Ubisoft Connect is Ubisoft’s unified PC launcher, storefront, and social platform – and as of version 174.2.0.13389, released in October 2026 and logged by Uptodown with 226,887 downloads on that build alone, it doubles as the mandatory gateway to every Ubisoft game on PC (still confirmed as such as of October 2026), whether you bought the title on Steam, the Epic Games Store, or directly from Ubisoft. Getting it configured correctly from the start saves hours of troubleshooting. This guide walks you through a clean install, overlay setup, cloud saves, Ubisoft+ subscription tiers, the Units rewards system, 2FA security, and Steam Deck compatibility – 12 actionable steps with every relevant setting called out.
Updated October 2026: This guide was re-verified against the current Ubisoft Connect PC client v174.2.0.13389, released October 2026 and already showing 226,887 downloads on Uptodown – superseding the v174.1.0.13380 build released the same month, which Softonic logged at 447.4K total downloads, the v174.0.0.13368 build Uptodown also listed as released in October 2026, the v173.1.0.13333 build from September 2026, the v173.0.0.13316 build from August 2026, and the v172.1.0.13247 and v172.0.0.13225 builds from July and June 2026 respectively – all tracked in Uptodown’s release archive. Key changes since the last revision: Ubisoft has begun the gradual rollout of the all-new Ubisoft Connect PC Beta interface – a full UI overhaul with a redesigned library, customizable player-profile pages, a reworked homepage and a single unified UI tech stack (covered in its own section below). Ubisoft also disclosed that Console/PC monthly active users reached 36 million as of May 2026, per Yahoo Finance’s coverage of the publisher’s earnings release – up from the 34 million figure in its February 12, 2026 Q3 2025–26 sales report, which itself showed December monthly active users climbing 3% year-over-year across calendar-year 2025, and in line with the 36 million MAU figure Ubisoft cited for full fiscal year 2025 in its official FY25 investor release published in August 2025. Ubisoft+ pricing is unchanged at $7.99/month (Classics) and $17.99/month (Premium) in the US as of October 2026. The Steam Deck / Linux workaround (GE-Proton, since the April 2026 client update) remains current and was re-confirmed working through October 2026 – Valve’s upstream Proton still has not shipped a fix. Every version number, price and date below is timestamped so you can tell at a glance whether it still applies to the build you are running.

What Is Ubisoft Connect in 2026?
Ubisoft Connect (internally still tagged as Uplay in many registry keys) is Ubisoft’s all-in-one desktop application for PC gaming. It replaced the older Uplay client in September 2020 and has since grown into the single authentication layer for the company’s entire PC catalog, supporting more than 134 million unique active players in fiscal year 2025 alone, per Ubisoft’s own FY25 investor release published in August 2025 – a marked upgrade from the 100 million figure cited in an earlier November 2025 Gate.com overview, and Ubisoft’s own May 2026 full-year 2025–26 report put the figure at 129 million unique users across Console and PC – spanning 20+ titles, with cross-play available in roughly 80% of Ubisoft Connect games that same year, and by November 2025 Ubisoft had extended cross-platform achievement tracking to more than 50 games through Ubisoft Connect, according to Techno-News. Every Ubisoft game purchased anywhere on PC – Steam, Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store, or ubisoft.com – must pass through Ubisoft Connect for DRM validation and online services before launching.
The current October 2026 release (v174.2.0.13389 per Uptodown, following the v174.1.0.13380 build Softonic logged with 447.4K total downloads and the v174.0.0.13368 build Uptodown also listed as an October 2026 release; the standalone installer is roughly 250 MB and the Microsoft Store package slightly larger) – which UpdateStar’s client telemetry said the July 2026 build accounted for just 17% of installations at the time, out of the 4,178 update checks for Ubisoft Connect it logged in June 2026 – ships with the PC Beta overhaul that redesigns library navigation, introduces new customizable player-profile pages, and expands social features – all detailed in the dedicated Beta UI section below. Note that the standalone Ubisoft Connect mobile companion app for Android and iOS was decommissioned on April 8, 2025, so on-the-go account and Units management now runs through the web account portal rather than a dedicated app – though a legacy Ubisoft Connect Android package (v9.2.12) was still archived on FileHippo as of July 26, 2026, for anyone needing the old APK. What sets Ubisoft Connect apart from rival launchers is its deep cross-platform integration: cloud saves sync between PC and consoles at no extra cost, Ubisoft reported roughly 130 million active Console/PC users in its Q3 2025–26 sales release covering February 2026, per Yahoo Finance’s read of the same report, and on July 27, 2026 Xbox announced that owners of select digital Xbox games can claim a PC version at $0 extra cost via Ubisoft Connect, covering 13 listed games – a benefit Xbox Wire confirmed was expanded that same month to include premium editions and selected add-ons for several of those titles. The Units loyalty economy also lets dedicated players turn in-game challenges into real store discounts.
As of July 2026, Ubisoft Connect also serves as the entry point for two Ubisoft+ subscription tiers – Classics at $7.99/month (50+ back-catalog titles) and Premium at $17.99/month (100+ titles including day-one new releases and all DLC), a subscriber base that Gate.com reported crossed 10 million subscribers during 2025. Neither tier is required to play games you already own, but understanding how the tiers interact with the client unlocks significant savings. For a head-to-head subscription comparison, see EA Play Pro vs Ubisoft+ vs PC Game Pass 2026.
Ubisoft Connect Beta UI 2026: What’s New
Ubisoft actually began rolling out the biggest visual change to the PC client since the 2020 Uplay-to-Ubisoft-Connect rebrand earlier than most players noticed: Neowin reported the refreshed Ubisoft Connect PC Beta – featuring an always-on sidebar and improved library integration – was already reaching PC users by January 2026, officially billed as “the next evolution of Ubisoft Connect.” As of June 29, 2026 it remains a gradual, opt-in rollout – it reaches desktop-app users in phases rather than all at once, and the classic interface remains the default until your account is included. If your client still looks unchanged, you are simply not in the rollout window yet; nothing is broken.
The Beta is more than a re-skin. Under the hood Ubisoft rebuilt the client around a single unified UI tech stack, replacing the previous mix of components. In practice that means faster navigation and a more consistent feel as you move between the library, the store and your profile. Here is what changes for you day to day:
- Redesigned library: larger, wider game icons and a navigation layout built around accessibility and ease of access. Game pages now surface more at a glance – including which titles have an update available – alongside your in-game progress.
- Tile and list views: the library can be browsed as visual tiles or as a compact list, so you control how a large collection is displayed.
- Reworked homepage: a single overview of game updates, news, store deals and your friends’ recent activity, instead of scattered panels.
- Customizable player-profile pages: view and edit your Ubisoft profile directly in the desktop app. Profiles aggregate your cross-platform games and activity so friends can discover what you are playing across PC and console.
- Built-in feedback tool: because it is a Beta, Ubisoft embedded a feedback button directly in the app to collect reports while the rollout continues.
How to opt in (as of June 2026): the Beta is delivered through the standard Ubisoft Connect PC desktop app as Ubisoft expands eligibility – you do not install a separate program. When your account is included, the client offers the new interface and you can switch between Beta and the stable build; consult Ubisoft’s official “Switching to the Beta version of Ubisoft Connect PC” help article for the exact in-app toggle, since the wording is being refined during rollout. Everything in the 12-step setup below works identically on both the classic and Beta interfaces – only the visual layout and menu placement differ, so the instructions in this guide remain accurate regardless of which version you are running.
Prerequisites: What You Need Before Installing
Before downloading the installer, confirm your system meets the requirements below. Ubisoft Connect’s own footprint is modest, but the games it downloads are not – reserve at minimum 50 GB of free space beyond the launcher itself for your first title.
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 7 SP1 64-bit | Windows 10 / 11 64-bit |
| CPU | 2 GHz Dual-Core | Intel Core i5 / Ryzen 5 (4th gen+) |
| RAM | 2 GB | 8 GB |
| Disk (launcher) | 5 GB | 10 GB (NVMe SSD preferred) |
| Internet | Required for install and activation | 25 Mbps+ for comfortable game downloads |
| DirectX | DirectX 9.0c | DirectX 12 |
| macOS | Not natively supported | Use CrossOver 24+ or Parallels on Apple Silicon |
You will also need:
- A Ubisoft account (free) – or you can create one during setup
- Administrator access on Windows to run the installer correctly
- An email address for account creation and 2-Step verification setup
- The official Ubisoft Connect PC installer (v174.2.0.13389, the October 2026 build Uptodown shows with 226,887 downloads) from the Ubisoft download page
Antivirus software occasionally flags game launchers during installation. Temporarily pausing real-time protection for the duration of the installer – not longer – is acceptable. Re-enable your security software before launching the client for the first time.
Step 1: Download the Official Installer
Navigate to ubisoft.com/en-us/ubisoft-connect/download and click Download for PC. Save the file UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe (matching the v174.2.0.13389 build Uptodown listed in October 2026, with 226,887 downloads recorded on that release alone) to your Downloads folder. Avoid third-party download sites – they have historically bundled adware alongside the legitimate installer, and Ubisoft does not authorize redistribution through those channels.
If you prefer the Microsoft Store route, search for “Ubisoft Connect PC” in the Store app and click Install. Windows handles the download and future update delivery automatically. The Store version and the standalone installer are functionally identical; the only difference is how updates are applied going forward.
Before running the installer, verify the file hash to confirm it has not been tampered with. Open PowerShell and run:
Get-FileHash "$env:USERPROFILE\Downloads\UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe" -Algorithm SHA256
Compare the output against the SHA-256 hash published on Ubisoft’s official download page. A match confirms the file is unmodified. If they differ, delete the file and re-download from ubisoft.com directly.
Step 2: Install with Administrator Rights
Right-click UbisoftConnectInstaller.exe and choose Run as administrator. Do not double-click it – some Windows 11 configurations apply per-user permissions by default, which drops files to the wrong location and breaks the auto-updater later.
The installer presents two choices worth noting:
- Installation path – the default is
C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher. Accept this unless you have a specific reason to relocate it. The launcher path is separate from where games install – that is configured per game after setup. - Desktop shortcut – optional. Create it if you plan to launch Ubisoft Connect directly; skip it if you will always launch games through Steam or Epic.
Installation completes in 60-90 seconds on a modern SSD. The client launches automatically after install and checks for updates before showing the login screen.
Step 3: Apply the First-Launch Update
On first launch, Ubisoft Connect always downloads a self-update before anything else. Even the current October 2026 build (v174.2.0.13389 per Uptodown, up from the v174.1.0.13380 build released the same month and tracked by Softonic at 447.4K total downloads, and the v174.0.0.13368, v173.1.0.13333, and v173.0.0.13316 builds that preceded it across October, September, and August 2026) pulls delta patches to reach the precise current build. The update adds 20-80 MB and takes under two minutes on a 50 Mbps connection. Do not close the window during this phase – interrupted updates leave the client in a partial state that requires reinstalling from scratch.
Once the update finishes, the client restarts and shows the login screen. If it hangs at “Starting Ubisoft Connect,” right-click the system tray icon and select Quit, then relaunch manually. This is a known race condition in certain Windows 11 build configurations where the client starts before its own update process fully releases the binary lock.
Confirm your exact build after install: navigate to Help â About Ubisoft Connect. The version string should read 174.2.0.13389 on the October 2026 build Uptodown catalogued with 226,887 downloads – up from the 174.1.0.13380 build (447.4K total downloads per Softonic) released the same month – or a higher number if Ubisoft has shipped another update since this article was published.
Step 4: Create a Ubisoft Account or Sign In
Click Create an account if you are new to Ubisoft. You need an email address, a display name, a strong unique password, and your date of birth. Account creation is free and does not require a payment method unless you immediately subscribe to Ubisoft+.
If you already have an account, click Sign in. Ubisoft Connect accepts your Ubisoft username, email address, or linked platform credentials from Google, Facebook, Apple, Twitch, PlayStation Network, Xbox, and Nintendo. Linking your PSN or Xbox account enables cross-save synchronization between PC and console – handled in Step 8.
Critical pitfall to avoid: If you previously played a Ubisoft game through Steam, a Ubisoft account was created automatically using your Steam email. Check your inbox for a welcome email from [email protected] before creating a new account. Duplicate Ubisoft accounts cannot be merged – they result in a permanently split library and require contacting Ubisoft support to attempt a license transfer, which takes 5-10 business days and is not guaranteed.
Step 5: Enable 2-Step Verification
Ubisoft accounts are high-value phishing targets: they hold game libraries, payment information, and virtual currency balances. Enable 2-Step Verification before adding any payment method or linking any social account. The process takes 90 seconds and dramatically reduces your account’s attack surface.
- Click your profile avatar (top-right in the client) and select Account Management. This opens the Ubisoft account portal in your default browser.
- Go to the Security tab.
- Under 2-Step verification, click Activate.
- Select your method: Authenticator App (Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, or any TOTP-compatible app) or Email. Authenticator App is strongly preferred – email codes are slower and vulnerable to email account compromise or SIM-swap attacks.
- Scan the QR code with your authenticator app, enter the 6-digit confirmation code, and save your backup codes in a password manager. Do not store backup codes in plain text.
Once enabled, every login from an unrecognized device requires both your password and a fresh 6-digit code. You can trust specific devices for 30 days to reduce repeated prompts on your primary PC. For a complete account security checklist, see Ubisoft’s official login troubleshooting guide.
Step 6: Configure Download Settings and Bandwidth
Ubisoft Connect’s default download speed cap is set far below most users’ actual connection speed, producing confusingly slow game downloads on fast internet. Fix this before queuing your first download:
- Click the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines, top-left of the client) and select Settings.
- Open the Downloads tab.
- Under Download Bandwidth, drag the slider to the far right – the maximum configurable value is 200 MB/s, which exceeds most consumer connections. Setting it to maximum ensures the slider is never the bottleneck.
- Consider enabling Allow downloads during gameplay only if your storage is an NVMe SSD. Mechanical HDDs create I/O contention, simultaneously degrading both download speed and in-game performance.
- Set your Game installation folder to your preferred drive. NVMe drives cut installation times for large titles (Assassin’s Creed Shadows: 100 GB+) from 20+ minutes to under 10.
If downloads remain slow after maximizing the slider, a CDN routing issue is likely. Flush your DNS cache and renew your IP address – these two commands resolve the majority of Ubisoft CDN connectivity problems:
:: Run in Command Prompt as Administrator:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Restart Ubisoft Connect after renewing. Stop the active download and restart it – the new bandwidth cap only applies to freshly initiated downloads, not in-progress transfers. For all available download options, see Ubisoft’s download options guide.
Step 7: Set Up the In-Game Overlay
The Ubisoft Connect overlay surfaces in-game without alt-tabbing: achievements, active challenges, friends list, FPS counter, and challenge progress are all accessible via a single keystroke. It is enabled by default but worth verifying and customizing.
- Go to Settings â General.
- Confirm Enable in-game overlay for supported games is checked.
- The default toggle shortcut is Shift + F2. Change this in the Settings pane if it conflicts with a game binding – Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Rainbow Six Siege both use the F-key range for in-game actions.
- Inside any supported game, press Shift + F2 to open the overlay. Navigate to the Stats tile to display your live FPS, session duration, and current challenge progress.
The overlay adds less than 1% CPU overhead on modern systems. On older hardware (GTX 1060-class or below), it can cause intermittent frame drops. Navigate to Settings â General, uncheck the overlay option, and restart the game to recover those frames.
Common conflict: If pressing Shift + F2 opens Windows Game Bar instead of the Ubisoft overlay, go to Windows Settings â Gaming â Xbox Game Bar and change or disable the Game Bar shortcut. Ubisoft Connect and Xbox Game Bar share the same keyboard hook layer in Windows 11, and the OS-level shortcut wins by default.
Step 8: Enable Cloud Saves and Link Console Accounts
Ubisoft Connect cloud saves are free for all account holders and sync progress between PC and supported PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Unlike many competitors, there is no published storage cap – Ubisoft manages save storage server-side per game.
- Go to Settings â General.
- Ensure Enable cloud save synchronization for supported games is checked.
- To verify a specific game is syncing: right-click its tile in your Library and select Properties â Cloud Save. A green checkmark confirms the last upload succeeded; a warning icon indicates a conflict requiring resolution.
- To enable cross-save with a console, go to Account Management â Linked Accounts and connect your PSN or Xbox Gamertag. Once linked, saves from The Division 2, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and other cross-save titles flow between platforms automatically.
Cloud saves sync automatically at game launch and exit. If a conflict appears – most commonly after playing on a second device offline – Ubisoft Connect presents a dialog asking which version to keep: local or cloud. Read this dialog carefully. Choosing the wrong version overwrites your preferred progress, and there is no undo.
To disable cloud saves for a specific game (for mod compatibility or custom save management), right-click the game in your Library â Properties â uncheck Cloud Save. This per-game toggle overrides the global setting and does not affect other titles.
Step 9: Link Steam and Epic Games Store Libraries
Ubisoft Connect is the mandatory authentication layer for all Ubisoft PC games – including copies purchased through Steam or the Epic Games Store. Those launchers call Ubisoft Connect in the background, but you need your credentials available at first launch of any externally purchased title.
The link process is fully automatic: the first time you launch a Ubisoft game from Steam or Epic, Ubisoft Connect opens and prompts for login. Once authenticated, the game appears in both its original storefront library and your Ubisoft Connect library simultaneously. No manual merge is needed, and subsequent launches happen without the login prompt as long as you remain signed in.
If you want a single unified view of your entire PC game collection – Ubisoft Connect, Steam, Epic, GOG, and more – consider using a meta-launcher alongside Ubisoft Connect. Playnite v10.51’s Ubisoft plugin imports your full Ubisoft library in under 60 seconds, giving you one interface for every storefront.
Step 10: Subscribe to Ubisoft+ (Optional)
Ubisoft+ offers two tiers accessible from the Ubisoft+ tab inside the client or at store.ubisoft.com/us/ubisoftplus. Neither is required to play games you own outright – they are rental-access subscriptions that expand your available library.
| Feature | Ubisoft+ Classics ($7.99/mo) | Ubisoft+ Premium ($17.99/mo) |
|---|---|---|
| Library size | 50+ titles (back catalog) | 100+ titles |
| New releases | No | Yes – day-one, Premium edition included |
| DLC | Base game only | Season Passes and all DLC included |
| Store discount | 20% off in-tier games | 20% off games + 10% off virtual currencies |
| PC cloud gaming | Not included | Included via Ubisoft’s streaming servers |
| Platform availability | PC (also part of PS Plus / Xbox tiers) | PC only |
To subscribe, click Ubisoft+ in the sidebar, select your tier, and enter payment details. Access activates immediately. Subscription titles appear with a distinct Ubisoft+ badge in your library so you always know which games you own permanently versus which require an active subscription to play.
If you cancel, cloud saves for subscription titles are preserved. Re-subscribe at any time and continue exactly where you left off. For a full value comparison across all major gaming subscriptions, read our EA Play Pro vs Ubisoft+ vs PC Game Pass 2026 breakdown.
Step 11: Use the Ubisoft Connect Units Rewards System
Ubisoft Connect Units are the platform’s loyalty currency, earned passively through gameplay and purchases. No opt-in is required – Units accumulate in your account automatically from the moment you log in and start playing.
- Earning Units: Complete in-game Challenges visible in the Challenges tab (open the overlay with Shift + F2, then select Challenges). Units are also awarded for Ubisoft Store purchases and account level-ups.
- Viewing your balance: Click your profile avatar in the top-right. Your Unit balance and XP progress bar appear directly in the dropdown.
- Redeeming for in-game items: Open any game’s page in Ubisoft Connect, click Rewards, and select an item. Costs range from 20 Units (minor cosmetics) to 500+ Units (premium in-game items).
- Redeeming for store discounts: Add a game to your Ubisoft Store cart, proceed to checkout, and use the Use Units toggle to apply your balance as a percentage discount toward the purchase price.
Units do not expire as long as your account shows at least one login per 12 months. Players who have been active across multiple Ubisoft titles for several years can accumulate balances significant enough to discount a new full-price game by 10-20% at checkout – the system rewards long-term engagement disproportionately compared to casual players.
Step 12: Test Offline Mode and Finalize Settings
Ubisoft Connect supports offline play for single-player titles – but requires an online connection at least once every 30 days to renew the offline entitlement. This is stricter than Steam’s offline mode, which is more tolerant of extended disconnections.
- Go to Settings â General and enable Start Ubisoft Connect in offline mode only if you regularly play without internet access. Leaving this off is safer for most users since it eliminates the risk of accidentally locking yourself into offline mode when you actually have connectivity.
- To enter offline mode on demand, click the arrow next to your username at the top of the client and select Go Offline.
- Test offline access: disconnect your PC from the internet and launch a single-player title. If it launches without an authentication prompt, offline mode is working correctly. If it demands an online connection, that title has mandatory always-online DRM regardless of offline mode settings.
- Final preference check: go to Settings â General and set Launch Ubisoft Connect on Windows startup to match your workflow. Enabling this reduces game launch time by keeping the client’s background service pre-initialized.
Your Ubisoft Connect installation is now fully configured. The sections below cover the Steam Deck and Linux workflow, a structured troubleshooting table, and advanced power-user features.
Ubisoft Connect on Steam Deck and Linux in 2026
There is no native Linux binary for Ubisoft Connect (verified June 29, 2026). Running Ubisoft games on Steam Deck or any Linux distribution requires a Windows compatibility layer – and a specific one since the April 2026 client update.
Steam Deck: GE-Proton Method
A Ubisoft Connect client update broke authentication under standard Valve Proton – a regression already present by the v169.1.0.12953 build FilePuma catalogued in November 2025, and one that persisted through the v168.1.0.12922 (247.23 MB, September 2025) and v168.0.0.12921 (247.08 MB, September 2025) builds FilePuma also logged. As of June 29, 2026, Valve’s upstream Proton still has not shipped a fix, so this workaround remains necessary on the current v169.6.0.13045 client. The fix is GE-Proton, the community-maintained fork:
- Switch to Desktop Mode on the Steam Deck.
- Open the Discover Software Center and install ProtonUp-Qt.
- Inside ProtonUp-Qt, download the latest GE-Proton release.
- Back in Steam (Game Mode or Desktop Mode), right-click your Ubisoft game â Properties â Compatibility â enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool â select the GE-Proton version you installed.
- Launch the game. The Ubisoft Connect login window appears inside the Proton container – sign in as normal. Authentication completes within 5-10 seconds on a stable WiFi connection.
If authentication still fails after switching to GE-Proton, add PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% to the game’s Steam launch options. This disables esync (a Linux performance feature that conflicts with certain Ubisoft Connect builds) and resolves connectivity for most affected titles.
Heroic Games Launcher on Linux
For a more stable Linux experience than the direct Steam/Proton approach, use Heroic Games Launcher. Heroic maintains its own isolated Wine prefix for Ubisoft Connect, separate from Steam’s Proton environment:
- Install Heroic Games Launcher (Flatpak is the recommended method:
flatpak install com.heroicgameslauncher.hgl). - Open Heroic â Sources â Ubisoft Connect â Install Client. Heroic downloads and configures the Windows Ubisoft Connect binary inside a managed Wine prefix.
- Log into your Ubisoft account inside the Heroic-managed Ubisoft Connect window.
- Your Ubisoft library appears in Heroic’s game list and can be launched directly without switching to any other launcher.
Note: As of October 2026, the Ubisoft Connect in-game overlay (Shift + F2) still does not function under any Linux compatibility layer – including on the current v174.2.0.13389 client. Cloud saves, challenge tracking, and library management all work normally.
Common Pitfalls When Setting Up Ubisoft Connect
These five mistakes generate the majority of post-install frustration reported in Ubisoft support forums and community Discord servers:
Pitfall 1: Installing Without Admin Rights
Double-clicking the installer installs Ubisoft Connect in your user profile folder rather than C:\Program Files (x86). The client appears functional but the auto-updater fails silently, leaving you on an outdated build indefinitely. Fix: uninstall via Control Panel, then reinstall by right-clicking â Run as administrator.
Pitfall 2: Creating a Duplicate Account
Ubisoft auto-creates accounts for Steam users on first launch of a Ubisoft game. Creating a second account manually results in a split library across two accounts that cannot be merged. Always search your inbox for a Ubisoft welcome email before clicking “Create account.”
Pitfall 3: Firewall Blocking Ubisoft Connect Outbound Traffic
Third-party security suites (Malwarebytes, ESET, Bitdefender) regularly block Ubisoft Connect’s outbound connections without displaying an obvious error. The symptom is a login that spins indefinitely or downloads that stall at 0 B/s. Add explicit allow rules for the launcher and service binaries:
:: Run in Command Prompt as Administrator:
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Ubisoft Connect" dir=out action=allow ^
program="C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\UbisoftGameLauncher.exe" enable=yes
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Ubisoft Connect Service" dir=out action=allow ^
program="C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\UplayService.exe" enable=yes
Pitfall 4: Mishandling Cloud Save Conflict Dialogs
When Ubisoft Connect detects a conflict between your local save and the cloud version, it presents a dialog asking which to keep. Clicking through without reading can overwrite hours of progress. The dialog appears most often after playing on a second device offline then reconnecting. Rule: choose the cloud save if its timestamp is more recent than your last offline session; choose local if you just played offline and the cloud save is older.
Pitfall 5: Leaving Bandwidth at the Default Low Setting
The default bandwidth slider caps downloads well below your actual connection speed. A 500 Mbps fiber user on defaults sees 20-40 MB/s instead of the 50+ MB/s their line supports. Always drag the slider to 200 MB/s maximum in Settings â Downloads and restart the active download after adjusting – the new limit applies only to freshly initiated transfers.
Troubleshooting: 8 Common Ubisoft Connect Errors
The table below covers the errors most commonly reported after a fresh Ubisoft Connect install or system migration, with the verified fix for each as of October 2026, matching the current v174.2.0.13389 client:
| Error / Symptom | Root Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Hangs on “Starting Ubisoft Connect” splash | Self-update race condition or corrupted cache | Kill UbisoftGameLauncher.exe in Task Manager; delete %LocalAppData%\Ubisoft Game Launcher\cache\; relaunch |
| “Authentication error” on login | Expired 2FA code, wrong region, or firewall blocking outbound traffic | Sync system clock (w32tm /resync in admin CMD), add firewall exceptions, verify server status at ubisoft.com/en-us/help |
| “This game requires Ubisoft Connect” on launch | Ubisoft Connect not running in background when game is launched from Steam or Epic | Launch Ubisoft Connect manually first, then start the game from its original storefront |
| Shift + F2 opens Xbox Game Bar instead of overlay | Windows Game Bar shortcut takes priority over Ubisoft Connect hook | Go to Windows Settings â Gaming â Xbox Game Bar â change or disable the Game Bar shortcut |
| Cloud save sync spinner never resolves | Ubisoft servers unreachable or game process still holding a file lock | Fully exit the game before expecting sync; check Ubisoft server status; manually back up saves from Documents\[Game]\ as a precaution |
| Download speed stuck at 1-5 MB/s | Bandwidth slider at default low position or CDN routing failure | Set slider to 200 MB/s (Settings â Downloads), flush DNS (ipconfig /flushdns), restart client and restart the download |
| Ubisoft Connect crashes immediately at launch | Incompatible antivirus, missing Visual C++ redistributables, or corrupted install files | Whitelist client in AV; install Microsoft Visual C++ 2019 x64 Redistributable; run the installer repair option |
| Steam Deck: “Unable to connect” in GE-Proton | April 2026 Ubisoft Connect update broke standard Proton and some GE-Proton configurations | Upgrade to the latest GE-Proton via ProtonUp-Qt; add PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% to Steam launch options for affected games |
For connectivity issues not covered here, Ubisoft’s official connectivity troubleshooting guide is maintained with platform-specific fixes for Windows 11 24H2 configurations that differ from earlier builds. See also the official Ubisoft Connect installation guide, which Ubisoft Help updated on October 9, 2026 to confirm the client’s current distribution process, for reinstall instructions.
Advanced Tips: Power User Features in Ubisoft Connect
Once the basics are configured, these settings and workflows make day-to-day use significantly faster and more reliable for frequent Ubisoft players.
Game File Verification
Ubisoft Connect’s built-in file integrity checker compares every installed game file against Ubisoft’s server manifest and re-downloads only files that have changed or are missing. This is faster and more targeted than a full reinstall. To run it: right-click any game in your Library â Verify files. A full scan on a 50 GB title takes 2-4 minutes on NVMe and resolves most launch failures and mid-session crashes without touching saved data or configuration files.
Per-Game Installation Drives
Ubisoft Connect lets you set a different install location per game rather than forcing all titles to a single global folder. When installing a game, click the folder dropdown and select any connected drive. Practical strategy: install multiplayer games (Rainbow Six Siege, The Division 2) on NVMe for fast load times that shorten lobby waits, and single-player narrative games on secondary HDDs where load times are less critical.
Diagnosing Running Processes
When Ubisoft Connect behaves unexpectedly, checking which processes are active helps isolate the issue quickly. Run this in PowerShell:
# List all active Ubisoft Connect processes:
Get-Process | Where-Object { $_.Name -like "*Ubisoft*" -or $_.Name -like "*Uplay*" }
# Expected processes during an active gaming session:
# UbisoftGameLauncher.exe - main client UI
# UplayService.exe - background authentication service
# UplayCrashReporter.exe - crash handler (only present after a crash)
If UplayService.exe is absent but the client shows as open, the background service has crashed – a known trigger for authentication failures. Kill all remaining Ubisoft processes and relaunch the client from scratch to force the service to restart cleanly.
Clean Reinstall Procedure
Standard uninstall via Control Panel leaves residual files that can corrupt a fresh install. For a true clean reinstall, remove these directories and registry keys after uninstalling:
:: Run in Command Prompt as Administrator after standard uninstall:
rd /s /q "C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher"
rd /s /q "%LocalAppData%\Ubisoft Game Launcher"
rd /s /q "%ProgramData%\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher"
:: Then in Registry Editor (regedit) as Administrator, delete:
:: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Ubisoft\Launcher
:: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Ubisoft\Launcher
Do not delete your game save folders (%USERPROFILE%\Documents\[Game Name]\) – those are preserved independently of the launcher and are not affected by this procedure. Game entitlements remain on your Ubisoft account server-side; reinstalling the client and logging in restores full access to your library immediately.
Ubisoft Connect vs. Other PC Game Launchers
Ubisoft Connect occupies a unique position: it is both a standalone storefront and a mandatory DRM layer injected into every Ubisoft title regardless of purchase origin. That differs from EA App (EA-published games only), Battle.net (Blizzard/Activision titles only), and the Epic Games Launcher, which handles Epic-published games but does not intercept purchases made through other platforms.
| Feature | Ubisoft Connect | EA App | Battle.net | Epic Launcher |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Version (October 2026) | 174.2.0.13389 | Current EA build | Current Blizzard build | Current Epic build |
| Installer size | 247 MB | ~200 MB | ~70 MB | ~80 MB |
| Subscription option | Ubisoft+ ($7.99-$17.99/mo) | EA Play ($4.99-$14.99/mo) | None | None |
| Cloud saves | Free | Free | Free | Free |
| Loyalty currency | Units (redeemable for discounts) | None | None | None |
| Linux/Steam Deck | Via GE-Proton (April 2026 patch required) | Via Proton | Planned native client | Native Linux client |
| Mandatory for publisher titles | Yes – all Ubisoft PC games | Yes – all EA PC titles | Yes – all Blizzard titles | Only Epic-published games |
The Units loyalty system is the sharpest differentiator – no other major PC launcher converts in-game activity into real currency discounts at checkout. For a full competitive analysis, see EA App vs Ubisoft Connect vs Battle.net 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ubisoft Connect free to use?
Yes. Ubisoft Connect is free to download and use for games you already own. The Ubisoft+ subscription ($7.99-$17.99/month) is optional and only needed to access the subscription game library. All social features, cloud saves, the in-game overlay, and the Units rewards system are free with any Ubisoft account.
Do I need Ubisoft Connect if I bought a Ubisoft game on Steam?
Yes – unconditionally. Every Ubisoft PC game uses Ubisoft Connect for DRM and online services regardless of where it was purchased. Steam launches the game, which immediately calls Ubisoft Connect for license verification. If Ubisoft Connect is not installed or you are not logged in, the game will not start.
What is the difference between Uplay and Ubisoft Connect?
They are the same application. Ubisoft rebranded Uplay as Ubisoft Connect in September 2020. Many registry keys, executable paths, and support articles still reference “Uplay” internally because Ubisoft preserved the underlying binary name for backwards compatibility, but the client shown to users is Ubisoft Connect.
Can I play Ubisoft games offline?
Single-player games with offline support can be played without an internet connection through Ubisoft Connect’s offline mode. You must have connected online within the past 30 days to maintain offline access. Multiplayer and always-online titles such as The Division 2 cannot be played offline under any circumstances.
How do I transfer my Ubisoft library to a new PC?
Install Ubisoft Connect on the new PC, sign in with your existing account, and your full library reappears automatically – including cloud saves and your Units balance. You do not need to transfer license files or game data manually. Reinstall individual games from the Library tab; entitlements live on Ubisoft’s servers and are tied to your account, not any specific device.
Do Ubisoft Connect Units expire?
Units do not expire as long as your account logs in at least once every 12 months. Accounts inactive for over 12 consecutive months may have their Units reclaimed under Ubisoft’s dormant account policy. Set a calendar reminder to log in annually if you take extended breaks from Ubisoft games.
Why is Ubisoft Connect not working on Steam Deck after the April 2026 update?
The April 2026 Ubisoft Connect client update introduced a change that breaks authentication under standard Valve Proton on Steam Deck and Linux. The fix is to install GE-Proton via ProtonUp-Qt and set it as the forced compatibility tool for each affected Ubisoft game in Steam’s Properties â Compatibility settings. Adding PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% to launch options resolves remaining authentication failures on most affected titles.
Which Ubisoft+ tier is better value for PC players?
Ubisoft+ Premium at $17.99/month is better value for players who want day-one access to new Ubisoft titles in their Premium editions with all DLC included – particularly if you would otherwise buy one or two full-price new releases per year. Ubisoft+ Classics at $7.99/month makes sense for back-catalog exploration or if you already own all recent releases. Neither tier affects ownership of games purchased outright – they are purely rental access layers on top of your owned library.
