "table stakes" in China, CFO Vaibhav Taneja said Tesla is "working very diligently to try and get broader -- I mean, FSD approval in China," according to The Motley Fool's call transcript. "It is hard, but for certain cars, we have been able to have FSD operating," he said.

What Tesla said about China

Taneja said "the leapfrog which we have in terms of this technology isn't there with any of the other Chinese OEMs today."

He said Tesla is "actively working with the regulators in China" and pointed to the company's newly published Robotaxi safety report.

He gave no timeline for a broader approval. In China, Tesla's system is sold as a supervised, Level 2 driver-assistance feature, which chinaelektro.de notes has been called Tesla Assisted Driving since May 2026.

The sales backdrop

The question matters because Tesla's home-market sales in China keep sliding. By the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data compiled by EV (eletric-vehicles.com) and chinaelektro.de:

Q3 China domestic sales: 142,133, down 16.0% from 169,294 a year earlier. Chinaelektro.de says it is the sixth straight quarterly decline.

Q3 Shanghai exports: 132,978, a quarterly record and up 83.2% year over year.

Q3 Shanghai wholesale total: 275,111, also a record.

September domestic sales: 64,837, down 9.4% year over year but Tesla's best month in China this year.

Chinaelektro.de says Tesla has extended cash discounts in China through Oct. 31: 5,000 yuan off the Model 3 and 7,000 yuan off selected Model Y versions. For why Shanghai's export push could get pricier, see China's EV export tax rebate cut; for the full quarter, see our Q3 results story.

What it means for Tesla

Chinese rivals already sell city driver-assistance systems widely, so Tesla's case for premium FSD pricing there depends on getting broader approval. Until then, Shanghai is leaning on exports to Europe and Asia-Pacific to stay busy, while domestic sales keep falling.

Google announced Agent Compute Engine on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026 at AGNTCon + MCPCon in San Jose. The service, which already powers Gemini's agents, gives each AI agent its own hardware-isolated microVM and will open to Google Cloud customers in preview in the coming months. Google is turning the infrastructure that runs its own Gemini agents into a product.

Google is turning the infrastructure that runs its own Gemini agents into a product. At the Linux Foundation's AGNTCon + MCPCon in San Jose on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, Google announced Agent Compute Engine, a compute service that gives every AI agent its own hardware-isolated microVM. Google said in a blog post that it will be available in preview "in the coming months."

What it does

A computer per agent: each agent gets a persistent, sandboxed machine where it can run shell scripts, drive a headless browser and write code with root access, in loops that could run for weeks, The New Stack reported.

Pause while thinking: when an agent finishes a tool call and waits on the model or a person, the microVM is checkpointed and paused, then resumed from a snapshot, Google said.

Nothing to steal: sandboxes hold no secrets. Credentials are added outside the microVM at the network egress, and each one has its own short-lived identity, according to Google. It runs on Cloud Hypervisor with Google's Titanium offload hardware.

Already in use: it started as internal infrastructure for Gemini, Antigravity and Google's model-training pipelines, The New Stack said.

Google also extended its Gemini for business agent-governance controls to agents running in other places, and pointed Kubernetes users to Agent Substrate, its open-source runtime for GKE. Google says Agent Substrate handled 500 activations per second in a 200,000-agent benchmark, The New Stack reported.

The competition

Agent sandboxes aren't new. The New Stack noted that startups E2B and Daytona offer them, and AWS's Bedrock AgentCore also gives each agent session its own microVM. The race to give AI agents safe computers to work on is the same one behind this week's launch of Anthropic's Claude Duet and xAI's Grok Bot pages.

Every 2027 Ford Mustang Mach-E now gets the big battery. Ford opened U.S. dealer order books on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026 for the refreshed electric crossover, which drops the smaller standard-range pack. Select and Premium trims now come only with an 88 kWh battery, while GT and Rally keep a 91 kWh pack, Motor1, InsideEVs and Car and Driver reported. The base Select RWD starts at $42,040 including the $2,045 destination fee.

2027 Mach-E prices (with destination)

Select RWD: $42,040

Premium RWD: $45,040

Select eAWD: $45,050

Trail eAWD: $47,335

Premium eAWD: $48,040

GT eAWD: $53,040

Rally eAWD: $57,335

Ford has not yet published EPA range estimates for the 2027 models and says they will come closer to the on-sale date, according to Motor1. For reference, InsideEVs noted that on the 2026 model the extended-range battery was rated at 320 miles with rear-wheel drive and 300 miles with all-wheel drive.

What the Trail package adds

The $2,295 Trail package is available only on the Select eAWD. It raises ride height by 10 mm at the front and 15 mm at the rear, uses specially tuned struts and springs and the Rally's steering rack, and rides on 19-inch wheels with Michelin CrossClimate 2 tires. It also includes Ford's 400-watt Pro Power Onboard outlets in the cargo area and rear console as standard. Trail buyers must choose BlueCruise hardware when they order, because it can't be added later, Motor1 reported. First Trail models are expected to ship in the first quarter of 2027, InsideEVs said.

A cheaper front motor

All-wheel-drive models get a new secondary front drive unit that Ford says matches the old one's output but costs less to build, which helps offset the larger standard battery, both outlets reported. BlueCruise 1.5 hands-free highway driving is standard on GT and Rally and optional on Select and Premium.

The update lands the same week GM showed off its fourth-generation EV platform, and as Ford plans an EV battery pack plant in Spain.

Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet, a standalone app where Claude works as a proactive agent on its own cloud computer. It is waitlist-only for U.S. Pro and Max subscribers, runs on Claude Opus 5.5, and asks for approval before it sends messages, makes payments, signs documents or deletes anything.

Anthropic wants Claude to come to you instead of waiting for a prompt. The company opened a waitlist on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026 for a research preview of Claude Duet, a standalone app for iOS, Android and claude.ai in which Claude works as a proactive agent. It is starting with U.S. subscribers on the Pro and Max plans, shares those plans' usage limits, and runs on Claude Opus 5.5, according to Anthropic's announcement and help center.

What it does

Morning brief: each morning it looks across your email and calendar, picks what most needs your attention and can draft replies for review.

Background work: it has its own virtual machine with a browser in the cloud, so it keeps working when your phone or laptop is off and notifies you when a task is done.

Uses your Claude setup: it carries over memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account.

Business chores: Anthropic lists finding unpaid invoices and drafting reminders, preparing payroll for review, and building briefs, decks, financial models and dashboards.

The guardrails

Before Claude Duet sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows exactly what it is about to do and waits for approval, Anthropic said. Some actions are off-limits even with approval, including trading securities and moving money between accounts. It checks connected accounts "every few hours" rather than constantly, because nonstop checks would burn through plan limits, so urgent items can arrive between checks. It doesn't make phone calls or text other people, you can't watch or take over its browser yet, and Microsoft 365 isn't supported. Anthropic warned it "might misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent."

The competition

CNBC said Duet is likely to challenge OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse agents. Team and Enterprise plans aren't included yet. The launch comes as Anthropic prepares its planned November stock market listing, and a day after xAI added reports, memos and live dashboards to Grok Bot.

Tesla registered 68,776 new cars across the EU, UK and EFTA in September 2026, up 72.5% from a year earlier, according to ACEA data released Thursday, Oct. 22. BYD grew faster, up 98.7% to 49,953, and battery-electric cars took 29.9% of the EU market for the month. Tesla's European sales kept surging in September.

Tesla's European sales kept surging in September. The company registered 68,776 new cars across the EU, UK and EFTA countries in September 2026, up 72.5% from 39,866 a year earlier, according to figures the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) released on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026. Its market share in that region rose to 5.0% from 3.2%.

Tesla's numbers

EU only, September: 45,866 registrations, up 78.6% from 25,681; 4.7% market share.

EU + UK + EFTA, January–September: 260,575, up 50.0% from 173,719; share 2.5% vs. 1.7%.

EU only, January–September: 188,035, up 68.9%.

AM-online noted that Tesla grew faster than the wider battery-electric market in the region, which rose 59.9% in September and 41.9% year to date.

BYD and Chery are growing faster

BYD registered 49,953 cars across the EU, UK and EFTA in September, up 98.7%, and 283,997 for the first nine months, up 134.6%. That puts BYD ahead of Tesla year to date, and AM-online reported it has also passed Ford (277,269). Chery Automobile's combined brands (Chery, Jaecoo, Jetour and Omoda) reached 260,650 year to date, just 75 cars ahead of Tesla, AM-online said.

EVs hit nearly 30% of EU sales

In the EU alone, 290,117 battery-electric cars were registered in September, up 72.9%, for a 29.9% share of a 971,048-car market, electrive calculated from the ACEA data. Germany (88,599, up 94.7%) and France (65,243, up 107.5%) led the gains. Year to date, EVs hold 22.7% of the EU market, up from 16.1%, while hybrids remain the most popular powertrain at 36.3%. ACEA said its current-year figures are provisional.

The European rebound matches what Tesla told investors this week, when it said it ended the third quarter with its largest vehicle backlog in four years.
Elon Musk said on Tesla's Q3 2026 earnings call on Wednesday, Oct. 21, that Terafab, the chip fab Tesla and SpaceX are building, will need tens of billions of dollars of capital equipment through early 2028 and will probably cost more than $100 billion long term. How the bill is split between the two companies hasn't been decided.

Terafab is going to be expensive. Asked by Deutsche Bank on Tesla's Q3 2026 earnings call on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026 how much capital the chip fab needs, Elon Musk said it is "not going to be less than tens of billions in capital equipment up through early 2028" and "will probably be north of $100 billion long term," according to the call transcript.

Who pays is still open

Terafab is a joint Tesla and SpaceX project. Musk said the companies still have "to figure out like what the sort of relative split is between SpaceX and Tesla in terms of who pays for what." MarketWatch noted that Intel and a few others also have roles in the project.

Orders are already placed

CFO Vaibhav Taneja said Tesla, which is building the first, research fab in Austin, has "already placed most of the orders" for its equipment. Musk said commissioning of that machinery starts in the first half of 2027, with a first test chip hoped for around May or June 2027 and "some kind of useful chip at volume around Q3 of 2028." Taneja added that "real production would be late '28."

Why investors care

The figure lands a day after Tesla cut its 2026 capex guidance to about $20 billion, and as Tesla and SpaceX study a possible merger. Investing.com highlighted Musk's warning of steep capital needs for the chip venture alongside his comments tempering Optimus expectations. Musk repeated on the call that he expects Terafab to be "the most valuable building in the world." For the earlier timeline, see our Terafab test-chip story and the Terafab tracker.

FAW-Volkswagen's Jetta brand launched its first battery-electric car, the M6 sedan, in China on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026. Three trims cost 79,800 to 99,800 yuan, with 465 or 555 km of CLTC range and city navigation assist on the top trim. Volkswagen just put a mid-size electric sedan on sale in China for under $12,000.

Volkswagen just put a mid-size electric sedan on sale in China for under $12,000. FAW-Volkswagen's Jetta brand launched the M6, its first battery-electric vehicle, on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, starting at 79,800 yuan ($11,880), CnEVPost and CarNewsChina reported.

Prices and trims

465 Pro: 79,800 yuan; 42.9 kWh battery, 113 kW motor, 465 km CLTC range, 0-100 km/h in 8.3 seconds.

555 Max: 89,800 yuan; 51.9 kWh battery, 145 kW motor, 555 km CLTC range, 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.

555 Ultra: 99,800 yuan; same battery and motor as the Max, plus highway and city navigation assist (NOA).

Pre-sales opened Sept. 28 at 80,800 yuan, so the launch price is 1,000 yuan lower, CnEVPost said. CarNewsChina put the 465 km and 555 km CLTC figures at roughly 377 km and 450 km on the WLTP cycle.

What's inside

The M6 is a single-motor, front-wheel-drive sedan built on Jetta's in-house "Jiesi" electric architecture. It is 4,806 mm long with a 2,820 mm wheelbase. It uses lithium iron phosphate batteries from CALB and charges from 30% to 80% in 25 minutes, according to CnEVPost. The top trim's driver assistance runs on Horizon Robotics' Journey 6M chip with a vision-based system, and the cabin has a 15.6-inch central screen with Doubao, DeepSeek and Qwen AI assistants plus CarPlay support.

Jetta is also offering launch benefits it values at 26,000 yuan, including first-year coverage for accidents involving driver assistance for original owners of cars with highway or city navigation assist, used non-commercially. The brand, which began operating as a separate company in Chengdu in January, plans five new models by 2028 and is targeting 400,000 to 500,000 annual sales, CnEVPost and Sina Auto reported.

The launch adds to a crowded low-price segment in China, where BYD just put flash charging in its second-generation Seagull from 65,900 yuan.

Tesla shares fell 5.0% in premarket trading to $367.20 on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, the morning after its Q3 report, Investing.com reported. Wall Street split: HSBC kept a $157 target and Goldman Sachs $360, while JPMorgan, UBS, Canaccord and Piper Sandler raised theirs, to as high as $475. Tesla's earnings beat didn't hold up overnight.

Tesla's earnings beat didn't hold up overnight. TSLA fell 5.0% to $367.20 in premarket trading on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, Investing.com reported, after closing Wednesday at $386.47. Yahoo Finance said that, if the drop held after the opening bell, it would be the stock's biggest one-day loss in nearly seven weeks. CNBC put the premarket decline at about 4% and noted the stock is down about 14% this year.

Why it's falling

Tesla beat on adjusted earnings (48 cents a share) and posted $1.53 billion of free cash flow, but investors focused on the outlook. Tesla cut its 2026 capex forecast to about $20 billion from more than $25 billion, Musk set a goal of 5 million vehicle sales a year by the end of the decade, well below his earlier 20 million projection, and meaningful robotaxi revenue isn't expected until 2027-2028, Investing.com reported. "Elon Musk tempered expectations on the Optimus ramp-up expectations and Robotaxi tangible revenue impacts for a year, weighing on the stock," William Blair's Jed Dorsheimer (Market Perform) wrote, per CNBC.

What analysts did

Piper Sandler: raised its target to $475 (Investing.com).

TD Cowen: Buy, $460 target kept, citing better auto margins, the largest order backlog in four years and FSD on more than 75% of North American deliveries (Yahoo Finance).

Canaccord Genuity: Buy, target raised to $442 from $410 (CNBC).

JPMorgan: Neutral, target raised to $430 from $415; called the quarter "incrementally positive" (The Fly).

UBS: Neutral, target raised to $425 from $391 (Yahoo Finance).

Truist: Hold, $370 target unchanged; said Tesla lowered capex "but ramped OpEx instead" (CNBC).

Goldman Sachs: Neutral, $360 target; expects profitability and free cash flow to stay "somewhat pressured" and sees valuation "as full" (CNBC).

HSBC: Reduce, $157 target (CNBC).

Update, 6:53 AM PT: Reuters on the spending pullback

Reuters also put the premarket slide at 5% and tied it to Tesla's lower capex forecast. "Investors are likely to come away with mixed feelings," J.P. Morgan analysts led by Rajat Gupta wrote. "The delay helps near-term cash burn but also suggests delays in investments that matter for fruition of long-term opportunities." The bank said management's comments suggest spending will ramp up in 2027 and 2028 for robotaxi, Optimus, AI compute and Terafab. Reuters said the stock is about 23% below its record intraday high of $498.83 from December 2025 and trades at 188.24 times forward earnings estimates, against 6.58 for Ford and 5.16 for GM. "The risk is Tesla now enters a period of limbo while investors await news on a potential combination with SpaceX," said AJ Bell's Russ Mould.

Update, 7:35 AM PT: CLSA upgrades, Mizuho raises

CLSA upgraded Tesla to Hold from Underperform and raised its target to $400 from $310, citing sentiment around a possible SpaceX merger, Investing.com reported.
